      @@Meatle. the songs of the beatles have very much variation and they always experimented with different instruments, but their songs weren't really hard if you look at the chords they used, those were very basic. They were also in the same genre a lot. Queen did a way better job of going into other keys and had very much variation in musical genres, but they would have the same instruments most of the time; guitar, bass, drums and ocassionaly a piano or synth. So both bands were really great at different elements of music.

    • @terrifair2076
      @terrifair2076 4 роки тому +13

      Yes, it was the perfect moment. Robert Plant was singing Inuendo at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert and he hadn't learned all the lyrics to Inuendo, so he threw in some Kashmir lyrics to make up for it - and they were amazing - way better than the lyrics he was trying to read off the paper on the floor. LOL Thanks for reminding me of that. 🙃 I'd been listening to so much Queen n I'd never heard Kashmir, so I looked it up. What a great (and heavy) song!

    March of the Black Queen is the original Bohemian Rhapsody! Ok I'm totally not neutral but I will say the whole "Queen II" album is the most underrated Queen album of all time. And especially the second side which is the "Freddie side" which works for me like a single piece especially the succession of Ogre Battle > The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke > Nevermore which is mind-blowing when you think it has been done in 1974 with limited time in studio and no computer... It's one of the craziest (in a good way) harmonic and melodic thing I've ever heard. And each time I hear it (first time I was13 I'm 42 now) I still wonder : How did they achieve such perfection? Because each time I listen to this record, I discover something new...

    I highly suggest going in depth on “The Prophets Song.” It’s Brian May’s Bohemian Rhapsody and it’s unfortunate that it gets lost in the shuffle compared to Queen’s more popular songs. It’s amazing that for any other group Prophets Song would be their magnum opus, but Queen has like 20 more to come!

    • @Schmidtelpunkt
      @Schmidtelpunkt 5 років тому +20

      Not really - Bohemian Rhapsody's oper section is playful and shapeshifting. The Prophet's Song just repeats the same gimmick for a way too long time, to the degree that the guitars crashing in feel like a relief, unlike BR which makes one want revisit the a cappella part over and over again.

    • @GeauxWyatt
      @GeauxWyatt 5 років тому +54

      Herr Schmidt I’m not saying Prophets Song is totally on the level of BR. I’m just saying it’s one of Brian’s most interesting creations which i believe is underrated in the grand scheme of Queen’s discography. And I personally think Freddie’s echoing harmonies are quite haunting and beautiful rather than a gimmick. But that’s just my personal opinion

      Innuendo is easily1 of queens worst songs. Amazing craftsman ship and lyrical/ sonic prowess aside. In the grander scheme of queens career and being a good song to throw on, the song fails miserably. The song sports a lot of great ideas all held back by 1 thing... the original idea was terrible. To make a song like that... clouded in synths that would soon sound dated and to have it build around more circus sounding music instead of operatic... these were some of its downfalls. The song just sounds like a giant mess whereas bohemian sounds like everything perfectly falls together. Bohemian was built off of an amazing idea... to bring the opera to rock and roll, make a multi part song (something only played around with by bands like the Beatles and yes and king crimson.... but never really used in a more pop oriented in your face way) that was worthy of its parts, to make a triumphant stage worthy tragedy unfold in front of the audiences eyes... bohemian was built on all of these amazing ideas while innuendo was built on nothing "let's rip off led zeppelin, let's try and repeat the succsess of bohemian rhapsody ect. Ect.

    It's interesting to hear Pop/Rock songs being broken down like this, so much more interesting than the "reviews" you see in Newspapers etc. which rarely deal with musical content.
    I'm a particular fan of "Now I'm Here" which, for me, showed a band approaching the peak of what they were to capable of.
    Unusual key changes, canon/imitation, unusual structure, given that there's no actual chorus and a savvy nod to Chuck Berry, both in the guitar solos and the cheeky "go, go, go, little Queeny!" near the end.....I never tire of listening to it! ;O)

      It's important to remember that Mr. Taylor and Mr. May taking lead vocals on Queen songs wasn't unheard of on the 70s Queen albums. I miss that a little on the later albums. The circumstances on Made In Heaven were tragic, and that Mr. Mercury's health deteiorated so much that he couldn't finish his own song is hard to hear. However, if he hadn't been the sole vocalist for such a long time, then perhaps there would have been more stomach within the band to create more Queen albums after he passed away...

    What I'd like to see, is a series of videos that focus on groups of Queen songs that are distinct and stand out from their other songs, but have a lot in common with each other.
    For example, one video could deal with their epics: March of the Black Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Millionaire's Waltz and Innuendo.
    Another would be their music hall extravaganzas: Bring Back that Leroy Brown, Seaside Rendez-vous, Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, Good Old-fashioned Lover Boy, etc.
    And then a third could be about their underrated songs: It's Late, Need Your Loving Tonight, Rock It (Hand Jive) and any other number of lost classics (of which there are many).
    How about it? Get to work!

