- Home video from making of Second Reality / Future Crew in 1993. Most of the demo group went to home place of Mika Tuomi (Trug / Future Crew) to finalize the demo. Video was filmed by Tomi Suominen.

I gave this a thumbs-up despite the fact that everyone in this video had probably used the Internet by the time this video was made. I think I was only into the Demoscene for a few months at most before I first used IRC or a browser in 1992. Though I still appreciate the sentiment--the Internet was a lot less prone to taking all of your free time in a day 25+ years ago, haha.
@@Dr.Quarex There was no internet in 92. I was still running a BBS, and the online access was dominated by charge-by-the-hour web portal services like AOL and Prodigy. There were no search engines or web crawlers and you were limited mostly to the domains of the respective web portal you used or the content of the BBS you connected to. The first available browser, Mosaic, was released in 93
@spladam3845 Yes, I was connecting to the Internet through the portal of a local BBS, Infinite Space Online. At this point, it was primarily gopher, usenet, and mostly a novelty. Staying local to the BBS was far more interesting to me.
It was tough as hell, reading assembly books and learning about hardware from the very manufacturer docs 😂
And no mobile phones...
I was like 13 when Second Reality came out and it totally changed my life. That demo was playing non stop on my 386dx and it drove my parents crazy haha.

Absolutely incredible. Happy to hear some of these guys became the founders of Futuremark / 3DMark. Thanks for the inspiration in 1993 and throughout the decades.

These guys were my heros when I was 15... they inspired me to go on to become a software developer. 2nd Reality was the most awesome thing I'd ever seen when it came out. I always wondered how they worked on it together... really interesting insight.
if you are still around, just know that going down a long rabbit hole starting at a remix of unreal 2 made by one of my favorite composers led me here. you guys were incredible and not only kickstarted the dos/windows branch of the demoscene, but also made what would become one of the more influential demos in history as far as I know.
Second Reality made me join the demoscene back in '93 as coder.
When I ran this on my PC back in 93 it was the first time I stopped regretting selling my Amiga. Top work, and groundbreaking at the time.... and I could listen to that music all day!

You guys were legends for your time, and as far as I'm concerned, continues on. Awesome footage to see, and gives an insight to all the awesome shit we did as "kids" before the internet. Most people today have no idea how insane demos were for their time.

@@prltqdf9 I think this is why the scene seems to be gaining momentum again. Guys made their kids, got some work done and now have some free time on their hands again.
I don't think we have the processing power to handle a modern Future Crew demo. I'm sure my PC would spontaneously combust under the strain.

Second Reality made me get serious. My dad showed it to me in late 1993. It made me realize that there was quite a bit that I didn't know, and it set me on the journey to find out how to make demos and games on the level of you guys.
You can sense the excitement in the room. I wonder if they realized they were inspiring an entire generation.
Second Reality was one of the first demos I ever saw, behind one from Renaissance. It blew my mind just how technical and amazing it looked. I know it looks antiquated now but in 1993 it was cutting edge and made by some extremely talented people. I’ve never seen this video, it’s really cool getting to see what they all looked like and the space they used to create a Demo that to this day, is still one of the best I ever saw. Now when I go back to it, I just get a massive blast of nostalgia back to that year when I was running an ANSI/Warez BBS. Ah the days when only one person could connect at a time because I could only afford one phone line.
Cheers FC, you guys are all amazing at what you did back then, music absolutely included.
I don't think it looks antiquated, it was peak performance of it's day and still holds up today but you have to consider what kind of equipment they had back then. This all ran on CPU and it's amazing what they could squeeze out of absolute shit processors comparing to today by optimizing code to the absolute extreme.
@@gerryn2 It’s antiquated for what’s possible today, that’s what I was getting at. Technology has moved so far ahead of what we had in 1993, where there weren’t even GPUs, and only VGA cards. I wasn’t trying to diminish what they accomplished, because what they put out for the technology of the time was absolutely mind blowing. It’s like Polaroid cameras. They still work, still take cool pictures but compared to even your average cell phone, the picture quality is bad. I love Polaroids, that doesn’t mean they aren’t antiquated :) Basically it wasn’t meant as an insult but a compliment for what they achieved with the technology available then. I damn near worshipped FC and Renaissance back then. They were the reason I started an ART BBS that morphed into a fairly popular warez/ansi art board for my area. If I had never seen those demos, I never would have gone in that direction and met some really cool people.
Hell, I spent a ton of time on #ansi on IRC thanks to them heh
I was 15 back then and was writing music on trackers back then, these guys bought this stuff out and we all tried to be them, they really pushed the PC scene and gaming (at the time) in new exciting directions when at a time a lot of stuff wasn't code based graphics it was purely in the sprite world. They inspired me to keep on with music and do a few great things in music and graphics in my life and still at it today. Special times back then, stuff you don't really think of at the time.
Filmed on my 15th birthday according to the date stamp. I was still coding on the Amiga back then and didn’t get a 486sx25 with a GUS of my own until i was 16 but this demo is what made me buy one and start doing 386 assembly. 😊
OMG!!!! I remember those years, going to PC parties, coding marathons and enjoying time with friends. Men you made history and inspired a whole generation porting the Amiga demoscene to the PC world. Thanks for sharing this moment.

