- We had Don Garlits give us a private tour of his museum and shops on August 18, 2023. This unique opportunity lasted about two hours, and we broke it down by topics. This is our second video off our tour series.

This is what it is.. Back In 1991-2 I was Living And Working As A Res.- Com. Electrician In Tampa Florida. We Worked From 2 Man Work/Service Trucks. My Fellow Electrician And I Were Given The Job Of Going To The BigDaddy Musiem To Add In A HandiCap Restroom. We Both Spoke With Mr. BigDaddy. As I Recall The One Thing I Am 100% Positive Is As He Stood Talking To Us On Crutches From Racing Injuries Is How Pissed The Government Was Making Him Add A Handicap Restroom To His Commercial Business. 😮😅😊 God Bless you Big Daddy I Haven't Recalled This Fond Memory. It's good to see'ya here in 2024 @ 92 yrs young. God Bless
It;'s great to see Garlits so enthusiastic and alive in his 90's. He has some great stories, but here's one I bet he won't tell.
Back in the 1970's, nearly 50 years ago, I and two of my sons were at the Fremont drag strip in California where Garlits was one of the competitors. My kids were pre teens at the time, and probably more than a nuisance to most pro drag racers. We were wandering through the pits and I lost track of my kids, but when we found each other I found out that they had been in Garlits pit and had been pestering him with questions, as young kids will do. I found out that instead of treating them like the nuisance they surely were, he spent time answering their questions and treating them like they were actually somebody. Then, when it was time to get ready for the next round, he offered them some parts from his Swamp Rat fuel dragster, without them even asking. He sent them home with two Keith Black connecting rods from his racer, with the explanation that it would keep him from being tempted to reuse them. I don't know if the kids remember it, but I do, and one of those rods still hangs in my garage, and the other one is hanging in the garage of one of my good friends. Don Garlits is a class act, a terrific ambassador for the sport of drag racing, a fierce competitor, a genius innovator and a humble person at the same time. I will never forget the kindness and generosity he showed to those kids, and I'd be willing to bet that that was not the only time he did something so thoughtful for some of his fans. Thumbs up to Don Garlits - a man not overly impressed with himself, even though he has every right to be.

i ran into this man at local burger king across the highway about 4 months ago,i was standing right behind him as he was ordering,i knew it was him,i let him eat his meal then i went over to say hello,didnt want to make a scene and said hello,we talked for a few minutes,one of the nicest people i ever met
Glad to hear it. We appreciate your politeness, and hopefully all the fans meeting him will do the same. after years in the artillery and drag racing his hearing is gone and you need to speak loud in front of him so he can see your mouth. thanks for watching!

That's Great. I meet The Man Back in 91-92 Electrical Work At The Musiem. He's A True 1 Of A Kinda Guy.

Don has to be the sharpest 91 yo man I've seen. He appears to be in pretty fair shape physically too, and thats saying something considering all the different accidents he's been in !
Indeed. Only his hearing is gone. But considering that he was in artillery and then drag racing for a lifetime he is doing ok. Now he uses ear protection. You can still talk to him when he is looking at you. He walks and climb stairs well.

I live fairly close to this and have been there about 10 times. I travel 75 a lot and it's a good place to take visitors, especially car club people
When I was a teenager, we always had to go to Rockingham Dragway each year to watch Don Garlits and the other racers compete. Those were the days.
And we may watch him again, as he is completing his electric dragster version II. NHRA took his license but IHRA said come along.
@Viva-la-Maquina thank you for the information. I hate to say it, but the NHRA has really lost my interest. Years ago, I attended the inaugural NHRA race at the twin track near Charlotte, NC. I have to say it was miserable. I haven't been back since, and I've no interest in ever going back. Hopefully, I can go visit the Don Garlits Museum. That would be fun.

A movie was going to be made, more than once, but not sure what happened? Fascinating story of an icon. Prudhomme had one, and I believe Tommy Ivo also, but they miss the king of Drag racing. Knowing what I know about Big Daddy, we would like to tell it how it is, and would not allow it to become a circus like Fast and the Furious.
I have written a book about Garlits and his relationship to Pat, called Don Garlits The Enigmatic Hero. The book recognises Pat’s role in his success and how he has influenced millions of motor heads with his unique combination of gritty drag racer, clever engineer and Christian faith. He initially supported the book but then changed his mind.

I was concern that the audio may not come alright, until his voice of thunder filled our ears and went over the machinery and the poor shops acoustics.
Don can sure describe his part in racing well. Would be great to hear him telling about some race car hauler stories like when he got his first Diesel semi race car hauler with Roadranger transmission.
According to his own words, he was a little late to the big rig scene. Garlits is very frugal and spent entire events without tearing open the engine. It was a racer named ~"Ruffaldi" (or similar) with a huge black trailer and a diesel truck that convince him he needed one. This guy in the 1970's had gold plated rims (real gold). Don told him that nobody will be able to afford the gas to tow such a big rig, and he worked on his car at home, not at the track. He was wrong, and eventually got his own rig. Many years after, ~"Ruffaldi" gave the dragster, truck and trailer to Don Garlits. This 50-year-old rig looks fantastic and it will be on exhibit soon, when they open the Don's Garage next to the museum to the public. I failed to take a good picture of it.

I go to the museum every time we go to Disney World. There is a new building each time.
They plan to open the building next to the main museum labeled as Don's garage for the public in the near future.
