@SlothyyReads yeah three for me is good but not memorable. Like a trashy romance novel you enjoy in the moment but whose plot will merge into all the other similar trashy romances you read. 1- DNF 2- Bad but was able to finish 3- good enjoyed it or liked it 4-loved it will probably recommend 5- A work of art will recommend to everyone/will probably re-read.
hehe i'm glad it warms your heart! i've definitely considered doing the anti-tbr tag, although i'm not sure if i'm going to do it yet but if i do, it probably won't be for a few months aha
I had to read Girl, Woman, Other for one of my classes last semester and it is a very impactful novel, to say the least. I can imagine this being a very important book for the community, and it definitely was an eye-opener. As a white woman, I don't face the challenges that many women of colour face, and being confronted with these stories was very emotional. I completely agree with you that this novel should be a required read in some way, because young people can learn so much from this. I love your channel, keep up the good work!
the thing i love about you and your channel is that you are trying not only to educate yourself but also your viewers in such humble and impactful way! you seem like a really kind and lovable person to be around. and i'm definietly gonna read books from your recommendations and educate myself more on topics of black culture, racism and homophobia. we all need to spread love and don't let bad people rule this world!
Hello from CA! Just wanted to say thank you for your wonderful intro. I think it's awesome that you're one of the BookTubers who use their platform to shed light on important issues happening right now (whether it be BLM/anti-Asian hate, etc). Love your channel
BOY, THANK GOD YOU'RE BACK! YOU GOT NO IDEA HOW MUCH I'VE MISSED YOU! Thank you for making my day better and brighter! A bookish video idea would be to recommend books based on your favorite k-pop group, like if you're favorite group is let's say...Stray Kids you should read this. I would definitely enjoy it! I love you so much, keep on being absolutely fuckin' perfect.
glad you're back! :) I was wondering if you could maybe make a video about reading fantasy books, like suggestions for people new to genre? I've never really been a fantasy reader but want to try but it's a bit intimidating!
whenever I watch wrap-ups, I always end up pulling up my library app and adding everything to my list! I want to read basically all the books you talked about, and I'm especially excited for Me, My Dad, and the End of the Rainbow
I read the Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series like 10 years ago and was so into them as a teenager 🤣! Especially used to love the characters in Bloodlines, not sure whether I‘d still enjoy them now. I defiitely remember them being super fun and action-packed though 💥. Really appreciate how you always highlight problematic aspects of books, I try to be very conscious of proper representation and empowering or insightful messages within books and only want to support authors that want to use their voice for good! 💜
I'm currently reading "Me, My Dad and the End of the Rainbow" and I'm feeling all those feels. Such a warm narrative and yet I find myself tearing here and there quite often. Absolutely loving it.
Oh yess, I loved when you got passionate over the books! And for video ideas, maybe you should try to read books recommended to your zodiac sign or maybe books that relate to your zodiac sign. It'd be a fun video!
Hi Joel! I read If Cats Disappeared from the World because of you and though I really liked the book and its insights, I recommend that you watch it's movie adaptation also, if you haven't yet. After finishing the book, I immediately watched the film and I'm still bawling. It introduced an element to the story that added more weight to the deal with the devil which for me, made it more emotional compared to the book's exposition (I say that even if I still cried so much from the book haha). Knowing that you enjoyed Aloha's characterization a lot in the book with the hawaiin shirt and everything is a catch tho, because they made him more typical in the movie, so there's that. Thanks again for recommending this story Joel, my day was made
The Book of Pheonix was published first so not sure if it counts as a "sequel" but according to Nnedi comes next chronologically in the same universe and picks up some of the threads from Remote Control. It's so good, would definitely recommend picking it up!!
Enjoyed this wrap up. I just finished Remote Control as well and I loved it, Nnedi Okorafor is such a layered writer, she really knows how to throw colours and textures in the readers face. I also agree that this will definitely be the first in a series of novellas, there's a lot more to unpack. Also read If Cats Disappeared fro the World and found it okay, I think I wanted a lot more from the book but I did love the writing. Very to the point.
Wow! I love the way you review books! Love the new intro & outro! So glad to have you back! Also, do you have any plans for a writing vlog or update? I absolutely love when you do those kinds of videos!
