      I have on average 30-40 tabs open at all times, and I never close my web browser haha. Although, even if I only had 16 gigs, it really wouldn't matter too much as computers are pretty good at moving data between memory and virtual ram based on what you are doing at any given time. Maybe if you are using a hdd that could be an issue, but I think it's safe to say the majority of people at least have an ssd nowadays. It really only impacts you if you are needing to use more then 16 gigs at once. Having tabs open in the background while you game won't actually impact you, it would simply be offloaded to your virtual ram space if you need more ram for what you are doing and only retrieved when needed. If you had programs actively running in the background while you game, that would be an issue. But web browsers aren't actively running in the background as much as they are just static and there, resting and not actually needed to be loaded in system ram while waiting for you access them.

    You don’t need 32Gb but you’ll definitely benefit from it. Not in terms of fps but for the overall user experience; less stuttering, more smoothness, just a better experience overall.

    • @SiCSpiT1
      @SiCSpiT1 2 роки тому +6

      It's a shame people don't understand the difference between benchmarks and user experience. The only way you can show someone the difference is by using their current system with 16GB and then upgrading to 32GB.

    • @SiCSpiT1
      @SiCSpiT1 8 місяців тому

      @K.C-2049 I remember one of the guys from Hardware Unboxed answering a subscriber question about 'who would benefit more from having 32GB of RAM between casual and competitive players,' the one with the darker hair, I forget his name, said something to the affect of, ‘Well, if you’re a competitive player you’ll turn down settings and close programs for the lowest latency and casual players won’t notice the extra latency/ benefit from the lower latency.’ As if there’s no one in between, who sweat it out during the latest COD release and enjoy RPGs in the summer.
      The main issue is, as of yet, there’s no way to objectively measure user experience with repeatable results, while ensuring the exclusion of confirmation bias and user error. The only thing we can agree on is higher framerates for gaming and everything else is lost to subjective experience if it can’t fit into bar charts. You’ll notice most tech channels only recommend what you ‘need’ to reach the typical framerates, at a given resolution, relative to the capability of a GPU. Because of this I’ve see posts online from goofballs with specs like: r5 5600G, 16GB RAM, 4090; Asking if they should upgrade the CPU and memory after upgrading to a 4090 since they only play games at 4k. Even better yet many of the comments mindlessly state that it’s not worth it because there’s little to no FPS to be gained. Not, "you idiot, you've just burned at least $1600 on a GPU. What's an extra $200 going to hurt?" or "If you can afford a 4090 to day, why did you put it in a $500 budget when it was new?"
      What I find ridiculous is how there’s only a vocal minority able to square this circle and notice that, in the US market, gaming PCs over a $1000, let alone a single component, are existing the “all you need” territory and are entering a compromise reduction connoisseur domain. You either get the click bait “console killer” or the >$5000 envy builds. Very few are willing to stick their neck out, at least in the techtube sphere, and draw a line and say a system with 6 cores, 16GB RAM, on a $100 motherboard isn’t good value at $2000, you’re being a cheap ass not frugal, or at worst scammed. If you’re forced to use a USB splitter on your brand new $1800 desktop, you got played.

I found that in recent months, I would start to run out of memory frequently with all of my apps open and would even sometimes get crashes. A big culprit was Chrome memory hogging when I had alot of tabs open and/or having the app running for too long. Only gaming I really do is WoW and old stuff.
    To my surprise, I found that despite it being ancient, the motherboard is able to support up to 32 gb ram so I spent $100 on a kit. The thing runs amazing now, like new. I think that this upgrade will give me a number more years out of the computer. Happy about my purchase.

I suspect that this will be sooner, than a lot of people think. You will start seeing more and more games being developed along these lines with 8-cores, fast SSD's, more assets and 4K in mind, soon after the consoles are released, since they will have them. I can see 32GB becoming the recommended specs in most AAA games maybe by 2022, especially once DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 drops, which will have SSD's capable of read speeds up to 16GB/s.

I haven't played the game or simulator or whatever it is but it not only uses more cores than an R7-3700x provides it's still limited by the single-core performance! At least based on the video.

    Well. Escape from Tarkov or whatever it's called answered the question. It's RAM usage got up over 14gb. Windows 11 clean install uses from 1.9 to 2.6 just at idle with no programs running other than task manager. So that would, in theory, cause a 16gb RAM setup to crash.

    You can now get 32 GB kits for the same price as 16 GB kits. Or in some cases they cost 10-12 dollars more. There's no reason to get a 16 GB kit over a 32 GB kit at these prices unless you for some reason need ultra fast RAM for benchmarks or that 5 fps performance increase.
    That doesn't necessarily mean that you should *upgrade* from 16 GB to 32 GB right now, but if you are buying new RAM go with 32 GB. It's much more expensive to buy 16 GB now and upgrade to 32 GB a year or two down the line.

