    When I just started watching English speaking booktube it was weird for me that people underline the fact that it’s translated, because in Russia, in bookstores for example, approximately 70% of the books are translated and people read more of translated than originally written in Russian

      I'm still weirded out to this day about the exact same thing. I come from a small Eastern European country with very little literature so I think I read about 10 non-translated books in my life.

      I think that's the case for almost every non-English country. I'm from Luxembourg and although we have three national languages (Luxembourgish, German and French), there is just so much translated media, from books to series to movies because a lot of stuff is originally in English. I am always fascinated by how native English speakers don't think about the fact that the rest of the world consumes their stuff either translated or not in their mothertongue :D

    As someone who lives in non-English-speaking country I feel like I have a different perspective on reading translated fiction, because that's such a huge part of the market here and in fact majority of what I read. It's so commonplace here, and I think that English-speaking countries are hugely missing out on literature precisely because they're so much less used to having translated fiction. So it was great to see you make that effort to go out of the English-language-box a little bit (even though my first reaction to the video title was "groundbreaking... 🙄" 😂)

    • @fictionalfates
      @fictionalfates  3 роки тому +16

      It's definitely interesting to consider the differences in the prevalence of translated fiction in an english-speaking country and a non-english-speaking country! I feel like there's so much less of an emphasis on translated fiction here in the UK but I want to try and raise awareness of some awesome books that are translated!

    • @Elselle
      @Elselle 3 роки тому +6

      That's exactly what I was thinking, I often feel like the native English speakers just don't actively think about what it's like to be a non-native speaker in an English-is-the-international-language-world :D

    fantastic vid!! just a suggestion in the future if you are planning on making this a series (I hope you are!) it would be great to name the translator of the book, as you do the cover artist.
    I study languages at uni and as someone who has taken several classes on translation, it is such an art, and every translated work is very very individual and personal to the translator themselves - the same work can be translated by different people an infinite amount of times. One aspect of translation theory (bc I am a nerd and enjoy this stuff) is that we aren’t reading the author’s words from the horse’s mouth, but rather the translator’s interpretation of the author, which can be equally as insightful and unique. So i think would be good to give them that recognition in your videos too, as they are much a part of the book as the author or the illustrator :)
    much love as always 💘thanks for making my entire Friday

    I don’t think I /enjoyed/ Tender is the Flesh, but I respect the hell out of it for how effective it is. The horror is in the banality of the cannibalism and people’s willingness to literally dehumanize others rather than make uncomfortable adjustments their lifestyle. The whole time I kept hoping it would be a story of revolution, but I think the story of complicity and the reversion to the familiar was the better choice.
    I saw you also mentioned Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto, but didn’t end up reading it for the video. I’d love to see what you think when you get the chance to read it.

    • @fictionalfates
      @fictionalfates  3 роки тому

      I'm definitely planning on reading Kitchen in the future! I just didn't have enough time ahah but I definitely agree with your point - whilst we had hope for humanity, the choice that Marcos makes is one that makes the most sense

    Definitely going to check out The Traveling Cat Chronicles because I love cats and miss having one, don't get me wrong I love dogs too, but I miss the purring of a cat as I relax.
    I received last month The Lost Village by Camilla Stern or Sten, a translated work. There are a couple of other books on my wishlist that are translated works. I love books so how could I not read a translated book.
    I don't think I am ready for a book about cannibalism yet, but that book does intrigue me.

    If you haven't yet, you should read translated works by Frederick Backman! His Beartown series is one of my favs. Also, after watching this, I really now want to read The Traveling Cat Chronicles! The other book you recommended in another video about cats, If Cats Disappeared From The World, easily made it to my most memorable reads, I'm sure this one won't disappoint too
