Chimp Spanner Mӧbius Pt I - The Decomposer Lounge Reaction and Breakdown Session
Ah big love for giving this a spin man! So bizarre as I stumbled across your channel just the other day and was enjoying your meshuggah reactions! Really nice to see your first impressions of my music and thanks for the wonderful words!
Holy crap it's the Chimp man himself!!! Your music was formative for me in my late teens and it's great to see Chimp Spanner getting the recognition it deserves.
Hi Paul! You're one of the main people who helped expand my horizons of what music can be, so thanks for all the tunes over the years.
And 12 years after first seeing it, I still show people the Riverdance video if we come to talking about great drum performances!
Love you PUAL
thx for the sick riffs brother
You and Tosin were hugely inspirational to me. You mean we can take this stupidly heavy downtuned rhythmic roar and make it "pretty"?? Blew my mind
Thanks for that video man!
Chimp Spanner is a one man project (composition/production) and I was fortunate enough to be the live drummer.
Loved playing that kinda stuff 😁🤘
And btw it's all programmed drums on the albums, Paul Ortiz aka Chimp Spanner used to record drums playing on his keyboard "live" using a plug in 😉
Haha I just saw that Paul already commented on this 😅
Hey Boris! Just watched your Movius playthroughs for what must be the fiftieth time! 👌🥁
Hi, I watched Paul Antonio making this track along with many many others. His mum here. Just need to point out that on all chimpspanner recordings it is just one man. My son. No other musicians involved. He a multi instrumentalist. He finger drums and is a master at this. He is also producer, engineer. The lot. All done in a converted bedroom. The only time he uses other musicians is when he tours. His dad and me are so proud. Thank you so much for giving him a play. Xx
Hey Paul’s mum! 👋
YOOOO WE ARE DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE BOIS. YES
Heavily
I actually cannot believe that you are reacting to Chimp Spanner. You are seriously incredible dude!
Right! I thought I was like the only person who truly loves this album..
@@pierogi5359 was introduced to his music by one of ChimpSpanners friends who I used to live with. Incredible musician! Excellent album!
Awesome job even finding Chimp Spanner! Next has to be Navene K (former Animals as Leaders drummer, Navene Koperweis) !
Oh and also obviously insanely killer album and track! One of my favourites along with 'Clarity in Chaos', 'Supererogation' and 'The Mirror'
“The Mirror” is my favorite Chimp Spanner track.
Chimp spanner took a break from this (persona/band) for yearsss but he's back now recording a new album actually
Don't forget his ZETA album!
Has he done any other projects in between? Chimp Spanner fell off my radar for a while so I haven’t kept up with what’s been going on
@@CygnusVoyager there was a pop ish synthwave thing called zeta which had Dan from tesseract in it. Other than that I think he was doing freelance commercials and stuff
@@TheVashnessItself99 sweet, I’ll check that out! A collab with Dan sounds awesome
Wait, what? Are you sure? Please tell me you're sure. I can't stand getting my hopes up only for them to be crushed...
Duuuude......I love Chimp, so underrated. The drummer on this album Boris Le Gal is amazing alsoand super fun to watch.
Chimp Spanner is one guy, Paul Ortiz, who did everything from his home studio. The drums are programmed btw.
You have to do Plini- Electric Sunrise or I'll Tell You Someday
Salt charcoal too
I swear he did it already
As a big metal fan, I just want to ENCOURAGE you to keep reacting to different genres! They may not be my jam or they may not be my first choice, but different songs from different genres impress me and inspire me, so.... Keep it going!
Great breakdown, wasn't expecting you to review Chimp Spanner of all bands haha. The drums are actually programmed by Paul Ortiz (using a MIDI keyboard lol), who did all of the writing, playing, and recording on this album. There's a video of him demonstrating how he programs the drums using his keyboard and it's pretty insane. They did have Boris Le Gal as a touring drummer, and there are playthrough videos of him playing a number of their tracks though and he fills those shoes extremely well.
This is a knife in the chest for someone who loves pt 2 waay more..
Anything from Gru's Cosmogenesis album is right up the same alley as Chimp Spanner.
Dude... this is AMAZING to see. I can’t believe but I totally can believe Paul’s music is popping back up because yes IT WAS AHEAD OF ITS TIME. Sort of paved the way during the early years of home recording started to get obtainable to the average middle class citizen. This is a huge part of my life as he was around right as I was in my formative years and developing my sound and this was the music in METAL that spoke most to me. Enough of the older stuff had been done before. It’s time to move to more complexity, time signatures and so on. This is definitely the epitome of progressive metal from one persons mind. Imo. Thank you for doing this! Seriously. Paul deserves much more notoriety imo. I hope this gets him more fans!!! It would be great to see him play in the states again. He came to my home town area and played with some friends bands in Indiana. Great dude. Anywho again killer video ! So exciting and inspirational vibes goin on. What a time to be alive. Cheers!
