    March 24th, 1975. In a bid for the vacant NABF Heavyweight Championship, "The Black Hercules" Ken Norton took on Jerry Quarry aka "The Bellflower Bomber" in Madison Square Garden, New York.
    Prefight records; Norton 32(25)-3, Quarry 50(29)-7-4.
    In early 1974, Quarry made the controversial complaint that he was avoided by the top Black Heavyweights of the division and that he was a victim of a conspiracy where the likes of Muhammad Ali, Ken Norton & George Foreman were boycotting him due to the color of his skin.
    When asked about Quarry’s remark before the fight, Norton stated;
    "I respect him as a fighter, but I don't like him one bit, I don't like him because he's a prejudiced man."
    Entering the fight, the #5 rated Quarry had notable wins over Floyd Patterson, Mac Foster, Thad Spencer, Buster Mathis, Earnie Shavers & Ron Lyle while the #4 rated Norton had top triumphs over Boone Kirkman and Muhammad Ali.
    Overall, it was a grueling affair between the 2 top tier Californians and former opponents of Muhammad Ali.
    In round 1, Norton’s 79” reach over Quarry’s 72” was an apparent advantage as he connected with a number of head snapping jabs and rights at long range. Quarry landed his share of flurries upstairs and downstairs with his best shot being a left to the body that rocked Norton to the ropes.
    In round 2, Quarry evidently had more successes particularly with body punches which created the opening for him to tag Norton with lefts and rights to the head by consistently moving in and out of firing range against the ex marine.
    In round 3, Quarry’s right eyebrow was badly cut by an uppercut which ignited a sense of urgency in him as he threw at an insanely high output while Norton countered off the ropes in an action-packed round. In the corner after the round, ringside physician Dr. Harry Kleiman examined Quarry’s eye and gave him the green light to carry on.
    In round 4, Norton started quickly by peppering Quarry’s face with jabs, right hooks and uppercuts from the get go and was in complete control for nearly 3 full minutes. Quarry was also cut on his left eyebrow but he displayed unbelievable guts and toughness by standing his ground against the onslaught.
    In round 5, Norton wasted no time and went for the kill with head shots after head shots but the unyielding Irishman continued to show his grit and often retaliated purely out of courage. At one point, he even managed to wobble Norton with 2 right hooks. However, the end was inevitable for him as he was pummeled with too many unanswered blows which prompted LoBianco to step in and halt the assault at the 2:29 mark.

    Quarry don’t get enough credit for his resume. He defeated Ronn Lyle, Earnie Shavers, Floyd Patterson, Buster Mathis, Mac Foster and gave Frazier a tough fight in his prime.
    Glad Norton was able to win the WBC belt before he retired.

      Yeah, he died pretty young from his battles in the ring too. He didn't duck anyone.

    Quarry took this fight on ten days notice (!) when he was in Hawaii, nowhere near enough time to prepare for a world class fight, especially against someone as fit as North. I've read that Jerry was stoned on cocaine when he agreed to the fight on the phone, after Norton's original opponent had backed out of their fight. That's considerable travel time and jet lag to get to New York and train in barely more than a week. After the fight, Quarry and Norton crossed paths in the parking lot. Norton, an egomaniac from his looks and being an only child (Larry Holmes called him Mr. Ken "My shit smells better than yours, Norton") taunted Quarry like Mr. T baiting Rocky, asking if Jerry's wife wanted a real man. Quarry challenged him to a street fight right then and there, no ref, rules or gloves. Norton recognized the difference between beating Quarry in the ring, and fighting Jerry (the quintessential Irish barroom brawler) where anything goes, calculated the threat to his movie star face, and got into his limo and left.

    Knowing what we know now and seeing the condition Quarry was in later in life, it's hard watching these later fights. His head was target practice at the end. It's like watching Ali's later fights after Frazier III. You just want to yell at them and tell them to get out of the ring. But every boxer knows the risks and knows what could happen. And the scary thing is that Quarry wasn't that old in this fight. He just had a lot of hard miles on him at this point.

    I thiink the match that really ended Quarry was the second Joe Frazier fight. Many felt before that this time Quarry might win with his wins of Shavers, and Lyle. too bad for Jerry that there was no Cruiser weight title, at the time. Ali I even believe said that Quarry would have been champ at that weight. NOrton was I felt robbed in his third match with Ali, and given a gift decison in his match with Jimmy Young.

    I Have A Question, Would Jerry Quarry, the man who Beat Lorenzo Zanon, Beat Jimmy Young?

    • @elnick1000
      @elnick1000 4 місяці тому

      NOt at the time he beat Zanon. But the man who beat Shavers and Lyle probably would have I think. Young was not a hard puncher. I always fetl taht QWuarry shoiud not have even fought Joe Frazier the first time, but gone after Jimmy Ellis a second time.

    a lot of people miss that Norton was caught with two successive rights that really staggered him, one before the bell and one after 4:41. amazing fight, should've been stopped earlier. Quarry took far too much punishment to the head.

    Quarry was 20 lbs over .his 188-190 back in the 60's ,Quarry no longer had the quick hands & reflexes .Watching this I think younger Jerry might have got Norton in trouble.
