  • In December of 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 became the first people to leave our home planet and travel to another body in space. But as crew members Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders all later recalled, the most important thing they discovered was Earth.
    Using photo mosaics and elevation data from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), this video commemorates Apollo 8's historic flight by recreating the moment when the crew first saw and photographed the Earth rising from behind the Moon. Narrator Andrew Chaikin, author of "A Man on the Moon," sets the scene for a three-minute visualization of the view from both inside and outside the spacecraft accompanied by the onboard audio of the astronauts.

    What an experience that would have been. To see it all as it really is, a blue marble suspended in the black void of space. The only home we have ever known. It's just as the astronauts themselves describe it, ironic that you go out there to explore the universe but you really discover the Earth.

    While pretty, its not as gorgeous as a beautiful sunrise. We are lucky to live on Beautiful Earth. We should cherish it and protect it because it doesn't get better that what we already got.

      Lol just think dude.. in order to take a pic of the earth from that far away you would need a camera with 100000 megapixels...but hey 40 years ago they took it and you can see even the clouds lol..im not saying the earth is flat..im saying some things dont make sense based on logical things..

    • @danielcarney7873

      @@pescadinho1982 It's... the Moon. You can see the Moon from the Earth and you don't need a "100000 megapixel" camera. And, guess what, the Earth's bigger, so it would be even *more* visible than that.
      Come on, man, as the OP said, please don't ruin this video.

      @@pescadinho1982 that's like saying u can't see the stars or the sun even though they are far in space too. Do u know how big the earth is? Bigger than the moon. 12700 km in diameter.

      carlos pacheco The 1968 photo matches the 2018 photo taken by China micro satellite. Remember before Apollo 8 no one ever left Earth atmosphere. How would they envision it and paint it without seeing it?

    Actually the earth is a rhombus with two horns, one tail and a very flat looking head.

    I would have thought that compared to viewing the moon from Earth, that viewing the Earth from the moon would have had a much larger portrait. One would think that by this footage, the moon is bigger than Earth. Why is that? Is Earths atmosphere creating a magnification of the moon?

    • @thomaswijgerse723
      @thomaswijgerse723 5 років тому +7

      the earth on this photo does look a lot bigger then a photo of the moon on earth.

      If you are right next to an object, then it's occupying a larger portion of your field of view.

      And also yes the atmosphere adds some magnification depending on where the moon is in relation to the horizon.

  • @shammusomalley8986
    @shammusomalley8986 4 роки тому +1

    The earth rise is impossible due to the fact that the geosynchronous orbit means we only see one face of the moon. What that means, is if you’re standing on the moon, you may be in a position to see earth, or may may not be, but the surface of the moon is not going to rotate, so that the earth comes into view, because of the geosynchronous orbit, you’re not rotating

    • @willoughbykrenzteinburg
      @willoughbykrenzteinburg 3 роки тому +14

      The Earthrise photo was not taken from the surface. This photograph was taken on Apollo 8 - which never even landed. This photo was taken from lunar orbit. Apollo 8 orbited 10 times. On the third orbit, they reoriented so that they could see the horizon, and upon coming out of radio blackout on that third orbit, the first Earthrise happened as the CSM orbited around the moon and the photo was taken.
