If only that reviewer knew that the synth was made by the original dr who music composer. I'd say it sounds more akin to a dalek completing a system check or reboot,
Rest in peace, Mr. Donaldson. Kind of eerie that I was re-watching this episode, and wanted to see when he stopped working for the BBC, only to find out he died today.
Peter Donaldson has the calm, disciplined voice one needs to hear in times of crisis. I'd really like his voice narrating my life in my head. Edited to add: I know we were taught to hate on Wikipedia in school, but it's not the enemy! It's a wealth of resources on a subject matter, and a great place to start researching. If I could only access one website for the rest of my life, it would be Wikipedia.
On the one hand I never thought I'd live to see the day where we have to fear nuclear war AGAIN. On the other hand, damn, these shorts are entertaining, in a grim yet kitschy sort of way.
A couple nitpickings:- The SMPTE color bars are only used in NTSC countries (read: most of North America, Japan, and South Korea, among others). The UK uses PAL like most of the world and thus use such test cards as Test Card F or the Phillips PM-whatever pattern.- It's BBC Radio 4, not BBC 4 (which is a digital TV channel).- Signing off is referred to as "closing down." That's it for now. Carry on.
Quite right!! It's Radio 4. Actually pre late 1960s it would have been under the old name "The BBC Home Service". BTW did you know that in the early days of the WTBS they actually had entertainment programs on to keep the peoples minds off what was actually going on outside.. "Round the Horne" was one of the programs that was listed for use in the WTBS, however the entertainment part was shelved to allow for more news and information to be broadcast.
Something is jacked up about that cat. "Meowmeowmremomeaorw" "Charlie says I should tell mummy where I'm going." NO HE DIDN'T! HE'S DYING!! SEND HIM TI THE HOSPITAL!! HOLY HELL!!! 10:21 Turn of the gas, **fart** and the electrecity in the mains. In your home, *not* at the power plant.
It's worth saying two things. One, the advice given in Protect and Survive was later revealed, in the late '90s, to be totally useless. Secondly, doing the robot dance like the guy at 4:15 DEFINITELY wouldn't help.
For anyone wondering: the video got flagged in July for reasons still unknown. Nothing has been changed between this posting and the original--I was confused enough to check Benny boy's Twitter to see if he explained it. That said, this is one of my favorite episodes. Glad it won't be going away any time soon.
+Grimmb0mb The Russians complained, because this would allow people to prepare for the nuclear attack. The Russians can't win a nuclear war if the Brits are hiding behind pillowcases full of sand.
My great grandkids' school had a shelter in the basement of the school hall. There was canned food, and the school held regular drills to get all the students into the shelter. The school was across the street from Midway Airport. I expect it would have been a target. It's doubtful the kids would have survived a nuclear explosion a mile or less from the school.
Our school had one under the sports hall, it wasnt for the kids though, it was a command and control bunker for the mayor, police chief etc. Would have been funny watching the bunkers occupants trying to keep 1500+ kids from smashing their way in if the siren (also on top of the school building) went off. We were about 5 miles from an airbase so would probably be screwed anyway, shelter or not. Infact I recall having to plot the blast/heat/fallout radii for various yields detonated where the (cnd loving) teachers thought most likely Soviet targets on an o.s map, so each kid could see how fucked they were at school or at their house. Spoiler: No mater where I was, I would have died horribly, so great job there teachers. Showing us `threads` didnt help either.
Did you know they play the shorts on a loop in the imperial war museum in Salford, Manchester England, Earth also Micheal Crawford as Frank Spencer from Some Mothers Do Ave Em on the box "The Cat did a woopsy in my barre" Classic
+kargaroc386 They'd have had days if not weeks to prepare for an attack. It's highly unlikely the Russians would have attacked out of the blue without some sort of political / diplomatic build up.
kargaroc386 This video is quite scary. I remember back in the 70's being old enough to understand that I could die in a nuclear war at any moment but not old enough to understand the politics and why this was highly unlikely. Looking back I also realise that in various directions I lived 7 miles from the centre of one of the UK's biggest cities, 3 miles from it's airport and 3 miles from a private airport attached to a factory that built military aircraft. Basically I'd have been dead 3 times over if war had broken out. Which is a happy thought...
I just watched this while wearing headphones for the first time and noticed the "I think my face is on fire.... I think my face is on fire... :(" i havent laughed so hard in a really long time oh my god
Never in a million years would I have thought that Charlie Says and PROTECT AND SURVIVE were made by the same production company (production company? Animation studio? Whatever it is)
+JRushPixel I used to believe that, however to avoid any potential copyright issues the band instead found the voice actor from the videos and had him read from a slightly revised script. Great single from an under appreciated LP.
