Fortunately they have gotten better lately. The original instruments until they started releasing V2s and V3s of reworked synths were more "inspired", and sounded nothing like the real deal. Now fast forward these last two years, and Arturia have finally upped their game a ton and the instruments work very close to 1:1. But if you had played the original Prophet vs a real one, or even U-He Repro 5, or their Model D vs the real deal or Synapse Legend you would see a far cry from the real thing, and all the models had a weird similar tone. Thankfully again they reworked their framework abd are building legit stuff now. :)
@@Tiger.Arcade It's honestly super-inspirational, i feel inspired near daily for a few days now just because the v collection has been so fun and so much a teacher of "woah, this is what 'x' instrument is like!" and in that i understand my own digital instruments and effects so much further, their short and as fair-long comings. I am a bit of a child of the forums of old-school, so i've read so much back and forth about various junos and dx7s etc but never fully appreciated even the fm synthesis of ole and new i've worked with - if you're an apt student there is so much to always learn. He probably didn't even know about them. People just make content for the sake of it these days, regardless of whether they actually know wtf they're talking about.
I have 2 MS-20’s that are 40 years old. They both sound similar for the most part. The Arturia collections are nice, some new features and all but it really is digital synth vs true analog. Sometimes the difference is obvious, but after using some effects it’s not even perceivable. Ultimately it’s more about your work flow style; DAW vs physical hardware that gets you creative.
What do you guys think, does the Arturia MS-20 V sound better than the Korg MS-20? There are tons of new features I wish my MS-20 had that this virtual one has like polyphony and a built-in sequencer.
I love this plugin so much it made me buy an MS-20FS. And the Arturia will remain more useful technically but the hardware makes me *feel* things the software doesn't. Can't explain it, perhaps just being able to be inside the performance with real physical knobs, and the howling filter interaction just being a bit more lively and punk on the real thing (though the Arturia is 90% of the way there). And there's no chance of the MK1 filter overloading the CPU...
I have the Korg Collection, though I'm conscious that their MS20 is likely based on the code the developed for the original Korg Legacy collection circa 2007. I'm wondering how Arturia's MS20 compares to the Korg Collection one.
I don't think it is. That legacy stuff is ridiculous and it doesn't even pretend to be an emulation. Arturia is going for emulating the hardware and the legacy stuff isn't at all - they just port the feature sets to a flat digital synth.
The Korg mS20 vst isn't as good as the ms20v. But only on emulation of the real thing but it still sounds good. Korg are not as good as Arturia period. The vsts are more for loading into hardware synths. So their software engineers spend more time in this than on normal computer OS's. They hardly ever update the vst versions. The Korg odyssey vst by Korg is nothing like the hardware and it's really poor in replication.

Buy the V Collection 9 for $250 during Black Friday. Otherwise I would never have imagined having the instruments it offers but in a Hardware version. I like the comparison to know how far technological advances go. If you like the instruments that the V Collection offers for the price, I think there is not much to think about.
I just got a mini - just love it, but I'm also enjoying both Arturia's version AND Korg's MS20 vst. Both vst's are great, but Korg's has a more authentic patch layout.
@Tiger.Arcade I totally get that. Just last night, I was creating patches on Korg's vst on my laptop during a storm with no access to my mini. Now I can use the saved vst patch to dial in something similar on my mini, then improvise further.
What about when we're getting into audio rate modulation territory? This is usually where I can tell the difference straight away between analogue and digital. Digital can't seem produce those really crunchy, super sonic, ear splitting, high frequencies. Always sounds rolled off to me or just flat out not there. I'm guessing it's too many cycles for the computer to keep up accurately that they just disappear. I find this works really well though for writing EDM. I love both :)
Wait... No filter comparison? No comparison of env behaviour? No patches made on one and compared to the other? :( EDIT: He used a demo version so there was obviously no time to do so.
@@Tiger.Arcade Ohhh! I'm sorry, my bad then.. I completely missed that part. That's so unfortunate. I'm sure most people would especially want to hear the filters.
Little word of advice: cut the first 3 parts of the video and start right with the comparison. Since that is in the title, people want to see that right away. only put a 15 second intro before that, that has a hook that relates directly to the video. for example play two samples back to back and say "Should I sell my MS-20? Let's find out"
Yes, I mentioned that I’m using a mini. “Not a real comparison” is debatable since the Korg ms-20 mini was created with the exact same engineers as the original MS-20 from 1978. Same sound, same look, just a quarter smaller.
@@OlivioSarikas I think you will find its Korg MS-20 Vs Arturia MS-20 V , and the Vs is an abbreviation of versus, PS i own an original 1978 korg ms20 and find some small differences in sound with the korg ms 20 mini.
Hey Larry! I understand your concern. However, the MS-20 is still a currently manufactured synthesizer albeit a replica of their original MS-20. The mini was made with the same engineers as the original from 1978 and sound differences between old and new are minimal. The mini is the same, just a quarter smaller.
@@Tiger.Arcade i can assure you that one ms20 mini and one full size / vintage sound very different. At the time of the appearance of the mini on the market I made a comparison and the old one is very musical, less straight, more harmonious. The mini looks like a toy in comparison
I'm probably going experiment this with the newer FS, though as I understand it the only thing different about it sound-wise from the mini is some noise characteristics. I got the FS instead of a mini only because it lives with a Sub 37 CV and full-size jacks are useful. This is a really interesting video.
There is a difference and I think it is a constant difference in sound. The arturia has a more plastic and 'polite' sound, sometimes you struggle to understand that it is an emulation of an ms20. The filter lacks a bit of nastiness. The difference however lies in the sound paste, the real ms 20 as soon as you switch it on has a truly 70s timbre that you can't find in the software. In any case it's a nice plugin, very useful for copying patches to the real thing :D
I have the PS20, Korg MS20 vst, MS20V and hardware K2 and MS20mini .. I like the lot. The ms20 vsts are very like the hardware but better as it's ...poly and enhanced sound shaping. Hearing an Ms20 do poly is superb as the filters suit poly sounds.
Love your vids brotha! Always watching your stuff. Just a friendly friendly suggestion to mute your vocal mic in post when the synth is being played 🤙🏽
Just upgraded, fantastic collection of classic synths... and more to come! I would love to see a PPG wave arrive at some point.
arturia always knocks it out of the park. love their stuff. especially the cs80... how else was i ever gonna get to play with a cs80

This is a great comparison. I added the video to the ds-10 / ms-20 blog
Awesome! Thanks for sharing Michael!
You forgot about the controls at the bottom right of the plug-in. Raising the brightness will equal the hardware unit.

That’s awesome! True, though about analog. Effects make it harder to detect raw analog sound.
This is true, too much time is lost to the debate vs the progression of beautiful and expressive musics