    Need? Perhaps not, but it will help. I often hit 16-24GB of ram used while playing games. My last system had 16GB and I often ran into low memory issues. Now I do have a triple / quad monitor setup and often run several programs while playing games.
    If all you are going to do is play one game and run nothing else, yes 32GB of ram is a little overkill. But if you plan on watching video on another monitor or run other programs you really do want 32GB.

    I know this video is 3 years old now. But yeah, every gaming system should have 32GB of ram. 64GB will be needed in a couple years, especially if you play in 4K. I play on just 1080 x 60. In Fortnite and Hogwarts Legacy, my system ram usage is usually up around 20gigs used. And that's with basically nothing else running in the background. If you have multiple monitors and want to have some YT videos, or Netflix playing on the other monitor, would be a bit higher. 32GB should satisfy most everyone's needs for a couple / few more years.

    I have 32 gigs of ram. I also have an 8 core cpu. Most games, on their own, don't fully use 32 gigs of ram. It's a different story when you are streaming, have multiple browser tabs and other apps open at the same time. Also, i regularly use a decompression/installer system that normally uses well over 20 gigs of ram. The more ram and cpu threads you have, the faster it works. Also i do audio work. I can sometimes have huge projects open. Ie an hours worth of samples and insturments. That almost maxes out my ram and hammers my cpu usage during playback.

    I just bought a 32G set for $75. The only game that needs it is a heavily modded Skyrim list called Arisen, which uses 10-12 gigs of VRAM and around 12-13 gigs of system RAM at any given time. I could run that with only 16G of RAM, but it isn't comfortable at all. I would have to close out all my programs in order to keep the game from stuttering due to a lack of resources. As far as my testing goes, Skyrim SE is the only game that has used more RAM than is typical and that is only due to mods that use 4K to 8K textures.
    For the price, though, I'd say to go for it. Right now (Oct. 2022) RAM prices are really good. I personally bought Silicon Power RAM as that was $10 cheaper than the competition. I'd definitely recommend 32G if you like having a lot of other programs open while you're gaming or you enjoy modded Skyrim.

    Sometimes large amounts of RAM help people who do not wish to use swap-space (virtual-memory etc.), so as to prevent wear-and-tear on a hard-drive (especially SSD/NAND).
    Additionally, some linux gamers like to boot an entire OS instance like a LIVE-CD/DVD iso (or similar image) into RAM, and sometimes also a virtual machine, so all settings are applied like a system image per game or per games-setup (a bunch of games).
    An entire (extra) OS is sometimes virtualised in addition to the gaming OS. That extra OS is used for other functions such as dedicating CPU power to voice-chat. This is because people often use a cheap CPU with a top-heavy GPU these days (as people are not made of money). If they do not do this, the fact that their CPU bottlenecks and maxes out _(which it will do, whether or not the extra core is 'spent' on a VM)_ means voicechat can cut out during gameplay.
    To use an extreme example, combining something like a fx8350 (versus an i5 4460) with a rx570 or rx580 can cause the CPU to max out at 100%, but also some games will max-out on the cores used, leaving the last core or two unused _(because not all games optimise for so many threads)._ Therefore, people dedicate those "squandered cores" to a VM just for stable voice-chat. Running a Movim instance is but one example. Other CPU architectures can end up using this (especially unlocked cores).
    It can be far cheaper to buy a bunch of cheap 2nd hand slower RAM than expensive fast RAM. For many gamers, the RAM in the screenshot at the start of the video is far beyond their budget for an entire PC, let alone RAM _(which is more like a 6th or 8th of that cost)._ About a third of that cost can often cover 32GB of DDR3. Also, some people use chinese boards retrofitted to use DDR3 on modern CPU. If such people really wanted 16GB, they could get four slower 4GB sticks. Otherwise 8GB is four 2GB sticks at 75p, thereby meaning £3, or $3-to-$4 _(i.e. about 10% of the cost your video outlaid)._
    If you add up all the various "cheap-hack" combinations of PC people use other than mainstream _(such as OEM fx8350/i5 or unlocked CPU or retroacted chinese DDR3 boards),_ the people using those are significant in numbers compared to those buying that DDR4.
    If it wasn't for people with tiny budgets learning to squeeze pennies out of hardware (like fixing-up old mining cards), you'd not be able to make videos on flashing a GPU bios etc. Remember them. Necessity is the mother of invention. For everyday gamers, a VM for voicechat can be less complex a trick to do than some of the RAM-eating examples in the video.

    It doesn't hurt to upgrade to 32gb of ram, the gains are very small, however, the gains are noticable IN SOME APPLICATION, more notable if you are streaming or have a lot of other apps open in the background while you game. These tests are done standalone on just the games themselves and not while simultaneously running multiple browser tabs, discord, twitch, spotify, etc.
    THOUGH I WILL SAY THIS: While having 32gb future-proofs you and gives you a slight edge in performance, especially when multitasking... there are other PC bottlenecks I would spend money upgrading FIRST before spending $70-80 on two additional sticks of ram. I would put the money towards a GPU or NVME SSDs first before I would upgrade ram if I am already at 16gb. Just makes more financial sense and you will notice bigger gains from that.
