  • From a live performance at the Kean University GuitarFest on June 17, 2023, William Kanengiser performs "Reflections on the Dranyen" by Philadelphia-based composer Andrea Clearfield. Inspired by the musicological field work she did with Tibetan musicians in Bhutan, the piece evokes the sonority of the dranyen, or himalayan lute, through the classical guitar. Using bended pitches, extreme color changes, non-traditional strumming and percussion effects, the piece creates an atmosphere both serene and energetic, and ends with a faint heartbeat to reflect the fragile nature of this endangered musical culture. This work was commissioned by Mr. Kanengiser as part of his 7-composer "Diaspora Project", made possible by a generous grant from the Augustine Foundation. "Reflections on the Dranyen" was also chosen as the set piece for the 2022 GFA International Concert Artist Competition.
