If you're struggling for grip, heading for the cobbles or just prefer a thicker bar to hold on to, then double wrapping your bar tape is a great way to get that extra comfort. In fact, many pros prefer a double wrap for long days in the saddle.
It's important to have your first layer of bar tape clean, dry and grease-free before you wrap your second layer over the top. Then it's pretty much just a case of wrapping as normal - you can check out the full method here: gcn.eu/1iIaPVu
Alternatively, you can bolster the width on the hoods by using an old inner tube as your first layer and wrapping a single layer of bar tape over the top.

I always double wrap, takes a bit of sensation and feel away but it keeps you going for longer. I do the same on the bike too.
comment of the week!
+stoppsi I was going to comment this!
comment of the week for sure
+stoppsi ya goofed me! too dirty for comment of the week
+stoppsi HAHAHHAHA
The Inner Tube Method really is a good one -- leave the valve sticking out the drops and you can pump your tape up to a comfortable pressure. I personally recommend around 50psi / 3.5 bar.
+Ian Cornish HAHAHAHA
Ian Cornish I do the same with my underwear. Real comfortable😁
Don't figure-8 around the bracket on the first layer of tape, just figure-8 the second layer. It will keep the hoods from feeling thicker than they normally are.
I use a slightly less bulky alternative to double wrapping. I get a length of cushy cork or cheap wrap and apply it lengthwise along the top of the bar (where my palms will rest) and the inside contact points of the drops (similar to the fizik gel pads). Then I wrap my tape around that. It has all the advantages of double wrap, but is significantly less bulky and weighs a lot less than gel pads (also doesn't break down over the course of a ride like gel).
Ooops - better not use WD-40 to degrease your bars - because it is a light lubricant and will saturate the bottom layer of tape with oil. Try rubbing alcohol.
Wow, what a difference double wrap feels!! Just covered up my dirty white wraps with bright new red wraps, really improves the comfort and look of my bike.
You guys got me into cycling before I even had a bike -so thank you !
Also I found that awesome song you guys always use - "Just Can't Get Enough" by The Sea
I really feel that there is a space in the market for making cycling specific electrical tape. I mean if rapha did it, they could whack a pink stripe on it and a Team Sky logo; sell it for £30 a roll. Profit.
+DGXL 80 patent pending !
Perfect timing for this. Doing a 100k Sportive on Friday and looking to re-double-wrap my bars. First time I did a piss-poor job, specifically around the end cap area so your tip re cutting them short will be hugely helpful, thanks.
good video, my fellow viewers already made all the fun comments.
so I will just say I will remember this when I get my roadbike (hopefully in the spring). Test rode one, and hands ached just from rolling around for twenty minutes and I felt every stone in the tarmac. That said my current ride is a hardtail XC bike and I hadn't ridden dropped bars for 25 years!!
It's funny every bike shop video and cycling channel video have you wrapping your tape to the outside, yet every video of a tour team mechanic has them wrapping to the inside on the drops and toward the back on the tops, this method makes more sense. Yes when you are just lightly resting your hands on the bars you might be pushing in the opposite of the wrap but when your on it and pulling on the bars and the tape is under the most stress your will be twisting it tighter and not looser.
Thanks Chaps! Helpful as ever. My tape job won't win any prizes but my bars are now more comfortable.
I double wrapped last week but I will go back and trim the ends for a better fit with the plugs. Thanks.
Hey GCN. You guys should do a video on how to taper your training before a race.
The thing I'm always curious about is why do people wrap their bar tape backwards these days? If you start at the stem and go out, you don't need that extra tape in the center near the stem. Just start towards the center, overlap a tiny bit and wrap to the outside. When you get to the end, cut and tuck the excess into the bar-end and you're done. No extra tape to come undone.
Im curious about that last part, the old inner tube suggestion part... Could you do a video on that too? Thanks :)
I know he loves that stuff and probably marinates his steaks with it, but surely I did not just see Simon Richardson spraying WD-40 on his bartape? :O
Yeah I went back to that part of the video, I was like wtf
It's MucOff, a cleaner. I did the same double take!
Ah nope, it's WD40
Wd40 is a cleaner too... a really good one at that.
While I'm not a WD40 hater ... I would this time absolutely suggest against using it for cleaning the bar tape if you want to wrap another layer on top. WD40 is mineral oil and will work against any glueing effect of the top layer. in fact it is a very good solvent for adhesive residues. Try to clean your bike after you removed a sticker or something you will notice how good WD40 is for that. Instead I'd use something like isopropyl which is a good solvent for water AND mineral oils and very fast evaporating too.
