Ah, sweet Simone...yet another awesome Dutch soprano, and Epica is just incredible. Interestingly, Mark Jansen was in After Forever when Floor Jansen (no relation) was in the band way back in the day, before he left and started Epica. And speaking of Floor, when you get back, check out the live vid of Sancta Terra from the Retrospective show that features Floor...you won't be disappointed. The two of them (great friends in real life) are spectacular together.
Their name is a tribute to the same titled album by Kamelot (US). Progressive power metal with symphonic elements. You could try their song named Liar Liar. Epica has a bunch of great songs like Design Your Universe, Kingdom of Heaven, The Obsessive Devotion, The Divine Conspiracy, Sancta Terra, Resign to Surrender.
Epica! I saw them live last year. This song was the best conclusion to the evening. We were in a smaller venue and I was sitting for the show (pregnant belly demanded it) and it was soooo awesome! The people were on fire, there was a mosh pit (?) that took like half the venue, lol. It was too much fun. The band, also, was soo good, and I loved the interaction they had with us and with each other, and Coen and Isaac (the keyboardist and guitar player) were doing their usual antics for the whole show, and it was fun to see Coen move with his keyboard. The only thing was that we didn't get to see a whole lot of Arjen, who was hidden by his drums, and Simone's microphone was a bit low, but it was really the best concert ever, with PowerWolf doing a great job energizing the crowd just before Epica came to perform...
This is great stuff buddy. Like your reaction and the discovery you are making. Have fun and get into all these greats and surprising bands in sympho metal. 😲
Have fun on your vacation! About this band. Mark Jansen and FloorJansen (no relation) were in a band together calle Forever After. Simone and Floor are best friends. Floor was a featured singer on one of their songs Sancta Terra. Her and Simone together are awesome. Floor is also Dutch.
God Mark is my favorite in all their older songs. Now he doesn't have as many. He always added a profound message to their music, was deeper than what we found as her beauty. Epica is powerful music.
This is great "classic" Epica ... Even this live version shows how much better they've become as a band from back then; And as composers / songwriters, their last two full lengths & EP of original material (Solace System) have been fantastic. Hard to pick favorites off them, but: Second Stone, The Essence Of Silence, Natural Corruption, Edge Of The Blade, Universal Death Squad, Beyond The Matrix, Dancing In A Hurricane, The Holographic Principle - A Profound Understanding Of Reality, The Solace System, and Immortal Melancholy (a full acoustic ballad) would be my suggestions. Cheers!
This dutch band with also a dutch lead singer simone simons is great, but you also have to listen to 1 of the most beautiful duet ever, by also 2 dutch metal singers by sharon den adel and anneke van giersbergen with the metropole orchestra.
Great reaction man, new subscriber here ! Epica is just an fantastic band !! Simone vocals in contrast with Mark grows are so well done, besides the rest of the composition of course, classical music fits so well with metal. They're very funny people too. I would like to suggest two songs by them, the first one is The Essence of Silence (official live), it's my favorite by them, it's a song that has the best elements of Epica. And the second one is In All Conscience, Simone's vocals are just fantastic on this one and the lyrics are really cool too
kreshBACON thanks for subbing dude, glad to have you on board! I’m loving discovering more and new music, both suggestions and through random ‘surfing’ from discovered bands. I’ll be back on Sunday so look out more videos over the weekend and into next week. Cheers, Jim :)
I saw epica at rock city Nottingham a couple of weeks back and they were mind blowing. You tube does not do them justice. This particular track is one of their heaviest and less melodic and they play this and the end of the encore. In general their songs are more melodic and less heavy. Try storm the sorrow or edge of the blade(official videos). I’m a massive Nightwish fan too but I find they are very different apart from the fact they are both symphonic metal but their style is not the same. Thanks for the vid. More Nightwish and Epica please.
I've been watching your videos today and I've already left a suggestion in one of them and now I fell like living another. Iced Earth is the band and Dante's Inferno is the song, from their Live in Athens album. I think you will love this. Thank you, I love your reactions
Thought you'd enjoy it, Jim! The name Epica is appropriate, no? I saw them live last year with my son and they were great. Another good live vid is Kingdom of Heaven if you're interested. Hope you have fun hiking in Austria. I used to live in Germany so that was one of my favorite things to do in Bavaria.
Awwww, cheers Xenophon, I'm here now. The view of the mountains is amazing. It's really warm too. Going for a run along the river in the morning so likely to suffer.... It's been a while! Really, thanks so much for this suggestion, it was epic in so many ways!
Hi Jim, just stumbled across this vid. I have to say, what an incredible warm, full and gorgeous speaking voice you have. If you already don't you should do something with that. Yes, I also wholeheartedly approve of Epica :)
Epica are amazing, and I see you've already discovered Floor Jansen of Nightwish - Please check out and react to Floor's first band, 'After Forever' playing 'Dreamflight' in Progpower USA VIII (2007) - see what this metal goddess can REALLY do :)
Have a nice vacation! Epica is pretty cool, although I haven't listened to many of their songs. Something I have to do! When you get back, could you react to a band called Avantasia? They are a rock/metal opera project so all their songs are part of a bigger story (although most of them can be enjoyed alone). The guy in charge of it, Tobias Sammet, always voices the protagonist and invites many many guest singers to voice the other characters. The end result is really cool in my opinion, with a lot of variety because of the different singers. I think a good song to start with is the official live DVD version of "The Scarecrow" because it's spectacular. Here's a link to the video ua-cam.com/video/LTyxnUZMA1k/v-deo.html The two singers in this song are Tobias Sammet (the protagonist, referred to as the Scarecrow) and Jorn Lande (Mephistopheles the demon). Whether the demon literally appears or is a figment of the protagonist's mind or is a metaphor is up to individual interpretation. Very interesting, and very exciting to watch! I hope you enjoy it just as much as I do!
Hi Jim Liked your reaction video. If you want to listen to something different from them you might be intrested in listening to "Once upon a nightmare" . The song itself is based upon an old horrific Nordic fairytale transformed to a Poem by Wolfgang von Goethe (basically the German Shakespeare) called The Erlking (Der Erlkönig) . The musical buildup is like the soundtrack of a movie with of sense forboding of the tragedy about to happen. The story is about a father racing through the night to get help for his sick son. That, in his fever-state, is having visions of a gobling king trying to seduce him to enter the land of the dead. No growling in this song and Simone just sounds devine. The tragic conclusion makes this a piece of art. If you are not having goosebumps by the end of the song i would consult a doctor.. :) Beneath you will find the original version and literal English translation of the poem mentioned. But here the link. ua-cam.com/video/CPgZmfD5E8Q/v-deo.html Erlkönig (Goethe 1749 - 1832 ) Wer reitet so spät durch Nacht und Wind? React to "Epica - Sancta Terra (feat Floor Jansen) Live Retrospect show" ua-cam.com/video/cx22Yuj2nzg/v-deo.html It's a great duet of Simone and Floor, accompanied by a real orchestra, performing one of Epica's songs.
thanks so much for posting metal videos of this band of nighwish with Tarja . here in US such music is largely ignored. Always loved their blending of heavy base with her angelic voice, even if the growling in the live performane is a bit much. they remind me so much of rhapsody of fire (minus the distortions) in their epic harmonious style and chorus support.
Hi. We are a unique and underground progressive melodic death metal band from Finland. I’m just asking are you willing to do a reaction -, review - etc. of our stuff? We launched our Future Diary debut album recently. Let me hear your thoughts? 🔥
Please do a reaction video to Epica - Sancta Terra (feat Floor Jansen) Live Retrospect show. make sure you use this video ua-cam.com/video/cx22Yuj2nzg/v-deo.html and not the one “ titled Epica & Floor Jansen - Sancta Terra Live HD “ because that one is just an overdub of the album version.
I could never really get into Epica but the lead singer Simone Simons is a Goddess.
Ah, sweet Simone...yet another awesome Dutch soprano, and Epica is just incredible.

