Another great Steve Martin film is "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid," which is made by editing in a whole bunch off classic black and white films together to have him acting along with classic scenes, in a separate story. It's hilarious & fun. And, it's also directed by Karl Reiner.
You couldn’t go wrong doing an entire Steve Martin marathon. Roxanne. The Man with two Brains. Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. All of Me. And that’s just scratching the surface.
Hi Dawn Marie, after seeing the fellow (Bill Macy) who developed and marketed " Opti-Grab " for Mavin Johnson. I have remembered that he was in another excellent movie called " The Late Show " (1977). Haven't seen it in yearsbut it's loveable.
I love that when you were talking about Steve Martin movies then mentioned John wick in the same breath. It reminded me of one of my favorite movies. Parenthood. Has both Steve Martin and Keanu Reeves. It is one of the most charming heartfelt films. It will make you laugh and cry. Highly recommend Parenthood. Star studded.
I haven't seen any of the John Wick movies, but did he really kill someone with a pencil? In one of Thomas Perry's Jane Whitefield books,, "Dance for the Dead (1996), a judge tells Jane, "I understand you are one of those people who could kill me with a pencil." Jane replies, "If i were, I wouldn't need the pencil." This match seems too specific to be a coincidence. Your thoughts?
The new phonebooks are here! The new phonebooks are here! I'm picking out a thermos for you. Not an ordinary thermous will do. Vinyl with stripes and a cup built right in.
I agree with Dawn that Dr. Strange love is kind of funny but only in a very cynical sense. And given the type of leaders we've seen in the world, it feels a lot more like a documentary than it was intended to. So I can relate to not laughing at what is really a very depressing movie.
Strangelove is satire, so there is meant to be a strand of truth through it. That movie was made about leaders of the time - I doubt they change much, but the US seems to reward people who are openly dishonest.
Here are two of my favorite Steve Martin hidden comedies with something extra Roxanne (1987) Steve at his very best & The Big Year (2011) stars Steve, Jack Black & Owen Wilson A movie about birding... yes, a contest to see who can count the most species of bird in one year An interesting movie about a real-life contest and of course very funny !
I love Steve Martin. One of the funniest, most original minds in comedy. I can recommend the early Woody Allen comedies. “Annie Hall” is a great movie. But his earlier movies “Take the money and run”, “Bananas” and a few others are sillier, like “The Jerk”. Enjoy!
Back in the day, before convenience store type of gas stations, gas station bathrooms were located outside of the gas station. Owners would keep their bathrooms locked to keep out the homeless people. You had to ask for a key to go to the bathroom. Many times the key would get stolen or the patron would forget to return it and this meant the owner had to incur cost to change the lock. Many owners went to great extremes to prevent their key from getting stolen or lost. Using a heavy car rim as a key chain was the most common one that I saw. Others would simply keep your drivers license until you returned the key.
If you are looking for comedies to watch, consider "Tootsie", "Bowfinger"(starring Steve Martin), "Office Space", "Easy Money", "9 to 5", "Analyze This", "My Blue Heaven"(starring Steve Martin).
Awesome movie choice! My brother and I still reference this movie, so many quotable lines! One of my all time favorites and a much better choice than Dr Strangelove.
The word "jerk" has evolved to mean a person who is rude or disrespectful, but the original sense of the word was a perennial victim, a hapless person to whom bad things always seem to happen, and I think that's the sense intended here. To use a classic example, if a "jerk" in the present sense of the word was a guy who went to a fancy dinner and spilled his soup, a "jerk" in the original classic sense would be the guy he spilled it on.
I don't care what others say. Steve's movie work is real hit or miss. And that's coming from a HUGE Steve Martin fan. The good ones are: Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (though it is cobbled together from old film noir movies and if you don't keep that in mind, you'll miss its genius), Roxanne, L.A. Story and Little Shop of Horrors. The rest are all barely okay, and that's being generous. His early stand-up however...that stuff is epic. Look up his shows from the mid to late 70's. The guy was a freakin' rock star. He was the first stand up comedian who could pack out 40, 000 seat venues. Auditoriums period. Prior to that, comics only played clubs. His autobiography, Born Standing Up is really, really good too. And it's short. Other movies that have the same stupid kind of humor, but are still good include Idiocracy, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, Barbarella, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, UHF (Weird Al movie) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I'm also a huge fan of Raising Arizona, though it's a different kind of absurd. It's still the Citizen Kane of comedies in my book. Not an ounce of fat on it. And it's probably the only good acting performance Nicolas Cage ever turned in. On a completely different note, in my forth novel, one of the main characters names her cats Dingbat and Fuckhead. I wasn't even thinking about this movie when I did that. Now I feel kinda bad, even if she had a good reason in the book.
The bit at 8:30 is kind of an inside joke. You see, back in the pre-internet days if someone paid by credit card the merchant would check to see if it was stolen or reported missing by looking in a special booklet that was printed weekly to see if that card's number is in it. The joke is that there are HUNDREDS of card numbers on EACH page and they are printed REALLY tiny, so for him to find the stolen credit card number in 2 seconds is the joke.
