bump into your review and found it to given me even more info than majority of reviews on Dell XPS 9720. I purchased from Dell Outlet but still a super machine, the AUDIO is fantastic - even will be heard over my window unit a/c when it is on full blast (and audio level does not have to go over 80%). Thanks again for such a detailed review.
Excellent review as always Andrew. Agree about the webcam, no oled option, no upgradable WiFi and would like a better GPU and pen support for the touch screen version. I look forward to your next review as always. Many Thanks. P. Hamilton 🇬🇧
UPDATE: sound cutting out is a bluetooth issue. No audio problems when I switch from Yamaha external bluetooth speaker to Dell's internal speakers. This Yahama has worked flawlessly with all other devices, so something's going on with the Dell. Original comment: I just received my Dell XPS 17 9720 yesterday. Couldn't even find the power button until checking the thing they call documentation - a fold-out graphic on 5"x11" piece of paper, ha. Thanks for the graphic on the hdmi adaptor -- I thought they'd forgotten to include a usb-c adaptor cable - didn't see it was a pull-out attached to the hdmi unit. My eyesight is not good enough to see even this 17" screen from any distance, so an HDMI connection is critical. So far, for $3K (Costco, and on sale for $300 off) I'm underimpressed. 4 usb-c ports is not enough ports if you want a wired mouse, wired keyboard, external file storage for sensitive files, hdmi to a 4K tv display, and let's not forget the POWER has to plug into one of those 4 usb-c ports. There is also no ethernet port, so that means yet another adaptor for usb-c to ethernet I will have to buy. I live in between the city and the country. Internet is less than great here; only one provider - Century Link. They are a crap internet provider who never updates their leased modems, so wireless is not reliable; I usually hook up to ethernet. This dell's keyboard is offset to the right enough that I constantly find my fingers hitting the wrong keys - I read a Costco review of someone having the same problem. I can probably adjust over time, but since there is no numeric keyboard, I would need an external keyboard anyway. Since I prefer wireless keyboard/trackball anyway, that solves two of the usb-c shortage issues. Still coming up with usb-c dongles out the wazoo, and already at full capacity, even when I install wireless keyboard/mouse. Bottom line, I feel Dell is cutting out a wide swath of users by the assumptions they've made. Currently having audio cut-out issues with streaming - it might be the wireless modem issue, or it might be something internal to this laptop. Previous laptops have not done this. PROS: it is very fast. Which is what I wanted. You might gather by all my usb-c complaints, that I am not a patient computer user. (But extremely patient with rescue dogs needing an understanding foster Mom, and with wanton women who've finally left ill-advised marriage, needing a place to rest and figure out the rest of their life.) Bottom line: It's better than the Lenovo Legion $1800 gaming laptop that I returned to Costco - lots of h/w issues with that one, but so far, still in the market for a better option. Really, my 10-year old ASUS gaming laptop was about perfect for business and general use, until it died a slow miserable death. And I wasn't forced to run Windows 11 on it. I may finally become an Apple customer. Thank you Costco for your 90 returns policy on computers.
The 9720 has a better image and sound ! Excellent camera image and sound. A video call would be flawless in such a laptop. Excellent video as usual.... THANKS FOR PAYING ATTENTION TO THE KEYBOARD ! Keep up the excellent work and may God bless you always ! Oh ! The sound in the Macbook was stronger and louder.....
Finally got mine, a fully loaded, after a month of waiting and after a ton of windows-driver updates and even a BIOS and firmware updates. I love it, the build quality, screen is so rich and beautiful , use the Dell PremierColor to change whatever color profile I desire. Only 3 days of use
could you please advise where you can get access to all of these updates, I am thinking of getting one of these laptops but don't know how to update drivers etc. Thanks
@@Octopac1 they are all available on Dell's website under the support page, using the dell warranty number ...or model or a automatic scan to determine your model, and you will find lots drivers and now my third bios, new Wi-Fi Bluetooth...and GPU drivers.
from one of using the you laptop how was the performance of it, i manage to buy one so i want to about the heat is it a problem in the xps 17 2022 model ??
