Joe Frazier v. Jerry Quarry I
06/23/1969 🗂
~
One of the greatest inside close fights I've ever seen p4p in any weight class. Even higher on my life because of them both being heavyweights. 2 greatly known fighters, a tough and powerful Jerry Quarry & former world champion Joe Frazier go toe-to-toe which sadly was stopped on a Quarry cut. Despite it being in the greatest fights series, this is probably peak & prime Frazier in this fight after a couple even rounds, or at least the Ellis fight right after. A great one to watch.
~
Joe Frazier moving his record to 24-0 with 21 KO's.

People Talk About Frazier's Left Hook, But Quarry Had A Mean Left Hook Too! 🥊
that was a brutal fight.
Wow. look how Frasier throws throws double triple left looks.
The true definition of warriors
Great fight! Frazier and Quarry were two boxing warriors.
sadly both gone now.
This bout is one of the greatest heavyweight bouts of all time. The infighting and the other skills showed by these men is unbelievable.
❤ Agreed!!
Agreed. I don’t think but a handful of todays heavyweights could have withstood that onslaught of either of those two guys today. Absolutely brutal. I thought in these highlights Quarry wobbled Frazier a few times. I actually think Frazier was hurt, but he kept coming. Helluva a fight🔥
I didn't see Smokin Joe wobble, who gave Quarry all he could handle!!!
@@sparkspark2314 why are guys like you in every single comment section? We get it already, boomer - you believe everything was better yesterday, would you mind keeping that cliche' to yourself from now on?
I don't see any skills, huddled up trading blows until someone falls is not sweet science. Hit and not be hit is the objective. Both these guys suffered in their sunset years because of their inability to slip punches.
My Goodness. This fight was one for the ages. God bless them both,
I remember this fight more than any other. They both stood head-to-head banging each other for five rounds. No dancing no chasing just two big men banging it out. I didn't remember the outcome without pulling it up but I certainly remember the action. They were Unforgettable
this was the fight that led to jerry to start to show signs of the dementia he was to suffer from in later years.
I have never seen a fight like this. Two great fighters locking up in close quarters and just banging away at each other. They might as well as had this fight in a phone booth because that is all the room these guys needed or wanted.
I have NEVER in my LIFE seen a boxing match as brutal as this!!! No bobbing and weaving, shucking and jiving just pure MAYHEM!!! 😮💨
Huh? WTF does Shuck & Jive mean, and how does it apply to boxing?
One of the best all time Heavyweight Championship Fights of all time. Both fighters went toe-to-toe, the bombs were whistling and landing. The 1st and 2nd rounds were Quarry's with Joe coming on in the 3rd round and taking control. But Smoking Joe earned his pay that night, because his win came at a high price! Jerry's face looked terrible at the time the fight was stopped. He gave it his all and came up short. Frazier was at his peak, an unstoppable opponent, that overcame a very tough fighter, in Jerry Quarry. Never could understand why Jerry didn't fight Frazier the way he fought Floyd Patterson previously. Using his excellent boxer-puncher skills to move in and around the power of Frazier's aggressive style and his awesome punching power. He certainly would have stood a better chance using that tactic than standing toe-to-toe with a hard-hitting machine like Joe was. Both fighters threw some of the hardest shots, many landed and some didn't, ever seen in a heavyweight fight for modern times!
Apparently Quarrys father always encouraged him to fight on the front foot, aggressively. As a opposed to using his boxing skill as you mentioned
Great analysis, l totally agree about Quarry. He was not only tough but he had true boxing skills. His strategies could often be called into question. I remember him fighting Jimmy Ellis and Quarry had Ellis in trouble and for some reason wouldn't let his hands go. It was so frustrating to watch. Jimmy Ellis was a serviceable enough fighter but he was beatable and Quarry should have won that fight. To me something there didn't smell right.
Frazier was a superior fighter but Quarry had enough talent where if his strategy would have been better who knows what could have happened.
The only fighter l saw Quarry in the ring with where l felt he had no chance was when he fought Ali.
Two great boxers, They are like fighting there evil twin
This is my first time of seeing this fight. My goodness. They wanted to shatter each other's ribs.
two tough SOBs
real hard left hooks and bodyshots.
the damage these two sustained is unspeakable.
tough hard brawl indeed.
This fight is about as brutal as it gets. Fighting Joe Frazier has been likened to "battling a wild beast in a thicket" and Quarry had the courage to venture into that thicket and battle the beast.
First fight I ever saw on closed circuit TV. I think I paid 6 bucks to see it. Frazier had been pummeling all his previous opponents and Quarry was the first opponent to really hang in there with him and punch it out. Very exciting first round and then Frazier just eventually wore him down.
A brutal fight. Jerry gave it all, and both men took huge shots. Neither fighter would go down, but Jerry unfortunately was cut. It was an awesome bout! Had the fight not been stopped, I believe Jerry would have eventually been knocked out or suffered even more permanent damage. Joe Frazier was relentless in both fights with Jerry. Even George Foreman couldn't put Joe down for the count.
And thats saying something,Foreman hit Joe with shots that would send an ordinary man to the Morgue.Nobody and i mean nobody gets up,Except for Frazier who was up at the count of 4!
@@joshuatree5620 Well said.
@@jp3923 cheers mate,likewise.
Mirror images of each other...nobody backed away...Brutal Ioved Joe Frazier...R.I.P... Jerry Quarry always came 2 fight...the Heavyweight Division at that time sure was tough
NOBODY was going to put Joe down for the count. Nor Jerry. They were True Warriors, unlike the FAKE Warrior Mike Tyson, who took so many 10 counts he has an Honorary Math Degree from Harvard.
The idea for the “Rock em Sock em robots” game, HAD to come from this fight! 😄
Quarry was tough as nails with great chin, he took some devastating shots from Frazier and still kept on fighting. Beast.
Holy Mother of God, WHAT A FIGHT!

