- Watch Nora the polar bear cub through her nearly first two years of life. Nora was born in a zoo on Nov. 5, 2015. At six days old, her mother left their den and didn't come back. Columbus Zoo keepers made the decision to raise her.

I heard a story once where someone picked up a puppy on the side of the road and cared for it for about a week, maybe two, before it’s unusual behavior caused the family to grow concerned and they took it to a vet.
After examining the animal, the vet told them that the it was completely healthy… and a black bear cub.
I forget the just of what ended up happening to it. I think the family cared for it another few weeks until details could be sorted out with a local zoo, which was kind of the only option due to it having been exposed to humans so extensively by that point.

I MET HER IN REAL LIFE! She’s such an entertainer! She would repeatedly swim under the water, look at us through the glass, and then dramatically flip up backwards into the air and do it all over again. She LOVES attention and applause!

Nora as a cub likes her bottle, her blankie and her stuffed animal buddy. Older, she likes belly flops into the pool. Our need to enjoy cuteness is not really an excuse for holding animals in captivity, though.
In Nora's case its complicated..she has grown in captivity, and if she is released to the wild she would not survive on her own

But they’re still wild- bring a hunk of meat around a hand-raised polar bear and you’ll see it in action. But that bear will always know it’s trainers and handlers, and will be more friendly towards them for the rest of its life.
