You opened the YA section and i was immediately flashed back to being 13 finding booktube for the first time while all those books were popular (I am both nostalgic and horrified)
I too was 13 and i was reminded of core memories 😂😂 There was so many books though I wanted to read but didn’t get the chance to and I’m debating on making a tbr of books teen me wanted to read
29:40 I'm not even a HP stan but "underdog who no one believed in" that is wild to say about THE BOY WHO LIVED literally the whole wizarding world believed in him with the exception of the few months after the Triwizard Tournament. He's LITERALLY THE CHOSEN ONE. 🤣🤣🤣
A few notes about Angela Liddon/Oh She Glows: She released at least two more books after the first one. If she has release any in the last few years, I’m unaware of it. The second book was probably my favourite. During COVID she came out as pro Trucker Convoy because she “wanted to see her children smile in public” or some shit. I unfollowed her after that. Part of the “dryness” of 2014 vegan food was the fact that the no oil/no salt version of veganism was going HARD. Went along with the high raw/raw till 4 movement. Thanks Freelee. The savoury oatmeal recipe in the first book is still a go-to recipe for me.
the hclf and raw till four movement back then had us in a chockhold and now we look back on that and realise it was just people showing their veiled eating disorders 😭
Hey Kayla. Long term subscriber but quiet lurker here. I’ve been watching your videos since the first closet unhaul & love your content. I’ve been a big reader my entire life & worked in the book industry for over 20 years, so have read a wide variety of genres. However, my favourite genre is romance. And I’ve been debating for quite some time whether I should comment about the romance books you have been reading and finding lacking. I personally find that so much of the modern romance genre today is not really “romance”. I began reading romances during the height of the romance boom of the 1990s to early 2000s. The romance books now are what we called “chick lit fiction” & I found very uninspiring. During this video, there was a romance book called Shield of Winter by Nalini Singh who is a New Zealander writer. That romance book series “The Psy-Changling” series is one of my favourites. It has a combination of romance & fantasy that you may just love. If you are ever interested in trying the series, the first book is Slave to Sensation. I reread this one at least once a year. It’s one of my comfort reads. I hope that someday, not even for a video, you may pick it up & try it. Singh also writes very good mystery/thrillers if you don’t fancy her romance. Just wanted to see if you may like to try a different slant on romance. Keep up the great content!
I agree that romance today is more chick lit. I haven't read a ton of romance, but I definitely read a few Danielle Steele back in the 90s. Also, I'm Elizabeth Lowell and Judith McNaught had a chokehold on romance. I have been trying to get a few booktubers to read a couple of Judith McNaught books - Paradise, and then Perfect - but haven't had any takers yet. Those books are so good, a little dated, but still so good. Another author is Iris Johansen. And she gets into some paranormal stuff, too, I believe. I really would love Kayla or someone to read some of these older romance books.
@ YES! I used to love Iris Johansen, Elizabeth Lowell, Linda Howard, Julie Garwood & Jayne Ann Krentz! Unfortunately they specialized in more of the historical romances, which I’m not sure Kayla would like, but even their contemporary romances might be a gateway romance for her too!
i took asl in college and spent a lot of time around the deaf community. as soon as i read the synopsis i thought “this is major icky and borderline ableist?” i haven’t read the book but from what ive heard, i was right.
The thing about the Goodreads awards is that you can't put any stock in the votes at all. I would feel very comfortable betting everything I have on the idea that there is not a single person who votes who has read all the books in the category they are voting on. Basically, it's a bunch of people voting on the one book they read or even more likely the one book they have heard of but not read. Book awareness is what you get from those awards, not book quality. It's a better judge of which book had the best promotional team really.