I was shocked when I saw them spay it as a degreaser. Jeeez...
That inner tube tip is the great! Thanks!
I'm sure you could do it by gathering videos from this series, but a comprehensive building a bike from the frame up month of Maintenance Mondays would be awesome.
I used to double-wrap until I discovered Lizardskins DSP 3.2. I found the double wrap was just a bit too thick around the hoods and my pinky finger was at an awkward position. Now my pinky can wrap around the hoods without issue but it's still nice and soft.
There are also gel insets that can be placed under the tape on the tops and the drops where your hands make contact.
I've always been told that once you get to the flat part or top of the bars you need to wrap towards you because when your hands are in this position, you are gripping and rotating the tape in the same direction. By wrapping away from you are loosening the tape over time. Hope that makes sense.
that's exactly the other way round. from inner to the outside
GCN looks good at 60 fps!
what is the model of this fizik bar tape ?
You should have mentioned how you reverse the direction of the wrap after the shifters to make the wind go away from the bike after the shifters. You did the trick at the shifters, but didn’t mention it. The first wrap on my bar tape did not switch the wrap direction and I mistakenly followed suit with my second wrap because you failed to mention it in your video.
I wrap my first layer of bar tape to the brakes only and fix with electrical tape, then run a second layer the full length of the handlebar, as per normal. That way I have double taped drops for a solid grip when pushing on and sprinting and still single taped bars for standard riding/climbing. Genius, huh!
thanks very helpful and noticed you cut the tape at the end in an angle. i will try to replace mine one day soon
WD-40 may have solvents, it still has a light lubricant on it, so you'll need to wash that off also.I'm undecided about double-wrapping, as right now I have double wrapped cork tape, I sort of like the Lizard Skins DSP 3.2mm tape better.
I have monster hands so I always double wrap. A little extra padding is a nice bonus.
Hey GCN, can you guys do a how to video on sunglasses? Would like to ask for solutions for people who are wearing prescription glasses.. like me haha. Thanks guys. Been loving your videos since i first saw them.
why is simon wearing matt's wig?
+unicornseatfruit Truth is, Matt is actually bald and he wears the wig so he won't draw attention to himself.....
omg best comment ever
Prep your old bar tape, make sure it's not greasy, clean with WD40! Right on!
+loone nothing will stick to wd40
+loone soapy sponge and water.
The best videos about bikes on UA-cam. Thanks GCN!
Can I wrap my regular handlebars ,I was thinking of taking off the grips n double wrap them ? 🤔
To make the tape stay in place and make them thick and comfy, I use double sided mounting tape. Then wrap as usual. The wrap never moves and it's very very cush.
I stick a piece of extra / old bar tape onto the bars where my hands generally sit, then wrap the bars with that extra layer of padding underneath. Just as good as an extra layer of bar tape without the weight, or more importantly for a broke guy like me, price penalty. Sure does help.
If Si isn't cleaning his helmet, messing with lubes, or wrapping his hood nice and tight, he's out riding.
In other words, a Hero.
Chapeau.
Anybody remember using 'Benotto' handlebar tape ??It was a plastic type material with a metallic finish ... zero padding but looked nice!!
I remember it being slippery ... also, no adhesive to help keep it in place and a bit of an art making sure you didn't run out before reaching the end of the bars:-D!!
Hi Allard, I just done a quick Google on Benotto tape and this is the stuff I'm talking about:www.velociao.com/2011/benotto-cello-tape/ All the best ... Mags496
+Mags496 I rode an Italia with tape like that back in the '80s. Weird what we could put up with when we were kids.
+William Keys. I don't think we knew any better William:-D!!The only options I can remember were cloth tape or Benotto ... then padded 'Bike Ribbon' appeared late 80's.
remember cateye bar tape? pearl white, flashy green ,etc,80´s style,i had a pearl white Columbus alle frame, with a silver fork, with Fiamme tubular wheels and super record components, with cat eye white bar tape and a sadlle from selle italia( turbo matic 2) pearl white too,and cinelly black stem...i loved that bike!
Had a slug in a bottle before.... But mushrooms under bar tape is a new one!! 😂😂
Si, why do you wrap your bartape in the opposite direction to the Garmin mechanic?
In fact Si is doing the correct direction!
