Let's go back to the days when there was no race involved, no political statements, and no male or female bashing. Give us great music like this again. Love this song by The Dazz Band. A pleasure to see both white and black people dancing together.
Race was always present, non-white people simply didn't have the same access to express the things they experienced. I would prefer to not go back to less tolerant times, but hey, be a bigot :)
THIS is how it used to be ! Handsome guys, well dressed, singing & dancing together----------people smiling , dancing, & just loving the music ! THIS is how it once was. ---------RIP, to all members of The Dazz Band, who have passed. -----------MJL, 77 y/o
The Dazz Band are from my hometown. I am very luck to have been a Teenager lady in the 80s. We had the best music bands ever, lets see we had of course The Dazz Band, The Gap Band,The SOS Band, Midnight Starr,Con Funk Shun, Atlantic Starr,Cameo,Earth Wind & Fire, Klymaxx, and The Barkays,so many great bands. And the 70s,well the list would be too long for me to write all of the greatest Bands ever in the History of our Planet.
"Let It Whip" is a song released on February 12, 1982 by the Dazz Band and their biggest hit, peaking at number one on the R&B chart for five non-consecutive weeks. The single also reached number two on the Dance chart and number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song won the 1982 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. The Dazz Band is an American R&B, funk band most popular in the early 1980s. Emerging from Cleveland, Ohio, the group's biggest hit songs include the Grammy Award-winning "Let It Whip" (1982), "Joystick" (1983), and "Let It All Blow" (1984). The name of the band is a portmanteau of the description "danceable jazz".
Even though it was a lip-sync, I just love how the Dazz Band still belted it out and gave it everything, playing up to the cameras with their tight choreography. BTW, they really were singing, it was just to dead mics and their record played over the loudspeakers with the live mics picking up the dancers' wild applause. This was why AB still had that live element even with the low budget and lip-sync restrictions.
I love this vintage performance. I was 11 years old when this first came out and it was all over the radio back then. What I like about this "American Bandstand" clip is that even through they are clearly lip-synching to a record, they are having a lot of fun anyway and it shows. :)
Shiiittt...I'll be dammed..Sittin' at Mc Sleazee's and they playing this song while I'm listenin' to it on here...Dammm!!!!...Thats crazee !!!!!...Jan 2020...
I grew up in those dayz and there is definitely a difference, The whole theme has changed. Music was a professional skill that was driven from the heart. Songs meant something real, not fantasy. Talent was driven to the front of the stage along with style and elegance. Songs were sung from the diaphragm and lungs and the words would stick you right in your soul. You not only heard it but you could literally feel it. The mere thought to compare real talent of this nature to anything past this period is just the lack of experiencing what it was like to live through this era. I have lived through all five decades of music transitions and the 70's-80's are simply untouchable.
Thanks Bro.Daniel, Nick is a touch too sensitive and it was a momentary sentiment just to send a shout out to my Ohio brothers that i've had the good fortune to perform with.Anyway, as long as i've been on the UA-cam forum's you get these angry ingrates that think the World actually revolves around their opion's Only??Anyway, i can raise hell too but don't have time for arguments & unnecessary hassles from No One Important!!
When I am able to get together my own band I'm definitely going to have inspiration from these guys hands down lol love this band and I wish I was a young adult in the 80s so that I would've been able to experience it all
Hard to say as they both debuted in '82. I know when I was a kid and both songs were on the radio, I couldn't make out which one of the two it was until they got past the drum/synth intro. They were almost identical.
This shit is awesome, this music is great, and only managed to be good a couple more times in history , then you got today's bullshit witch is a joke these so called pop stars have no talent at all, its really quite sad, thank god for the video camera lol
Kevin Pritts,so true and I was lucky to have been a little girl in the 70s and a Teenager lady in the 80s. I experienced all of that great music, while growing up at that time. No disrespect towards this Generation, but I hardly listen to any of the 21st Century music. Sorry to say,but it is just not my style of music to listen to. I will always be a fan of the 70s & 80s music and I still listen to that music, that is why I am on here now watching music videos of the 70s & 80s.
sean moore The first 20 bars are identical. Are you serious? I always remember having to wait that entire minute to figure out if it was gonna be their song or Michael's. It's no secret that Michael sampled/jacked grooves and beats to construct his songs (he famously walked up to Daryl Hall and said Sorry I jacked "I Can't Go For That" to do the bassline of Billy Jean", But it could've been them who were inspired by him. The songs were released the exact same year. This goes back to producers and engineers who work with different artists and take one style from here to there.
plutorama you are dead on. Don't know what sean moore is listening to. Letr it whip was released a few months before Beat it. It's hard to imagine that they both came up with the same beat independently.
Kim Workman The song was released in early '82 and was #1 on the R&B chart, #2 on the Dance chart and hit #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This song also came in at #29 for the 1982 year end countdown on American Top 40 with Casey Kasem. I would assume late 82' when this was on AB.
you can tell this was one of the first songs that sounded more like the 80s. a lot of songs that came out from 80-81 still sounded like the 70s but this had a more futuristic sound for its time
"The music of Black people" ???? I dont know if I am flattered or insulted. Flattered in a way (because we all knew it was different. Thanks for the acknowledgement). Insulted in another way, because I thought it (we, you, me) are more "American" than Black! Do we reallly want to be so blatant in differentiating? Thumbs down on this video for his comment. Forgiven, though, because this was a long time ago. Imagine that. Black people music (as opposed to White people music...). Kind of made my stomach feel funny. (0:14)
+Karolyn Issup Well, Karolyn, you'll notice that the video has multiple quick edits--and it seems that it happens right at the quote in question. I don't know if that was done intentionally (was it, Skip Martin?), but it makes it sound a little more racist than the original comment probably was. We'd have to see the master tape to know for sure but I absolutely believe that Dick Clark had an affinity, passion even, for jazz, r&b, disco, and all other "black" music and would never knowingly insult someone on that level. :)
+Craig Winter He wasn't the "token", dude. He was working in a music store when band members happened in and heard him play. After that, they wanted him in the band ... and it wasn't because of his skin color ... it was because he's a killer player. Let It Whip wouldn't have had that special sound without him, guaranteed.
That dude is still playing, although in a different genre. He has been with Trisha Yearwood for many years. Now plays with Garth Brooks as well as Trisha.
That " Token White Guy" is one of the main reasons this song had the sound that it did, He's Funky as he Wanna be, and versatile as hell (musically) Now, He Play With Garth (Bad Ass) Brooks. Now! Today! Steve Cox, is his name.
1983 at 31 this was the jam now it's 2024 at 72 this old girl still jamming and listening to this old school music 🎶 🎵 👌
American bandstand and the soul train were the best !!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
Let's go back to the days when there was no race involved, no political statements, and no male or female bashing. Give us great music like this again. Love this song by The Dazz Band. A pleasure to see both white and black people dancing together.
When the hell was that?
lemme guess…..
you’re white.
👍👍👍👍👍
I agree ❤