Kaylaaaa you have no clue how much comfort you bring me i LOVE your videos so much!!!! You've kept me actively into reading since i found your channel in 2020 you feel like a cool aunt that i trust every judgement from
Well, this was so so enjoyable! I think it's really interesting how we went from the almost naked people on the cover to illustrated, cutesy when it comes to romance, when the smuttiness level of them stayed the same. The idea for Horrostör is really cool, reminded me of an event that ikea did years ago where they invited influencers to sleep in a store for a night, The sorry girls vlogged it.
Re: the missing book. I just experienced this for 5 MONTHS! I could not find a book for the life of me and I’d completely given up ever finding it. The other day, while updating my library spreadsheet, I was cataloging my shelves and found it! For whatever reason, I thought I had bought a paperback so I was only checking the paperback section of my shelves. It ended up being a hardcover 🤦🏼♀️
I meant to write on your recent celebratory video but didn’t have time so I’ll do it now: thanks for all your hard work on making amazing videos. Not only do I really enjoy them but you’ve brought me A LOT of comfort through some super tough times (two long term break ups! That’s how long I’ve been watching 😂) So thank you. Even this morning you’re exactly what I needed to wind down and relax because I’ve got a lot going on and can’t stop overthinking. You’re the best!
This is a fun idea! I clicked through a few months ago and had a chuckle at the books that were popular then that have disappeared, and other ones that were not even in the top 3 that have had some staying power over the years. It's also neat to see books on these lists boomerang back thanks to tiktok reviving some old books.
I love the idea of going back to check into popular releases from years past. I read a ton in high school but was in college from 2011-2015. I read almost nothing for pleasure during those years. I imagine there are releases in the timeframe I would enjoy that aren't getting 2024 buzz
I'm planning to tackle reading all the books on my tbr that were nominated on goodreads awards since 2011 next year. This looked liked a fun video to do and happy reading!
You’re not alone in how you feel about Archer’s Voice!! Lots of other people got the same ick and your review is exactly what I expected when I saw it on your SOTM calendar lmao
53:00 the narrator for dark house has a pseudonym who did the echo wife (i don’t remember if you read that on audio) but that might be why they sound familiar
I have some footage I've never actually used of a week and a bit where I made every meal from a cookbook as a review so I was DELIGHTED to see you actually do the thing here! (Mine is from February 2020 so you can guess why it never made it into an actual video.) Because you mentioned wanting more in-progress pictures, you should consider checking an America's Test Kitchen cookbook out of your library to review.
Oh my gosh haha what a throwback! I read Archers Voice sooooo many years ago and I barely remember it 😅 but hearing you talk about it, I feel like I’d hate it if I tried to read it now 😂
OhSheGlows can be hit or miss for me but I LOVE her soups! I love the african peanut stew from that cookbook. I also love the empowered noodle bowl with the thai peanut sauce. I use it as a dressing for a thai inspired salad as well. I’m no longer vegetarian either but I still have some go-to’s from her.
Yes, it's extremely annoying. If you've marked the paperback as read and they show the hardcover in one of their lists, it doesn't show as read. But if you click the book, the book page is in the format you've chosen and shows as read.
I actually didn't know there was a business section in Goodreads 10 years ago. When I first saw Girlboss, it took me back but like you said, this book was for its time. The other reason why I found the category interesting was Ryan Holiday's book being so low in the polls. I actually picked up his 10th anniversary book (not reading the first version) and would say it's refreshing to see someone actually go back, revise and freshen up something that's been out for so long.
Oh thank GOD someone else had the same feelings about Archer's Voice. It was so uncomfortable watching this girl basically emasculate this man by minimizing him over and over again. The "baby boy"s and the "sweet boy"s were SO WEIRD to me. Side note: I've had a few audiobook narrators that sound almost identical, and it's driven me crazy trying to place them when it's the only book they've ever narrated. I.e. "The Annual Migration of Clouds" by Premee Mohammed
I love middle grade and miss seeing the finalists. When you were talking about romance being a category that has seen such an increase in diversity over the past decade, I’d argue that middle grade is at the top of that list. And with so many American libraries facing book bans and restrictions, having a place for parents and educators to see those impactful books is so important ❤
this is the first time I’ve read through the comments of your video and the people are so nice wow. You’ve built a great community around you and of readers, haha jealous! I usually just watch you and wait in anticipation for the next video. Great work, I’m so organised because I started watching your videos and you laid the foundation for me. I was a member but had to leave recently, can’t wait to rejoin someday!
