The most realistic part of this film is how the militaries of the world decided that they would just attack the non hostile aliens for lack of understanding.
@Fire serpant he's right, beyonder had eyes to see. But you are also right, this is just a great piece of filmmaking that transcends to the level of art.

BingBing BongBong couldn’t wrap my head around what? That hilariously inaccurate docking scene? A silly, overly dramatic example of time dilation that was based on highly trained astronauts acting stupid? The fact that “love” will bring us all together? Yeah. You also probably think 2001 is about how legos created humanity. You’re not nearly as smart as you think you are for getting some banal concepts with no depth from Interstellar.
Angry - Vault - Inhabitant Its ploy is silly and character development is minimal at best; there’s practically no difference between any of the characters at the beginning through to the end. It’s mostly spectacle, with little actual meat.
it wasn't - the majority of audience felt patronised and cheated by the editing trick that opened the story with flash backs - which were really flash forwards but only possible after she encountered the hoptopods! What an awful awful movie... even worse it had the potential to be 10/10
Rocco Siffredi lmao what? No, gotta disagree here. The flash forwards WERE THE ENTIRE POINT. The majority of the audience felt patronized because the majority of audiences are stupid.
Rocco Siffredi 84% audience score on RT, 88% liked it on Google’s poll, 81% on Metacritic, 8.2 on IMDB. That’s not a majority of negative opinions in any form.
The answer to me seemed very clear after watching the movie. There were only two things humans were better at than the heptopods Killing: this breaks down into two possiblilities as to why the heptopods need our help they either need help killing an even more violent race than humans or they need to prevent humans from killing the heptopods 3000 years in the future. Algebra: the heptopods can't see end answers to problems they can't solve. As they can see time as a whole they can only see solutions to problems they eventually can solve. Think of seeing the back page of a math book with all the answers already completed. The heptopods know how to answer problems correctly but not truly solve the problems. Or they see all the steps of the problem being solved simultaneously, yet algebra requires sequential solving.
Wow... just wow... I scrolled down the comments seeking a reason why we need to help the interstellar-travel-capable-gravity-defying creatures. And the answer seemed disturbing for how close or is real
I am among the many who loved this movie. I found in it a sign of hope that we wouldn't destroy a thing just because we didn't understand it. How are we to be sure an entity is dangerous, hostile or peaceful and harmonious? I hope when the time does come, and I know it will, that we will have the knowedge to find difference.
I'm just after watching it and loved it. It also conveys the dangers of language if we fail to understand each other. If communications fail, violence will follow it.
Best we can do is hope we get the good types you speak of that want to connect grow and share together first and not the bad ones that want to kill every thing they find like the Independence Day aliens. The scary part is wondering which one will we encounter first.
Please, I figured that movie would be banned by our 74th president last year. But she instead endorsed it. Strange that she'd endorse an almost century old movie.
This film uses elements from a hypothesis known as “Block Time”. She doesn’t see “into the future”, or the past. She perceives all of her timeline at once, as a whole. She appears to be able to focus on a particular point in her timeline, giving her the illusion of “now”. Her “now” can be any point, or all in compassing, depending on how she is choosing to view it. At least that’s the way I see this, which is due to my exposure to the block time hypothesis.
Very underrated comment because that's what I thought after I finished the movie. I was somewhat lost in what I saw. The protagonist just received her all existance from the aliens and she is constantly confused as to where in her life, she is, in the present, if there is one. as if she's in a dream with no start or begining but she knows all the events. Maybe that is the burden of knowing the future and the destruction of free will. Once you give in to that, you have arrived maybe like the title Arrival
Well if you guys don’t remember where she even says I don’t see all my memories from start to finish she always sees her memories as if they were in the middle .
