- Bringing back this series and today I'm taking a look at one of my favorite albums, The Gathering by Testament. I'm using a Dean Select V going straight into my Mesa Boogie Tremoverb and Mesa 4x12 cabinet. Shure Sm58 Beta microphone. Basically replicating the gear that was used on the actual album produced and mixed by Andy Sneap.

BACK WITH THE TONE OF THE ARTIST! Today I'm doing one of my faves, TESTAMENT!
Would you do Jinjer? Like you always suggest, the bass is a huge part of their overall tone
Next please SEPULTURA - Bestial Devastation
OLA.... you gotta see the live video for LOVEBITES "Set The World On Fire". It's here on UA-cam. Please check it out!
You will be shocked. Trust me.
There is a Dimebag stealth guitar for sale in NY message me and I will send you a link to check it out.
my fav from Testament!! awesome! where did you got the backing tracks?
you killed the opening riff! Sick V
Haha wanted to say the very same! Cheers Ray, love your channel
This is one of the best riffs il have ever heard, surely one who gave me some taste for extreme music at the time
Nice slap in the face with the dean
What is that riff? Please, someone tell me!
@@AlexandreAlbuquerque-kf5xd Down For Life
Eric Peterson one of the best Rhyhtm Guitarists on the planet along with Mustaine and Dime. Hands down.
I started playing guitar late 93. Eric is a huge influence. So fkn underrated.
And Gary Holt
bro just forgot about james hetfield
@@xaviantorres Because Hetfield is on another planet when it comes to rhythm influences.
@@infernaltim barely on the same level as Eric
The guitar tone sounding as brutal and tight as it did without a boost is really a *testament* to the outstanding guitar playing... I'll show myself out.
*Slow claps*
Well said👏
This line up was outstanding:
Eric, Lombardo, DiGiorgio, James Murphy 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
Hell Fuckin' Yeah! Great lineup, however I do prefer the current Skolnick, Peterson, so good together, DiGiorgio and Hoglan, one of the BEST rhythm sections ever, and YYYYEEAAAAHHHHH
The Gathering is one of the few albums I can listen to from start to finish. There isn't an ounce of flab on it, every track is absolutely crushing. I can put it on, and it still sounds as fresh and heavy as it did when I first heard it twenty years ago.
Thank you!! I still listen to The Gathering from start to finish to this day!
What other albums are there, you can Listen to from Start to finish?
@@Gonzo1809 Personally for me, it's Heartwork by Carcass, the holy trinity of Mastodon albums, Dimension Hatross by Voivod and No More Colour by Coroner
Finally someone talks about The Gathering..one of my absolute favorite albums..
The Gathering is one of the most under appreciated albums of all time.
Never underestimate Eric Peterson's impact on Testament's sound - he's the absolute HAMMER!
YES YES YES YES YES
This album is highly underrated, Ola you're doing an insane job. Thank you!🤘
I was fuckin' lucky to have seen them on The Gathering tour. It was at The Whisky in LA. I was 17. The Haunted was the opening act (their first album is their best). Kerry King was there. I asked if he was there for Dave but the douchebag said he was only their for The Haunted. Dave joining Testament was a dream come true. He took them to a whole new level. So much power, energy and just great drum writing for the music. And of course, DiGorgio on bass and Murphy on lead guitar. Just an all-star lineup. Too bad it was such short-lived.
@@Scalder1798 Yup. I only like The Haunted's first album. Pure Swedish thrash and no bullshit. I saw them again in 2000 at November To Dismember fest. Good times.
Yeah, when I first heard the dark string orchestra intro then it exploding into DNR, I was blown away. Not many albums have done that to me. Lombardo also recorded his 3rd album with Grip Inc that year. Love that band.
You were at Live In London? That's awesome. That's such an incredible live album. The drums sound amazing. Tama Bell Brass snare. John was excellent. Loved his version of Sins of Omission. And they finally played The Legacy! Such an underrated song.
I hear ya. Hoglan is one of my favorites but I'd like to see him playing with a new band where he can further explore his creativity. Would be cool to have John back.
The Gathering, my favorite Testament album. Dave Lombardo's drumming on that album was amazing.
This is by far the best Testament album. Dave Lombardo killed it on the drums on this album.
