- American Reacts to Guy Martin's Most Prized Possession
I react Guy Martin's most prized possession. A Rolls Royce Merlin V12 pulled from a 1942 Lancaster bomber. The engine was also used in other planes flown by the Allied powers during WW2.
Guy Martin's enthusiasm for the Rolls Royce Merlin is palpable and infectious to see, even through a screen. Was recommended by a subscriber and this reaction is one of my favorites I've done.

He's an absolute national treasure but he will not hear a word of it. Blokes like him are a rare breed.
I think he's just a treasure of a person that is such a throwback where work ethic and a curious mind are concerned.
@@TheEclecticBeard it's not a throwback mate, we are still here doing the same things our grandads learnt from Thier grandads. You see it in daily life just not on the news 😁
" Blokes like him are a rare breed."
They always were, Mate. But we are lucky enough to be living in a country that still 'breeds' 'em !!
I once watched a video with Guy being interviewed, a good portion of the video was Guy asking about the camera guys fancy camera boom and being amazed at how much is cost. 🤣🤣
@@mickenoss I saw that too. He’s so unassuming, self disinterested.
The fact that Guy still works full time as a truck mechanic a few miles from where he grew up says it all. Absolute legend
'If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life' is what they say, right ?
He worked hard, did the graft and earned the money to buy the thing he wanted. You can't get more honest than that.
This one video explains why he is a national treasure, my mom is 90yrs old, hates motorcycles yet watches everything he's done😉👍
👍🏼
You get the feeling Guy Martin would not be bothered if he was being filmed or not. You could see him talking to a mate like this in private.
He hates the whole celebrity thing, early in his reluctant tv career director's tried to alter the things he said & the way that he said them.
He flat out said, if I can't be me I'm not interested & I think it's pretty obvious who won that argument😉
Guy did the "tour divide" cycle race, reported to be the worlds toughest mountain bike race, entered under a false name, wanted no press or attention at all, and did it off his own back. Great man.
Absolutely, and that's why we have the friends we do. They understand that we have obsessions, and they listen happily even if they don't share it.
Yes. You hit the nail on the head. He's unaffected.
He would be the kind of friend you could pop round to any day of the week to say hi and he'd have some next level shit going on in the back yard. You'd be trapped in a workshop of fascination for the whole day.
Guy Martin is a national treasure here in the UK.
who is he
@@ladyabstinencelevain8696 who are you ya melt.
@@ashleyreilly3627 can you tell me who is I really don't know probably because I don't have a tv. Thanks
@@ladyabstinencelevain8696 but you have UA-cam/ Google/wikipedia.

@@ashleyreilly3627 thanks I will
He wears his heart on his sleeve and has the honesty to love the child inside. He doesn't aspire for petty things that'll mean nothing to no one when he's gone, but to the stories he's been told and to the stories he will tell.
His energy for life and learning is infectious!
You hit that nail squarely on the head mate!
Did anyone else get a chill down their spine listening to that baby start up.
Every time I hear a merlin. There is something about them, even if you ignore their history.
Absolute top geezer. The sound of a Merlin at full chat will make grown men cry - I've seen it, done it. I had the privilege of working in Royce's Main Works during my apprenticeship, where they used to build those motors. Being the birth place of the Merlin, we'd get a Spitfire or Hurricane or both over the works at least every year.
There's three soul-shaking sounds that Britain gave to aviation: the Merlin on song, the Hawker Hunter blue note, and the Vulcan howl. Indulge yourself.
Somewhere on UA-cam is a video of a couple of blokes who have a tame RB-211 (think TriStar, 757, 747, etc) in their back garden. And it runs. Now that's mental.
Guy is hands down my favourite person on TV. I won't call him a celebrity as I know he'd hate that. He's just a hard working (truck mechanic) down to earth bloke with a love for engineering, history and mechanics.
Favorite Guy Martin quote:
"Top lass that, she's a top lass isn't she. Can she weld though? Nah, I don't think she can weld..."
He's a one in a million, A Living LEGEND.
You need to watch Guy Martin being interviewed on the MotoGP grid. He is that excited his mouth cannot keep up with what he is thinking and he is literally talking 2 sentences at once. It is so enduring to see someone with that much passion.