The two of them (great friends in real life) are spectacular together.
This performance is one of the best moments in all the Symphonic Metal history, is just fantastic
F YES to Sancta Terra.
madDdog 67 Never liked Marks growls... Just so flat and... Nah. This would be perfect song and performance without those.
Simone can sing ... and she's rather attractive which doesn't hurt either! :)
If Floor is the the Queen of Metal, then Simone is surely the red-haired Siren (Greek mythology) of Metal!
Enjoy your trip!!! When you come back you can check them playing live with a symphonic orchestra, the song is called Design your Universe

Ultimate performance, this is a supergroup - the world hasn't seen in
decades. fronted by one of the greatest and angelic vocalists ever
I was in this mosh pit. What a night. I try to see Epica at least once a year.
This is great stuff buddy. Like your reaction and the discovery you are making. Have fun and get into all these greats and surprising bands in sympho metal. 😲
React to Epica: the essence of silence. Saludos desde México.
Epica - Kingdom of Heaven and The Essence of Silence please :)
Epica my Favorite Band and the best band in my opinion on the symphonic metal scene. Saw them live twice.

Thanks I do that all the time. I usually check it . I am glad you caught it. ;-)
God Mark is my favorite in all their older songs. Now he doesn't have as many. He always added a profound message to their music, was deeper than what we found as her beauty. Epica is powerful music.
Yep their lyrics sure pack punch most of the time.

"I'll see you guys on the other side" is basically the deal with any good metal song. :)

Great reaction. Shame you never reacted to any other Epica performance ever again... Perhaps you didn't find them so 'epic' after all...

Epica music is sooo damn pretentious, but they do it so well. Not my cup of tea, but the Design Your Universe album was insane!