@@SinisterShot1 I agree. It’s always “now” regardless of “when” she is perceiving. I assume you’re referring to the “middle” as being her perception of “now”. It’s a very interesting concept. It is easy to see memories as a form of time travel. I know it feels like something I’m remembering just happened, even if it was 40 years ago. So it’s not too difficult to see future events the same way. Perhaps that could explain déjà vu. We simply can’t, or don’t realize we can, change the course of events. 🤷🏻♂️
How can one reconcile free will with the hypothesis of block time? A timeline assumes all events that have or will happen. Unless every past and future choice is already determined then the theory holds no ground. I believe in free will. ie I decide which choices I make and they can never be predetermined.
Possessing knowledge of future events would not change anything. In a truly deterministic universe, we would still be bound by one path. Louise knew her daughter would die and was powerless to stop it.
GODZILLA godzilla but knowing the result of a football match would make betting on the match pointless. As it will happen and nothing will change the result
All competitive sports, all art, all creativity, all motivation to do anything that depends on being able to change circumstances or any amount of randomness. All gone. This of course assumes they have a choice to NOT do those things. Like Banks in the movie, she knew she would have a daughter with Hawkeye, she knew she would die young (and horribly), and she was utterly, completely, 100% unable to alter a single thing. No early testing, knowing what would come. No telling Hawkeye. She goes through with it, because she has no choice. So in that case, sure, people would still bet, people would still play sports... because that's what they did, and they are unable to alter their actions in the slightest, no more so than a character in a book can change their mind if you go back a page. The erasure of the illusion of free will.
thats why i prefer the time branch theory that every choice creates a branching path as a example imagine you had 5 dollars and had to choose what you wanted more a big chocolate bar or a ice cream cone you pick the cone well there a universe outthere were the only diffrence was you choose the chocolate bar
I vaguely understood the twist that happened at the end before I watched Arrival, but the story was portrayed so well that I had forgotten it and was shocked all over again. This movie is amazing. Editing, performance, visuals. All top notch and underrated.
Trust us to kill one of them, that is the problem with humanity, we think we are bigger than we actually are when in reality we are just a small part of something bigger.
I was born in Venezuela and raised in Maracay, and i remember when I saw this movie for the first time and saw that one of the alien locations was Maracay, I freaked out
I loved that the underlying theme was the circular\eternal nature of time itself. As you said, Hannah being a palindrome, the flashbacks\flashforwards that Louise sees, and even the similarity of the language and the Ourobos, hinting at the never-ending cycle of it. This is such a beautiful film, on so many levels.
I thought it was interesting that Louise and her husbands falling out following Hannahs diognosis was down to the revelation that she knew about it before Hannah was conceved, but hid the fact.
BingBing BongBong You probably think Interstellar has a better plot than 2001. Hint: you’re not smart for liking Interstellar. It has the depth of a puddle, but obscures it by making dumb people think they’re smart for “getting it”.
I know this is probably a minority opinion, but I actually do think that knowing the future can allow one to change it - and I'm not convinced that Hannah's early death is truly inevitable. There's a scene in the film where Hannah asks Louise what it's called when both sides get something they want; Louise calls it a win-win, but Hannah is looking for an answer that's "more sciency". At first Louise brushes her off, but then we see in the present Ian is talking about the concept of a non zero-sum game. We return to the flashback, and now Louise knows the answer - a non zero sum game. It's certainly open to interpretation. It could just be that Louise happened to remember that term at that point. But it certainly looks like information being transmitted from past-Louise to future-Louise, and changing her actions. After all, if you couldn't use the information you received through the language, you'd be like Doctor Manhattan - knowing everything that's going to happen, but unable to change it. It's hard to see how that could be considered a useful 'weapon'. So, I choose to believe that the future is not fixed, and that what they're seeing at any given time is what the future would be if they did not act on the information received.
Interesting comment. Causality and inverted causality loop, that's how I viewed that scene. The recall of a memory by future Louise is normal causality, while past Louise remembering that future memory completes the loop. I think that it's no coincidence the Heptapods written language is loopy. It seems like even for them there are limits to their prognostic perceptions. They perceive certain events in the future and past as linked, but they can't see all the events that lead to certain outcomes. Meaning that it may be impossible to change some future events. If my idea is true though, it would mean that knowing the future in limited causality/inverted causality loops still leaves you in a mainly deterministic universe, unable to truly change the future. I think the film bears this idea out. Why would the Heptapods be here, and willingly sacrific Abbott (or was it Costello, Heptapods all look alike to me lol) if there was another way?