Dead-on for recognizing that point in time. Gear and software was really in a transition period, and few ‘home’ artists survived it. I still refer to Paul’s mixes with my own work.
@@snail415 it’s not over for some people and some are just getting started. Still doing a home studio can open up doors in ones region. It’s not about national notoriety. Not everyone wants that much attention. But enough to establish oneself in the music community is enough
The Cobra, weaving in & out. Yes!
Sigur Ros - Glosoli, Saeglopur, or Varud!
Oooh!!!! Nice!! Still one of my fave artists, good to see ppl still giving “chimp spanner” some love!
You should really check out his and Daniel Tompkins project called ZETA! The song The Distance would be a good one for sure
Dan Tompkins work in TesseracT is legendary and ZETA is pretty decent aswell. Would love to see that!
Whole album is great
I agree - really looking forward to the new ZETA album.
Whaaaaat!! Dude you have been discovering the bands that got me into metal.
I have this album on LP. Bought it as soon as it came out. I've deeply respected Paul's work for several years. He's one of the select few composers that have had the greatest influence on my holistic approach to writing, along with Allan Holdsworth, Ryu Umemoto, Jake Kaufman, and Richard D. James in their respective fields. In any kind of modern metal, Paul takes the cake. It's a textbook description of the complete package from what my ears desire in this kind of music, and it's the least rough a template of what I have been pursuing for the past 10 years.
PS: I don't think I know any influential keyboardist yet, which is unfortunate seeing as I am a trained pianist myself. They're all over the place, and no one quite satisfies me; being either too rigorously jazzy/classical or they can't hold a progression. But I think that may be a fundamental fault of the instrument itself. Feel free to recommend me keyboard music!
Another great track for my playlist, thank you! lol
Daily spam
Let's add some Cilice to that list since you've got textures on there 😃
Yes! My man would get them chills if he listened to Vildhjarta All these feelings with that intro
@@danbyn9335 vildjharta would be a great one. The most recent single would be super cool to react to
Upvote for textures..super under rated
If you like vildjartha, then you will love stoort neer which is instrumental vildharjata
You reacting to Chimp Spanner def just put you on top of my list. Love all your reactions. More The Contortionist and Plini reactions please. From the Language album and I album respectively. Let's enjoy the journey together.
It's so cool to see and hear someone describe the exact mental road I traveled when listening to Chimpsanner, almost like describing the route I'm taking on a map without seeing the map itself if you know what I mean. They way you express yourself with your words and body whilst listening to this track in particular is almost the exact thing I was doing in my mind when listening to this exact track for the first time. Great video, so glad you've discovered Chimpsanner (Paul Ortiz) I've been listening to his stuff since his early SoundCloud days.
Once again beautiful video.
(P.S. I know this video is around a year old but I stumbled across it after listening to Chimp Spanners track Tombstone City, incredible track 👍)
I like how you're shirt is kinda matching with the album artwork
Daaaaammmnn I forgot about chimp spanner, love this guys music!
I've listened to this EP *so* many times. For me it's the perfect blend of complex rhythms and beautiful, soaring melodies (first time I heard the first track I thought "this could be a melody from Spyro Gyra"), and groove. Oh my god, the groove. Despite all the complexity there's always that solid pocket that you mentioned, allowing you to always keep the one clear in your head and to just groove along. So many good things to say about this EP. I definitely recommend listening to it in its entirety.
Massive Chimp Spanner fan. If you're after more space metal as I like to call it, I'd recommend Entities - Oni. Massive pads, heaps of space and sick riffs.
Glad to see this getting some attention! I feel like no one else knew about the Chimp, rock on man!
Damn, I really didn't expect this. Yes! Awesome song and artist.
Wanna go to a country where there is surfing from the vibes. Sick choice of song too
Missed this upload but Mobius I is an absolute classic. Was in middle school listening to this lol.
AWESOME!!!!!!! FINALLY someone reacting to Paul!!!!
Absolut incredible composer/musician he is!!!
THIS ALBUM WAS SO GOOD
I fully agree. It's in my top five for sure, perhaps even top three.
I'm sure its been said already but Chimp Spanner is just one dude.
never heard this song and I must say I am a huge fan of the chords here. and the chugging, and the solos, and everything this was so jazzy and the changes made everything pop... I am worried that I will start listening to jazz...