Hells yeah Testament! I'd suggest Opeth's Deliverance tone! But it's so tough...I spent years trying to replicate it, I'm still missing something...
I often felt like Laney VH100R was 90% there. You get the right character of distortion and eq right away, even with a wrong cabinet (had JCM900 with g12t-75 instead of the laney cabinet). I suppose a PRS into that does the rest. Although they did list triple recto as well on their website. Quite uncommon to have a band list all the gear used to record their albums on their website. Found it through google and tried to reverse engineer how to find the links to the albums' gear with no success, only googling it gets me there.
I've found that using way less gain than you think you need helps a lot to nail the Deliverance tone. I've gotten pretty close running the ultra gain channel on my Marshall DSL at a quarter or a little above, with a clean boost. Too much gain and all the complex chords get way too muddy.
@@Yupppi Mh, well...because I heard of the vh100r, I got one back in 2008. It wasn't close at all to me. It was more similar to Paul Gilbert's sound. Nowadays I use a rectifier mixed with a 5150 with a prs and it gets close. Still, it's missing something.
So the vh100r I believe it was just a marketing thing...and live, they simply used it for its clean channel.
Nice to see you here man. I see you're on band's tone hunt as well lmao
Indeed it's a masterpiece, when kids of 2000s listen to The Gathering they are left in awe ! Killer album, perfect 10 !
That DNR part sounded so awesome that I couldnt help but yell "Lies! Broken dreams!"
The Gathering's guitar tone is absolutely killer
EDIT: do Chaosphere's tone!!
YES.
I FUCKING AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT!!!
THIS!
Loved the “Down for Life” intro, The Gathering is underrated asf
Absolutely crushing. Eric Peterson is a Guitar monster. I had this cranked on my stereo and have to say that mix was absolutely balls to the wall. Wicked playing as always Ola.🎸💥
One of the best thrash albums ever. Wish they would have had that sound on Souls of black album.
What a cool and helpful guy Andy Sneap is, props to him. A real fan of music obviously(yeah I know it is his job, but still).
i would assume it helps he was a recording artist himself waayyy back in the day.
TESTAMENT!! Seen them like 100 times live! One of my all-time favorite bands! PREACH!!
This rig set up keeps you honest. No covering up any flaws in your playing
“The Gathering” is the album that showed me there was more to life than just Metallica and Nirvana. Thank you Ola for showing this album some well deserved love 🤘
This album blew me away back in the day. That drumming uurrrrr yerrrrrr

James Murphy is a guitar god. The gathering is amazing.
James does not get enough love. So underrated.
James Murphy just Rules! Loved Dog Faced Gods!
He's one of the most important figures in metal and why I play guitar. Punishing, groovy with an unmistakable style all his own. Not to mention his songwriting and production skills. Dude is one of the all time greats.
@@keeponlivin81 I absolutely agree!!
@@charlesbrown9848 I'd give anything for another Disincarnate record!
Fantastic intro riff, dear lord! I think Andy Sneap also mixed Dream Theaters upcoming album. Andy is truly gifted because The Alien sounds absolutely amazing as well.
Testament is so underrated man.Big four should have been big five
07:32 am in Argentina, I saw the tittle and I'm hiding in the bathroom at work just to watch this one ... I want that tone man!
Unboosted metal tones can be so pleasing with great playing. Love that tone, tubescreamers grate on my ears nowadays.
I think Eric is kind of a "straight in" guy, all his tones sound like they are tight because of tight playing and just a well set up guitar.
Carcass Heartwork's guitar tone. One of the greatest ever.
More Testament videos please they are for me one of the best metal bands of the History … Greetings from Romania 😎😎
i thought i was the only one that thought that - the gathering - had the most brutal sounds of any metal record, and the glorious drumwork of Dave Lombardo, BLISS.
🔥
what does this have to do with your hair colour?
@@daleross8369 🔥?

Thanks for this Ola, one of my favorite album productions as well
Thx Ola, my fav Testament album of all. Can you do Nile sometime? Greets
My favorite album from them!! Thanks for doing this!