This song had the streets on fire when it dropped.

Dayumm wish I was there!
Everyone's having so much fun!
Best dance song of all time!
Nt the best one of the best
One of the best songs to dance to in the 80's right?
Even though it was a lip-sync, I just love how the Dazz Band still belted it out and gave it everything, playing up to the cameras with their tight choreography. Yup. Anything with a good beat ❤
At the young age of 20 when this came out I was getting my dance on big time.. Yup!!! Good Times!!
I give BIG PROPS to these guys..They came and did a Tour in Iraq..Got to see them at COB Speicher in 2011..
I love this vintage performance. I was 11 years old when this first came out and it was all over the radio back then. What I like about this "American Bandstand" clip is that even through they are clearly lip-synching to a record, they are having a lot of fun anyway and it shows. :)
I had the great pleasure to see The Dazz Band Live at the PVA Pomona Valley Auditorium in 1984 They were AWESOME!!! JOY STICK !!!!
Shiiittt...I'll be dammed..Sittin' at Mc Sleazee's and they playing this song while I'm listenin' to it on here...Dammm!!!!...Thats crazee !!!!!...Jan 2020...
Saw these guys at the Space Mountain stage at Disneyland in '84 and in Long Beach in '86 and 2006. Still love them -- such a fun band to see perform!
Skip Martin is the sexiest mofo still. Ive always loved this song and just now seeing the faces of the voices behind the mics.
Back when music was the sh**😄😄 Nowadays you dont hear music like this anymore😞😔
So true

