- What is the best barrel length to get the most velocity from a 22LR firearm. A range test with 22LR rimfire ammunition, and a chronograph, and four different barrel length firearms.
IMOSSBERG BARREL MAYBE WORN OUT COMPARED TO THE PRACTICLY NEW BARREL ON THE OTHER
19 inch. Thank you
Thanks - a very useful video.
Good job!
Might want to coat those wall hooks with plastic, after a bunch of time removing and putting the guns back on the hooks they will put wear area when metal to metal contact is made on the barrel. Someone might be inspecting them and say "gee what happened here?" You say Oh I put them on steel hooks must have marred them up, my bad.
I can remember reading that 16" was optimum length for the .22. This was 20 or 30 years ago.
I believe the savage mark 2 has a 21 inch barrel. Not 19 inch.
Just checked the website for that savage model
Not a fair test ! You jumped from 6" to 19" and clIm 19" is the best as it drops off after that . You need a 14 or 16" too
Don't know of a 14 in barrel... If classified as rifle you would need a stamp for anything under 16 in. Ruger has a 10/22 tacticool w/ a 16.12 in barrel
@@jpb1231000 they make aftermarket barrels for the ruger 10/22 pistol version.
@@billyfreeman5803 10 and 12 inch barrels on a 10/22 charger
16" is the best actually your graph would show a decline from 16" to 19" if you had one.
Jacob smith I was thinking that as well. the American companies seem to use 16"-18" barrels to test. the mini mags seem to be able to go past factory started velocities if you use a barrel length between 18"-20". the European stuff like Eley and RWS work better in lengths 20" or more.
"Best" is subjective depending on application or person. I prefer a long barrel (20"+) for squirrel hunting as it's steadier and more balanced when aiming up in tree tops. I know a 22LR reaches full powder burnoff well before that point, but for my application, it's perfect.
There is no "best". The CCI Stinger will not slow down in even a 26" barrel.
in *some* 26" barrels, according to a study done by NRA
By the way, I just subscribed. If Fortune Cookie likes you, that's good enough for me.
+E.Kent.D FC45LC is a great guy. Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks for the upload. This video is one of the most useful videos that I have ever seen on UA-cam. Your data chart and graph are excellent. I wonder why gun makers don't put out 18-19 inch barrels in the .22 rifles?
Tyrone Kim well, I’m guessing that you’re not familiar with the Ruger 10/22 'Carbine'...it’s probably the most affordable rifle from the 10/22 'family'. It’s been sold with an 18.5” 'pencil’-barrel’ since it was first available. That was long before I was born, but that was my first rifle & that’s the length of the original barrel. I’m actually going to switch to it out for a 20” bull barrel in a Boyd’s stock...perhaps it’ll be less accurate?
This is a fantastic video. Nice job Jon
The Daily Shooter Thanks buddy.
Very helpful video.👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great job Jon. Really like the approach you gave to this experiment. I appreciate the graph. Interesting results too! Keep up the good work.
britishmuzzleloaders Your approval is very welcome, Thanks for watching, Jon.
I believe 16" is where the velocity starts to drop off when using standard ammo. If you start losing pressure before the projectile leave the barrel, you lose velocity as well. Kind of like how a 10" barrel is the longest you want to go when shooting 9mm before you start losing velocity. Higher pressure rounds with more powder change this a bit, but not drastically. No, a .22 pistol with a 4" barrel is not optimal. Also, barrels that are 18" and longer are not optimal unless you're using extreme velocity ammo advertised at 1400 fps or faster.
Interesting test.
Do you find the velocity drops with temperature .
Whilst manufacturers state velocity they give little away in other details.
Here in the UK we seldom achieve very warm days. The air is often high in humidity.
Excellent video. Thanks for doing the test and sharing the information.
Thank you. The pistol velocities were a little surprising .. I think the current 22 ammo is loaded with "faster burning powders" than the 40 years ago versions of same cartridge.
Great Video Jon!, Thanks a lot , greetings from Scandinavia :D
Thanks for taking the time and sharing this data with everyone! Great vid!
Jon - very fine video for shootology (we need to add that word to Webster's) indeed. I especially like the graph - says it all. I think I'll go out and get me either a Savage or Marlin bolt 22 - 18-20" barrels rule!! remember when you steered me onto the Mossberg rifled 12 gauge barrel? - watching your videos gets expensive…lol Best Regards
FortuneCookie45LC I take no responsibility for what you add to your wishlist, LOL. Stay safe, Jon.