Manhattan was outsmarted. Some of the information Louise gets must occur in the future otherwise she is creating information paradoxes and somehow learning things from sources that dont exist and never occur.
It kind of falls to the question then of is there such a thing as fate and choice? Because what this movie implies is that no matter what you’ll end up doing the same things. You have no choice and thus no free will. So you believe that you do have free will? Respectable. Though I fear that either there is only one timeline and thus everything is set or that should they actually do change it they’ll collapse time itself.
I agree. After watching it. I think there are scenerios that happened but then changed as the gifted alien language played out it's influence. The ships would have been attacked but just disappeared without retaliation proving the Chinese faction wrong and the world in disorder. The language would have been studied in depth by Banks who would develop the power of accessing future knowledge from herself. General Shang in regret, being aware of this uses this to send a message to himself to change his mind. In the instant he provides this Banks past is changes as she has the key information. A weapon where you can make changes in the future to affect the past. Rather than thinking of her of accessing the information from the future think of it as sending it back to the past as visions to change the present. In a sense the aliens are doing exactly the same thing by involving hummanity in their striuggle. They choose this scenerio and Abbott knows he must die but nevertheless is willing to sacrifice himself for his people.
A truly superb movie. The pace was just right. While it is considering science-fiction, it’s a testament to the world as it stands. Tolerance and understanding are the tools needed to ensure we all get along together. Look to the past for the diplomacy of our ancestors trying to avoid conflict and we can enjoy a future that is conflict free. Language is the real barrier. Knowing a language is different from comprehending it. Let’s all just get along with one another.
@@jeffbrownme2 They can see the past and future. Humans are needed in their future but the humans couldnt get to that point unless they went back and taught them the language to communicate. They already saw the events and choose to go even though one dies. Because it must happen. Same as Amy Adam character still chooses to have her daughter even though she knows the future outcome of her young death. Its about appreciating and loving the moments/time you have now more because you know the results.
* *3000 years later the Aliens come back* * "Yeah we're in need of new teachers, not a single one of us wants to teach our pesky children, ugh! sooooo congratulations! you know our lenguage, you're hired!"
xX Valtiel Xx I thought similar. I think their way is dying. So they needed to find and teach their gift so when it comes their legacy doesn't die. The movie is about legacy. Louise's child and work are her legacy. The infinite symbol is also often connected to legacy.
That makes a TON of sense, Mister Spencer. And i'm not being sarcastic here, You just noticed some direct links to ANOTHER real world idea that has more than noticeable relevance at basically any time in the world, as well as being one of the many moral and psychological ideas that is seen as incredibly important. "If I die, will it be for nothing?" That simple question has made many people terrified, while many others find it either exciting or comforting. It all depends on their mental state and emotions at the time they think about it. Anyway, when I read what you said, suddenly, stuff just clicked in my head. It automatically made sense, somehow. Good work, Mister Spencer. Have a nice day.
I've also wondered about why they would need our help in 3000 years' time. I don't think we need a sequel to explain that because this film is good as a standalone, but I still wonder. Like the comments here mentioned could it be due to a loss of their language? An alien threat? I mean 3000 years from humanity, especially with the tool the aliens gifted them, would be WAY more advanced than we are now.
An intelligent alien race visits our planet, becomes allies with us, and then goes on to... get us to help take care of their annoying kids while they're out for the night
Very true there are words in other languages that convey emotions and feelings that cannot be translated into English.. Language is expansive and beautiful ❤️
@@disappearintothesea But I have to say that Math makes me see the world differently. Mathematics is considered a type language, therfore maybe that counts.
I somehow missed this film upon release. My wife and I watched it last night and it sorta broke us in the best of ways. It reaffirmed a deep sense I believe we all share that there is more to this life, world and existence than we can see. Stanley Kubrick would have been proud of this one.