Nick Lewis
Dude, chill out..
Black people are unique and amazing so it's neccessary to disinguish when refering to us.

I saw them perform this at Red Rocks high in the Colorado Rockies back in 1982!
I love Michael Jackson and I really believe he was inspired to write BEAT IT after hearing LET IT WHIP!
Could be...I never noticed that before! :)
I love this song!! It keeps skipping :( I totally grew up listening to this :)
love the Dazz band since I was a shorty. 48 now

Who says nothing good ever came out of Cleveland!
I love this song let’s it rip
Fantastico
It is borderline infuriating to me how much this skips.
Agreed. *Very* disconcerting :(
WTF?
Well, to be fair, the name of the guy who posted it is… “Skip.”
“Let it Skip” by Dazz Band ft. Skip Martin
Back when it was cool to be cool!
Awesome
Good song

Wish I was born in 1980, instead of 1970.
Love da funk
Damn! What the hell was all the skipping about?! This is a jammin song too...
Ikr what the hell was going on 🤷🏿♂️
Oh, all that 80s hair in the audience!
Lead singer is handsome😍
Pardon me if I'm wrong, but this seems like a live performance and it's a good one.
Verdadeiro funk.
Great!

Still lovin this tune in 2024😅😊
I just found that this is Skip Martin's account? You look like never aging.

The Homies!
Is it me or does this sound like the inspiration to Michael Jackson's BEAT IT???
Hard to say as they both debuted in '82. I know when I was a kid and both songs were on the radio, I couldn't make out which one of the two it was until they got past the drum/synth intro. They were almost identical.
+Ramon LeBlanc Harts 100%, good call. Quincy and the team also were influenced by things around them but yes, in particular they ripped this off lol
Billie jean debuted in 82'------- Beat it Debuted in 83'------ Let it WHip -- 82'---- source --- Discogs
Ramon LeBlanc Harts I thought Beat It was 83, Let it Whip was 82.
Off the charts
Bad ass.
Does anyone what year this was on DC show?
Thank you Sir Andrew!!
I'm guessing when the hit single was new. Probably 1982.
Song was very hot then still hot today

Beta or VHS?
I wonder who used this beat first. These guys, or Quincy Jones on Michael Jackson's Beat It.
Huh. They produced their own music and this sounds nothing like beat it.
sean moore

Only on SOOOOOUU...er I mean American BAAAANDSTAAAAAAAND
Skip is very cool!!
Why are there so many skips in this video???
What’s up with the editing/skipping on this???
Digital capture from an old VHS tape is my guess.
Look at the white folks in the audience trying to dance to funk music. lol
They weren't pros like the line dancers on Soul Train.
have you seen clips from the late 70's ?
Though I do agree that it's funny, funk is for everyone, baby.
dumb ass statement, cuz. Maybe they should have kicked out the keyboard man because of his paleness, right?
derickg73 That one sister getting it though!!😋😋
Música do gta andreas,da rádio bonde fm
did he say the music of black people???
Back not black
C'mon SKIP!
you can tell this was one of the first songs that sounded more like the 80s. a lot of songs that came out from 80-81 still sounded like the 70s but this had a more futuristic sound for its time

Horrible video! I saw them in the early 80's at The Circle Star....Very nice guys.
Your video keeps skipping all over the place.
great song ...bad editing. too much skipping
Prerecorded and they are lip syncing
All of American Bandstand's guests were pre-recorded and lipsynced.
booo
skips a lot
Very poorly done
