please don't stop making videos like this. I realize this is not some clickbait video that will generate a lot of ad revenue... but this is why I love this channel. A very thoughtful look at photography by a very passionate photographer. this is gold.
Fun fact, about the 200 views of Mt. Fuji, the concept of taking a singular concept and running with it over and over is kind of a thing here in Japan. Back in the Edo period, Ukiyo e artists such as Utagawa Hiroshige made 53 Stations (views) of Tokaido. The same artist in 1856-1858, famously made woodblock prints of 100 views (technically 119 prints) of Edo(later Tokyo) landmarks. I think he was planning to make more before he died in 1858. Hokusai made the famous 36 Views of Mt. Fuji woodblock prints, (the most famous of which being the Tsunami wave and Mt. Fuji print), and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi made 100 Views of the Moon (100 woodblock prints featuring the moon somewhere depicting scenes of Japanese antiquity). My Grandpa, who was a kimono maker after the WW2, even attempted to make a series of kimono prints that depicts a good luck drum as well. I think I can wholeheartedly say that Hiroshi Masuko based his 200 Views of Mt. Fuji off of this concept of collaging multiple art prints together from that timely artistic tradition here in Japan :). I suppose photos and the sets of it can be culturally influenced by historical art as well haha. Interesting video by the way! Always loved your content.
Always love your commentary on other peoples' work dude. Shows a lot of maturity to take genuine interest in projects that aren't your own and spotlight them with the same level of care as your own work. Lucky to call you a friend amigo!
Woah, John Humble. Thanks for the introduction. I can definitely see the inspiration in your own work. Wonderful collection of images. Nice to see the variety of style. Cheers to the new year, my man 🍻
Such a lovely collection Willem, thanks for sharing. I've actually been following Hiroshi for quite some time already and always loved the playful angles he finds to include mount Fuji in photographs that don't seem to be of mount Fuji. It was a pleasant surprise to see that you also appreciate his work :)
I must say, you have a great set of books Willem....every one was a distinct style, but they seemed to make up a singular theme... excellence understated. You get cool points for your selections!!!!
One of my favorite things to do is go through Flickr and go through people's favorite photos. I've always thought about making a sort of book out of those images for my own personal pleasure.
I've always described my work as a juxtaposition between old structures and new... so John Humble's work is an extremely pleasant surprise. Thanks for the intro and inspo
Spent the entire year looking for inspiration and I’ve finally started to find some towards the end of this year. Hoping that translate’s into the new year. Thanks for always being a source of inspiration, Willem! 🖤
Willem, THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEOS!!I enjoyed this one particularly, learned some new names! There’s nothing like a good photography book that you can hold in your hands on a snowy overcast day while sitting by the fireplace - just like we have today in Canada 🇨🇦 😂 Wishing you new inspiration in New Year 2023!
As an LA native and photographer based here, John Humble's work is incredible. LA is a really unique and beautiful place even with its problems, and it is awesome to see a photographer explore that so well.
Thanks Willem for sharing. At Holdinghands Studio, we have been creating photo books as a form of fundraise for charity. Hit a mental road block for the next photo book and your sharing had provided some inspirations for us. Glad to find your channel. Keep shinning and sharing ✌️🙏
The mount fuji book reminded me that Hokusay did something similar with paintings in XVII century: the 36 views of mount fuji. The great wave is part of that series too!
Thank you Willem! I could not help but get a copy of Noah Waldeck's book. It resonates with me a lot as I just recently finished a personal photobook about similar subjects. Looking forward to the additional inspiration from this one!
Just made my first hardcover photobook, unfortunately I can’t send you a copy because it’s already sold out but I will in future maybe for the next book or the reprint of my first one! I had a lot of inspiration watching your video, and this is what I needed! Thanks, Alessandro
Did my first photo book for family of my deceased father's best photographs. Kind of hooked now. Working on a a personal project book but also thinking of doing a zine or two. I have watched a lot of videos and looked at a lot of books from my personal collection but still tough to decide how best to lay them out and order the images. Guess it is a very personal creative decision and there is no right and wrong
Love the 200 Views of Mt Fuji! If you like that you should check out 100 views of Mt Fuji by Hokusai from the mid 1800s! Probably had some influence on the photo book as well
Hi Willem, That is a lovely selection of gems, much appreciated for the new findings. Would it be possible for me to send a copy of my photo book to you and if so how might I do that? Best wishes for the new year, Eric.
Thank you for sharing these amazing projects with us!! I'd like to see more videos like this in the future because it's a great way to discover unique photography that I might have missed otherwise :)) On the subject of books, I'm not sure if you'll see this, but I ordered your book when it first came out and somehow never received it. Now that it's no longer available in your store, I'm not sure who to contact to find out what to do. I was overjoyed to have it, and I've been looking forward to seeing your pictures on paper for a long time, so if you could assist me in any way, I'd be extremely thankful! Besides, thank you for all of your videos this year; I've really enjoyed watching them all and hope to see more of them in 2023!! :))
man this video is nearly a year old and I"m only now learning about that "200 views of mount fuji" book. I thought I had an original idea lol Sounds like its based off the work of hokusai "36 views of mount fuji"
Excellent video. I greatly enjoy seeing the photo books of others. Your choice of examples was right on. Well done. One suggestion: it would have perhaps been worthwhile to put “photobook” somewhere in the title, as I almost passed on clicking here…. And would have missed such a worthwhile experience. Cheers.
Thank you! I think intentionally not including it makes it more approachable to new photographers and a much larger group of people who maybe not already be familiar with photo books as a form of enjoying/consuming photography.
I definitely look at a much wider variety of work than what is shown in the video, but ultimately it’s people and friends close to me who inspire me most.
Honey wake up Willem posted