Denis Villeneuve's Arrival is a thought provoking and emotional cerebral thriller, a mystery, like first contact itself. It's not about the Aliens, it's about us, mankind, our perceptions, how we view ourselves and deal with each other. Arrival along with Ryan Eslinger's 2018 film UFO are two of the best cinematic representations of what first contact could look like. Visually stunning with a phenomenal performance from Amy Adams, a great supporting cast, and a smart script make Arrival a not to miss film for all Science Fiction fans!
I think it’s interesting that we humans still feel like the most alien-looking thing is a squid or octopus. It is possible they would be floating in their own atmosphere though and the gas is an artificial version.
People just aren't creative anymore, like Lovecraft or how some of those "angels" are supposed to look. Bunch of floating eyes with giant ass wing like things, I think I'd take the squid like creature before that mind fuck of a being
@@Tavis15ify I mean the depiction of those “angels” is biblically accurate. You can’t believe an angel looks like a white male with blue eyes when even the book responsible for creating and - up until now, the only “evidence” for them - says they don’t. I’m sorry, but you just can’t cheery-pick the Bible and remove things you don’t like or agree with.
@@Tavis15ify The true meaning of the word "Alien" is that it means "Doesn't look belong on Earth" and those examples you picks does in fact look Alien including marine life specially Deep Sea Creatures. We think is this and that is because that's how Humans comprehend things they see. You're not Smart. You're not a Scientist You're not even full time Employee.
Did Abbot die from the explosion? In the film it says "Abbot is death process", not directly that it does from the implosion. This next argument mute be moot with the time processes in this universe, but personally I understood that "process" just meant he was unfit to continue the studying, and was dying, not dead. But with the heptapod language being ""timeless"", might mean that he just died.
Henry Ward-Raatikainen I’ve seen this theory that since the heptapods weren’t confined by time that even if they died that they were not actually dead. Like Abbot may have died but he is still able to go through his life in any order that he wants before his death, and is just restricted past his death point
they are still confined by time. how long they can live is not said. "death process" may simply be a language barrier. not all words have direct translations. though "death process" may be the same as the word "dying", i'm guessing it's just as literal of a translation as it could be without simplifying to how our language works. it's not speaking english to her after all. what i'm curious about is if you're able to perceive events in time that are not connected to your own experiences, or past your own lifespan. there isnt ever shown a "flash forward" vision of something she wasnt physically there for. If what you can see of time is bound by your ability to be in that moment would allude to the heptapods having extraordinarily long lifespans. or possibly technology/biology that allows them to transfer their consciousness to new bodies. i could be 100% wrong though lol.
@@tonyw1983 no I agree. I thought the same thing. Either the heptapods live 3,000 years or there some major technologies that allow them to see those events. The language just allows you to experience time non-linearly but that does not mean it allows you to teleport through space as well as time. You are restricted to your body in space but no single moment in time.
@@SchamaliDhali right, but if your body is not there at a specific time, then you cannot "experience" it regardless of your ability to perceive time non-linearly. i think long life spans is the probability. however, generationally, a future generation could pass back events from the future, up through the older generations to our present to deliver the warning. that would be rather unique!
@@djgroopz4952 How time works, if it's already happened once it'll happen again and can't be changed, so like how her daughter will die but she can't stop it
Extremely underrated movie! I only just now watched it and loved every moment of it. I love to learn languages and make it my purpose to learn structure and pattern between languages even tho I can’t speak them. I completely understood what they meant by learning to think differently when learning a new language. Ahh I’m rambling. But I just wanted to say AMAZING movie. Really tickled my fancy for languages and my fancy of sci-fi!!!
On surface level I want that too, but tbh I think the story was resolved in the end of the movie. The aliens did what they had to do and because time is circular, we can assume the Earthlings/humans will eventually help the heptapods. There wouldn’t be any conflict for a second film since we know what will happen due to the nature of the heltapod language.