Ohhhhhh yesssss The Gathering! Not ONE bad song on this album...probably my favorite of all time. Lombardo takes a big credit for this imo...the drums are pounding so hard ;)
Fuck yes, I'm so glad you did this album. Easily the best Testament release IMO, full of absolutely disgusting riffs. Not boosting the amp was surprising, but now that I went back to listen to the tone I can definitely hear that slightly squishy recto attack
Absolutely - the sound and the songs on this album are a complete blast!!! Legendary 😎
I love this album! Thank you, Ola, for the video🙏
Absolutely nailed it as always mate!
I use to say that this album is something like the "Thrash dream line up"! One of the bests albuns ever!
That non boosted recto is something to give a try someday.
Congratulations for the good shit man, been here since the Savage and Blackmore Engl videos! More then a decade!
lol, thats what I used to use back in the day. Mainly, out of ignorance as a teenager, but if you tinker with it a while you can get a brutal asf tone out of an unboosted triple rec. You do have to play pretty precise though the louder it gets.
@@ronburgundy2660 yeah man, I used to play it like that when "unknowing" about boost. But sometime ago I did a rehearsal without boost and it did the job, but I missed the boost in solos and pinch harmonics.
But it does the job for sure and with lots of balls!
Kick ass tone indeed. Love this series. Great that you revived it 🖤💪
This is what I've been looking forward to for many years!
YES! Greatly appreciate the breakdown of my favorite thrash band.
I would have bought a rectifier 20 years ago if I had known about the overdrive. But no one at guitar center could explain to me how to make it sound better. Trust me, I tested 4 different guitars with different pickups and it was frustrating.
Yep. I have a Triple Rec, it's flubby.
Try a DUAL REC? But it's also probably personal taste.
On rectifiers, as you turn up the MV, things get really muddy, really quick. I like to keep it down enough to retain some clarity.
Also the EQ is somewhat unusual if you're used to more traditional amps. The mid knob acts on a very wide range, so as I cut some lows to tame the flubbyness, I counterbalance with the mid knob, which helps retain some low end punch. Obviously an OD in front of the amp makes all of this a lot easier
Yessssss! Love this album and this tone!!
Thanks Ola! I was just looking for info on Testament tone not too long ago! D.N.R. is one of my favorite metal album opening tracks ever.
The tone dude!! 🔥 nailed it!! Sick ass guitar!
I have a picture with Chuck Billy and my Death Metal band at the time from NAMM around 2009...a prized possession and that dude was so cool and down to earth.
That was real fun man, cheers. Gathering is one of my all-time favourites as well. And, of course, Andy Sneap. Cannot get enough of the man. Really wish he would revive Sabbat or record something new with Hell.
AWESOME tone-topic!one of the SICKEST bands in history!
So cool, thanks Ola
Don't forget about migthy James Murphy being a part of this piece of destruction!
Right! I think he was a great pick for Testament and although I really like Alex's early solos & style I honestly prefer James's style overall, deffinitely more than modern "post-jazz" Skolnick ^^
I remember him absolutely nailing the solo on that Scorpions Sail of Charon cover ( & dat sound
Thanks for covering this Ola. Eric's tone has just been monster all these years. Huge inspiration for me
That tremoverb is my absolute favourite amp you own. I go back to the video you made when you first got it once every...couple of weeks maybe? Just everything I could ever want from a high-gain tone. Thank you for sharing it with us!
This album and carcass - heartwork are the sickest, brutalist, heaviest, ball crushing studio guitar tones i ever heard.
Probably my all time favorite as well. Nicely done, sir.
Kickass video, man! Love this album
Crushing tone. My favorite Testament album. Dave is a beast on the drums!
We all know how great a guitarist Alex Skolnick is, but Eric Peterson is one of the most underrated thrash guitarist. Great tone and killer riffs.
Alex Skolnick wasn't back with the band yet when they recorded The Gathering - James Murphy played lead guitar on the album.
@@dmitryowens yes Im aware of that.
Even without a boost that sounded like pure brutal bliss. Thanks Ola i love Testament.
Superb band and album. You did a great job Ola, had e grinning from ear to ear.😎🤘🏻😁
One of my favorite albums ever. The sound still amazes me.
This album, for me, is the epitome of metal sound!
Thanks Ola! I’ll try to extract that sound from my gear!!