Guy is not interested in TV, social media, smartphones or anything else what the sheep of today class as "important". He is as you see him on screen. A proper man. 👍🏻
The world needs more like him
His enthusiasm sucks you in and makes you feel envious that you can't be like him .He's very much his own man and his love for what he's doing is genuine. He's allowed the boy thats in most men to come out .🇬🇧
Watching guy martin do anything he has an interest in is a joy to watch
That’s a great call between Dibner and Martin.
We’re based near the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and sometimes get buzzed by the Lancaster, always an incredible moment. That sound...
I’m a restoration volunteer at an Air Museum, he’d love our workshop when the engines are being rebuilt
Where I live and work I'm not far from Duxford airfield which is an air museum in Cambridgeshire. They have air displays in which they fly a Spitfire, before the main day they practice the display. I have loss count over the years the amount of times I've either just stopped what I'm doing or even pulled my car over switched off the engine and got out just to listen and watch this magnificent piece of historical machinery it just brings joy to my heart. Its hard to describe the feeling of this lump of metal and wires brings to me I think knowing the history and still having my mother who lived through the war and she can remember seeing them when they were needed brings it home
'Speed with guy martin' is an amazing series where he tries to beat the speed record in different vehicles. Definitely worth a watch!
The engine that won the battle of Britain
That engine won the war! Was in many other aircraft of ww2
@@stu-j it is absolutely crazy when you think about it like that. Think about all of the operations of ww2 and it had a part to play. What an amazing beast that is 😍
It won the battle of Europe
@@shaunportlock4924 and it was used by the British, Polish, czechs, French, Americans and probably even more nationalities. It was used in aircraft and tanks. In the air and on ground. I never knew I wanted one until now.
Read the book wings on my sleeve by Eric winkle Brown .a former pilot an test pilot in ww2 .still holds the most carrier landings record .a amazing story flew every single aircraft in ww2 .just a amazing man and even better story .
We love Guy. He's a wonder and a very brave one at that.
I grew up next to RAF Northolt which is where all the WW2 planes like spitfires, hurricanes and Lancaster Bombers would gather before a flyover in London. Once you hear a Merlin engine you'll never forget it. It sounds like nothing else. It sounds like victory after struggle. Makes me feel proud to be a Brit. ✌️♥️🇬🇧
The unalloyed delight just shines through, and with that growl from the Merlin you can see why! 15 or so years ago (maybe 20?) I was playing village cricket when the game, without anyone saying anything, just stopped. We all looked up and tracked a sole aircraft as it flew past and vanished into the haze. We had all heard the engine and as one did what almost any Englishman will do - look for the aircraft. I have known games to be delayed for many reasons but never before "Spitfire stopped play" :)
Those engines hold a special place in UK history.
Although the Rolls Royce Griffon equally holds that place but gets forgotten about.
@@ianvincent4911 no it doesn't, everyone forgets it. The merlin powered the aircraft which won the battle of britain, flew the dambuster raid, flew in mosquito's, spitfires, hurricanes, lancasters and several other aircraft. The griffen was end of the war and mainly in spits, which only flew a few more years because by the time it was produced, we had flying jets going into service.
@@christianbuczko1481 It's not actually a shame the war ended when it did, but another 6 months and the Merlin would have been flying again over the Pacific in the DH Hornet, which was one of the best piston aircraft ever produced but didn't actually see service until Korea, by which time it was obsolete but still performed very well.
@@christianbuczko1481 The Griffon powered Mk XII Spitfire came into service in 1942 and allowed it to compete with the FW190. Plans to fit the Griffon to the Spitfire were first produced in 1939. Without the Griffon, the spitfire would not have become the air superiority fighter for the Battle for Europe.
Guy Martin is one of the UKs most prized possessions.
Lovely chap.
One that puts Great into Britain
guy martin builds a spitfire is a must see
Someone I know is building one ;o)))
@@lotuselise4432 Except he didn't build it, he rocked up and put a few rivets in. Which i think is quite disrespectful to the years that the true engineers put in to get it back in the air.
@@squidword64 Yeah but if you watch it he doesn't take much credit for it. He has total appreciation for the folks doing it. It's the people on the TV company that have named it.
@@andrewcharlton4053 I realise that, it's the folks who are Guy fans who think he's the bee's knee's and just don't realise the thousands of hours it take to restore these pieces of history. It just frustrates me.
@@squidword64 fans and stans are always like that, best just to leave them be since you can't ever reason with them.
Guy Martin is like the new age Fred Dibnah. Guy loves a good cup of tea first and foremost.
its the fasination for engineering and the skills of long gone by that they both love
Imagine if they both met up and made a TV Programme!