My god this is awesome. As a young programmer in 1992 using my smoking fast 386/40 and programming in BP7 with inline assembler (long live unchained vga), Future Crew showed me what was really possible and they showed me to create true art amongst the logic and math. **wipes tear from his eye**

Borland Turbo Pascal with occasional inline asm was such a beautiful way of coding for me in the 90s. Pascal felt so nice, like art meets computer programming. Good times 💫

@@coolie4u Borland TP was brilliant. At college when i was 16 (1993) I used Pascal with inline asm to create a Windows 3.1 look alike GUI with serial mouse support for a class project. Had to go buy a serial mouse as i only had an Amiga at home until later that year. It was so fun! I still have the floppy with the source and compiled binary. I need to buy a Kryoflux or something one day then i can resurrect it and reminisce about how cool I was hahaha 🤣

The future in the making back way then. When I got this, it was jaw dropping for sure. It gave me the push to head into IT. And in 93' it wasn't easy to get into IT without any university degree, but I managed. Best choice I ever made. Thank you all guys for this. Reading all the commends, this demo has changed lives for many, including my own. 👍
I start test my Sound Blaster 16 with the Unreal demo, and then with this. Several times with loud volume. THANKS !!!
Thank you guys from all of my hearth. It maybe sound unbelievable, but this demo pushed me a lot. I became programmer, worked in game industry and now continue my life as a professional programmer. I am happy :)

Thanks for sharing this! I was 12 years old in 93. I think I got my PC about a year after that and I started writing tracker music, visiting BBSes over landline and visiting to demo-scene parties consequentially.
It was such a fun time to be around.
I've been listening to tracker-music on youtube again now and it makes me remember how this music was really underground and unknown by most of the population, it was a parallel musical universe that I am still grateful for.
The music of Second Reality was one of the most awesome tracks I ever heard and still is today in 2020!!! Second Reality would not have been as awesome as it was if it wasn't for the (synchronized) music!

Loved this. It speaks to how awesome you made the demo back then, that so many of us still love it. I still have the songs on my playlists and I watch the demo from time to time. Seriously, incredible job you did!
This is one of the demoscene groups that shaped my taste in music. I grew up on a cow farm out in the middle of nowhere. Getting out to a monthly disk swapmeet was my only lifeline to music. VERY thankful for the demoscene and cracktro groups!