Jon - You don't have the full picture - You see, I just tell Jan that "Jon with no h told me to get this..." and you and I can both wink to each other over the UA-cam and LOL...ha, ha har
Another thing is you used a totally different gun for 23" and older with maybe more blow by. So this is not a definitive test showing a 23" barrel is the same as a 19". could be the 23" had more gas escape in the breach area vs the newer gun.
Thanks for comparing these popular rounds in such a wide range of barrel length. The results are pretty much what I expected but haven't scene anyone else test 19" and 21" barrels. I have a couple of the longer ones.
Not very distinct in singing out those numbers. Hard to know what they are.
16-20" is good for velocity but the older 23-24" .22LR with open sights have a much larger distance between the front and rear sights = more accurate and easier to shoot. Bigger is better sometimes.
Great stuff! Someone did this a few years ago, and got exactly the same result you did. I wish I had the link. In the original test, he got his fastest results at 18".
Noise levels of the various barrel lengths would be interesting.
kfsrmn the longer the barrel the more the gas disperses so the longer the barre
The quieter it is
@@lookback2472 how much more quiet? I know your correct but wondered if there was any real data to prove sound levels. My 16" .22lr sounds like a .223 when compaired to my buddies 22" .22lr
Wow, did NOT expect that !!! So if you were using .308 rounds a longer barrel would be BEST, .22's have a max, then a slow down. CRAZY !
std ammo best is around 14-16" for subs 12" is fine all fit in the massive gap in your test lenghts ;)
FGYT Shooting if I was to redo this test , a rifle with a 16" barrel would make it more thorough. At the time of testing , I did not have one. Thanks for adding to the discussion.
I'm curious how the Aguila Super Max 22LR would do
What I see from these results is CCI mini-mags are the best all around ammo for 18" to 23" barrel length. I have a 10-22 Sporter with a 22 inch barrel and all I've ever fired in it are CCI mini mags. I've had very good luck with that ammo.
So what is the magic barrel length for a .22lr? Slightly under 19"? I've got the 16" 10/22FS
Just wondering how tight he barrel in the mossberg is? 40 50 years of shooting and cleaning could have opened it up. Have the barrels been slugged? Are they sporter, target , match grade. None of these weapons are of higher quality.
i thought mini mags shoots 1230 only how far is the chronograph?
Very interesting experiment. Does the Stinger powder burn too fast to add velocity over the last for inches?
Thanks so much for doing this comparison. It's very much appreciated.
You need more guns. The 10/22 is 18.5.
I bet that mossberg is extremely accurate
This compilation of data and hard work is excellent! Helps pretty much explain why the standard Ruger 10/22 is regarded as accurate with an 18.5" barrel. Global statements about a SINGLE best length need to be qualified with grains, velocity, and twist. Well done...I wonder if there are any addendums over the intervening years?
Great test, just in time for me. You see, I'm in the market for an after-marker bull barrel for my 10/22. I'm looking at either a Kidd barrel vs Volquartsen barrel. I've already researched and found out that a 16 inch barrel as about the best lenght for .22 LR. Looks like I'll going with a 16.5 incher.
Bpbby
you forgot to mention which bullets you were using when you got to the rifles
Lol. Don't see many of them TP-22s anymore.
***** It has become a favorite to shoot.
4:50😂 how can you shoot at yourself downrange there is only one of you😂
EXCELLENT VIDEO!! Do more please!
Great video Jon, the Mini Mags are the best i have in my stock . i Have Ruger Mark 2 Target thin barrel and Ruger 10-22 18' barrel , Ruger Sr-22 with the small 4.5 barrel .so that is very good to know the test results. thanks for sharing these tests
motorman 0057 I like mini mags a lot too. Since 22lr is so hard to find, I don't shoot it as much. Premium 22lr shows up more often, and Mini mags are a great choice.
Good info Jon, a lot of us have Ruger 10/22's @ 18.5" (Carbine length). It's nice to know it's close to the optimum length. Cheers
stanfordcoffee I used to own a 10/22, and I have always considered replacing it. Gonna add it to my wishlist. Thanks , Jon.
I found this video very informative and well put together. Ask the last commenter mentioned I do wonder how a 16 inch barrel would perform.
Great information!. Good to see, surprised at the 19" being the best.
***** I was surprised too.
good job thanks
talon0863 Thanks for watching.
It's not "best" - it's fastest. There are other factors to consider which may override velocity, such as quiet-ness (longer is better), accuracy nodes (slugging a long barrel blank and cutting it off right at the tightest point, wherever that may be past 16"), and accuracy in general (some say that longer barrels lower the ED / SD, thus increasing accuracy, by minimizing the effects of variations in powder dump from round to round).