@@bigmull I’d be quite impressed seeing as how Fred passed away several years ago now. They both have/had the makings of genuinely nice guys that could easily turn the non mechanical of people into an engineering enthusiasts.

I absolutley agree with Guy, the Rolls Royce Merlin engine is a thing of beauty as well as a master piece of engineering add to that the historical context of Spitfires /Hurricanes and Lancaster bombers that used these engines and you have an absolute bona fide ICON of engineering . AND in my humble opinion Guy Martin should have a knighthood by now , he definately deserves one more than your average celebrity or useless overpaid footballer that has already been honoured by the Queen . .

Jay Lenno also has a merlin engine in his garage but Guy got to help renovate a spitfire and fly in one lucky dude.
It’s a wonderful sound. We get spitfires, hurricanes and mustangs flying over us quite regularly. Occasionally in formation and even more occasionally a Lancaster will come over with them. Usually when I’m having a pee and looking out the bathroom window anyway. I tend to miss the bowl when this happens.
Guy Martin & the mighty "Vulcan" bomber.
Its people like him that advance our country we need more like him blokes like fred dibnah
Guy is a kinda "Fred with an adrenaline addiction"
He's pure genius and a properly good guy.
Oh definitely, I mean Fred was happiest when he was moving at about 4mph :)))).

I think Fred up those chimneys etc showed he had an adrenaline addiction.
Guy Martin...a modern day “ Backyard” Mechanic.......as Fred Dibnah would say 👍🇮🇲
You beat me to it There's not so many of us left now, I'm nearly 70, which is probably younger than the machinery I started on.
I live in southern Italy now on my old boat, I've been lucky enough to find two old boys in a little workshop, ancient machinery but between us we can fix anything.
That's exactly true just love engines and how things are made

Guy Martin, an “old school” hero of mine. Check out his other numerous achievements. Apart from the TT successes, world record speed cycling, fastest “wall of death” motorcycling etc etc.
He never really did well at the IOM TT, he was however very successful at the UGP which is tighter and faster racing.
He actually did amazingly well at the TT with second being his highest place, I think that's a remarkable achievement, it's commonly said he's the best rider never to win a TT, he's also been on for a couple of wins when he's had mechanical failure
there is a factory near me that rebuilds Spitfires and we often hear those Merlin engines when they fly over my house.
it's an amazing sound
THe sound of a Merlin is instantly recognisable.
Apparently my Uncle built a do it yourself aircraft kit just after WWII, there was a bit of a craze for this kind of thing at the time. He built it in the only space he had large enough- his attic, intending to break it down into sections when complete, to bring it outside. When he eventually fitted the engine he decided to test run it, and succeeded in blowing the whole roof into the back garden! As a final insult the design was refused an airworthy certificate due in part to its single cylinder unreliable engine so he would never have been allowed to fly it anyway! Great video as usual.
Your Uncle sounds like a great guy.
Would love to meet him and share a pint or two.
If you've just finished putting an engine together, of course you're wanting to see if it works.....
@@richieb7692 Reminds me of the scene in "Secondhand Lions" when he builds a plane as the other two sit and watch. HaHa

Guy Martin is one of the most straight up blokes you will ever meet.
The Guy Martin show with the recreation of a First World War Tank is really good.
Guy Martin is lorry mechanic here In Grimsby, he’s a former TT rider and tv personality breaking several records. The Rolls Royce Merlin Engine was used in The Spitfire, Hurricane, Mosquito, Lancaster bomber and the P51 Mustang. There was two RAF bases in the area during WW2 RAF Kirmington now Humberside International Airport and RAF Waltham what would have been Grimsby’s own airport before the Austrian corporal kicked off.
He sure is im from grimsby aswell him and Tommy turgoose are probably the most famous people from g.y.
@@davesmith8620 Actresses Patricia Hodge and Julie Peasgood are also from Grimsby, Sir John Hurt lived in Grimsby before becoming an actor.
I didn't know about them cheers mate.
Not forgetting the Defiant, Battle, Beaufighter Mk2, Halifax, Whitley, Fulmar, Bouchon (Spanish built ME109), and a few others. Truly an engine for all seasons.
I used to live near bentwaters base in Suffolk, one day whilst out on my cycle cross fixie riding down a forest path Carolyn Grace in her rare twin seater spit barrel rolled it following the line of the path perfectly then climbed to dance with the clouds..... with a tear in my eye I murmured “ thank you”........
