Nice work on the fender. Little trick before you lay the fiberglass, trace the outline edges with a sharpie pen on the tape. It'll transfer to the fiberglass and give you an easy to follow line for trimming the fender out.
I’m going to be a critic and say this isn’t how it’s supposed to be done. Three thin layers is not going to cut it. No gussets or stiffeners. No mounting flanges. You should have made a stiff mold instead and then used mold release, gelcoat, and chopped strand mat and you’d have almost perfect reproductions of the foam overfenders and they’d be strong. I can’t imagine trying to fix what you made enough for a finished product. You were so close!
Never mind a bit of criticism. I added more layers, but never mentioned this in the video unfortunately. There are many adjustments i want to make, these will be much easier when there is a little flex in the shell. I'm always changing my mind when it comes to things like this and i wanted to keep it open to changes. Once i have the final shape i want i can make molds further down the line if i wish.
This bloody amazing and I will be using this same method and posting videos on my channel. Will be doing this on a vw polo breadvan. Thanks so much for the info and what products to use.
Nice. Technic wise I'd say use a bigger bush to get the resin on. Dont be shine with the resin I'd usually soak the first layer because the next layer will soak up the excess resin from the first layer and makes it easier the wet out the next layer. Also wet each layer before moving on. And give every layer a good roller get out as much air as you can and really work the resin through the glass. And the main thing is work fast... Keep it up its looking good.
I love how instead of constantly repeating subscribe there was the subtle message See you soon! keep on the good work, I want to see the build complete!
To nail the other side make an other one using the inside of new one as a mold then cut it into equal 2 inch strips to make a identical templates for the other side. Cut templates out of foam. Use cloth not the mat. only use mat for making molds. I build for the big guys. Add cf to lips, edges and attachment points, use honey comb to prevent flexing, add hidden brackets to keep rigid, if it vibrates, or flexes it will create micro cracks leading to failure.
I'm always surprised people in these videos don't use breathing protection. fibre glass dust would not be too dissimilar to asbestos when breathed in I would imagine and the resin is pretty nasty too. you should be presenting safety first in these videos, not style.
Had a few goes at fibre glass and always fuck it up, did think about foam but seen other videos where it been tried and melted. Ally tape is a blinder. Defo got me in the mood to give it another go.
The UK is very similar dude, most of them are rotted out. fortunately the old lady i got it from really loved it and looked after it. I have done alot of welding regardless, the front wings are valance are actually fibreglass reproductions.
Absolutely true, and then a rubber "rolling pin" roller wheel tho contour / shape, but also to "inject" or push the resin thru matting. This also leaves you with flatter surfaces, less air pockets, etc etc, afterwards.
When UA-cam switched over to notifications i didn't understand quite how it worked For the longest I thought you just hadn't been uploading... Finally caught u in my recent uploads... Looks like I got a year of catching up to do was kinda sad when I thought you'd stopped uploading... Glad u finished the svx though
Well done , i like the way you approached this , great idea i wanted to try out but never got to it. Glad to see it works and very great aswell. Can't wait to see finished product
Looks like when you did the multiple layers of fibreglass at once the middle layers didn’t bond properly is that what we’re seeing when you pulled it off and it’s moving like a floating layer?
1. ALWAYS use a respirator with activated charcoal filters when mixing and/or applying polyester resin. It's toxic stuff - carcinogenic. Some old time glassers have passed on or gone REALLY STRANGE from not using a respirator when they should. 2. NEVER allow fiberglass dust from cutting or sanding to get on bare skin. It will itch so bad you'll want to skin yourself. DAMHIK! 3. Similarly, a t-shirt isn't really enough protection from dust but you can get by for brief periods. 4. Chopped strand mat (CSM) is a lot easier to wet out (laminate) if you brush on a really thick coat of resin first. That way the first layer of CSM will wet from inside and outside. Mix the first brush coat of resin with something to thicken it up, where I live the thickeners usually used are Cabosil, Qcell, or fume silica (all of which require respirator use). 5. The mold is pretty flexible with only 3 layers of CSM, so before you peel it off the car, glass in some stiffeners from strips of wood, or bend some thinwall rigid electrical conduit and glass that in. The resulting stiffness of the mold will make life easier later and your mold won't be flopping around.
Yusss, been hanging out for a vid for ages. Loving the progress. The visions coming along nicely. Also, that last song was awesome! I need to know the song name lol
Thanks for the video! I'm doing similar things now with my s12, and thinking on the mold material - the foam or a this steel of a plastic... I think I will try steel because with such straight lines it can be easier then to manage to straighten the foam of the fender. I will use some of your hints for sure! :)
It’s rare that I find a new video that I get excited and tell all my friends about, but yours made me feel like a little girl. Maybe my A3 will get custom flares in the future? Anyways great video can’t wait to see more.
So so sick man! Fair play for giving this a go, I know ure a bodywork man anyway but building your own body kit is somthing else all together! This is going to look sick when it's done! Are you going to take it to shows when complete? I'd love to see these cars in the flesh!
Thank you so much dude! It's a bit of a mind bender at times, mostly its just a case of taking your time with it. Yeah it'll be at a bunch of shows when it's done!
Nice work! I've got 2 questions: first of all, why fiberglass, and why not carbon-fibre ? the second is an easy one, how can you make it symmetrical ? Im wondering on that all the time, when i want to make a widebody.. ordering a kit is like 3k$, but DIY i cant imagine how i mirror the exact same shape&lines to the other side... Thank you ! :)
GoldhandRenthal Well, I’ve not worked with carbon yet. I’ll probably make the front diffuser and side skirts out of carbon to get a feel for it first. There is a still a possibility of giving the fenders a carbon skin....not 100% yet. I like to make shit up as I go haha. As for symmetry, I cut two of everything...that includes all the supports behind. Also, take a shit load of measurements. It’s a lot easier than you think. Hope that helps dude!