I seen some of them on the Charley Says DVD avilaible in the UK from Network, If you can get you hands on it it will work on USA DVD players as the DVD is Region 0
+Dr. Gun If I were them, I'd have leading missiles that shout a message "It's OK to come out now". That way people would come out from behind their doors and suitcases full of sand to become viable targets for nuclear weapons.
I don't find these protect and serve shorts to be any more frightening than watching Run Hide Fight instructional videos these days featuring young school children. I guess I have a morbid fascination with such calm instructions for situations in which unrehearsed panic can be deadly. No locked door is really going to protect you against someone with a gun who wants in, especially if the kids are all on the floor lined up against a wall. Seeing a kindergarten teacher explain in a way that won't frighten four year olds that someone could walk into the school with a high powered automatic weapon for no reason so they have to sit in their superhero cave silently is quite unsettling to watch.
7:12 - Threads is the grimmest movie I have ever watched in my life, It is fucking horrific. The movie isn't bad it's just that the subject matter and it's portrayal is extremely unsettling.
Considering what happened to the UK during WW1 and WW2, in hindsight I *GET* why they jumped into this idea without consideration for the public's response. The UK had already went through hell twice and the idea of nuclear weapons being launched to the island may have scared the absolute crap out of the higher ups who acttually went through both wars and they didn't want to get caught with their pants down AGAIN in case warfar brought much more powerful weapons to the table. However, the tone, the general structure of this is completly ill made and filled with so much misinformation that it's clear that it would have done worse towards those who followed it than protect them. The intentions of this whole thing comes from a place of genuine fear, concern and a want to not repeat tragedies of the past towards people who may not have been able to handle another attack on the country but it wa so badly made I don't fault people getting angry when it was released to the public. It more or less strips everyone of any sort of ability to live outside the government mandated emeregency plan and outside the instructions on what to do 'for yourself' there really is no indication what else the goverment is going to do to, you know, actually F'in help and how to contact them. You're seriously left on your own and this is a horrible thing to sell to the public as something......GOOD. The only 'good' to come from this are the parodies, the use of UK stop-motion animation which is always a charm, and the music.....and your nightmare inducing British accent. XD
+collegeman1988 Good god, don't you realize how important this is? If a nuclear bomb goes off near your home you have to shut off your stove or it might start a fire.
Lol. Never mind that all combustible material in the neighborhood where you live such as the grass, trees, shrubs, bushes, cars, houses, et cetera will be on fire after the nuclear bomb detonates.
Hilariously, in an Amazon review of the P&S DVD, one reviewer describes the closing synth jingle as sounding "like a Dalek being tortured"! 😂
If only that reviewer knew that the synth was made by the original dr who music composer. I'd say it sounds more akin to a dalek completing a system check or reboot,
Charly says always tell your mummy before you go play in nuclear fallout!
Charly says Keep away from the tall, angry green men and the blokes in scrap metal armor. You'll live longer.
when i heard the fart at "turn off the gas" i laughed so hard i nearly sharted.
jolly good show old boy!
+Glitter Jugend I had to listen to that about...oh...several thousand times...giggling like the five-year-old that my wife accuses me of being.
That sound at the end of the PSA makes me feel like an episode of Regular Show is about to start.
I read "1984" in 1984(My senior year of high school).
smittykins coincidence?
Rest in peace, Mr. Donaldson. Kind of eerie that I was re-watching this episode, and wanted to see when he stopped working for the BBC, only to find out he died today.
9:03 "...we couldn't just STAY HOME."
Well that aged well with the recent pandemic...
4:19 Good fricking grief, I'm getting some MAJOR South Park vibes from this. The animation in this is pretty much the ancestor of South Park.
These shorts should be in a mod for the Fallout games.

maybe they'll be in fallout london

The way "Protect And Survive" wraps around the family reminds me of metal-bending equipment sometimes seen on "How It's Made."
The synth at the ending of the videos sounds like something the Devil himself would play on his synthesizer.
It's worth saying two things. One, the advice given in Protect and Survive was later revealed, in the late '90s, to be totally useless.

+Pichi Brando Possibly that Orchard Music Company deciding to bully UA-camrs for no reason but to cause misery is the cause of this flagging incident.
+Grimmb0mb The Russians complained, because this would allow people to prepare for the nuclear attack. The Russians can't win a nuclear war if the Brits are hiding behind pillowcases full of sand.
The credits mention a closing song that doesn’t seem to be playing - maybe he removed it?
Is it weird I was more freaked out by Charlie’s meowing than Protect and Survive?
Charlie staring at the viewer is more terrifying. especially with his uncanny valley paper face.