Her husband saved that Spitfire from an Irish museum and rebuilt it but he was tragically killed in a road traffic crash. Caroline who already had her biplane licence decided she would continue with the 'Grace Spitfire', converted to the Spit and flew it. Her son now flies it with Air Leasing Caroline's company.
Mad as a march hare but you gotta like him.
Gotta love him. He's a national treasure and damn clever.
Guy is an absolute legend. And he's from my small, pokey little town of Grimsby (the original one)!
I don't know if Guy and Fred ever met face to face but damn if they ever meet up in the next life that would be a meeting for the age's.
You can take the guy out of the workshop but you can’t take the workshop out of guy. Great reaction brother. Putting the latest increased power rolls Royce merlin engine in the chassis of the P51 Mustang in my opinion was the greatest engineering collaboration between the U.K. 🇬🇧 and the USA 🇺🇸. That machine was thunder.
Channel: 4, one of the main TV Channels in the U.K. has made quite a few Series of hour long episodes featuring Guy Martin, being Guy Martin in whatever situation the Series finds him in. Whether that be, taking on World Record Challenges, or just observing and participating in the foreign cultures and engineering of: India, Japan, China and Russia so far.
Excerpts from some of these series can be found on the UA-cam Channel: Guy Martin Proper, if you haven’t discovered it yet.
When Guy went to Japan, he helped make a Samurai sword with a master. The master said he would have employed him. James May also did the same thing (same master too), in his Japan series. The master stopped him for helping any further, after the first attempts. James is a enthusiastic tinkerer.
How he took on a barge, did it up while going down a canal and making things to go with the barge...some years ago..Now look at him. An Amazing human 😇😚😇

having heard this running in the flesh at a show, I can confirm it is magnificent! My dad had been speaking to Guy earlier in the day ( not realising who he was, but just as a bloke who had a Merlin) as my dad shares his enthusiasm for a Merlin engine ( my dad also wanted to have one in his front room back in the day after seeing one in pieces in the middle of a scrap yard in the early 70's but would've taken weeks to get to it and get it out). Dad was beaming from ear to ear once it was started and said didn't want it to end. Guy turned to dad and gave him a trademark 'did ya like that??' and had a massive grin.
Phenomenal to watch & hear. Great to see your appreciation for someone who’s becoming a British National Treasure. Can’t think of anyone who dislikes Guy. His enthusiasm is infectious. Best wishes 👍
Guy comes from my Country Lincolnshire AKA Bomber County was home to about 40 ish Bomber Command station For RAF and Alied Bomber crews just Down the road from him RAF Binbrook was the set for Memphis Bell. In 1990
He is the Steve Irwin of vehicles, doing deadly things just because he loves it
Just watched Guy Martin's Lancaster Bomber on C4. This makes even more memorable. The training as a Battle of Britain fighter pilot was pretty special too. Guy Martin is indeed a national treasure.
The workshop Guy was on about is the Scania garage at Grimsby, just down the road from here. I was cycling today on the hills that formed the backdrop to this video. My ride also took me through the village of Kirmington, Guy’s birthplace and where he now owns the pub - the Marrowbone & Cleaver. Kirmington was site of a WW2 RAF bomber base, and the pub was a local watering hole for the bomber crews. It was also where Guy would often get ‘rat-arsed’ as a youth. Great video, thanks for showing a fellow Lincolnshire ‘Yellowbelly’ - one unfazed by celebrity status.
too hear the beauty of a merlin, theres a video on here,16 spitfires flying together, the noise is amazing.
Having now watched a few dozen of your reaction videos, you come across as a rare breed. A cool guy with an open mind. As a Brit that’s been living in the USA, I find it sad that so few Americans are exposed to true living and experiences outside of the continental USA,
I want to move somewhere abroad, probably the UK for a few years and maybe somewhere after. I love this country but people are so in their own echo chambers here while thinking it's USA and only the USA that matters in the grand scheme of things that it's time for a breath of fresh air somewhere else so myself and my family can get an experience of the world.
like all Guy does and what he stands for ! I live near Biggin Hill and when they have the air shows and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight comes over, the sound of their Merlin engines brings me to tears of joy. Sensational !
