    John Oliver did a bit where he spoke to US politicians and Aussie politicians about gun control. It's actually funny and also kinda crazy seeing the different way we look at gun control. It might be an interesting reaction. He talks a bit about how Aussie gun laws changed after the Port Arthur massacre and what politicians think their job should be. As an Aussie myself I'm glad the politicians at the time did something to change things even though it wasn't as welcome as Jim Jefferies suggests in this

      That series was quite extraordinary…. Incredible insights into (in my opinion) the idea of “career politicians” vs individuals who want to improve the lives of their constituents. One of the US politicians when asked what the goal/aim of his job was, literally said to be re-elected. His goal was to stay in power. Compared to the Aussie MP from QLD who lost his seat after the port Arthur gun laws - he said that was ok because he felt he was doing the best thing for his community. Not about power, about people.
      Love your reactions!! ❤🐨

      Kellbo Rose,
      John Oliver is amazing,
      to instruct or entertain, (or, to hypnotize or indoctrinate)
      via stage or screen, directors aren't just directing the actors on the stage or set, they are directing the attention of the audience,
      & Oliver is able to keep us (me) interested long enough to learn something about how our media/news/political circus world works that's usually both absurd & true.

      the purpose of the second amendment was to ensure that all americans took their own self protection seriously. there was never a provision to keep a standing army in the united states laid out in the constitution. the intent was that every american would be a part of a local militia who would defend his or her town from an invading force, should one ever come to our shores... this was the days on single shot muskets and cannons.
      that is obviously not the way shit went down, but the second amendment is still the second amendment, and getting rid of it will never happen. it takes 3/4 of the states to ratify a new amendment, which is what would need to happen to repeal an existing amendment.
      guns will be a part of america, forever. those that are unhappy with that particular paradigm are free to leave.

  • @TheRubeeRose
    @TheRubeeRose Рік тому +12

    The reason Americans want guns for protection is because EVERY other American has guns. The reason we in other countries don't need guns for protection is because hardly anyone has guns! Fairly simple really and unfortunately a Catch 22 situation ... but dear God - AMERICA you simply "must" start somewhere... BAN Assault Rifles for heavens sake! Do a gun buyback system like we did in Australia. Or even institute a waiting period when you first apply for a gun... jesus Wept!

      A few years later we heard what happened. Walter had left the pharmacy by then but the locals put so many flowers in front of the shop as we were devastated. I can still remember his smiling face when serving people. A gunman killed 36 ppl in Tasmania in 1996. Our govt toghred up gun laws and did a big buyback of high-powered weapons for ppl who didn't really need them. We haven't had a mass killing since.
    Horrifically, an Australian killed more than 50 Muslims in New Zealand a few years ago (and livestreamed it, which is beyond despicable). He chose NZ because he knew he could get high-powered weapons to carry out the crime. NZ has since tightened up its gun laws.

      That's not true even after the gun bye backs Australia has many times had mass shootings. A mass shooting means 3 or more people where shot. In any case stabbings still happen every day in both Australia and Britain, I think most Americans would rather have the right to carry a pistol than be forever reliant on the police. Hell I'm in Australia and have been to the city many times and felt scared by large groups of thugs as I don't have pistols, and my rifles have to stay on the farm. • @ashxf
      @ashxf Рік тому +2

      American here, and I have to tell you, most of us do want universal healthcare. We really do, and we're not against helping people. We want to do it. The problem is the private insurance lobby has our politicians by the gonads. They bought and paid for all of our elected officials who then get up in Congress and go on about how costs are going to rise, how you won't have any choice of doctors, basically scare people into believing all kinds of stuff that just isn't true in other countries. And it's not dumb people who believe it either. I'm a librarian, I work all day getting people accurate information and I have coworkers who don't know that paying an extra $150-$200 a month in taxes for universal healthcare is still going to be cheaper than the $350 a month we all pay for crappy private insurance that has lovely little things like "copays" and "in network doctors only" and HMO plans offered by the same company that offers PPO plans, but the specialist your child needs to see only takes the PPO plan but not the HMO plan...from the same company. So you still have to pay out of pocket for care. (my story) We have free education too, and threaten to take that away and people freak out. But compare free education to free healthcare as just something the government provides and some people simply cannot get their brains to click into place to accept it. That's how deep the private insurance industry has dug in. We do have a universal healthcare system, Medicaid, but you only qualify for it if you make under $30K a year and you have a long list of specifications. And it's administered on a state by state level, so conservative states basically have zero functional Medicaid due to all the cuts, and most people just go without it and go to the ER when they get sick. (In America the ER has to treat you for a medical crisis, whether you can pay or not. They bill you, but poor people just don't pay it and the hospital eats the costs. The state is supposed to reimburse the hospitals but often they don't) So that's what we're working with on *healthcare.* Try talking to people about guns and people flippin lose their minds. Personally, I think every gun in America should be rounded up and burned and if you MUST own one, you go through a thorough background check, mental healthcare check, you need at least 3 references to testify that you're not nuts, take a gun safety class, qualify on a range, and have a method in your house to secure them and this must be licensed and renewed yearly, like we do with our drivers' licenses. Suggest even that and people want to fight you. It's nuts. The NRA is a powerful lobby with a lot of money to spend and they do. There's a shooting every day in my city as a result. One happened in a "good" neighborhood right outside the mall. I was less than 500 yards away driving down the road. 4 people died right there in the street. It's on UA-cam, someone filmed it. Those of you in sane countries, never ever let someone tell you that you need guns, private healthcare or private education. Guard what you have with everything you've got. You can at least walk your streets safely.