What a fight
Joe Frazier was a piece of work! classic fight.
An unbelievable fight. Just pure punching power . Both stood their ground no backing off
Quarry hurt Joe more than a couple of times in the 1st round and couldn't finish him off. Joe could sure take punches in bunches and then just overwhelm his opponent. Must have been frustrating for Jerry to know he just pasted Joe with his best shots and lots of them, to have Joe stay toe to toe and fight as a fresh daisy. George Foreman hurt Joe in the 1st round and didn't let Joe off the hook. George pasted Joe and Joe went down, down goes Frazier......
What you talking about Willis?😊
Both warriors but Joe was another level ❤️
Quarry was messed up really bad at the end of his life. Way too many smashing blows to the head.
jerry later on suffered a form of dementia called punch drunk syndrome. if you youtube JERRY QUARRY AT AWARDS CEREMONY SUFFERING FROM DEMENTIA you can see for yourself not a nice sight.
What happened to him?

Good old fashion bar room brawl. Fans got their money's worth from two legendary warriors 🥊
A couple of true warriors. Nothing but respect.
What a 1st round! This was before my time, but I'd say looking at it now - this is right up there with Hagler vs Hit Man Hearns the 3rd round.
I was just going to write that. The heavyweight version of Hagler-Hearns. Quarry was a warrior and a great boxer but Frazier was unstoppable at that time.
Holy smoke what a war!
This fight is amazing
Jerry fought Joe's fight Quarry was a good boxer but didn't fight to his strengths. By the time Of Quarry Frazier ll Jerry was a spent fighter.
Both of them were eating leather
Great
Frazier was the best at this type of fighting until he met a new type of heavyweight, a super heavyweight that made him look like a lightheavyweight.
You do know Frazier kod Buster Mathis SR who was 6ft4 and 240lbs before Foreman came into the picture right? George Foreman style was based of of Saddler,Johnson and Linston. So wasn't a new style or even a super heavyweight. There was guys bigger than Foreman in the 70s.
@@antoniomosley9410 Mathis was fat, Foreman was cut. Foreman made Joe look like a middleweight. Joe's style was made for Foreman and Joe had lost his desire after beating Ali. Like they say, fighters like Joe, who take punishment to give it, don't last long. Joe said in the Ali 1 post fight interview, that he was very tired, he said "I've been at this for 10 long years", he was admitting he wanted a break. He took a break and never came back with the same desire, except for Ali 3.
@@antoniomosley9410 and, no one hit harder than George when he was at his peak. At that time, George was a big HW.
@@blite13 Mathis slimmed down that's the point. Back in the amateurs Mathis was 296lbs and sticking and moving with the best of them. Foreman wasn't considered big that's is a simple myth he wouldn't even been considered big in previous eras.
@@antoniomosley9410 disagree
Never realized how well Quarry did against Smokin Joe. Quarry had great jaw, but paid the price years later.
This is incredible. Look at these two men NOT hugging. Just swinging. bam bam.
Good stoppage.he was getting hammered.in the 1st four rounds it was give and take, but after that Joes punches began taking there toll and Gerry slowed down a lot.tough fight by both guys though.
What’s amazing is how rarely they clinched even though they were in close quarters for the entirety of the fight.
Proper hard men,what a fight.
Great competitive fight 👏🏻
Jerry quarry was Great 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 🥊 👑
He was, but he was never going to beat Frazier of Ali.
Nobody! Fights like this anymore.
Quarry did have some boxing skills. What he needed was another 3” in height and a little more punching power. Frazier was hit with a lot of punches to the head and body, but he also dished out tremendous punishment and in my opinion wore out Quarry ending the fight after the 7th round.
no body cannot beat joe frazier in his game plan, to defeat him easly 3 thing were enough these are long reach, being tough and having punch power (extremly), forman possessed all of them so frazier has been totally wiped out
This is boxing!
George Foreman ultimately would have killed Frazier in the ring had Frazier continued to get up. Foreman was just getting warmed up. Quarry could have went the distance if not for the cut.
Hardwork
0:07 Frazier almost went down