Holy shit I haven't thought about Chimp Spanner in like a decade
Part 3 is the BEEEEEEEESSST!!!!
First time hearing chimp. Awesome 😎
The most played song on my 2021 Spotify 💥😁
Woah I haven’t thought about this band in YEARS. One of the more memorable bands of the early djent days
You matched the album art with your shirt!
Paul is the guitarist, bassist keyboardist and drum programmer of chimp spanner. 1 man band
i saw Chimp Spanner, instant like!
One of my favourite artists! So happy you finally got round some Chimp Spanner. You gotta check out "The Mirror"" eventually dude!!
Awesome. Paul makes killer music
Love your reactions and breakdowns man. I would love for you to check out the band VOLA. Shades of Meshuggah and Depeche Mode.
YES! VOLA need a lot more exposure. I'm biased as they're from my home town, but I truly of the opinion they're the bast band to come from Denmark in my lifetime.
Vola and TesseracT are 2 I’m really hoping for more of!!
Another major fave
How about some of "The Algorithm?" I've heard them all the way through, and their latest album is a buffet for any coder to just sit and code all day. Totally irresistable.
Yep One of the best Chimp work
There's something darker is you guys haven't heard already Allt - Covenant
I absolutely love that you're just going deeper and deeper down the modern prog metal rabbit hole
Absolutely love Chimp Spanner aka Paul Ortiz! He has been on a bit of a hiatus since the release of this EP, but actually he came out with a new song this year called Tombstone City. Absolute banger of a track, hope you get to check it out at some point.
Thank you for illuminating so many various artists to us 🤘
This is amazing!
Thank you for you vids!!
I'm surprised no one has recommended most people's first foray into math rock: F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X. by Fall of Troy
Fellow guitar hero fan I presume
Loudest Shop Vac in the World by Don Cab was my math rock inauguration.
Most basic FOT song tho 😭
Wow! I stubble upon this while searching for some Chimp Spanner to recommend to another reactor. Insta-like and subbed after 2 mins or so.. And Paul Ortiz commented?! Super cool.
That EP is a one of a kind absolute MASTERPIECE.
This song is amazing holy shit
Having watched most of your videos, I can tell you that your breakdowns have added a bunch of songs to my already-long playlist! Keep it up :-)
I really appreciate this channel. It’s awesome to get a perspective on a variety of genres and artists from someone who knows the ins and outs of recording/mixing/engineering. I think this prog rock lane offers a lot of creativity and unique approaches to arrangement.
Woo chimp spanner
I cannot possibly tell you how much I love Chimp Spanner (the british name for what Americans call a Monkey Wrench). It is indeed one guy Paul Antonio Ortiz. He did a wonderful side project with Dan from Tesseract on vocals and his own gf on keyboards called Zeta which is a really lush aetherwave vibe. Paul still plays guitar and does programming there.
yessss
Oooooo Djent instrumental! Maybe Intervals is in our future? Automaton by Intervals is probably a good introduction to the band. :)
The atmosphere in the intro is really nice. Reminds me of space documentaries and science museums
Chimp/Paul is a very talented fella, love his stuff.
Love the new logo!!
If you enjoy ambient prog you should really check out Stömb they're a djent instrumental ambient band!
Thanks for this one Geebz! All the Chimp Spanner releases are S-tier music in my book, so this analysis was a particular treat. Aloha!
Doesn't he play his own drums? Just records using electronic drums set with midi. Maybe I'm wrong.
You know you have to finish the entire Mobius movements now....!
Never expected anyone to react to this, lol. Here are some prog suggestions / circle back to. Leprous Contaminate Me and The Sky is Red, Haken - Cockroach King or Pareidolia, Between the Buried and Me, - Voice of Trespass, Liquid Tension Experiment - Acid Rain, Native Construct - Mute and if one who not enough people know / react to is Ihsahn who does progressive black metal. Check out Ihsahn Undercurrent.
Time for some Don Caballero. Less djenty more mathy!! Great Review of Chimp Spanner.
DUDE! You have to react to RIFFLORD - Tumbleweed!!!
I cannot believe this band is not more well-known. They are legends of underground. I think you would love them brother and so would is your subscribers!
I’m dropping this comment in a ton of your videos because nothing would make me more happy than seeing you listen to this for the first time!
Aloha Thank u so much for helpping me open my ears to new music. huge fan thanks brotha
Maaaaaan, I forgot about Chimp Spanner! Great project and a lovely dude from what I remember of talking to him on twitter back in the day.