There are several other good Demos over the years but this is the one that all others are compared to. All these years later it still blows my mind what these guys (and others) could sit and code a machine to do--and how great it looked.
And "greets" to Purple Motion/Jonne Valtonen who is my age (born a few days after I was) and was 17 when this video was filmed. I've never met or spoken to you but have always had immense respect for the things you've done over the years.
+Jovetj Why? Why is "Second Reality" the demo that all others are supposedly compared to? I could see the Amiga do better in the same year.
+Foebane72 Because it blew people's minds at the time, that's why. It combined elements that other great demos had, such as effect/sequence variety, length, and a fantastic soundtrack into one presentation.
Please share with us the Amiga demo(s) that rival this one. I'd love to see them. I admit I've never really looked at Amiga demos, since I've never owned one. And since nobody else did either, that probably has something to do with why they're not around anymore. For better or for worse.
+Jovetj Desert Dream by Kefrens. It was the Amiga equivalent of its day, and it came out earlier, as I recall. It wasn't the only one, neither, the Amiga was blowing minds ever since 1991 with these new fancy demos that tried new and interesting things, and they only got better with AGA to exceed the PC specs of the time. And I'm assuming you're American and thus PC-biased, but the Amiga was HUGE in Europe, and the Amiga was unassailable in that market. Heck, it took the death of Commodore, Doom, and the consoles to overtake Amiga in the mid-90s.
+Foebane72 I happen to firmly believe token ring to be technically superior to ethernet, but ethernet still won out. The world moved on. You won't catch me whining about it 20 years after the fact.
I have known people who have had Amigas, and I've heard them sing their praises too. I hear Acorn computers were pretty good. There were also a few independent systems in the states that had merit, but they dried up as well. Since the ideal/perfect computing platform and operating system have yet to be invented, the market is waiting.
My point was that this demo is a defining moment in the PC demo scene, and this video is thus a piece of history. I don't recall writing that this demo can kick an Amiga's ass, because frankly I don't care. And the world has moved on.
+Jovetj There are still plenty of retro system users out there that are still making demos to this day, the Amiga hasn't "died", nor has the C64 or others. In fact, the Demoscene has brought about a comeback for some of these systems when otherwise they might've died out. And there's still retro gamers, too.

omg. you guys were my inspiration back in 1991. Your music demo "Second Reality' was a world wide sensation. Those were some very good times which inspired me to write music on computers and get involved in computers.

Greetings from 2020. I yet can remember when I attended Assembly '93, it was my first Assembly ever. Demos are nowhere near as they were on good old days. Then everything was limited and coders must had innovative ideas and skills.
Thanks Mika for uploading this. Did not bump into this vid until now but it is both a travel back in time to my youth as well as well actually very nice to see making of the second reality.
Memories of the old CRT displays, CPUs and making intros or demos with your friends in the dark / curtains closed preparing for the next Assembly etc. is something most of the modern generation cannot appriciate (or understand) anymore.

I can't even begin to describe how influential this demo was to me... Started me off on coding and tracking, both of which I do professionally to this day!

I have seen 2nd reality countless times. Inspirational. Awesome. Still fascinated by it after so many years.
I remember seeing "Second Demo" at a Radio Shack in Ohio back in the early 90's. The manager copied it on a floppy for my dad and to this day we still listen to it.
I refer to this when foreigners ask why there are so many game developers in finland. The demo scene of the 90's was memorable. Everyone was part of some crew. And if you didn't actively do some scene stuff then you had a BBS or some 'position' at your buddy's BBS.
So awesome to see Purple Motion live at work on the music! I've spend so many hours like that in Screamtracker when I was a teenager, listening to his music as a great example.

This is great. Second Reality was just so mind blowing at the time. So well put together with the music, the transitions, it really made me want to keep coding and programming. I was about 15 at the time. Now GPUs and shaders do all the work... What a time in the scene. Still wish i knew to this day how the interference effects were done in this demo... It was one of my favorite parts (the color smoky effect and the black and white circles)
the best demo recognition ever... that demo was set into all computer stores around back then to showcase what you can do with a computer! Why? Because that demo looked and sounded better than any games or demos at that time!
This is sick, I got to see my favourite demo tune being worked on in ST3!
I assume you know, but you can grab old tracker files and load them into Modplug. Very fun to look for hidden messages.

I also own an Amiga, and Amiga demos from back then suck because of all the wank and crappy grammar ("we're the best"... "look at this amazing cube"...). PC demos like this are just right down to the point and awesome demonstrations of what was possible.
Super awesome, thanks for uploading!! I remembering running this in 1993 on my 486 DX33 (my first PC, previously had an Amiga 500) and being totally blown away. Also this is one of the reasons I bought a Gravis Ultrasound the next year :-)

I got a copy of the demo back in 1994, and gave it to my local computer store to play it as a demo. They did (in the Netherlands).