Absolutely impeccable review Andrew! Once again, you have truly outdone yourself with this thorough video!! On another note, slight improvement in the webcam quality in that the color volume seems to be better than the one from last year, but being that it's still a 720p webcam, the picture is rather soft and not very sharp unfortunately. The quality of the built in mic is fair. 👏😁
Nice pricey unit. Camera is a little better than last year's and microphones substantially better than last year. No muffled sound. These manufacturers should offer two iterations of this PC one with a full size numpad and one without to satisfy both camps of users. For the price they charge this should be doable. My guess why they reduced the wattage of the 3060 card is to avoid any net power drain when plugged especially when running the 4k model. Remember that even with the 135 watt power adapter you still have the power limitation when powering thru a USB-C port. Still overall seems to be a quality product. Another excellent review as always. Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you for this amazing review Andrew! This made me make an order to to the specs to my liking which I 've ordered with Intel i9, Windows 11 Pro, 6 GB Video Card, 64 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD and 17" UHD+ LCD. I can't wait to get it delivered and I would upload my review video later on. I guess, Dell should thank to you. Cheers!!
The 1080p webcam is not desirable: - Uses more battery - Doesn't improve picture quality significantly - More streaming bandwidth - Slightly more cost Instead, looks like they improved the refresh rate and image quality
Thanks for the review Andrew, you are finely going through it, I would say everybody can assess it based on you review. Generally XPS line-up are a piece of genius from Dell along with its sibling Precision, I'm using both XPS 9700 and Precision 5760 in my daily engineering tasks, they run an outstanding workflow of my heavy (Autodesk Autocad Civil 3D and Autodesk Revit) projects seamlessly.
Great comment, would you recommend the 9700 over the 9720? I intend to use for engineering tasks as well. AutoCAD, Plant 3D, MEP. Your feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.
How is your Wi-Fi on this machine? I've heard the Killer Wi-Fi card can get slow at times. Is your Wi-Fi fast/normal? Also, what ping/latency are you getting for cloud gaming like Gforce Now? If it's decent I'll probably just get this laptop.
I ended up buying a XPS 17 with 12 gen i5 1255H, with 512 SSD .. I wasn't abought to pay Dells full price of about 1,900 so i went to their refurb sight and found mine @ 1,100 which seem good...And 5 days after i bought mine i see they raised the price to about 1,300... Ive been using it for a week and all is good but im still trying to get use the the cramped keyboard.. I have no issue with no number pad on the right , but the key board is something that will take time to get use to . BUT at the price point of NEW i figure dell should give us a full size key board like every other brand. . Im a basic user so i guess i could of saved a few more bucks and buy a lower price unit , but at 1,100 and full year warranty just like new was a good deal. ... I will be updating the SSD in the future like after warranty is up, as i would like bigger than 512, and i also see this has a lower grade performing SSD IN IT FROM DELL. The SSD in mine is a Micron 3400 which is a lower performing SSD
What an amazing review!!! I was wondering if I could purchase the upcoming Samsung 990 pro SSD and install it in this laptop since it's Gen 4, now I know I can!!!!
Hello Have you seen the new HP ENVY Laptop 16t-h000 it can be customized to match the specification of XPS 17 at a much cheaper price of 1779 dollars What is your opinion on that? Can you compare them?
How does the anti reflective coating compare to a standard glossy screen v a matte screen. I'm used to matte screens (especially IT in work), have always placed a matte screen over a glossy screen when happened to buy one, but moving forward, I want a screen with the max colour range for photo editing. Should I stick with FHD matte or will the UHD with anti reflection be suitable? Any comparisons ?
Thanks for the great review of XPS 17 9720. I just ordered one. I don't use web cam's I think they invade privacy. I use black tape and cover it up. What is up with the C type USB Ports?