I am also thinking that why the manufacturers of .22cal lr still producing 20inch & 22inch barrel. Is it for the accuracy?( disregard the iron sight.)
i am surprised that the 22" slowed down but i am not surprised that the short barreled guns shot slower but still not to bad for them. looks like my ruger 10/22 is just right for all this ammo thanks for putting in the time to do this test it is great info for all shooters
RPMIDAHO Thanks for your comments, I had read of similar results in the past, but I wanted to put it to a test.
What a great concept/idea for a video, was surprised by the rifle barrel lengths dropping off. quick question, is the rifling as good with the 23in rifle as the 18? just a thought, Great video/info Jon, Thanks
***** That's a great question. This rifle has been in my family since new, and has not been used a great deal. Mostly regular 22lr ammo, not high velocity. Maybe several hundred rounds, no more than 1k. Rifling is clean and shiny, and it will shoot to about 1 in. groups at 50 yards, if i do my part. Thanks for adding to the discussion , Jon.
Makes you wonder if ammo manufacturers design ammo not just for performance, but for performance in the most popular gun in that caliber. In this instance, the 18" Ruger 10-22.
Neat test!
voodoo304 You may be right about that, I imagine most rifle barrels are around that length. Thanks for stopping by, Jon.
Great Video Now I know why my 10/22 with a 18 inch barrel shoots better than my CZ 452 with a 26 inch barrel - Charles
Cr Cook The longer barrel shoots good, but just slower
Velocity is one thing and accuracy is another.
very nice video!
And the twist rates?
Nice experiment, Jon. I run a 12.5" heavy bull barrel on my 10/22 and get great results. Its on the newer thought that less length and thicker profile relates to a more stable platform and less barrel whip.
DaveinAB Wow, you guys in the Great North can have some cool short rifles. It sounds like you have a great rifle, that could be real accurate and still have good velocity. Do you have video for your 10/22? You could certainly post a link here. I'd like to see it.
I'll do a video on it!
it's a trick question, .22lr sucks lo,l l have the same savage bolt action
Brandon Maloney The Savage is a great little rifle, and a bolt gun encourages you to conserve precious 22lr ammo.
Great test Jon, thanks for sharing
***** Thanks for watching,
THANKS! Jon for your educational video. I've always wondering which one of my two .22 rimfire has more velocity for about the same weight: the one with 18.5 inch barrel or the one with 20 inch barrel?
Judd Tamar your rifles would be close in velocity, I would choose the one set up best for the task. Thanks for watching.
Wouldn’t have expected the drop off with the longer barrel. Would be interesting to see this in a centerfire, such as a 9mm where you can test with several barrel lengths. I would do this, but I don’t have a crono.
gapster46 I have started some experiments with 44 special in pistols, but I do not have a rifle in 44, for testing.
I have 4 handguns and 2 carbines in 9mm, but no crono. Sounds like you need a carbine in .44.
gapster46 Had a 44 Marlin carbine for a while. It was not real accurate, nor did it feed from the mag tube reliably. Sold it for something else. As I see it, a new 44 mag carbine is many hundreds of dollars, but a chrono can be had for less than $100. Just saying, LOL
If I ever get to do any hand loading, a crono is on my list of purchases, but since I can’t find any powder, I have not bought any reloading equipment or components yet.
You can find some nice Marlin 1894's (older JM stamped rifles) on GB in .44 Magnum for about half the price of one in a .357 Magnum. Forget about the new ones. Remlin can’t make them right. They’ve had mine for over 5 months cause they have no parts.
Wow this is such a well made video. Very informative.
RANDOMLETTERS1111 Thanks, this video was a bit more work than many. I was anxious to get it uploaded.
Could you recommend me a decent long barrel .22 single shot rifle for a beginner?
I have a bit of experience using pump/gas pellet guns as well as the occasional feel of a .22 and .308.
Want for shooting static targets like cans & bottles and eventually starlings, cats, foxes and rabbits.
+ihavedraids most of my experience is with 22lr bolt repeaters. I know Savage makes a lot of versions of theirs. Perhaps they also have a single shot version.
Cricket single shot.
Great video,my friend. Good info.
Greg Smith - TheShermandale Thanks buddy.
interesting 19" wins,good info Jon
***** Thanks buddy.
Cool video thanks.
Lou Flores Thanks
very awesome video sir!
Excellent video.
1957Shep Thanks for watching.
Bullshit test. The savage obviously has a better DESIGNED barrel than the mossberg!.
+Marek Sumguy Hey if so bullshit, why don't you take your time and efforts to go make a video. It would be great as i see your a pretty sweet keyboard warrior. Me i'd say thanks for the effort to Jon with no h because I've wondering on this myself.