So glad to see this video. That Down for Life tone and chugging is one of my all time favorite thrash riffs. It's alos good to see so many other people appreciate the Gathering here in the comments
This is KILLER! 1 of my favorite bands of all time and seen the last on SLAYER'S Final Tour, Testament is just that good! Good stuff Ola!
YAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGHHHH!!!! Love the tones you're getting and your playing here! I'll be going to see Testament soon, so I'll check out what Eric and Alex are using. Being a bassist, I'll have my eyes glued on the amazing Steve DiGiorgio too!
Thank you for THIS !!! \m/
The Gathering is my favorite Testament album, especially the song Eyes of Wrath. There is just something about the mood of that song. I know Skolnick wasn't on this album, but that dude is way more talented than he gets credit for. In some of the live performances of songs from the gathering he adlibs some amazing solos.
Ola you are the man!you can’t go wrong with Testament I love their sound
Nice video! Good album too. I think you nailed it ! I think Andy is a great addition to priest as well!
You make me so happy cause Testament is one of my favorites bands, specially The Gathering !
love seeing you play a V guitar, you look and sound GREAT with a Dean! \m/ and I LOVE using the C tuning, seeing you use it is awesome!
- Its a dark and dynamic crunch... I can appreciate it, 100%.
Love this album. Heavy af! Pure beef! Thanks for this Ola
Got to see this tour with the album lineup in Cleveland. James was hanging out looking thru the DJ booth cds. The haunted played too. Awesome times \m/
Awesome tone on the album I love it. Sounds so dark and not muddy at all 🤘
That was absolutely awesome
I always loved the way The Gathering sounded, and DNR is my favorite Testament riff of all time! I wanna play this on my Mark IV now that I have one. Nice job, man!
I stood front row with my dad at the Megadeth/Testament/Exxodus show (Megadeth Rust in peace reunion tour) it was AWESOME!!!
Great that you also demo it in a mix!
Awesome job Ola 👍👍 Testament is such a powerful band, one of the all time best.
Eric Peterson is such a King of Creating killer tones and riffs! Nice to see some appreciation for this album!
Glad you did this. Always thought The Gathering album had some of the sickest tone for metal guitar back in the day. Still holds up today EASILY.
Duuuuuuuude, @Ola. Thanks for that!!!!
Sounds sick as always :)
Love this album!
DAAAAAAAAAAMN this is really close. Loved this album since high school. Still my favorite Testament record.
Absolutely badass!
Oh man, that was so awesome.Great to wake up to.lol thanks Ola!!!🤘👍
I remember being hyped to the extreme back in the days when it came out - one of my favourite bands with icons like Dave Lombardo, James Murphy and Steve DiGiorgio! Damn! A metal dream team! I was a bit disappointed though, as I was hoping for far more solos by Murphy (having in mind what he'd done in Cause of Death by Obituary, Spiritual Healing by Death and of course Low by Testament) but after some time I thought that the songs on The Gathering didn't really need that kind of stuff. Ola's tone is great BTW Cheers:)
James was already dealing with his cancer to the point he barely remembers anything from that year. Still, you can tell his addition made the album far heavier.
I couldn't stand what James Murphy did in Obituary. Cause of Death to me is their crappiest album they ever put out.
@@jeremyboehm5512 Poor baby. James' solos made it to stand out, instead being a one dimensional average osdm album.
@@jeremyboehm5512 good trollo bro!
@@michaszuty5035 Why can't people dislike something without being called a baby or a troll? So stupid. Get a life.
Great video!! Love that album 🤘👌
Brutally, Brutality love this tone!!!!
Lovin' this album and this tone, it is so plainly brutal
Waited all the wait till the end of the video only to hear you to play DNR. I began to sing along your playing. Man this album is a truly masterpiece. Well done, Ola
My favourite Testament album! I could never get my Triple Rec to sound as good as what you’ve just done Ola. It absolutely needed a boost or it was just too clubby. Good stuff!
So glad you agree that this album is phreaking excellent, it's my favourite thrash album of all time.
On my Rectifier Recording Preamp, if you put gain full, mids just 2-3, bass 4-5, treble 6, presence 6 it SOUNDS MASSIVE...ANd tight as well. I occasionally boost it, but with JBs in front, it sounds great by itself. I have a feeling the super scooped mids and extra presence somehow tight up the amp.