So happy to hear that dude ❤️
It's always nice to have a few photography books that you can look at time and time again!
Hah, crazy, we all have a photo in the same book - you, Arnaud, and me. Happy holidays and an even more successful 2023, Willem. Hope to see you soon!
Woah, John Humble. Thanks for the introduction. I can definitely see the inspiration in your own work.
Wonderful collection of images. Nice to see the variety of style. Cheers to the new year, my man 🍻
So happy to hear it Bryan! Looking forward to your videos in 2023!
we're very lucky to have photography
never been this early to an upload. I can tell this is going to be a good day
roman’s project is top tier. great choice pal
The 200 views of Mount Fuji was inspired by Hokusai's 36 views of Mount Fuji. The famous Great Wave print is one of them.
It’s an amazing project. It achieves a whole new purpose being photographic and so thorough
Wow, a throughback to the first videos I watched that you made! A beautiful collection. 🙏

Happy New Year from over the pond, looking forward to whatever you get up to in 23!
Thank you! Happy new year 🎈
My brother got me "Modern Color" by Fred Herzog, it's my first photography book and it's just fascinating. Can't wait to add to my collection
Modern Color was my first photography book too! If you like it, I recommend checking out "The Suffering of Light" by Alex Webb.
A 2023 version of this video would be amazing
Such a wonderful collection! Thanks for introducing me to these beautiful works by some amazing artists. I'm surely going to get a few of these books.

Willem, I think you would really enjoy Midwest Materials by Julie Blackmon. Their work was one of my greatest discoveries this year.
Thank you for the recommendation! Excited to check it out
This is a dream of mine! Amazing video man, it’s wonderful sharing the love and appreciation of other artists❤️🙏🏼

love your work. Salutations from Colombia!
you should do a shoot in Belgium or the Netherlands again! Could be a really cool project.
No one does it quite like Willem

@@WillemVerb How about: “Photography Projects and Photobooks that….” 😜

Are you adult (over 18 years) or child at current moment?
@@user-jy9rq8nj7q What is weird?

Try saying documentation instead of document.
