Today we’re making what’s known as floating ornaments. No, that doesn’t mean that they float about in a pool of water! Thought that might look cool! No, It means they have an image INSIDE the clear ornament just appearing to float there as if by magic. Now last year I made a floating ornament the hard way - I took a clamshell ornament and hot glued this pretty paper scene inside it. But today I’m going to show you a MUCH easier way to get an image to float inside a clear ornament. In fact, I’m going to show you THREE different ways to make easy floating ornaments on a Cricut.
So you can make a floating ornament from nearly any type of ornament that has a smooth and clear exterior, like the ones on this tree. You just need to be able to get inside the ornament somehow. What you may want to avoid is an ornament with a faceted, textured, or less transparent exterior, like this one, because it’ll be very hard to see your floating image inside.
But you can use any size of ornament. I went out to the store and found all the sizes of clear ornaments available - everything from round ones that are 100 mm, 80 mm, and 60 mm to these flatter oval ornaments at 70 mm and 60 mm to these tiny little 40 mm ornaments. Even this lightbulb shaped ornament would work!
I’ve taken all of these commonly-shaped ornaments and created a series of ornament templates for you to use to create floating ornaments yourself. And you’ll use these templates to create your interior image - anything from a photo to text to a design, or any combination. And I’m going to show you exactly how to do that in each of the three ways.
For this project, you’ll need your ornaments - glass or plastic - and some transparency film, acetate, vinyl, an/or paper. You’ll also want to download my ornament templates so you don’t have to guess at the size and shape to use for your project. You’ll find those templates free in my resource library. jennifermaker.com/resource-li...
Key concepts taught in the video tutorial include how to slice, how to Print Then Cut, how to insert an image into an ornament, and how to fix an issue.

I love this. I have wanted to make this for a while now. One for my mother who we just lost and miss so much. Thank you for your instructions. You are a blessing.
Very good instructions. Glad you showed how to take the acetate back out of the ornament ball. I struggled when I made my own because I didn't think to put the tab on mine. They have a penchant to move around inside the ball if you shake them too much. I also added snow glitter, a small amount, to the bottom of the ball, on the inside. Your idea is so much better. Thank you. Next year will be alot easier to do, thanks to your craftyness.
Love these! I am in the process of getting everything together. I want to make glass oranments with the Grandchildren when they were babies for their parents. Then also make unbreakable ones for the Grandchildren with a cute snowman or reindeer. Every year I give the Grandchildren homemade ornaments for Christmas. Thank you for this wonderful project.
Oh, Carolyn, what a wonderful gift for both parents and grandchildren! Something they will treasure long after Grandma is no longer here! 😍
I just finished making these for my students. I took pictures of them with their arms up and added a little fake snow at the bottom. They turned out SOOOO cute! Thanks for sharing with very easy to follow directions!
That is awesome! Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks for the ideas. I made these floating ornaments many years ago..just by printing out a picture, cutting it in a circle and putting it in the ornament ball. I love we now have a Cricut to use. Very clever.
Thank you for all your wonderful tutorials. I love your creativity! I greatly appreciate your generosity with your projects and cut files. Merry Christmas!
Worked on this tonight! It’s so easy. Thanks so much. I can’t wait to watch and do more.

I add pictures of my grandkids every year to little picture frame ornaments. I really love the ones you made, I could just add the year with vinyl.

Awesome! Thank you!
Hello Jennifer I was in the pro cess of doing my floating ornaments thought I had everything. I clicked on the material list you had listed didn't pay attention that you were using staples film. I clicked on the one in the list it was Cricut brand. Well gotten ready to load it in the printer and it states can not be used in an inkjet printer. I had spent 3 hours loading pictures and changing the background for 16 pictures. Now I have to go to staples and get the one that you have shown in the video. You make everything look so easy to do. I wish I had paid closer attention to the supplies you mentioned in the video instead of looking at the material list below. I was so excited to be near finished. I have 16 floating ornaments to do and 25 mugs to design. Thank you for all you do
You are so welcome! ❤️