I would suggest do two layers and then take it off the car and use the rest of the layers on the backside feeling in the Benz and the angles where you can stiffen it up make them stronger but I'm watching your show so I'm watching to see how you do it so my suggestion do what you will we'll see how you do it and maybe I might learn a thing or two
How are you going to get the other side to match? I would love to do this to my car but I have OCD and symmetry is very important to me. I love the videos.
Steven Skeens Hey man, i totally get where you’re coming from as I’m very much the same. It’s very simple really. When I made the the foam fender I cut out two of everything. So all the shapes and even the spacers I stuck to the body and their positions. That and taking lots of measurements to double check the curvature of the overfender. Hope that helps dude!

Greg Stoddard That’s a great little trick! Thanks for sharing dude.
Careful with that pen! I've seen it come through 2k primer and light coloured base coats.👍

this is by far the cleanest diy fender. amazing talent man! can't wait for the end result yay
Thanks man! Stoked you like it!
You're a skilled man. Enjoyed watching this. There's car modification and then car modification. This is next level my dude. Smashing it 👌
I’m inspired, and hoping to do some panels for my LDV van. I’m going to start with the sills and wheel arches.
Really nice to see someone who is decent enough to use manner and thank people for support. Great work buddy

@@BuildCreate im truly contemplating on doing this to my celica, but im still not mentally prepared to cut the fenders...
So glad to see some progress on this car
im loving this new layout... When you gonna make the next steps?
I got sand dust at my eye just by watching this video. Currently working for my bike now. Keep the good work
Not going to drag this video on.. just going to tell you how happy I am and how stoked about that I am 6 times in 30 seconds.
Scotty Cool. Criticizing someone for being genuinely pleased with how their project is going 🙄
Awesome build
Awesom videos brother!..very informative!..question, you don’t have to sand the fiberglass between each layer
I've got ah ae92 liftback can't wait to try your method on making a wide body kit for it I'm learning a lot with your videos

Epic...great content man. Best diy fender build I've seen on the tube. I'm watching man don't stop the awesome work. Shout out from S.A🇿🇦
Thanks a lot man. Appreciate you checking out the channel!

It's a real game changer dude, get back on it!
Awesome work! Subscribed as I’m looking to do something like this somewhat soon. Thanks for the quality video.
My pleasure! I hope it helps out with your project!
Love the brats. Sadly you don't see them here in Michigan much anymore. Too much road salt in this area of the states.

what is the name of the specific foam that you are using ?
Awesome work, love your style mate - hell of a lot of good ideas well executed.
Appreciate that alot dude!
I am hanging out to see how you get the other side to come out the same. I could see how you would do it with the other method you used
LDR_ZUVELA it’s super easy dude, I made two of everything in the foam. So each side has identical panels and spacers in ensure it’s exactly the same 😊

@@BuildCreate cheers bro. Yeh i went and checked out his music. Its so good. Real chill vibes
whats the song near the end of the video when you're cutting the fiberglass? Did a great job thanks for all the info!
Wow that was awesome
Instead of silver tape to fill with drywall compound then cover with decking sealer
I cant wait to see how this turns out man. Keep up the hard work. 👌👌👌👌👌
Same dude haha! It's gonna take a while, but it'll be next level......got a few ideas up my sleeve.
Nice work .... one thing when i do glass i use a smaller brush so it takes longer🙄👍
Gary Rosema sometimes you can’t be bothered to go to the shop and a small brush is all you have 🤷🏻♂️
What is tape called
Aluminum foil tape.
Wery Nice work man. Is fiberglass safe to work with it that way when applying?
Clicked on your video thinking it was B is build. Boy am I glad i made that mistake. Love video content. subscribed.
Digg-A- Deez Thanks for checking out the channel dude. Most appreciated!
nice music! whats the name for that silver tape who is the manufacturer?
The tape is aluminium foil tape. Just generic stuff from any hardware store.

hy great job man...may I know how u ensure the other side have the exactly same shape ?
How thick should the final piece be for structural integrity?
What all did you use for the fiberglasss and hardening agent?? Wanting to do this as well, cheers mate
I used isopon fastglas with the supplied hardener.
@@BuildCreate thank you for your response! Starting my fenders this week!
So the aluminum tape you put down then the fiberglass and resin and it pulled off that easy when it was cured?
Yup. Obviously there will be a little bit of resistance, but it will come off.
You can wax the tape first to help as a release.
Happy new year...
Why did you take the mould off before you completed the finish? There was still plenty of tine to completely fuck it up lol