Thing with guy, is he's such a grounded down to earth bloke, someone you wouldn't mind spending time with
Until recently he didn’t own a tv or have access to the internet. I believe that changed when he became a dad
He lives in the same county as me and every tv programme he has done is so informative
He's admitted he's not a TV presenter & he's not ....you can tell Guy is just a genuine guy what you see is what you get. Love the lad.
my first memory of Guy was watching him race the IOM, he finished on the podium and they came to interview him, he politely told them to wait as he had to get a cup of tea first :) ever since then been a huge fan and the joy he seems to have about mechanical things is infectious. Some of his interviews are just amazing. When the Australians ask him about their tea, his answer is priceless and no one expected this I am sure.
Every now and again the UK churns out incredible people who have an enthusiasm that is just joyous to behold 🤗
Too many moons ago, for me, it was Dr. Magnus Pyke and Sir Patrick Moore...slightly eccentric I admit but they wanted to share ❤️
Guy is a fantastic character and as brave as a lion - he is the real deal.
If I had been born with half the passion and enthusiasm Guy has, I'd be a ten times better and happier person than I am now.
Lucky cameraman, gets to chat to one of the nicest fellas around. Could watch or listen to Guy all day, and his love of everything 'engineering' is fantastic. There is a short documentary where he goes to a workshop in Halifax (England) to make a mountain bike, well worth a few minutes of anyone's time.
In the UK it was common to have an inspection pit in your garage right up until the 1970's! My dad used to fix his own cars as did many dads of that era, I worked on my own cars before they went Digital with that ECU Bollocks! Setting up the timing, fine tuning the engine and stripping sections down is what I miss! I'm pretty sure that this is how Guy feels and loves to work on the old stuff. Getting covered in Oil, grease and having hands that you could light matches off, now they just plug a laptop in and it tells you everything. I've helped remove engines from ships, one time I shifted a 14" Butterfly Valve (All two tonnes of it) from the heart of a tanker to the deck using 2 Chain blocks and lots of balls! This is what separated the Men from the Boys, Guy is certainly a Man's man and it oozes from every one of his pores! Thanks again for great content fella! :-)
He built a bike for pikes peak and went there for the first time and won his class. Monumental bollocks down his pants. We love him over here.
i love guy martin! his enthusiasm for all things engineering, especially old school, is infectious. i truly wish more people could see his videos, as i am certain they would come to love and be enthusiastic about how things work.
For all the gift and talent that he has he refers to himself as a lorry mechanic as that is what he does on a daily basis, a more down to earth person would be hard to find, yes he has money, but that isn't important to him, it allows him to persue his passion for most things mechanical, even then he will build those things himself rather than buy new.
Once you've heard a Merlin; you can hear one coming from miles away. There've been times when I've been indoors and heard the noise and run outside to look for the source.
I'm just the same mate, the engine sound is iconic. Get to see a Spit, Hurricane or Lanc from time to time in Spring or Summertime flying over the house
the mixed grill at the Marrowbone & Cleaver is spot on..........
How can you dislike a guy that has his own Merlin engine!!!!
A Spitfire sounds amazing; a Lancaster is orgasmic!
My first introduction to Guy Martin was a series called the boat that Guy built. Brilliant.
You gotta appreciate a guy like Guy Martin is all I can say.
Guy is the modern day Fred D. He's an Isle of Man TT legend and multiple world record holder for different speed records. A proper lad.
He is an UGP legend, he never won a race at the TT.
Great comparison to Fred Didnah, 2 great characters and legends.
Nothing phases Guy , give him an engine and he's in heaven .
*Your comment about Guy and Fred (Dibnah) being like two peas in a pod was absolutely spot on Alan. They did meet each other on a number of occasions over a pint... or eleventeen, and had huge mutual respect for each other. At one stage Guy was besotted with Fred's old steam engine, and was phoning him up literally once or twice a week with ridiculous offers to buy it off Fred. At one stage he offered him £70,000 cash (around $95,000 US). But Fred always vowed it would go to his two eldest lads, who as I've mentioned before, now live just up the road from me over here on the island. But yes, without doubt, there was a healthy mutual admiration and respect going on between Fred and Guy. Both great blokes too by the way.*
He's completely authentic. The only thing I would say is that his 90 min TV programmes could be trimmed to an hour if he didn't repeat every phrase he utters. But I can forgive that!😁
Guy is a national treasure here in the UK. 😎
i could listen to that engine all day, beautiful.
Guy Martin is a nutcase. He will go full steam into any challenge, breaking records and bones.
When a man that's been on the inside of a fireball travelling at over 100mph tells you that starting this engine provided the scariest moment of his life then it sounds like something to approach with a degree of caution.