@@ethanahmu6149 but the heptapods also can see the future, they saw a coming peril they needed help with. Knowing what's coming doesn't make it not happen. On second thought this movie is awesome and sequels are often absolute garbage so maybe it's best this is a once and done film
It would be really difficult for any sort of film to live up to the expectations that people will have from it being a mystery and open to interpretation.
I think a point made was that you could change the future, she chose to have her daughter knowing the husband would leave when she was diagnosed, and her daughter would die, she chose to treasure that time rather than choose different.
I have to say that this was the best explainer video I've ever come across on YT... You seem to have not only gotten the facts correct, but also the underlying meaning of the movie... Most sites, even fan-sites, do a poor job of all of this... You've earned a new subscriber today...

The key to Arrival is an esoteric concept known as the _Parousia,_ which means "arrival" in Greek and which is about the Second Coming (or arrival) of the Christ. The concept is likewise part of _prisca theologia_ ("ancient theology").

Great video, BUT I would have liked it if you had touched on the relationship between Amy Adams's character and Jeremy Renner's character. They are Hannah's parents, but during the movie you are made to understand that they separated shortly after Hannah got sick. Amy Adam's character knew the Hanna would eventually get sick and die at a young age, BUT she kept that knowledge from Jeremy Renner's character so When Hannah got sick and Jeremy learned that Amy new all along that she would get sick and die at a young age he was upset that she never told him this would happen, had he been told of this he might have chosen to not have have a child with Amy, no adult if told, "Hey you are going to meet this woman and get married to her, the two of you are going to have a daughter and that daughter, in her late teens or very early twenties is going to die a slow and painful death, and your daughters death is going to tear you apart and you will never fully recover from her death" is going to say OK lets get married and make a baby so that we can both be torn apart by watching our beloved daughter slowly get sick and die over weeks/months!!! because that sounds like such fun! It was implied that Jeremy Renner's character was very upset with Amy's character for having never told him this and that is why they separated. Many people have children and many parents lose children at a young age, and it often times leads to the ending of the marriage due to the trauma that comes from losing a child. BUT there are many people who learn before they ever have children that they carry some kind of "genetic fault" that would cause them to pass that default gene onto their children should they ever chose to have a child, and so many/most of those people chose to adopt, or use a sperm/egg donor so that they can still be a parent but not pass a genetic default on to their children which will eventually lead to a slow and painful death for the child. Jeremy Renner's character felt betrayed by Amy's character for knowing what would happen and keeping quite about it. NOW one could say, well the future could not be changed, it had already been written in stone, BUT keeping something like that quiet and not letting your future spouse know is just dirty, it would be like knowing that you carry the "Huntington's Disease" gene and not telling your spouse and then you and your spouse begin having children and then when your child starts to display symptoms when they are 16 you say to your spouse "OH Yeah, BTW i knew I carried the Huntington's Disease Gene and, I was the one who passed the defect gene on to our child so now we get to watch our child slowly suffer and die and there is nothing either of us can do about it" How do you think most spouses would respond to that news?
Yeah. But would he had believed her after she told him? That's just like when a woman has girlfriends that tell her, "Chile, that man is no good; you need to dump him. I've seen him around town with other women." Then the woman might rationalize and be like "Oh. Maybe you misunderstood what you saw. Or, "Ok. So he has a wandering eye, but once he gets a taste of this, he won't be straying no more." People are told things outright a lot of the time, but we as individuals tend to think WE can be the one to change things and make an outcome different, even if the outcomes has been the same for thousands of other people in the same situation. Even though he met the heptapods himself, she was the only one that received the future revelation of their future together. So, yeah, he could believe that the aliens existed cuz he saw that with his own eyes. But having not been privy personally to the vision Amy's character had, he probably would have told her she was trippin'. But when you are in love with someone, you are willing to rail against the odds. So chances are, he would've have still procreated with her anyway. Even Amy's character was probably hoping that time was mutable and wasn't fixed & that her foreknowledge of her daughter's fate was given to her FOR the purpose of avoiding the tragedy of it by finding a cure or something.
