Wow, this is such an interesting variety! You've made me want to read the George MacDonald book. I need to try Margaret Oliphant, too, because I love Trollope.
Did you know there's actually a connection between the two? Not only are they both Scottish (and both much neglected today) but as I understand it, Margaret Oliphant was responsible for getting MacDonald's first "realistic" novel published (David Elginbrod, in 1863.) She called it a work of genius and insisted that her publisher accept it.
Also, while the original of the MacDonald story mentioned in the video is well worth reading, "The Fisherman's Lady" is actually an abridgement of it. GM's own 1875 novel is simply called "Malcolm." I know a lot of people are keen on MacDonald abridgements, and I'm not saying they don't have their place, but since all the other books in the list are original/complete, perhaps Kate is unaware that this one is edited?
Do give “Bleak House” a second read. You’ll be glad that you did. I agree with you about the Jarndyce and Jarndyce case. Trollope is a pure delight to read. I spent an entire summer reading the Palliser novels and had so much fun. This summer I am rereading George Eliot’s books. She’s my favorite Victorian author. I always feel so uplifted when I read her books. They inspire me to be a better person.
I was so excited to see this video pop up this morning! I love this series! I'm surprised that Barchester Towers ranked lower than The Warden. Interesting.
I keep thinking Bleak House might be the next Dickens I head towards, was glad to hear your thoughts. Similarly, the fact that Barchester Towers is at this point in the list makes me rather excited to get to the rest of the series as I rather enjoyed it.
I have wanted to try Trollope for a while, but I wasn’t sure which one to start with. I’ll have to read one soon! Also, I’m glad there are some Dickens you like 😂
The Woodlanders was my first Thomas Hardy and I really liked it. It made me live Hardy.
Edit: I would put The Warden lower than Barchester Towere.