Great review Andrew, you touched on some really important points. This laptop, I owned the 11th gen, is getting a little long in the teeth. I remember upgrading the SSD with two PCIe Gen4x4 but the 15 inch is actually a better deal, in my opinion. Unbelievable that they still shove a 720p in this expensive machine. This review is spot on!! Thanks, as usual for your approach and honest review.
As always, great review. My biggest concern is the battery life. I work from home, but go mobile a bunch of the time. I do web based work, online research, streaming stocks lists/charts, many chrome tabs open at once flipping between them, other windows open at the same time too, lots of youtube videos (research and occasional movies for a break or an evening), some emailing and chatting. I do no heavy demand uses like video or music editing or gaming. Would like to get the 4k UHD screen, but tempted to get the FHD screen for extended battery life. Am wondering with my web based uses, long hours 7 days a week online, but no video or music editing or gaming, how many hours I might be able to get? Also, with the long hours though still just web based stuff, will it tend to get to the hotter, throttle down point for me, or more likely to stay cooler for me? Please, would welcome input.
Thanks! As I mentioned in the video, I got a little over 7 hours but it will all depend on your use, how bright you go with the display etc. The FHD+ should give you about 2 more hours.
Always appreciate your reviews. And I love, love this 17"er in a 15" form factor. I am currently trying to decide if I should get this now older 9720 with the i7 for $2k, or cough up $3k for the new 13th gen i7 9730 version. I'd welcome any thoughts on that. A question, there's no webcam shutter here, but is there a way to turn off the webcam inside the computer, software I suppose, so that it is in effect as good as closing a webcam shutter in terms of no risk of being spied upon and such?
Excellent review as always. I'm always fascinated by the Precision version of these, especially the thicker models (I traded up from an XPS 15 to a much beefier Precision 7750). Any chance of getting a big boy Precision 7750/7760/7770 review?
I genuinely hope XPS would also offer all AMD config with Ryzen PRO 7/9 and RX 6x00S, or maybe even without dGPU but with 6850H or 6950H 45W CPU with 680M iGPU, about 4tflops with iGPU is bangin', without dGPU it can boost higher due to power and temp/cooling, on Zen as well as RDNA cores and sustain higher for much longer, which would be breeze for XPS cooling solution already existing, which is really very very good. dGPU option for me would be combo with Ryzen 7 PRO 6850HS 35W with Radeon RX 6800S @ 75W +/- 5W, or maybe even Ryzen 6850U @ 25W and Radeon RX 6600S @ full 80W. Probably would be good news for battery life too...
Had to put off my purchase, so came back to watch this. Any thoughts on how the XPS 9730 with the i7 might compare, might improve over this 9720? Would love your thoughts. It just came out. I can save some money going the 9720 now, but I will pay more if there is good reason to go with the 9730 at this point. Among other things I'm wondering if the battery life might have improved with these new gen 13 chips. Thanks. And keep up the great work. Your reviews are always top notch.
I have XPS 9570 which is out of warranty (max 4 years). I need to upgrade to latest XPS. Which one is better XPS 9520 or XPS 9720 (price is not issue) but I want 2 SSDs (9570 can only have one with 97Wh battery which is must for me). I use it for Visual C++ development.
Very interesting. one question, in the 10 minutes Premiere Pro export, was it the same project you used for the XPS 9520? because I noticed you got 8:49 with the 9720, but 8:23 with the 9520...was the 9520 really faster than the 9720 in premiere? if that is so, I dont see any case to buy the 17". am I mis-interpreting the results?
I've had a problem with mine, the problem is a buzzing sound coming from the right speaker when someone is speaking like in Zoom or from a movie or a youtube video. I'm really concerned for that :( I would have to send it back for them to change it
Thanks for the review. Audio quality good. Video quality (web cam) as crappy as they come. I'm just not happy that Dell seems to take the non-revolutionary path of non-resistance. Because they're close to the MBP M1 Pro/Max config but not quite there, I just don't get why I should stick around. Got me an M1 Pro for Dell to keep comparing to. Just my 2 cents. As an XPS 9500 (and 7590 OLED) owner, I've been around long enough to be underwhelmed. I'm obviously not the demographic they're looking to reach.
