25 Years ago, I drove up to the Pitt County Red Cross offices and just offered to help with the relief efforts. I never thought for a second I would end up working with the Pitt County Red Cross for two weeks helping to coordinate relief teams for the shelters or how that simple offer to help would impact my life for decades to come. I still recall the Pitt County Red Cross feeding up to 10K people a day at shelters all over the county, having to airlift supplies across the river, and the amazing outpouring of community support long before the National Red Cross and FEMA actually showed up.
As we see all the devastation happening now in Western NC from Hurricane Helene, my heart aches for the people living through that and understanding the destructive power of water. I also know that in the midst of crisis, that the communities come together to support each other. Hold strong.

I'll never forget this! I was in middle school. We had to ride in dump trucks from my neighborhood to the other side of town. We thought we were going to die! I'll never forget.
We stayed at the middle school until we were able to get to a hotel where we stayed for free for a week! After that week, we were able to go back to our homes that were flooded. Some of the houses had little water in them and were saved while others were completely destroyed.

Excellent production WNCT. I was 19 years old almost to the day when Floyd hit Wilson. Took out my apartment at Toisnot among so much other devastation...

Remembering my Daddy's hometown of Kinston after Hurricane Floyd. After Helene, this brings back memories of Lincoln City, Kinston.

I can't believe that it's been 25 years already. We lived just east of Jacksonville at the time and if I remember correctly, we took almost a direct hit. But ended up being the lucky ones. We lost power pretty early on, I watched as the transformers blew up across the street. We didn't have the terrible flooding though. Somehow New River never flooded and I don't even think it came close. It always stood out to me just how bad Kinston got flooded for some reason. A weird memory but our mail was routed through Kinston and I think it was well over a month after before we started to get mail again.

I remembered Hurricane Floyd. I was working in Winterville at a place called Fullertons. My uncle was a police officers at the winterville police dept and he got off work and picked me up from work that day. I was so scared when we had to go to his house so that he could get some items and the water was too high for cars to be on the road. Me and my grandma stayed over my aunt house which is my grandma's daughter and i will never forget the wnd kept hitting the house i thought her entire house was about to blow away and then when everything was over with i went back home and the place where i lived was dry and looked like nothing ever happened. I was sooo surprised!
