    Finding a publisher is nearly impossible unless you have a huge social media following. A publisher only cares about one thing and one thing alone: finding the quickest, safest and fastest route to profitability. The subject matter or image quality doesn't matter, only what will make them money. On top of that there's no shortage of excellent photographers wanting to publish a photo book and what publishers choose to publish is highly, highly subjective. The chances of getting your photo book published are about the same as winning a high dollar lottery.
    Thankfully there are some very good options for self-publishing. If you're successful there finding a publisher for your next book will be much easier. When you publish you get to see your work in a new form and light. Someday adding it to the Internet Archive will allow it to live forever.

    • @seantuck
      @seantuck  4 роки тому +23

      I agree Brian. It is very tough. I don't blame publishers though. They are a business, and I don't think many of them are brilliant at marketing, so a lot of them want you to come to them with your own audience to sell to, which they may be able to extend, but I don't think most publishers would be capable of building an audience for you from scratch, no matter how much they believe in your work. Of course they are looking for work which sells so they can cover costs, and make a profit to keep the lights on. I think as photographers we need to get honest with ourselves and own that it's actually our job to build an audience around our work, whether on dreaded Social Media, or in the real world. It's definitely true that once we have that following, then a publisher will be more enthusiastic about working with us because at least there are some guarenteed sales and less risk for them. Otherwise, as you say, self publishing is a great option, and you take home all the profit... but of course you still need to build your own following in this case too. No one can do that for us.

    • @benjaminthorpe7990

      The artistic story is as much in the photographer as it is in the images. They need the profitability, but they want the whole package

    Sean, thank you for supporting Joshua K. Jackson’s work. Not only are you supporting the work of another excellent photographer but Josh, is a gold mine of insight. He says “Just start. ... the work will give you the answers.” He also says “It was more about balance, harmony, and flow.” Jackson’s perspective may sound simplistic but it’s not. Rather it reveals an entire aesthetic path on how to go about being an image maker. Finally I note this video reveals an essential kindness that you bring to this very demanding work of producing one or two videos each month. Yet you share the spotlight with another. Nobody is twisting your arm to do this yet you do.
    Thank you for your hard and kind work.

    After many years of being told I should make a book of my street photography, a compilation of sorts I suppose, with some sense of logical assembly ? I finally began the arduous journey of making one, during these Covid times. I have published four this year. Themes on reflections and double exposures, city peaks and skies, and a general book of candid public photography, sort of a selection from the best of. Now I've got the burn and in the middle of self-publishing a series - city after dark theme. The first turned out well. I have enough in the archives to produce three books in the series. All black and white. Now currently editing and sequencing the second book. Like a film strip with one frame narratives sequenced methodically. Aside from all that... as a personal legacy vanity project (harshly put), but more so to have hard tangible books of my work on the shelf that says I was here, this is what I saw... it's just nice to see my photos in book form. I love gifting them out. For sale too online if people choose to purchase, however driving revenue is not exactly my first motivation. I've got plenty of photobook ideas in mind. The art of making a photobook (self-publishing in my case), is a challenging complex creative endeavour. Yet I'm finding some joy in the process. It's cathartic for me, a rediscovery of myself as a creative, where I am, where I'm going, where I was - especially as I look back over a couple of decades worth of images. It's very personal. Timely video, well done as always, Sean. Solid perspective on this photographer's book making journey. Many many great takeaways here and food for thought. Helpful, philosophical yet logical and realist truths being spoken.. Joshua K. Jackson makes great photography. As do you.

    Sean, excellent video! Blown away by Josh's second image, here, of the woman n man in the window. I've not seen it before.
    As my brother is a contract publisher (and I've been a cover designer) I have to agree and reiterate just how important it is for the content maker to "let go" of his attachment to the project, a bit, and take the advice of the publisher. That's not always going to be the case, but it's true most of the time... they have the experience and they want a success just as much as the photographer/author does. Cheers!

Personal projects are very rewarding for one's own engagement with the development of your craft, as well as learning about the community or environment you are focusing on. It's a win win situation as a photographer. Balancing making money and pursuing your project dreams can be a tough one to crack. Well done Johsua.

    What a wonderful video! It has been very inspiring for me as I'm working on several long term projects, two of which I really would like to get some public attention. Mainly because I have something to say with those. Joshua mentioned you have to really think about what you want the end result of the project to be. That snapped it into focus for me, at least for one project: I want to make an exhibition first, then see if I can expand the attention from there. Publishing might be step 3 or 4 after that. Well, now I have the beginnings of a plan: time to take pictures again!

    Sean, you are doing great work helping Joshua become more popular with your channel. I have an advice for the next book of Joshua. I saw the blank pages of his book and in my opinion it will be better if he adds a short story of the photo on the left page and keep the printed image on the right page. This will help the audience understand what he thinks, feels about the photo before taking it.