Nice, this reminds me of The Contortionist.
TesseracT - Of Matter. Hexes, Nocturne 🖤🖤🖤
Man this is just a joy to see, it's like finally getting somebody to listen to and appreciate the weird shit I listened to when I was getting in to progressive/technical metal!!
Gonna keep leaving my recommendation for another Loathe tune - Heavy is the Head That Falls. One of THE most evocatively heavy songs I've ever heard. Awwwright!
I would absolutely LOVE if you could review the album cut of the Blossoming Beelzebub by Dir En Grey. It is an absolute sludge metal trip!
This is all one guy, Paul Ortiz!
I'm learning that in these comments - wow - absolutely insane talented!!
Never thought I'd see Chimpy here. Check out ZETA, it's basically this composer + Tesseract's singer and retro 80's synth. It works.
I’ve kept up with Paul since 2014. He is beyond underrated given his contributions to progressive metal. You HAVE to give his other project Zeta a spin. Phenomenal production.
A super underrated band similar that I'll recommend is Polarization, if you happen to see this I'll recommend the song Solar Attack. I think you'd really like it alot
For a good ambient production within a metal song I would recommend Rolo Tomassi "The Hollow Hour" or "A Flood of Light". They are melodic yet intensely passionate. I would have recommended some of their previous tracks, but those are perfect for this.
If you like this, Paul Ortiz - Mr ChimpSpanner - has a Twitch channel where he streams himself playing, writing and recording his music. There’s an active chat community and he’s a sweet, humble, funny guy :)
Awesome vid. You’re gonna freakin love the bands Gordian Knot and Cynic !
Hope you get some inspiration to do some more instrumental prog from here. Been hoping you'd do David Maxim Micic since your Disperse vid. Would also be cool to see some Modern Day Babylon too, in that same vein.
David Maxim Micic is on the horizon with my playlist :)
@@KeyOfGeebz Check out DMM's other projects Destiny Potato and Sordid Pink as well while you're at it :)
@@KeyOfGeebz you react to all of my favorites. Can't thank you enough for allowing me to hear these songs for the first time all over again. You rock.
David maxim micic is one of my favorites btw.
You should definitely check out some Mechina! Alithea, As Embers Turn to Dust, Cryoshock, The World We Lost, or practically anything from Siege would be great to hear your input on.
Really awesome that you got around to such a great artist like Chimp Spanner, really looking forward to his return on a new album soon, super exciting stuff. You said in this video that you really like ambient stuff, and the band I would recommend for some of the best contrast between heavy and ambient would be the band Uneven Structure and the video for Frost/Hail from them. Really think you would dig that for sure. They have some great songs in their catalog but man, frost/hail is such a good representation of why I believe they nail contrast so much better than most bands of that nature. Keep it up dude, always fun to hear ya talk about these bands that I've been loving the past decade or so.
I've been watching your reactions for a week now and holy crap, my jam playing has gotten so much better. I'm a guitarist and have gotten a much better view of the entire ensemble.
You were talking ambient and I'm like 'What the...!' So I backtracked to the beginning and now I know what you mean. You've got me back into wearing proper cans (though cheaper Sony's) and I can hear so much more as you talk about the various pieces, so thanks for that. Looking forward to more metal and prog deep dives... thanks for all your time and commitment to doing this and just for super good vibes.
Chimp Spanner has been releasing some new music this past year for the first time since around 2012 when this album came out I believe. Would be awesome to see you check out one of those tracks to hear what his modern approach is these days :^) some really cool ones in there.
2012?1 That long ago?! I have a signed pre-order copy of this, how time flies. Such good music!
You gotta finish the trilogy! Part 2 & 3 are the best parts!
Most deff will be doing that.
@@KeyOfGeebz Hell yeah! Thanks for the response brother! Gotta shoot a Epic request for you, check out Symphony X's The Odyssey! (Based off Homer) it's it's 24 min epic!
wait just got here from the new Chimp Spanner video lol.
I'm sure you have this on your list, but just to remind you, The Dillinger Escape Plan need a listen🤘
Definitely check out Vitalism. More instrumental djent with some jazz and flamenco and other cool stuff. Band is from Brazil. I recommend Pagan, Pagan pt 2, and Yami Obi, but all their stuff is killer.
I found this song thru guitar hero, you must have some good friends! I love the variety of music you cover man
chimp sspanner rullllessss
I’d love for you to do a video on Portishead Live at Roseland. Glory Box or Roads preferably. That would be great. Cheers bud 🍻