Dr. Strangelove is a Stanley Kubrick film, and Kubrick loved "The Jerk." He invited Steve Martin over to his house where he discussed working together on a project that became "Eyes Wide Shut" many years later.
Gotta watch Steve Martin in 'Planes, Trains, and Automobiles' also starring John Candy. It is quite funny, and the perfect time of year to watch as the holidays are coming up.
My Blue Heaven is a great Steve Martin film with the bonus of also starring Rick Moranis. LA Story is also great, I think it's sposed to be a retelling of something Shakespearean. Which reminds me of Roxane one of my favorite Steve Martin movies which is a retelling of Cyrano De Bergerac. Three Amigoes and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels are also two of my favorite movies with him.
I love this movie, and for me it’s the pinnacle of Steve Martin’s comedy. I really rank it personally above Animal House and Caddyshack for my tastes. So glad Dawn’s reacting to it, because I would love to see it get some more exposure.
There was a popular expression in America that is seldom used anymore. It went, "You don't know shit from Shinola." Shinola was a very popular boot polish in the first half of the 20th century. The expression means you're ignorant....like you could step in shit, and not know if it was shoe polish or shit on your shoe.
Steve Martin started out writing for the Smothers Brothers in the 60s. He was a regular guest host of Saturday Night Live in the 70s, as well as a popular stand up comedian. In fact, that cat juggling joke was reused from one of his standup routines. He also played banjo and sang funny songs during his standups and now he has a second career as a bluegrass banjo player, touring with well known bluegrass musicians. My favorite Steve Martin movies are Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and L.A. Story. I think his appearance as “The Great Flydini” on the Tonight Show in 1992 was one of the funniest things he’s ever done: m.ua-cam.com/video/s9xKU8eYCFk/v-deo.html
More Steve Martin silliness can be found in The Man with Two Brains. For a more mainstream comedy/drama with some more serious Steve Martin acting, check out Parenthood (which has a really stacked cast and good performances all around).
A classic farce. Other really great Martin films that are under watched are "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", "Roxanne", "Planes, Trains and automobiles".

For all of us that got to watch this video from beginning to end isn't this one of the most adorable person in the whole world
_All of Me_ is a great Steve Martin movie that I haven't seen mention of in these comments. He does some fantastic physical stuff in that.
Here are two of my favorite Steve Martin hidden comedies with something extra
Roxanne (1987) Steve at his very best
& The Big Year (2011) stars Steve, Jack Black & Owen Wilson
A movie about birding... yes, a contest to see who can count the most species of bird in one year
An interesting movie about a real-life contest and of course very funny !
"The Grand Canyon" was excellent, though more dramatic than comedic, and Steve's role in it was a supporting one. Still, it deserves more attention .
You are the first reactor I've seen do The Jerk, so you are therefore the best reactor on the internet.
You would love the Three Amigos
Steve Martin is a legend!!!!love his work!!! A Fun film and a great reaction 💗💗 is all we need today 😇🙌🏻 hugs lysm Queen Dawn Marie 🌹stay unique!!!!
"Roxanne", "Bowfinger", "L.A Story" and absolutely the best one "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid"
If you are looking for comedies to watch, consider "Tootsie", "Bowfinger"(starring Steve Martin), "Office Space", "Easy Money", "9 to 5", "Analyze This", "My Blue Heaven"(starring Steve Martin).
Steve Martin was also in " Dirty Rotten Scoundrels " with Michael Kane . And yes " Airplane 2 " is worth watching 🛫🛫
"Roxanne" would be my recommendation for your next Steve Martin movie. It's a comedy / romance movie that is one of my favorites.
First off, grew up loving The Jerk so I appreciate the review. Second, absolutely love your sweatshirt! Thank you for that as well.
One Of Steve Martin's Best Performances, Cool Reaction As Always Dawn, Take Care Sweetie 🥰🥰🤩🤩❤️❤️
One of my favorite Steve Martin movies is
My blue Heaven
With Rick Moranis
I love this movie, and for me it’s the pinnacle of Steve Martin’s comedy. I really rank it personally above Animal House and Caddyshack for my tastes. So glad Dawn’s reacting to it, because I would love to see it get some more exposure.
Out of all the react channels I watch.... the jerk has never been reacted to. Well played. 😁 instant subscribe.
There was a popular expression in America that is seldom used anymore. It went, "You don't know shit from Shinola." Shinola was a very popular boot polish in the first half of the 20th century. The expression means you're ignorant....like you could step in shit, and not know if it was shoe polish or shit on your shoe.
This is one of my favorite movies!! More Steve Martin in this vain of comedy are Dirty Rotten scoundrels, and The Man With Two Brains. So funny
Story. I think his appearance as “The Great Flydini” on the Tonight Show in 1992 was one of the funniest things he’s ever done:

More Steve Martin silliness can be found in The Man with Two Brains. For a more mainstream comedy/drama with some more serious Steve Martin acting, check out Parenthood (which has a really stacked cast and good performances all around).
A good Steve Martin film, I recommend Three Amigos with Chevy Chase and Martin Short.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is my favorite Steve Martin movie. It and Roxanne (a retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac) are both great movies to watch.
Oh yes, Roxanne is really good. And dirty Rotten scoundrels is great