😅😅😅
Rip to both men . Both men would take heavy shots to get theirs in. There is a heavy price to pay down the road for that strategy.
Unless you’re someone called George Foreman you don’t go to to toe with Joe Frazier.
They don't fight like this anymore. No holding. No wrestling around. No showboating. Just fighting.
Brutality in the ring. These guys gave their lives for us to be entertained. Jerry Quarry died at 53 from brain damage due to boxing. Very sad.
Those guys were built differently. Most boxers today would fold after a couple of those punches.
In my mind this fight is the closest we would ever see to a Marciano vs Frazier fight. An in close brawl.
They pivoted and both put everything into their left hooks. Frazier's had more of an effect than jerry's. Great action fight
Quary needed to be 4” taller and 30 pounds heavier
I saw more action in these four minutes of championship highlights than I have in the last four modern heavyweight championship bouts by these freaking banana slugs. Quarry and Frazier! What cardio, what endurance, what punching volume! LMAO @ Fury and Wilder!
Quarry like Ali just don't stop, unless ref stops it like Ali quarry don't care what state he is in.
Quarry would be heavyweight champ today.
Great punches by Quarry but Frazier keeps coming and coming wearing you down
Jerry Quarry was a tough fighter with an incredible chin. Quarry's main problem was he would cut easily.
All Joe's fights were actions fights
Merry was a Bad man he fight all them Black fighter i love him great man🤩👍
This was when boxers had such better skills and health.
The doctor saved Quarry 's life.....
The real rockum sockum robots!!!
This is a fight! Ali spent too much time hugging and grabbing behind his opponents head.
Looks like rock em sock em robots
When the champ gets in trouble as always the fight is stopped in their favor. Quarry took it to him! More action than an Ali fight like running all over the ring!
Both these guys a tripled hook. Goats. Quarry was Frazier just not as strong and as Athletic and not as big of frame. Quarry had more heart than maybe any fighter ever. The lone small Irishman in the heavyweight division during the greatest time of heavyweight killers from top to bottom; of all time.
I wish Foreman and Quarry would have fought or Shavers and Foreman
They don’t make them like this anymore, these guys define tough! Both would have given Tyson a hard fight.
A GOOD REASON WHY BOH HAD BEGUN TO LOSE THEIR MARBLES BY THE TIME THEY WERE 50 YEARS OLD
Quarry's greatest strength was his granite chin. His greatest weakness was his granite chin. I mean no disrespect, but if he had gone down like most fighters after some of those punches, he wouldn't have died of dementia pugilistica. You could say the same of Ali.
Jerry had skills and a punch.....but woefully lacking in fight IQ. Cosell rooting hard for Quarry, but this was a one sided beat down. Jerry thought going toe to toe with Smokin Joe was a good? plan?
His corner wanted him to box. In his biggest matches he fought the wrong fight.
Jerry was game but smoking Joe could fell a tree
Quarry was a really good fighter, but he was shot by his late 20s because of all these wars.
Quarry would go to war ! With anything….came up just short with the big names
Quarry had the heart of a lion. Took waay too many power shots tho. Waaaay too many
Quarry was a real warrior because he would go toe to toe with anyone as we see here with Joe. Jerry did the same with Ken Norton and others! ..win or lose Jerry put on a real drama show !!
At least quarry could take a beating.
Smoking Joe chopped Jerry q up
Maybe one could knock Quarry out with a baseball bat, but then again, maybe not!
Joe could take a punch as well. The right hand by Quarry at 1:08 to the body and then the head was a thing of beauty.
Joe is a Monster. Quarry very good. That's how boxers fought back then. No dancing around ring.
Tyson would lose to BOTH these fighters! He would quit.
There's ah spy in the house 🏡 hahaha

True, but my idea of boxing is to not only hurt your opponent, but to keep from getting hurt too. Frazier took far too much punishment, even in victory. That’s not my idea of great boxing.
This fight shows how important movement is in boxing. That's what made Ali great.

Quarry was famous because of the guys he lost to
Frazier's left hook is fucking terrifying .
Jerry had a heart and good boxing ,but he was a bleeder
