The WORST LOCAL BROADCAST DISASTER in ABC Monday Night Football HISTORY | Cowboys @ Redskins (1983)

  • During week 1 of the 1983 NFL season on ABC's Monday Night Football between the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskin, one local broadcast in Seattle put on an absolute disaster of a presentation. Not only did KOMO, the ABC affiliate, controversially air the game on tape delay, and not only did a weird technical glitch cause viewers in the Seattle/Tacoma area to miss a part of the game, but their incompetence spoiled an incredible comeback and an incredible game to open up the season. And let's just say that people were not too pleased about it. This is the story behind the broadcasting controversy that impacted Monday Night Football in one of the largest TV markets in the USA
NOTE: If some clips have weird filters on them that make the image seem blurrier or darker than you might expect, that is because of UA-cam. That was the least intrusive filter I could have on those clips without the video getting blocked. Why the video got blocked, even though there are many clips of the exact same game available on UA-cam that do not satisfy the four fair use factors as set forth in Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, I have no clue; however, it was either do the video with the filter, or don't do the video at all

I have lived in Seattle all my life and remember the public wasn’t pleased about KOMO delaying MNF for many years. I also remember back in 1995 KOMO accidentally aired the 2nd quarter at the 7PM hour when they would air the kickoff! That was one of the factors why they changed that delay policy a year later.

As unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian historians might know I’m from Seattle originally (I now live in an undisclosed location). I was there when KOMO4 had its tape delay policy, so I took to regularly listening to the national radio broadcast. One time I listened and was very pleased with the final score of a game since I predicted it exactly right in a pool I entered. I was so happy I inadvertently ruined it for my dad, who wanted to watch it on KOMO4 on the delay.
Fun Fact: You mentioned how the NBA was routinely on tape delay on CBS. Game 6 of the 1980 Finals between the Lakers and 76ers featured Rookie Point Guard Earvin “Magic” Johnson starting at center and posting a 42/15/7 line in clinching the championship for the Lakers. The game was shown live in only four markets. The two cities in the game as well as…wait for it…Portland and Seattle.
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made videos about the following:
    1. How MNF started on ABC in 1970.
    2. How another Cowboys game two years earlier was aired on tape delay in Austin due to CBS believing the home of the University of Texas would much rather watch the US Open men’s finals than the Cowboys home opener against the Cardinals.

I lived in Hawaii in the late 70s/early 80s and the local stations would start the broadcast live and then insert additional commercials and delay the game slightly. By the end of the game, they’d be 15 minutes behind. They even did this during a Super Bowl, inserting local commercials into the very expensive time slots. This would always infuriate me! Monday Night Football was always tape delayed. The local news stations would advise you to close your eyes while they showed the score on the screen.

So, the live radio broadcast had been available for every Monday night game? If so, why is the spoiler effect suddenly an issue for this lost signal of just 10 minutes? I understand the problem, but could not anyone during all those years have heard the action jumped ahead by 1 hour just by flipping on a radio, or unintentionally being within earshot of one?

In the analog era, viewers in Seattle and points north were able to get CBC and CTV from Vancouver or Victoria either off air or via cable.

In 1983, Global Television Network in Ontario had a contract to broadcast Monday Night Football presented by Labatt's. There were occasions when Monday Night Football was blacked out because Toronto, where Global is based and served Southern and Eastern Ontario, was within the 75 mile radius of Buffalo and the game wasn't sold out. There used to be a UA-cam video describing why Monday Night Football was unavailable but that clip was taken down.
To answer your question, I'm not sure if the independent station in Vancouver whose call letter have escaped me, had a similar arrangement to show Monday Night Football.

This story isn't the only time a Seattle affiliate would choose to air something on tape delay in favor of something else. It also happened with NASCAR in 1990, with Seattle's CBS affiliate, KIRO, airing that year's Daytona 500 on tape delay, so they could air a SuperSonics game live. Any other year, this would've been nothing. But this was the year Spanaway, WA native Derrike Cope got lucky, and beat DALE EARNHARDT on the last lap, due to Dale losing a tire. They effectively spiked the ball into the ground on every single play that day.

At first I was surprised that part didn't already know there was a tape delay. I know as a kid, the local team's radio broadcast would suggest "turn down the TV & turn up the radio" during the game. If I were the radio manager there, I'd advertise that I had Monday night football an hour earlier as I presume there are some die hard fans or guys who maybe listen to the first 30 minutes in the drive home then don't worry about getting to the game late on TV as they eat dinner with the family.

KOMO 4 (said as KOH-moh; rhymes with Romo) was pretty brazen to keep doing that same stuff for 12 more years. That's just crazy! Technology was gonna catch up with the station sooner or later. I haven't heard about other stations in the Pacific Time Zone pulling that stunt, so KOMO 4 appeared to be an outlier. I can't believe that declining ratings for its 6 p.m. newscast is what it took for KOMO 4 to finally come to its senses.

Frustrating for Seattle area fans but nationally the big controversy involved ABC commentator Howard Cosell. During the game he affectionately said of Redskins receiver Alvin Garret "the little monkey really gets loose doesn't he." It so happened that Garret was black and thus the guess what hit the fan? One of the big objections came from the Reverend Joseph Lowery, President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He demanded an apology from Cosell. What the good Reverend may not have been aware of was that Cosell had been a strong supporter of civil rights. As for garrett he said he liked the broadcaster and added "I didn't feel that it was a demeaning statement." Jesse Jackson and Mohammad Ali also came to Cosell's defense. The incident contributed to Howard's decision to leave Monday Night Football after that 1983 season.

Not much official footage was kept (mostly stuff from the NFL Films archives, which aren't totally available) and unofficial stuff is people taping games off the air, and then having the sense to digitize that film later on and make it available in a way JG9 can get (though he seems to have all publicly available footage somehow). Enough people tape over the game after watching it to tape an episode of MASH or whatever and it's gone forever.

Am I the only one here who thinks KOMO did the smart thing (at least for the time) of running the games an hour late? Probably yes. But they had the top news program and didn't want to alienate those viewers with an NFL preempt. This was an era when VCR'S were gaining popularity for taping live programs for later viewing.
So it began an hour later. So some fans missed 10 minutes of a game. If those fans had so much invested in the game that it had to be "live", then they could listen to the radio broadcasts every week. In 1983, the nation wasn't as sports/NFL obsessed as they are now. KOMO made the best decision, in terms of ratings and their finances, for their west coast market. They still have the best news in Seattle, BTW.