A friend recommended this movie to me & I am glad he did. It was a VERY slow burning movie but well worth it. I loved the whole "Bootstrap Paradox" premise. And also how it asks if you knew something bad or such was going to happen (ie. her daughter's tragically short life) would you go through with it. Excellent movie for even those not a fan of Sci-fi...although I don't know how one could not be a fan of Sci-fi😁
I would really like to see a 2nd part to this movie. I’m sure they could come up with a good story line. Even if it involved different aliens or even The Borg.....ohh wow I’m going nuts being told to stay inside all the time lol
You are Awesome! And Aussie to, (I'm aussie as well). This film was such a cool film that changed my perception of science fiction films forever. Anyway keep up the good work.
Amy is a wonderful actress. More importantly, she seems to almost always choose great scripts. She's not chasing the money, she's truly involved in the collaborative art of film making. I wish I could spend 30 minutes talking with Amy. It would enrich my life.
The Abyss is, in my unhindered opinion, a movie that is easy to watch multiple times. Watching the bonus features is as enjoyable as watching the movie is. The amount of effort that went into making that movie was astonishing.
I love this movie, I love linguistics and such so the whole process of understanding their language & the connection between alien & human was just amazing. It’s one of those rare movies that every now and then have me smiling happily for some reason 😂
Great movie that was not understood many that saw it and probably still don't. Good explanations of some things I didn't pick up on when I watched it, makes me want to go back and watch it again now.
The movie raise a question "is our life/fated predetermined" & if you know the future (experience it have memory of it) will you change it or will you let it happen. A better question is can you actually change your future even if you know it? What if all the decision that you make will still lead to that future. what if you cannot change anything & your attempt to change something ultimately lead to the same end. What if your choice does not matter cause your story already written & you are just going through it.
There's a point where that line of argument has to fall apart. If you see yourself dying of old age, and instantly drink cyanide before putting a pistol into your mouth and pulling the trigger, then it is doubtful that any force of inevitability could render that vision of the future true. Same thing with the protag. If she knew that she would survive long enough to have a daughter, that might well cause her to take a risk that would result in her death and her daughter never coming to pass. She might well have decided to sterilize herself so that she could not conceive children. Whatever would cause the inevitability of time would then have to spontaneously undo those changes in order for Hannah to be born. If this were the way the universe worked, there would inevitably be 'superhuman' individuals that would not be able to die before time was ready for them to die and would quickly learn this after repeatedly defying death in the most unorthodox of ways. In short, the system would be one that could be gamed and this would not require you to even know the future, just that things were inevitable and you could roll the dice as many times as you liked until you finally hit the snake eyes that was your real death.
flyboymb I totally agree, I don’t think people understand that aliens are used in media to push social agendas. Nihilism and luciferianism is at the center of most Hollywood stories about the future. Science theories are just theories for a reason, Hollywood has made society believe in those theories.
I'm not into nihilism, I have my believe in God & Jesus Christ. I personally believe that life as we know it are beautiful things and have meaning. Although different ppl have diferent difinition of the meaning of life that mostly subjected to their upbringing & lifestyle. I have own my believe but i also understand the logic of science & its world view. I know that there are higher power & greater things out there that can make us seems insignificant. It same things like when we see ant beneath our feet and deem their life insignificant. Phylosophy & science are facinating idea that everyone should have the right to know. Do some reading, learn stuff build your knowledge & take in what useful to you. The worst things human can be is to be ignorant of all things other than their own view. Some ppl take their view to the extream & this is never a good thing.
Approaching it practically here, wouldn't the reason you saw yourself dying of old age or some incident is because of what you will do(in response to or not) and what happens after seeing it. It'd be like; "The reason I'm still alive now is because I have no balls to drink cyanide and shoot myself, I thought about it but..." or something like that. In that world where future viewing is possible, it will also have the governing mechanism for those events to be made possible, right? It will be part of their science and not be treated as supernatural(may take a while).