In goodreads you can see the ratings and reviews through time in the book statistic section on the book page. There you can truely see which books stood the test of time.
I read Horrorstör just after I started working at IKEA in 2020 and was really excited for it. It's a really fun concept, but my gripe with it has always been that the characters were so one-dimensional
I wish you'd finished or discussed red rising! Not that it's great, just that everyone I know hates the main character SO MUCH and I love hearing it 😂😂😂
I also had to DNF Red Rising! I got through 50% but I really don't get the hype I haven't read Archer's Voice but I've always been put off by it and I feel like your review has cemented that for me!
I have not read archers voice, I had no idea what it was about, but I knew as soon as you mentioned it that you weren’t going to like it 😂 same goes for me, I have given that book a wide berth bc I knew I would hate it 😅
That 2014 Pinterest mood board is giving me life - I still have so many chunky necklaces in coral, pink, lime green and turquoise- everything comes around again eventually…maybe 😂
I wish you had read the Christina Lauren. I read it in my 30’s & I liked it. It was an early book for them, so we’re not talking literary genius. It was dramatic romantic comedy. You should give it a try.
Some of those books may not be showing as read because you might have marked a different edition as read. This happens to me all the time, especially on my TBR, I’ll have like 5 editions of the same book marked as TBR 🙈
Omg you should redesign some 2014 covers in an updated “2024 style” 😍
That's such a cool idea!
yes! great idea!!
iiiiinteresting 🤔
I LOVE this idea!
Yes, please! This is such a fun idea!!
"Some boorks are good, some boorks are bad." Amen to that.
“2014 has Black Lies…2024 has Black representation” HELP 💀💀💀
Absolutely dead but accurate 💀😂💀😂
She’s so freaking funny for that 😂😂
Yeah this killed me
I think reading debut novels from author’s you’ve liked would be a really cool video idea!
“Have I got a 5 star read from the goodreads nominees every year since 2014?” Could be an ideas
If Archer’s Voice has no haters then I am dead. I rage DNFed that book and I’m so glad hater Kayla came out for it too 😂
I pushed through, but I shouldn't have, should have dnf-ed like you did
I don't hate it but it was definitely overhyped
I dnf'ed it too! Was soo disapointed
‘Green and pink are my favorite colors’ (inserts Pantone Cosmo and Wanda)
Why is this making me laugh so hard 💀
😂😂😂😂😂
Listen!! The tension about the lost copy of Horrorstör is the real horror here!
Your hair is ALWAYS just so nice. Healthiest hair I’ve ever seen and always styled.
For real - I need a product list from her because my shampoo isn’t performing that level of magic on my hair.
Now you gotta do this video for all the years that Goodreads has been around. I think since 2006!
Oh yes that’s an awesome idea
the first goodreads awards were on 2011 actually, but yeah this should become a series!!
Uh yes Goodreads Choice Awards the Missing Years, 2011-2013
Second this and you can chose the books you have in your TBR closet
I love the 10 year themed video idea! And this one is so interesting, popular books have changed so much in 10 years!

The savoury oatmeal recipe in the first book is still a go-to recipe for me.
this is why we read the comments 🫡
Angela Liddon's fear of olive oil really messed me up in my early 20s 🙄 I love living in a world with flavour and joy now!
the hclf and raw till four movement back then had us in a chockhold and now we look back on that and realise it was just people showing their veiled eating disorders 😭

I will forever admire your ability to come up with such brilliant concepts for videos.