+keasone I know. I always thought Si's way was correct so you don't unwind the tape. I just wondered why a world tour team mechanic would do it the other way.
@2:14 he was going one direction and @2:17 he was magically going the other direction!
The idea is that the direction of the tape should follow the direction/the way your hand rotates on the bar at high effort. IE, when sprinting, your hand rotates outwards on the drop, therefore the tape should go from inside to outside. On the top tho, most people wouldn’t rotate their hand forward, they would rotate backwards... so the direction of top tape should go from front of the bike to back.
Going with the direction of the twist from the hand helps tighten the tape. Go the opposite way and you’re basically pushing the tape back/countering the work you did in pulling the tape right when you were wrapping.
WD 40 again Simon, even for cleaning bar tape?
How long did Simon keep the double wrapped bar tap
Good vid I am not keen on Fizik tape though esp the suede stuff, lasted about 3 minutes...
gcn can you do a video about how to check if your bike is OK after a crash
Too much of a liability I would imagine. Just take it to a shop.
it is already here. just search.
Make sure your rear derailleur is still straight and that the hanger hasn't cracked (which it's designed to do) if your bike fell on the right side. A good shop should be able to give it a once over without really charging you I don't think.
Bro cleans grease with WD40 oil. 🤦🏻♀️ smh.
I double up the tops only to the hoods. Avoid the bulk around the hoods and I don't spend a huge amount of time in the drops.
Need video on how to weave or interlace bar tape to be super fancy. helppp
How do you make Handlebar Tape of different colors? Like the drops blue, rest black, how do you even join them?
you need to buy a double coloured bar tape www.evanscycles.com/products/lizard-skins/dsp-25mm-dual-colour-bar-tape-ec106075?country=GB¤cy=GBP&esvt=1042-GOUKE304462&esvq=&esvadt=999999-0-33816-1&esvcrea=61233697496&esvplace=&esvd=m&esvaid=50080&gclid=CjwKEAjw1f6vBRC7tLqO_aih5WISJAAE0CYwk4ESaEnhNgJUhklAdcM-PRv4O5mZAhVi0-QtD6zbyhoCk6nw_wcB
+Christian Ortega you can get dual colored specific tape (lizardskins) or just wrap one colour just passed the hoods, cut and tape and then start the next colour on the top of the hoods. I did it once where they overlapped so each colour kept the other in place so I didn't need tape at the transition area but taping the bottom layer works fine. The top layer will be held down by just wrapping over it once and then finish as usual. It can be difficult to get a good transition on the hood cover area but with some practice and patience there's nothing that looks better imo. I had white tops and red drops on my red/white frame and it was stunning. Just changed to lizardskins dsp 3.2 though and I think it'll be hard to go back to something thinner.
That outer fizik tape is nice, what is it?
Excellent video very helpful. Thank you
I have been wating for this
Thanks for the good tips!
Whats the name of the first layer of bartape that is on his bike ?
use AIR CONDITIONER insulation foam.
works perfectly.
Great method.
Do people go for white bar tape just because it looks good or is there another reason, its almost impossible to keep it clean.
+ThatWolffe purely cosmetic. I do tend to use white because of this reason, although there is also the benefit of when it's old it looking mucky encourages you to change it more than black tape.
Ryan Morrison Oh right o.o, my tape is all torn up on the left side from where I was pushed off the road by a van driver and hit a curb at a bad angle...... cant even afford new bar tape right now due to being currently unemployed
+ThatWolffe I believe its due to the legacy of Eddy Merckx and his long use of white handlebar tape, I may be wrong here, but it is damn sexy. I quote a Velominatus here; "White is a glorious color to grace a set of handlebars. It emphasizes the sensual sweep of the drops and the beautiful curve from the hoods to the tops. It brings out the crisp shadows of the cables running beneath the tape to highlight a perfect wrap. It stands as a testament to the care that is undertaken in maintaining the machine, for without meticulous attention white does not stay white for long. It states that these bars are graced not by the sullied hands of a domestique, but by the clean grip of a leader."
Harry Brown ohhh o.o
+Harry Brown poetry my friend... but my bike is red and black so red I go. but it still looks dingy. half credit to me?
You cut the tape the wrong direction at the end didn't you? 2:38
I'm so cack-handed I would mummify myself in bar tap in about 10 seconds flat! Good job I ride and hand bike! :-P
what model of fizik tape was used on the second wrap? link?
Would love to see how to double wrap like a pro those bars must get a lot of action ;), Oh and I mean bar tape too would be interesting to see that too.
