    SO helpful, especially the ball management tips, thank you!! I‘ve just knit my first colorwork hat. For me, that was a good place to start. I am equally astounded as you when I come to the end of a lace row and have the correct stitch count😅. It makes me so happy, that I rush headlong into the next row 😊.

    Hi Kaci, I am loving your channel. Thanks so much! My absolute MUST for charted knitting is a magnetized pattern holder (knit picks and Cocoknits both sell them). It holds your chart, and a magnetized strip moves along keeping the current row underlined.
    Thanks for all the great content! BTW, I am also currently knitting the Alpenglow.

    Thank you! I have been catching my floats wrong. I recently made a few hats with Jamieson and Smith and didn’t catch a single float even on the 7 stitch spaces, it is fine and actually looks better then when I used to catch them. But I was doing it completely wrong🤣 .

    I love a cowl for a beginning colour work project, some of the best tension I’ve ever had has been in a cowl. It’s not too big that you have to worry about crowding your stitches on a needle but it’s not so small that you start knitting tightly.

    I’m brand new at knitting (been crocheting for a few years now) and “color work” sounds so intimidating but you actually made me feel like it’s not as bad as I initially thought. Thank you for that! I have big aspirations for knitting but have been finding myself intimidated by a lot of it. Wrapping my head around all these new concepts and taking care of 3 kiddos under 5 is a bit much. Haha.

    I love Jessica McDonald's videos and patterns. I am a continental knitter watched a video, I believe is Kristin Lehrer? Not 100% sure but she showed how to pick both colors so you don't have to hold the yarn in both hands. So much easier for those of us who are continental knitters. I also don't catch my floats.
    My first colorwork was Nordic Nights by Jennifer Steingass. I love her designs. I do love colorwork but I get stressed about messing up the pattern lol.

    I have two comments. I could not knit from a chart until a friend suggested that I take colored pencils and color each stitch in with a specific color. For some reason my brain cannot remember those symbols but I can remember them when they are colors. It always takes a while at the beginning especially on a complicated chart to spend the time to colorcode it but it is so worthwhile for me. Maybe that can help someone else who struggles with charts. Second if you are Knitting with more than three colors or even with three colors and one of them isn’t going to be used very much wind a bobbin. There are specific bobbins for knitters‘s to hold smaller amounts of yarn and they can just hang in the back of your project when you’re not using them and you won’t have so many balls to keep track of. I remember my mother making me color work sweaters when I was little and seeing all of her baboons hanging off the back of the Knitting and it works for me too. I hope one of these tips will help someone else.

  • @belindagritter1572
    @belindagritter1572 Рік тому

    One more comment. I always catch my floats after three or four stitches at the longest because it is easier to keep an even tension with a shorter float the longer the float the harder it is to gauge how loose or tight it’s going to be and for someone just beginning color work that can be important. I have had some pretty lawn floats at the top of a hat as the design gets more spaced out but then it’s not as much of an issue at the top of a hat either.

    Thank You, so much for the tips. My very first knitting project was the Humblebei?sp shawl that you and your friend hosted. I was fearless at that point. Although, I did not post a pic, I finished Feb28th and it turned out beautiful, even after ripping it out multiple times, hahaha. The reason I tell you this is because, I was so grateful for your enthusiasm and your, you can do it, positivity. Thank you for that.
    I do have a question, if that is ok. Somehow, I have been deflated. I can’t seem to let go of any minor mistakes as they truly frustrate me. Do you have any tips on how to be or when to be able to spot mistakes so that ripping back is not so major. There are so many patterns that do not give a stitch count at the crucial points it seems like - no blame at all :). I am so afraid of any project that is not just the regular knit and purl flat - like the half and half wrap (how long should it take me to knit one of these anyway, hahaha). Ok, this sounds like whining, but truly, if you have any tips for beginners or things you wish you would have known when you started knitting, that would be amazing. Thanks for your podcasts and the variety that you give. I always look forward to watching. Hugs x a million from Alaska.

      So on catching the float I bring the yarn I’m catching forward over the top of the needle then I wrap my yarn I’m knitting with as normal to knit but before I knit the stitch I pull the yarn I’m catching back and then knit as normal. it has made it where I will catch it on the next stitch when I knit and my yarns are not tangled then.

  • @maureenwilliford8985
    @maureenwilliford8985 Рік тому

    I semi-understand the reasoning for catching floats but even when you do you can still snag the shorter strands, especially on rings.

    I have a question about round yoke sweaters. How do you know it’s long enough and ready to split for sleeves? Where does it need to hit you?

      This is a tough one! I’m still having trouble getting my yokes just the way I like them

      What I’m doing is steam blocking it as I go and trying it in continuously. When I feel it’s where I want it so that it’s comfortably meeting under my arms (but not too long) I will separate.

    Always knit wrong side out! Put it in the inside of your work and pull it the same as your other knitting!

    I think you may have said that incorrectly? Dominant color should always be on your right hand.

      There is a great article in the description! The contrast color is what I chose to use as my dominant color. And it’s usually held in the left hand. The main color can be held in the RH. It may have been confusing what I meant by dominant color tho.

      Hi! Maybe I can help a little bit. My philosophy with insignificant mistakes is that they're part of making things with my own hands - they won't be perfect, these mistakes make my projects unique. Of course this will not work for everyone, and sometimes the mistakes are really noticable. Then sometimes we can make them less visible - pull the yarn a little in the adjecent stitches, weave a double stitch over them or maybe a flower, really, anything that comes into your head. If you need to rip back, that's okay. It's part of the process, though it can be so frustrating! So I try to avoid ripping back as much as I can - I recommend looking back carefully every couple of rows, so that you don't have to rip back too much if you spot a mistake. What can help you with ripping back more complicated patterns may be a lifeline. Basically you place a string in the stitches every couple of rows, so when you want to rip back, you don't have to worry about having to pick up the stitches correctly, they're just waiting for you. I hope that's helpful, have a lovely day :)
