I fully agree Jim, especially on the presentation, artwork. I'm a professional artist and have painted a few album covers for UK rock band 'Cats in Space'. Very proud of the album art which needs to be seen at gatefold size. You'll see their albums on the web, with my work.
Yes, CTTE year of issue vinyl does reveal more detail on vinyl than the cd. I was amazed.
Additionally, you actually gain the full recorded experience, many prog albums with a single side of continuous music have momentary gaps where the digital track location sequencing resides, listening to streams or even CD's sometimes drives me mad when the music drops out momentarily. We don't have this on records.

Because it is REALLY heavy and it convinces you never to move again.
I'm 59 years old and i grew up with Vinyl Abums and 45 singles.
Those Records inspired me to become a musician, a Songwriter, a perfomer, a composer and an artist.
It also made me want to dance.
Music is such a profound language for everyone to share and be together until the music's over.
What a gift that has been given to humankind.
So ethereal, and yet so movingly powerful.

Profound, unmeasurable, ethereal, magic.... music is truly the greatest gift to the world.
I think with certain genres of music, the crackles and pops actually add to the music. Certain blues and jazz, and slow melancholy songs. It just adds to the atmosphere of the music, imho.
I still have my vinyl, 8 track and CD collection as well as buying used copies of albums that I did not have and now do. I listen to between 5-10 albums per week. I also listen to streaming music at the gym and sometimes in the car. I bought many of these recordings new in the 70’s though today and listening to them takes me back to a time and place. Rock on Jim!!

I love records- a ritual that began 50+ years ago. And at least on my system, most of my older records sound better and are easier on my ears. Digital became painful at the volume I like to listen at. Just got a beat up Tyrannosaurus Rex…glorious with all the pops and clicks.
Well said Jim! Apart for being addicted to music, I like to call my collection of vinyls and cd's for that matter, my library. In stead of books all over the walls, I've got music. Also there's some gems up there that would come in handy on a rainy day 😊

I agree with lots of what you say, Jim., and I do collect vinyl too (and I have lots of CDs), but for me that is no argument against streaming. I do stream music as well, simply because of the new music it helps me find. Most new stuff I have discovered over the last 5-6 years (and much of it I now own on vinyl!) I came across because the logarithm (either on a streaming service or youtube) suggested it to me. Despite the massive amount of music available now it has never been easier to discover new music.... thanks to streaming! It's not either...or. You can do both!

I agree totally with you considering owning music in a physical form like a record. I want to hold it in my hands. Don’t talk about collecting things😂. Because of lack of storage room, I changed to collecting things digitally, like books, certain magazines but I still buy, mostly second hand, books. And where to store all the jigsaw puzzles I get from friends😅. It’s very difficult to give those away again.
I stopped with vinyl the moment cd’s were affordable. For me, better quality sound (back then at least), less vulnerable to scratches etc. and they use a lot less room to store. I do miss the big sleeves with artwork though.
I prefer to buy, if I have the money for it, cd’s. If cd’s are not available, I buy a digital copy that I can download.
And I sometimes listen to Spotify or download music to listen if it’s worth to buy it.
But all the music I listen to is on a NAS-harddisk and in the cloud. The cd’s I bought are converted by iTunes for the cloud. I prefer to not to change the side of the record after about 25 minutes or change the cd. I make a playlist on my iPad for that moment and drown myself into music for a certain time.
I do miss the time indeed when I was with a few friends listening to our newly bought records and have a nice beer. We dud that almost on a weekly basis.
Later we listened to our new cd’s 😅

Agree with almost every word said here though I do tend to buy CDs rather than vinyl these days (cost and not having to turn it over!) Great what you said about the 'stories' with every record you own. I've got (literally) thousands of 'em. My original copy of 'A Nice Pair' has a skip on 'Astronomy Domine' where the distorted voice-under gets stuck on (what sounds like) 'Far, far below' necessitating a slight push on the cartridge and that's how I think the record should sound. Wouldn't have it any other way.

I have a handful of this and that remaining, but I donated my classical collection to a local community college circa 1980, and stupidly sold many of the prog and rock albums for change on the dollar. 25c. 50c. 75c and some maybe even a whole dollar. When music and books went digital, hard books and albums became art. With global demand being what it is, you are sitting on a treasure ship. Insure the lot.
Fingers crossed David! They will one day top up my pension, or go towards a nursing home for this old codger!
Regarding vinyl, during the late 70’s and early 80’s vinyl quality got really bad. Many of the new records I bought were virtually unplayable. Besides surface noise the albums were never flat discs. They were so warped you would watch the arm going up and down like the surf. Sometimes you were amazed when it didn’t skip. There were very many times that I had to return an album several times before I got one that played all the way through. So when CD came around I was very receptive and immediately replaced most of my records with CDs.
That said the demise of album art is very sad. So hard to even imagine albums like Lark’s Tongues in Aspic or Dark Side of the Moon without their iconic album covers.
Regarding ownership, I agree 100%. These days I discover a lot of new music via UA-cam. A lot of artists post live performances that don’t appear on any other format and I find it upsetting that the video might get taken down and I will no longer have access. I would point out though that for most official albums it is possible to purchase a digital copy which I do for music that I consider indispensable.
Thanks for the video. I see Steven Wilson has a new album coming out next year. Hope you once again get the chance to get a special listening and also I hope you attend one of his shows and review it! For me, in the end, there is nothing quite like a live performance.
I'm not sure I'd get another opportunity to hear his record, but if he invites me, I'll be there in a flash!
I have a middle ground. I own all my music physically. I rip it. I put it away and never touch it again. The convenience of a digital collection is just too good.
And I still listen to albums only. I just prefer the possibilities it gives me.
The most important albums are visible in my room, because they mean a lot to me.
But collecting music also connects people. I have fond memories of me and my friend taking turns in chosing the next track to listen to from our CD shelves. Sometimes just to listen to it, but sometimes also to play a game who recognizes the artist first.
Ps: I bought faaar too many CDs/Vinyls. I spent decades of my life in music only. Actually I sometimes regret that. In the last few years I have normalized my shopping behavior to a few special ones per year. Back then it could be 20 albums a month. It was not healthy. So yeah, collecting music can be an addiction.
P.P.s. I hate clicks and pops. I hated it in the 80s and I still hate it. The first thing I did when an album was vinyl only was to use the bandcamp code to get flacs :)
I am hoping to get a better record cleaner because less clicks and pops are obviously a good thing, but overall, as long as they don't overshadow the music, I'm perfectly fine with them!
Ha! So true. Less is more. I wasted so much time scrolling on my music streaming apps looking for something good to listen to. I have over 450 vinyl records and 500 cds I've collected since I was a kid and I'm glad I still have them. Sadly, I got rid of many records 35 years ago when I bought my first cd player. I'm not sure about the argument vinyl records sound better than cds. You sure as hell need an expensive setup in order to get records sound their best (good turntable, good cartridge, good synergy between your components, clean records and good pressings...). With that being said, streamed music and music on a cd will never have the soul a vinyl record has. On this I'll say streaming for discovering music and vinyl for listening to music! Cheers!

Ive probably listened to the same 100 albums as opposed to most people listening to a 1000 albums.
Pick the best and stick to them. IMHO
I have my favourites of course, but always open to discovering something new. Hence the channel!

I'm getting to be the age of it's too late to have a big collection.

I don't really notice the noise and pops after a minute or two. I sure as hell notice it a lot less than some of the crappy digital alterations made to a lot of modern music.
It's part of the character of the record!