I suffer from numb hands, has anyone with a similar affliction tried the double wrap and found it really makes a difference ?
+tobortine It might be you have to check your position on your bike so you can relax your arms and don't lean on your hands too much.
If I dont have that second layer, usually gel tape for cushion, I cant hold onto the bars that well due to big hands. And without the second layer my hands do get numb because Im having to grip harder so it wont slip and my hands dont have that full grip of the handlebars. Also I use bike gloves with gel pads to get rid of numbing and shocks.
+tobortine Thank you, appreciate the feedback. I think I might give it a try, I have nothing to lose.
+tobortine I was skeptical the first time and it made a world of difference once I got that layer on. Imma try gel inserts soon for more cushion because Imma a big guy.
did Simon use to be a shop mech?
does he spray WD-40 on the bar tapes? that's news to me.
Uh-oh. It seems Simon wrapped his bar tape the correct way, making Dan and Geoff in the other videos look less pro.
Jason Brim i
Do you still wear gloves if you've double wrapped the handlebars?
+Joe Pickering I would just in case my hand(s) got acquainted with the tarmac. ;)
Looks like Simon gets a great deal out of WD40... I wonder what other uses has he found for it...
GCN, these screen links do not work.
So why is it when I go to double wrap my new tape isn’t long enough 🤬
Why double wrap when you can buy Pro extra comfort/thick bar tape?
I have a foam pad underneath my bar tape.
Simon, I'm pretty sure you cut the bar tape wrongly at the end. *cringe*
Not only cut wrong . From minute 2.15 also the wrong direction of taping i think.
He cut it right
+robleake nah mate. Watch all the bar taping video it will show you the opposite cut.
+Nepo35 Whatever it should be the side closest to the stem, I thought it was this??
+Nepo35 He definitely cut it right! I just checked. He doesn't have much angle on the wrap so looks wrong. Watch arts cyclery vid on this that's one of the best...
Wow Si You really like to raise you're eyebrows
Hmmm..Dan Lloyd? Or Jeff brown..? Dan Lloyd!
never need extra comfort on the road, but on a turbo trainer, 15 mins in and my hands are aching. why?
+Lane Williams Most likely, because there is nearly no movement in your hands. On the road you steer, brake etc. so your hands are in constant motion. Also your Bike might not be perfectly level, so your hands may carry more weight than they should.
+Lane Williams +1 tobbydick256 and I guess there is less resistance on a turbo trainer so you might be baring more weight on your hands, not sure though since I don't have one.
Aryan Adibmehr
Yes you are right I think. When riding on the road you are (probably absolutely physicaly incorrect) constantly ''falling forward''
tobbydick256 I actually meant the opposite, that you are ''falling forward'' more on the trainer than on the road. Keep in mind this is assuming the trainer has less resistance than the road so you'll be supporting less of your upper body weight by your legs, how true it is I don't know. Have you ever noticed if you're riding around really slowly your hand feel a bit loaded? hence supporting less body weight with your legs.
I have a CycleOps which came with two blocks to prop the front wheel up if one so desired. Two blocks = slight uphill feel, one block = level, and no blocks = slight downhill, because your back wheel is lifted up off the ground a bit. I always use one block for this exact reason, all my weight was going onto my hands and they would ache. Also with a trainer, assuming your bike is locked in position, you should be able to easily sit up and just pedal and give your arms a rest. I do this all the time. This would probably be impossible/dangerous on those trainers where your bike is freely riding against floor rollers.
It must be great to be able to get out of bed and make a GCN video... #BedHead
More "How to" videos please!
Great idea 👍🏿
Thanks
Or double wrap inner tube!
Neat, I like it
Hey cheif, your wrapping the bars backwards! Watch the suggested video called how to change bar tape like a pro mechanic at the end of this video to see how to do it right. Or ask Dan, he does it right in his vid.
That hair!!!
i think he wrapped the flats in the wrong direction
Always triple bag it. You never know what STDs lurks. Oops wrong thread.
🌻
Simon did it all wrong. The pros don't double wrap like that, so why did he? He should have consulted one of his "pro" counterparts! You wrap the opposite way on a double wrap.......I bet even Neal knows that! And where's "The Boss" when you need him........with his spot on test team know how! ;-D
Or.. You can always get a more fat model tape..
Si, sponsored by WD 40....
Am Ende falsch abgeschnitten!!!🙈🤣
top comment!
I don't trust Dan.