I definitely want to do a new writing update video at some point! I’m probably going to wait until I’m free from the shackles of academia, but then I’ll do a whole update about my current writing plans ☺️
Wait, I’m so glad you read Vampire Academy! I just reread from my middle school days and honestly loved it!! There were some technical issues with the grammar and things, but I was so surprised at how much I still loved it. I’m so happy I’m not the only one that was excited about reading the rest of the series
No one sells me on books I don’t want to read like Joel does! I swear, he picks up the book and I’m like, “Nah I don’t think that’s for me.” But guess what? It was! 💕
If you want to get into Star Wars start with episode IV! I recently watched all of the movies in chronological order and Episode I-III is newer, so the effects and fight scenes are better and it was quite weird to watch the earlier movies after that.
I wanted to say that I love your sweater, very nice. I’ve also seen some other booktubers do a “reading for an hour each day” or “reading 100 pages each day” type challenge. I think it’d be fun to see what you read and how much you read with those (obviously if you want to yk)
Addie Larue and Grown, one of my favourites so far this year.😍 I agree, it took guts for me to finish Grown because what!? And I think I wrapped up both in the same video. I love this!!!
Wow what a STUNNING intro! 😍 I value your opinion so much and am so excited to read some of these that I haven’t gotten to yet (me, my dad and the end of the rainbow, one last stop, and girl, woman, other)! Best of luck on your dissertation- I am working on mine too but for chemistry 🧪 😊
I’m so glad to see a new video from you and I love the new intro!!!🤩 I’ve never heard of if cats disappeared from the world, but I’m really intrigued to pick it up now! Also Me, My Dad and the End of the Rainbow- I love an emotional middle grade😭
I hope you enjoy the Murderbot series! I didn't realize that they were novellas so finding out that the audiobooks were around 3 hours just made my day and I finished like 4 of them in a week💀
The mental health rep in the Bloodlines series by Richelle Mead is honestly the most seen I've ever felt in a ya novel and I wish it was talked about more. Hope you enjoy if you get around to reading it!
Loving the new intro ❤ I need to read Me, my dad and the end of the rainbow, it sounds soooooo good. I love middle grades with strong and powerful messages 😉
video recommendation: trying out Choice of Games! it's a site where there's a bunch of interactive novels available. basically, you have the power to decide what happens next, kind of like bandersnatch but in text form (and you're more in control). every choice you make affects your relationship with others, how chaotic or lawful your character is, the ending itself, etc. it's really interesting and i just wanted to share it! definitely check it out if you can
do you EVER have a BAD DAY????? like oh my lord youre always GLOWING 😭💓😩 also you hit EVERYTHING on addie larue, i agree! I initially gave it 5 stars in the hopes of manifesting a henry, but alas....😀after about two days of thinking about it, i felt like it was more of a 3.5/4 stars?? i agree with the lack of poc, it was odd considering how long she lived and how much she traveled...and poc shouldnt have to act on the expectation of explaining why something could be harmful to them when its always so blatantly obvious 😭 and then also make up for peoples lack of effort to really acknowledge the issue 🥱
Omg Joel thank you so much for posting today I've got my first job interview in my life ever for the first job in my life ever tomorrow and my anxiety is going off the rails this really helped me calm down
@@ivygram716 thank you :) I think it was good. I don't know if I got the job yet I need to go through like a second round of interviews but so far I'm quite happy.
yes!! I liked the invisible life of Addie Larue but felt so weird reading about history and not seeing once mentioned the terrors of wars, injustices, cruelties happened to so many minorities through the centuries. I understand it wasn't the point of the book, but it's clear that Addie's white priviledge allowed her to "enjoy" history without worrying about everything going on and it just felt wrong, somehow.
“Why do I as a black person have to raise the entirety of world history for my point to be valid?” Love this.
Thank you 🥺
I don’t know why people associate a 3/5 rating with “did not like”. 3 is fine, 3 is good. I like 3s. Average doesn’t necessarily mean bad
@SlothyyReads yeah three for me is good but not memorable. You know what that is? Growth.
we love to see it 😌
Joel calling us 'besties' warms my heart
hehe i'm glad it warms your heart! i've definitely considered doing the anti-tbr tag, although i'm not sure if i'm going to do it yet but if i do, it probably won't be for a few months aha
As a graphic designer I very appreciate you giving the cover designers/artists/illustrators a shout out 👏🥰
I love how you always spotlight the illustrators / cover design artists too! Great video 🤗✨📚
It's definitely something I've been trying to do more of!!
Yes!!! As an artists it warms my heart 💕 (and I can also know new artists to follow hehehe)