Man.. The ending was just.. Out of this world (pun intended) :,) such a powertul beautiful scene and music. Making everyone realize this whole time these "flashbacks" were just memories of her future family, future conversations, future teachings all laid out. Of course this was probably already figured out by some people earlier in the movie but just laying it all out to make sure everyone got it like they did was amazing

BlownMacTruck I just thought it was entertaining. Liked it way more then arrival
Angry - Vault - Inhabitant Its ploy is silly and character development is minimal at best; there’s practically no difference between any of the characters at the beginning through to the end. It’s mostly spectacle, with little actual meat.
This was a highly original alien flick.Very refreshing to see creativity like this on the big screen.
Yeah, super creative!
This was a great movie and was extremely underrated
it wasn't - the majority of audience felt patronised and cheated by the editing trick that opened the story with flash backs - which were really flash forwards but only possible after she encountered the hoptopods!

There were only two things humans were better at than the heptopods
Killing: this breaks down into two possiblilities as to why the heptopods need our help they either need help killing an even more violent race than humans or they need to prevent humans from killing the heptopods 3000 years in the future.
Or they see all the steps of the problem being solved simultaneously, yet algebra requires sequential solving.
huh thanks for clarifying this up for me
Wow...

Your not alone man. It's a great movie
I'm just after watching it and loved it. It also conveys the dangers of language if we fail to understand each other. If communications fail, violence will follow it.
Well I suggest we work on communicating with other humans, from other nations, and cultures. That's a good start, eh?
Jackie Carranco, why don't you apply those skills now, instead of waiting for aliens to arrive!
Best we can do is hope we get the good types you speak of that want to connect grow and share together first and not the bad ones that want to kill every thing they find like the Independence Day aliens. The scary part is wondering which one will we encounter first.
This was a visually stunning film. Which is directed by the same man who did Blade Runner 2049.
Indeed!
wtf
Please, I figured that movie would be banned by our 74th president last year. But she instead endorsed it. Strange that she'd endorse an almost century old movie.
Gipsy Danger And Sicario, another great one
Just wait for Dune.
Can you imagine what it would feel like to be able to think of a story this original and compelling? Such a good movie
My thought exactly. Her body is present “here” but the time she experience could be anywhere..
Well that would spoil the betting industry
Possessing knowledge of future events would not change anything. In a truly deterministic universe, we would still be bound by one path. Louise knew her daughter would die and was powerless to stop it.
GODZILLA godzilla but knowing the result of a football match would make betting on the match pointless. As it will happen and nothing will change the result
yh but if they could see the result why would they even bother to play the match lol all competitive sport would be pointless
We seriously need more sci-fi/cosmic horror movies in the industry.

I found it interesting how Louise’s husband- a smart individual like her - couldn’t learn the alien language too and see into the future.
Arrival, Annihilation and Interstellar are probably the best movies I’ve ever seen.

Learn the language and see 3000 years into the future
This movie provoked a deep emotional reaction in me. A movie has never made me feel this way before. I will always love it.
Very underrated comment that makes perfect sense
I've always been a fan of hard science fiction so I loved this movie. My brother was just confused about why the aliens came to earth

They said they came because the humans help them in 3000 years.
@@jeffbrownme2 They can see the past and future. Humans are needed in their future but the humans couldnt get to that point unless they went back and taught them the language to communicate. xX Valtiel Xx I thought similar.

Denis Villeneuve's Arrival is a thought provoking and emotional cerebral thriller, a mystery, like first contact itself. It's not about the Aliens, it's about us, mankind, our perceptions, how we view ourselves and deal with each other. I think it’s interesting that we humans still feel like the most alien-looking thing is a squid or octopus. It is possible they would be floating in their own atmosphere though and the gas is an artificial version.
People just aren't creative anymore, like Lovecraft or how some of those "angels" are supposed to look.
Bunch of floating eyes with giant ass wing like things, I think I'd take the squid like creature before that mind fuck of a being
The heptapods were neither squid nor octopus, but more like a hybrid between a humanoid and tentacle esque being
@@Tavis15ify I mean the depiction of those “angels” is biblically accurate. Smartly done. Your analytical skills and ability to narrate well has been awesome.

