NYC Manhattan Chinatown, the original east coast Chinatown in the USA-where 6 generations of my maternal family have lived, visited and spent time- sharing culture, cuisines and happiness. The original NYC Manhattan Chinatown consisted of only 2 streets.
In the 1800s, if the Chinese men ventured outside of these 2 blocks, they were often beaten, taunted and cursed by the white man. Sadly, no law protected the Chinese from racist attacks, even when they were frequently murdered out of hate and from pure ignorance. It is heartwarming to see how much this Chinatown has grown since the early 1800s, now having expanded to Chinatowns in Queens and in Brooklyn, NYC. The original Cantonese immigrants to America would be proud of their immense sacrifices.
