  • Lion dancing is an age-old Chinese tradition meant to ward off evil spirits and welcome good ones. The dance-with its giant, dual-dancer costumes and kung fu-based movements-dates back to the Tang Dynasty of the 7th century. It’s a demanding sport that requires the strength and stability of kung fu, but Kelly Wong and the lion dancers of the Chinese Freemasons Athletic Club in New York City’s Chinatown make it look effortless.

    As a part of Chinese class, during the Chinese lunar festival for the lion dance, I played the tail. It was really fun too :)

      Lion dance has two people to coordinate, Dragon dance has more than two, usually about nine!

      There is a Dragon Dance too - it's a larger variant of the Lion Dance. You don't see Dragon Dances in North America often tho.

    i think its awesome that there is a female who is leading or involve in the lion dance community... not to say there isn't any girls in your typical lion dance troupe but for her to be an instructor as well is quite amazing... she must of been doing this in her early childhood... it tastes a long long time before one can really be qualify to be an instructor or master in the troupe... good for her...

      I got to see a really long dragon that would have the roads blocked off as it was a massive event every year until I moved. It's always a really fun thing to see, and I hope you could see the ones in china were they jump from pole to pole, its really fun.

    This is really cool. But it's not lost in America, it's just not part of the American culture. But really what is our culture? I guess whatever another culture isn't, is our culture lol
    But I hope this spreads and becomes popular. Also what's with Asian cultures and training for years before beginning the first step. 1 year before holding the head? Damn guys lol

    • @tomek1678
      @tomek1678 7 років тому +10

      American doesnt have many cultures of it own because it's made of many different cultures. Beautiful!!

    • @LucidFL
      @LucidFL 7 років тому +2

      That means America does have its own culture, one massive culture consisting of many unique ones blended together.

    • @anotherfool9278
      @anotherfool9278 7 років тому +2

      From what I see, America doesn't have a distinct culture. That is because we encourage others to keep their cultures and bring them into our country and stick with them. Our melting pot is no longer melting, just adding more ingredients. I have heard a lot of people say "I am not American I am such and such". But why is it so bad to be American when you live in America?

    • @esbsinoweaib
      @esbsinoweaib 7 років тому +3

      a year doesn't seem that long tbh. since they have multiple routines to learn and stances/forms to nail before actually preparing to perform. not to mention the physical strain would hurt like hell if you just jumped in without taking time to prepare and build your body

    • @anotherfool9278
      @anotherfool9278 7 років тому

      but all Americans do have culture, just a lot of people don't adapt to the american culture. and a time limit isn't earning anything. what if you still suck at the end of the year or are amazing 2 months in? what if 415City, what if? XD

    How can you be 20 something years old and be a millenial? For beeing 20 you need to be born atleast in 1997. That is not even close to 2000

    • @Silverizael
      @Silverizael 7 років тому +4

      "Millennials (also known as Generation Y) are the demographic cohort following Generation X (mostly in western countries). There are no precise dates for when this cohort starts or ends; demographers and researchers typically use the early 1980s as starting birth years and the mid-1990s to early 2000s as ending birth years."
      Do note that the kids graduating from high school today are not millenials. They are the next generation, normally referred to as Generation Z.