I hope they make a sequel to this, 3000 years when the favor we owe comes due

Never seen the movie, but have seen the promo clips. I really enjoy your commentary and analysis of the films you feature.
NOW one could say, well the future could not be changed, it had already been written in stone, BUT keeping something like that quiet and not letting your future spouse know is just dirty, it would be like knowing that you carry the "Huntington's Disease" gene and not telling your spouse and then you and your spouse begin having children and then when your child starts to display symptoms when they are 16 you say to your spouse "OH Yeah, BTW i knew I carried the Huntington's Disease Gene and, I was the one who passed the defect gene on to our child so now we get to watch our child slowly suffer and die and there is nothing either of us can do about it" How do you think most spouses would respond to that news?
tbirum I think part of the point of the movie is the inescapable fortitude of fate, maybe that’s just my impression though.

This story is underrated
That was an amazing summary .. I didn’t see the movie because of bad reviews but I was riveted during your entire summary ... new follower

Wonderful stuff, I really, really enjoyed that very much. Thank you.
I would really like to see a 2nd part to this movie. I’m sure they could come up with a good story line. Even if it involved different aliens or even The Borg.....ohh wow I’m going nuts being told to stay inside all the time lol
This is one of my favorite movies involving an amazing twist
You are Awesome! And Aussie to, (I'm aussie as well).
This film was such a cool film that changed my perception of science fiction films forever.
Anyway keep up the good work.
Amy is a wonderful actress. More importantly, she seems to almost always choose great scripts. She's not chasing the money, she's truly involved in the collaborative art of film making. I wish I could spend 30 minutes talking with Amy. It would enrich my life.
I own this film because it's extraordinary, so full of hope and love. It's intelligent and thrilling. A classic!
A video on the movie the abyss would be great
Keep up the great content
Great suggestion! will add it to the list now, thanks :)
I highly recommend the book. There are so many things that the film didn't and couldn't show that you will find there.
@@robertsgarlata7552 As is the norm between the books and movies.
The Abyss is, in my unhindered opinion, a movie that is easy to watch multiple times. Watching the bonus features is as enjoyable as watching the movie is. The amount of effort that went into making that movie was astonishing.
Just watched the film again after your explanation, so much more enjoyable..
I love this movie, I love linguistics and such so the whole process of understanding their language & the connection between alien & human was just amazing. It’s one of those rare movies that every now and then have me smiling happily for some reason 😂
Love how the alien bangs on the glass towards the end of the film like “cmon women we ain’t got all day fuck sake”
Never a dull moment around here.
Niat. Your videos are conscise, calmly spoken (so important these days. :), and a pleasure to watch. Keep up the good work.
Beautiful film and somewhat confusing first time around. But it all made sense and I appreciated it even more.
Great movie that was not understood many that saw it and probably still don't. Good explanations of some things I didn't pick up on when I watched it, makes me want to go back and watch it again now.
I was hoping you explained this
I'm glad I stumbled across this channel
The movie raise a question "is our life/fated predetermined" & if you know the future (experience it have memory of it) will you change it or will you let it happen.
A better question is can you actually change your future even if you know it?
What if all the decision that you make will still lead to that future.
what if you cannot change anything & your attempt to change something ultimately lead to the same end.
What if your choice does not matter cause your story already written & you are just going through it.
RexorCall Skyline this is essentially nihilism. Using aliens “hygalian dialect” is the only way to get humans to really ponder that ideology.
Didn’t realize how much I had missed, TY
Thank god for this video I hated this movie because I didn’t understand the ending
Blue Shadow how did you not understand the ending it’s was simple as hell?
Damn them idiots had to kill the other big homie, RIP Abbot🙏🏿
This was honestly one of the best if not THE best sci-fi movies I've ever seen, it is a masterpiece.
This was an amazimg movie it had so me questioning everting but still amazing