    For rough, unvarnished truth, this routine is up there with anything George Carlin ever did. And that's the highest compliment I can give any comedian.
    By the way, that was not the reason the 2nd Amendment was written. That's a right-wing talking point, and a bizarre one at that. What government is going to write a provision into the rules that says the populace has the right to overthrow it? It's nonsense. The word "militia" in the amendment did not mean then what it means now. Back then, there was no standing army in the US. The new government had no money to keep and equip an army, so there was an actual _requirement_ that every male of adult age have a firearm so they could be called up _to form a militia_ and fight FOR the government of the US. The amendment was pushed heavily by the southern states (which had the most slaves by far) because the slaveowners there were terrified of slave rebellions and uprisings. That wasn't a paranoid fantasy; it happened several times. And of course, by the time the government could finance a standing army, the damn thing had been in effect so long that it was impossible to get rid of it because all those gun owners woudl scream bloody murder. Thus here we are, with every fucqwit in the country given free rein to own as many weapons as possible, of design and capability that the founders could not possibly have dreamed of, and which they would NEVER have allowed the populace to have if they'd known things would come to this insane pass. But just try telling Bubba and his half-wit cousins that. (Also, there's the whole childish fetish over the "Wild West" that too many people still cling to. They conveniently forget that back in those days, guns _were not allowed_ in any Western village, town, or city. They had to be left at home or surrendered to the authorities when entering the town limits, to be returned when the owner left. But being raised on bullshit Hollywood movies, people actually believe that there were gunfights in the streets at all hours, when in truth events like the OK Corral happened _outside_ the town. Again, inconvient information, so the gun nuts just ignore it.)

    Happened again just the other day. Guy holds up shop, shop owner shoots him and he shoots the shop owner, BOTH DIED.
    2 rednecks were road-raging in hillbilly pickups, BOTH fired off rounds at each other, and BOTH hit the other guys kid in the back seat. BOTH CHARGED and 2 injured children.

But you can own guns here, as you can in the UK. I have five myself, 10-22 TD, a CZ 22, a 12 G, 308W and a 30-06. But both the UK and here have strikter gun control and rules about safes and the way to store ammo and som on. But I have them for hunting and sports. Not for self defence. :)

    It wasn’t an easy decision for John Howard, I was never a fan, and the Liberal Coalition (for non-Aussies/Kiwis) it is the combination of the Liberals and the National Party (basically a party that represent farmers), so that means the Nationals weren’t that happy, and Howard went to rural places where, scared for good reason, wearing a bulletproof vests and there was not a minor risk. Plenty of chance of a shot to the head or neck. The threats were had to be taken seriously. I used to walk around the property with guns, and the Port Arthur massacre happened a bit later. I was a bit conflicted, because I liked guns, was concerned about invasion risks etc, but as I grew older, I have to admit, Howard was courageous. Oh, the other reason I was conflicted is my mother received a post card sent from a victim posted that morning. True story.

    Very funny. 😂 I agree with a lot of it and love our gun laws in Australia, but to be fair:
    - They didn’t take all the guns in Australia, just semi-auto long arms
    - Gun owners weren’t happy about the mandatory buy back, that is BS
    - There are actually more guns in Australia now than before Port Arthur
    - There are guns called defence this and that, contrary to what he said
    - There are countless examples in the US where home owners have stopped home invaders with guns
    - If you have a dog, you’ll be alerted to intruders well before they get to your window (my dog certainly will)
    - Biometric safes are very quick to open. Who tf uses a combination lock if you have the choice?

    TBH, I was a bit hesitant to click and watch this video, since I've heard Jim Jefferies in the past and he's turned me right off with some of the extremely misogynistic crap he's come out with.
    But in this case, I was actually finding myself smiling and laughing at him because he was 1 zillion percent on point. (Although, there were times when I didn't find him too humourous, making light of certain tragedies such as the Sandy Hook massacre).
    He smashed every stupid theory as to why American believe they're righteously entitled to own a gun. Which, as Jim said, doesn't have too much weight to their argument anyway, besides using the Second Amendment - which CAN legitimately be VERY EASILY amended at any time.
    Thank you for sharing this clip and sharing your views with us.

It was a total tragedy and if you look it up many certain people will say it was a government hit job and not just one gun man etc. Not true - I know the main detective that worked on that case. He told me EVERYTHING! In fact - more Australians bought more guns after the 'buy back guns' by John Howard was put into action. Just a fact.

    You’re not quite right about the reaction to Dunblaine. Firstly, it’s a myth that we banned guns - guns are in fact legal even today. What they did was ban certain guns and made the background checks much more stringent to control the people who could get access to guns. Secondly, there was a huge backlash to this at the time including well attended marches (Boris Johnson was a prominent spokesperson for one such group opposed to the new measures) and protests. The changes were passed and they did have the support of most of the population, but there was a significant minority who steadfastly opposed the tightening of restrictions

    Be aware that guns were not banned in Australia after the Port Arthur killings , but the gun laws were very much thightened in trying to make almost impossible to own one if you have not a valid reason for doing so. And rapid fire assualt weapons were the prime target, as all hunters and target shooters see them as no sane shooters who have any need for them.