Dear Andrew you always do a good review as always, and I have a request hope you can help me with it. Could you please upload the original 4K+ wallpapers of the XPS 9720? I have the 9700 the 2020 model and I would love to have the new wallpapers on it! Thanks a lot!
a "premium" keyboard on my new $5K DELL PRECISION still not functioning well ! after few times of fix problem trails from the Dell.... i really in a trouble with ...
I am looking for an upgrade For my current laptop because my processor is discontinued And and I am sporting a(n) amd radeon 530 gpu ,But I haven't decided if I want to get this one or wait until they release the the rtx 40 series in December or next years models
That is very strange you got so little battery life. Are you sure it did not do some updates or something else in the background? I don't understand why it uses more power than the XPS15 you tested, only the screen is better and for video watching they both should use the intel cpu decoder. If that is acurate, I think I'm going for the XPS15.
From everything I've read, while the Intel 12 generation processor provides superior multi-core performance, it is a power-hog, compared to 11 Gen processor. And it also runs hotter, something to be taken into account if you plan on using the laptop on your lap. The HP Spectre X-360 16 is a better value, whether you buy it with the 11 gen processor, or the 12 gen processor. You can get it with an OLED screen, and it has a type A USB port, as well as a MicroSD slot.
@@rogerl7533 The XPS15 I mention is using the same gen12 and got 12 hours of continuous web browsing. If you watch the detailed clip from PCWorld (I think), you will see in their gen12 vs AMD's finest at that moment that instant power is high, but as Intel finished the job quite a bit faster, the overall power consumption was not higher. And that is what matters, not a spike as the CPU does not run 24/7 in a spike.
@@andyH_England The XPS15 I refer to was tested here and had an OLED screen. OLEDs are power hungry. That is why I don't understand the 5 hours less web usage for the 17 inch model, same CPU.
I have had multiple xps 15 with the 4k display, and in real world usage they have all struggle to get more than 4 hours of battery. I imagine the 17" will be slightly shorter considering the larger display.
These XPS always have power port breaking issues, wouldnt buy another, power port died, I then changed the power cable to USB-C powwe and now the USB-C port has broken, no mis-use at all, very unhappy, huge repair costs!
A great laptop, but I wish its screen wasn't 60hz, dell has really lagged behind the competition, and it seems they are too leisurely sitting on their victory.
We did order (and receive the next day ;-) a mid-range configuration of this machine. We're going to use this machine as a general workspace in the lab (for students). But first I'm going to use it a bit to make a decision if I'm going to order more of those and the smaller siblings (9520, 9320+). This is me giving Dell maybe another chance after being absent from this brand the last 5 years (they messed up big time back then).
So... after taking it everywhere for almost a week, I finally got it installed in one of our lab's. Personally, the edges of the wrist rest are too sharp for me - also it's too heavy. I'm just too attached to the 13/14" form factor and weight of the 13" MacBook Pro (2018) and 14 -inch X1 Titanium Yoga. Fun fact - if I take both with me, they're still lighter than a XPS 17 ;-). So I'm not sure if I'll be more happy with the XPS 15 9520. Maybe give the XPS 13 Plus a chance and retire the X1 Titanium Yoga - um - I mean send it back to our notebook pool. Let's see what you have to say about it in your final review - the XPS13+ is supposed to be your future daily driver, right?
Got one XPS 17 9720 - 64 GB 2TB SSD,. Intel i9 12th generation top notch and the laptop is always freezing. The Intel GPU is always having spikes and the laptop is always too hot. Not happy at all in particular due to the investiment. Had to returned it since I can't even use it. Reinstall W11 3 times and same results. Any thoughts ?