I’m losing it at the 2014 themed pinterest board, it’s perfect
Not the chevron transition slide 😂
I can’t imagine listening to Horrorstor. The visual of the physical book seemed so necessary to the story for me.
I DNF'd Archer's Voice with a swiftness! It felt SOOOO icky. Archer is a grown man, why was she treating him like that???
i took asl in college and spent a lot of time around the deaf community. as soon as i read the synopsis i thought “this is major icky and borderline ableist?” i haven’t read the book but from what ive heard, i was right.

The fact that you filmed the intro of this in APRIL is mind boggling 😳
Well, this was so so enjoyable! I think it's really interesting how we went from the almost naked people on the cover to illustrated, cutesy when it comes to romance, when the smuttiness level of them stayed the same. The idea for Horrostör is really cool, reminded me of an event that ikea did years ago where they invited influencers to sleep in a store for a night, The sorry girls vlogged it.
I am HERE for the reviews of the first and the last books in a series you have not read. I would watch all of them! 😂
i can't believe after i waited so long to hear your thoughts on darkfever you brought it up again! what a treat
I really liked Horrorstor. And I want to praise the book designer (Andie Reid) forever because the formatting and everything is so amazing and unique
Every time we cut to you wearing the teal & white jumper you spilled. Maybe the jumper needs to stay & you can drag the bookish world regularly 😭🤣
Ahh I was so hoping you'd pick up the Goblin Emperor from the fantasy category. I love that book. Great video anyways!
Re: the missing book. I just experienced this for 5 MONTHS! I could not find a book for the life of me and I’d completely given up ever finding it.

the review of reading a paranormal romance after 9 books is the absolute joy of my day. cracked me up lol
The evolution of book covers is fascinating to me!
I meant to write on your recent celebratory video but didn’t have time so I’ll do it now: thanks for all your hard work on making amazing videos. Kayla you are my favorite person on here
Yay! I’m very excited for this new series of celebration 😊
I got married in 2015 and my entire wedding was yellow, gray, coral and turquoise 🤣 It truly was a 2014 Pinterest dream.
I think Dr. Gay’s novel was a tenure project for her work at Perdue’s creative writing department.
Ngl reading the first and the last book in a series is a hilarious concept 😂
I'm planning to tackle reading all the books on my tbr that were nominated on goodreads awards since 2011 next year. This looked liked a fun video to do and happy reading!
this is such a cool idea! brb on my way to investigate this idea.
In the boorks, we all fam
Horrorstör is my favorite Grady Hendrix book so far. He's a cheeky bastard and I love him for it. 😆
Loved this video! So nostalgic. And yes.. my wedding colours were mint and coral. 😂
In 5 years I’ve never been this early
Red Rising is one of my all-time favourite books, and I'm so glad you gave it a try ❤
You’re not alone in how you feel about Archer’s Voice!! Lots of other people got the same ick and your review is exactly what I expected when I saw it on your SOTM calendar lmao
Nalini Singh (Shield of Winter) is an author of color! But also, yeah, not the best representation in the romance category. Really then or now.
53:00 the narrator for dark house has a pseudonym who did the echo wife (i don’t remember if you read that on audio) but that might be why they sound familiar
This is me just now learning you used to be vegan!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts in case other people want to take the step!
Yes baby!!!!
The Opposite of Loneliness. On the shelf forever. She was hit by a car and killed before these short stories were published. Crying!
I have some footage I've never actually used of a week and a bit where I made every meal from a cookbook as a review so I was DELIGHTED to see you actually do the thing here! (Mine is from February 2020 so you can guess why it never made it into an actual video.)

