I remember as a teenager back in 1976 making mix tapes and sitting in my bedroom waiting for this song to come on the radio so I could record it . I'm now in my sixties and i still like this tune.
And those years have passed at a a rate so fast that the mind boggles. Crazy thing with myself (and others?) is? As I have gotten older last month feels like decades ago and decades ago seem like only last month.
I was 2 when this came out, and remember it was on a double gatefold vinyl mixed hits album my parents had, and this remains one of my favourite songs 46 years on... absolutely beautiful Always get chills when the organ starts and the bells toll Amazing song, underrated but at least that means it's not been played to death ❣️
Wait... so that’s Midge Ure with a no.1 in 1976 with Slik. I never knew. The guy who had all those hits with Ultravox, wrote 'Fade to Grey' for Visage, went solo and had another no.1, THEN co-organised Band Aid and Live Aid, and is now an ambassador for Save the Children. Er... where’s the fricking knighthood?
Yeah I agree. Just a note though that the band didn't write this. It was written by a guy who used to write for the Bay City Rollers, which considering how it sounds after the medieval stuff isn't really a shock.
Happy Birthday Midge Ure born on October 10, 1953. He is a Scottish musician, singer-songwriter and record producer. His stage name, Midge, is a phonetic reversal of Jim. Ure enjoyed particular success in the 1970s and 1980s in bands including Slik, Thin Lizzy, Rich Kids, Visage, and as the second frontman of Ultravox. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midge_Ure#
I remember going to see The Bay City Rollers in 1976 in the old Odeon in South Clerk Street, & Slik were their opening act, I think they only had 2 chart hits, Forever & Ever also Reqieum.. They were good but Punk was starting to take over so it left that kind of music & hits in the dust, a shame really but out of the 5 in that band I think Midge Ure was the only one to become anything of themselves, he was good though....
brilliant, remember like yesterday , still sounds as great , i am 57 years now , thanks very much

Sir James Ure sounds perfect. Cambuslang's local hero
Not long until the New Year Honours List. About time for Midge to be more than an OBE.

Yep. He didn't write this though.
Didn't know that Midge Ure wrote this. There's an eerie undertone here - brilliant!
He didn't. Bill Martin and Phil Coulter did.