Nice work. I'd love to see your Asus M7601 (VivoBook Pro 16X Ryzen 6000) review with 120Hz OLED display and RTX 3060. Heard it has similar battery life as MacBook Pro, and better than XPS 17 overall.
"I'm criticizing dell for not putting a high refresh panel into a PC that's not meant for gaming." 10:46 So you're criticizing them for not doing something that wouldn't make sense anyways since this is a creator/workstation PC, not an FPS pusher gaming rig. huh. otherwise good comprehensive review
What videos do you use for demo-ing the laptop displays? The one with honey and another yellow liquid with bubbles and also the one with DJ and the bouncing balls on speakers
I am glad that Dell doesn't use AMD which could have lead to higher wattage allocation to gpu, also better thermals and battery. Thx dell for keeping standards high 😘

Excellent review as always. I'm always fascinated by the Precision version of these, especially the thicker models (I traded up from an XPS 15 to a much beefier Precision 7750). Any chance of getting a big boy Precision 7750/7760/7770 review?
Yes stay tuned
Wow half the battery life of the MacBook pro 16 when compared to the 9720 with UHD. That's a tough sell for me.
Apple has always done better with battery life bc of their tendency to limit multitasking.
Question: how does this do using a external wide screen monitor? Or even a 2 monitor set up?
It has 4 thunderbolt 4 ports that support multiple monitors, including widescreen, 4k, and even 8K monitors.
Thanks for the detailed review! Is this the lightest 17” laptop on the market at the moment?
I have this same computer, but mine has WiFi 6E. It is a great computer. Keyboard sucks though. Always accidently hitting caps lock.
Good technical review
great video, if you had them at hand, it would have great to also show in the premiere export the MacBook Pro Max or any Mac product for comparison.
I've had a problem with mine, the problem is a buzzing sound coming from the right speaker when someone is speaking like in Zoom or from a movie or a youtube video. I'm really concerned for that :( I would have to send it back for them to change it
Always insane content sir. I am very lucky that i subscribed you
Thanks really appreciate it
Great video Andrew. Thanks again.
Can’t wait when you get the hp x360 ryzen 6000 series
Dear Andrew you always do a good review as always, and I have a request hope you can help me with it. Could you please upload the original 4K+ wallpapers of the XPS 9720? I have the 9700 the 2020 model and I would love to have the new wallpapers on it! Thanks a lot!
Could you have a look at the Asus m16?

@@sk32md oh thank you. Newly sent my bank details
Not having a number pad on a 17" laptop is ridiculous.
Have a 17 9730 i9 review?
a "premium" keyboard on my new $5K DELL PRECISION still not functioning well !
after few times of fix problem trails from the Dell....
i really in a trouble with ...
@@Flimzes I got the XPS17 in the end. I did not do any full test, but on some regular usage I alwas at about 50% after almost 4 hours of usage.
Nice review as usual Andrew, alreade watched the livestream and I think its a great laptop but overpriced
Nice review
Great review!
Thanks
At first i thought you are Robert De Niro
why is this way cheaper than their (mobile) workstations with similar specs or specs worse that this. what is the catch here?
The one with honey and another yellow liquid with bubbles and also the one with DJ and the bouncing balls on speakers
once you unplug it will work slower then m1 air macbook... pkease show us banchmarks by uploging the laptop//
Nice laptop

17inch 16:10 display laptop with oled?
U will lose ur battery so quick.
Aren’t OLED more power efficient than LCD displays?Unless you’re using a 4k resolution panel the battery would last long enough
@@harishprabhu02 OLED is efficient only in black color. Except that it requires more power consumption. Usually 3~4.5times more than LCD.
I am glad that Dell doesn't use AMD which could have lead to higher wattage allocation to gpu, also better thermals and battery. Thx dell for keeping standards high 😘
who needs thunderbolt? /s