At first listen, I could tell something wasn't quite right in Queen's world; It also evoked a lot of strong emotions for me as I was in a bad marriage. It never stopped me from listening to the album, as there were so many amazing elements. The way that Queen used the music studio as an instrument was so amazing. Not many recordings had this level of fidelity or innovation. This inspired me to try to be a better musician and recordist. May starts, which then allows the song to take it up one notch by allowing Mercury to take over. Afterwards May just has single lines, which gives a nuance to the song and in a way anchors Mercury to keep him from getting too theatrical.
      May's voice is very much in tune, but unlike his guitar, it does not add character. Even a worse voice (and mine is certainly worse) would have more edge. '39 must be the most skippable song on A Night At The Opera. But, well, fanboys... if you liked music more than a specific band, it would open up whole worlds to you.

  • @StuartGarlick
    @StuartGarlick 5 років тому +6

    I love this song, and I have loved Queen ever since I was a child. I feel like one reason why it seems to pale in comparison with Bohemian Rhapsody, or even Led Zeppelin's Kashmir (which the opening and closing verses are reminiscent of), is that when Queen began, they were sonic innovators. In 1990/91, when Innuendo was recorded, technology allowed (imo) bands inspired by Queen like Guns n' Roses to perform similar magic in production, along with lots of other groups. Even Def Leppard, who weren't in the same league as Queen in any way, could, thanks to Mutt Lange, claim Hysteria was a chunky, satisfyingly aggressive rock album, with Queen-style harmonies to the fore. In other words, the progress of studio technology had flattened the playing field.
    The other is that Bohemian Rhapsody took a very personal Mercury lyric (he may or may not have been channelling a persona or character when writing - it's unlikely he was literally writing about his own life) and built around it, whereas Innuendo started with the musical excellence of May, Taylor and Deacon, and added lyrics later. The result is a song that tries to come across as universal, but does not hit home as hard as the gut-wrenching lyrics of BR - at least until the final verse, which is undoubtedly Freddie singing about his own wish to live only for the moment, as that was all he had.
    I find Innuendo the album a hard listen - I don't think it's not as rounded an album experience as The Miracle or A Kind of Magic, probably in great part due to the almost unbearably sad circumstances the band were working through. There is also the subtext of knowing, listening to Freddie's voice - as on-the-button as it always is - that one of your heroes is recording this knowing he is about to die. That, alone, makes the album a real lump-in-the-throat listen, unlike The Who's Who Are You album, for example, where they played knowing Keith Moon was making himself very ill, but unaware of exactly what would happen, and so there is more joy, and less foreboding, in the sound.

    • @Kowasi
      @Kowasi 5 років тому +3

      Sure, every verse might as well be loaded with death. Headlong, I Can't Live With You. I got the impression that Mr. Mercury was singing love songs to the virus itself, and it was hard to shake.

Realizing for the first time, that I could sing. Also, that it was something that not everyone can do. Being a wheelchair user from birth, provided an unintended shock factor for people. It was also a profound lesson in the power of imagery, & the boxes society / people, put you in. Based on that image. I suppose that is one of the reasons I loved them so much. The musicianship was insane, & they never let themselves be put ( musically speaking ) in a box. It is a motto I have lived by. Boxes are for purchases, not people, or art.

    I think innuendo is indeed one of their very best songs but whenever I listen any of the songs from the album, my heart bounches so hard and I sweat and freeze a little and breathe manually. I don't listen the songs often, only because of this unpleasand feeling I get from them. I really wanna be able to relax and not think about the fact that they're kinda "dark" or sad songs or whatever and that they were recorded in 1991. I just want to be able to forget that while listening. I know this might be weird what I'm all saying here but innuendo is this kind of song that really really has a message in it, and a true meaning. It's a "heavy" song for me. And no not in the way you probably think, but the lyrics are heavy. They explain the hard truth of this world and for some reason, I get that feeling that i mentioned earlier. Idk if im the only one... I probably am but I really do think its a great album no one talks about but idk... makes me feel kinda sad and missing Freddie even more i guess

    Yeah, Innuendo (the song) was at the time it was released often spoken of as the spiritual successor of Bohemian Rhapsody. Personally I think there's another song that also operatic in nature but it's a lesser known song and it actually predates Bohemian Rhapsody. The song is March of the Black Queen from the album Queen II, I always consider that song the spiritual predecessor of Bohemian Rhapsody.