This floral top/ dress is GORGEOUS 😍
i actually laughed out loud at the teal chevron transition 😂
Oh my gosh haha what a throwback! I read Archers Voice sooooo many years ago and I barely remember it 😅 but hearing you talk about it, I feel like I’d hate it if I tried to read it now 😂
OhSheGlows can be hit or miss for me but I LOVE her soups! I love the african peanut stew from that cookbook. I also love the empowered noodle bowl with the thai peanut sauce. Kayla I’m screaming cuz I read Archer’s Voice yesterday solely because I knew you owned it! Can’t wait to watch your reaction to Bree and Archer 😅
I LOVE the broccoli quinoa burritos from the OSG cookbook 😋
The dynamic audiobook for Red Rising was so good! Idk if you tried that out or not!
I think Goodreads gets confused with formats when marking things as read
Yes, it's extremely annoying. If you've marked the paperback as read and they show the hardcover in one of their lists, it doesn't show as read. But if you click the book, the book page is in the format you've chosen and shows as read.
Having just finished Witchcraft for Wayward Girls I can confirm the horror is low but for me, the emotional impact was HIGH. Loved it so much!
I need a LALA cookbook ASAP
Another amazing video! I had very similar feelings about archers voice back when I read it in 2016. I have never understood the hype around it.
I read Archer’s Voice a couple of days ago bc of you and I absolutely loved it!!
I actually didn't know there was a business section in Goodreads 10 years ago. When I first saw Girlboss, it took me back but like you said, this book was for its time. The other reason why I found the category interesting was Ryan Holiday's book being so low in the polls. Red Rising is my enemy #1 I swear. And I DID push through it. Absolutely not. I feel validated by you DNFing it lol
Oh thank GOD someone else had the same feelings about Archer's Voice. It was so uncomfortable watching this girl basically emasculate this man by minimizing him over and over again. The "baby boy"s and the "sweet boy"s were SO WEIRD to me.

The review of the last book. Amazing.
Oh. My. Gosh. Wait, you need to read Lock In by John Scalzi. I’d loooove to hear your thoughts on it omg
Veronica mars is a book 😅 I gasped
Reading only book 1 and 9 of a series is wild. I love it
as a faithful bestie and romance reader, i humbly suggest Out on a Limb by Hannah Bonam-Young 🤞🏼I really didn't think it would work for me but it did!
oh my god that 9 book series sound like a fever dream
In goodreads you can see the ratings and reviews through time in the book statistic section on the book page. There you can truely see which books stood the test of time.
I read Horrorstör just after I started working at IKEA in 2020 and was really excited for it. It's a really fun concept, but my gripe with it has always been that the characters were so one-dimensional
So funny to watch you read the Experiment in Terror series. I read & loved them back in the day but I have a feeling I'd find them horrendous now.
I subscribed to you idk when I remember you just started and here I am still a subscriber 😭🥰
I am half way through Written in My Own Hearts Blood (as a reread) right now haha.
And I'll be reading The Cinnamon Bun Cafe next month! :P
“I just want to love a romance book”
“Oh.” - my family anytime I ramble at them about books 😂
your favorite colors are cosmo and wanda
Skiping eight books in series matter …. I laugh so hard .. Queen ❤️
"I get it, being possessed is hard"
I CACKLED
Teal, coral and orange 🍊 will always have a hold on me 😂
You should do something that reflects your change in hairstyles/colors
When you said 2024 actually had black rep in the romance category!! 😂😂😂
27:50 I feel like the 2024 style thing will be pink bows. I feel like there are bows on everything now 😂
Have you tried StoryGraph instead of Goodreads? I love the stats they provide.
I wish you'd finished or discussed red rising! Not that it's great, just that everyone I know hates the main character SO MUCH and I love hearing it 😂😂😂
Yes!! Just the video I wanted to watch today :))
I also had to DNF Red Rising! I got through 50% but I really don't get the hype
I haven't read Archer's Voice but I've always been put off by it and I feel like your review has cemented that for me!
I wish you read The Wayward Pines series by Blake Crouch. I was shocked to see it there 😂 I forgot how old the books are 😮😅
I have read Archers voice in 2015. and it was amazing :)) but still funny that it is so popular now
