    please ignore all of my comments on dubstep in this video as I didn't remotely understand the inner workings of the genre back when I made this. update, I have done a newer video going through Burial's other work outside of these two albums that I think covers his place in history a bit more accurately? ua-cam.com/video/wK8XDlG3F5c/v-deo.html
    I still stand by Burial being a super-unique/iconic artist that transcends particular genre labels though, you don't need to know the history to get into him

      Skrillex came way after. Original UK dubstep was such a groove and beautiful so many artists around like burial at the time. Also the UK jungle scene also madly influenced burial

    Burial, Jamie XX and Four Tet all went to the same music college in London...Burial and Four Tet were mates in class...Jamie XX went a bit later on...the collab's between Burial and Four Tet (Moth, Nova, Wolfcub, Ego and Mirror) are pure gold!! There's also another nice collab between Breakage and Burial...the tracks called Vial...the bass is...heaven! ;)

    In Britain we hold this album very close to our hearts. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like it. Night time walking home or at home when it’s pouring rain outside. Bang on.

    one of my favorite albums of all time. I disagree strongly with the stance that his debut is basically the same thing as untrue though. to me the debut feels a lot more conventional in its presentation, and not as tonally consistent. Untrue is a ten for me and self titled is like a five.

    • @bobbydeazy
      @bobbydeazy 4 роки тому

      I used to love untrue more over the year self titled is so much better for its percussion. Untrue seemed more commercial in the end.

    To get burial... You have to have been to a rave a house party and walked a few miles home.. It's a city thing. The ambience, sounds through walls, atmosphere, trains and loneliness. England on the council estates. The life its a beautiful nightmare, goes world wide as pain and hope attaches to all.

    Burial makes sense to be called dubstep if you consider that it's a less clubby version of the two-step dubstep that was around at the time. Compare his earlier stuff like South London Boroughs to some older El-B, Coki or Kode9 tracks.

      If you start with Skrillex and Knife party in order to define Dubstep... for sure Burial has nothing to do with that. If you take DMZ as an example, then you might see why Burial is engraved in the history of Dubstep culture.

    I love this record. When it came out, I sort of made the same "dubstep" error about its genre; I was working in music publishing and I think the term was bandied about and confused with "2-step", which is closer to what Burial actually does.

    You're confused as to why it's associated with dubstep...... because it doesn't sound like Skrillex? Are you trying to be abused? I'm guessing you've heard almost no early dubstep/ similar genres? You can hear loads of music that sounds like Burial and from where he's taken his sound and inspiration if you actually take the time to find it. He's even done an interview in which he's talked about the music that's influenced him, like Digital Mystikz, etc.

  • @DuskAndHerEmbrace13
    @DuskAndHerEmbrace13 8 років тому +3

    Look at the development of Skream's music from soundsystem/dub/reggae influence onwards to his harder stuff. Fans, American ones in particular started to want harder and harder sounds and heavier drops and a culture emerged in which brostep catered to a growing taste for sensationalist, extreme dubstep. Basically when American rock fans came in and spoiled everything for everyone.

    It is dubstep. He was around South London when all those guys came about/started to gain attention. If you don't know who I mean then you're an idiot. And this album is not really too much like the first one, at all.

    • @DrWiki-po1hk

      If you think Burial is Dubstep solely because he's based on UK then that's not a very bright observation.

    • @xomega.
      @xomega. 4 роки тому +3

      @@DrWiki-po1hk thats not what he means. Burial was literally part of the wave of producers who first created dubstep in south London, he was part of the origins of dubstep.

    • @DrWiki-po1hk
      @DrWiki-po1hk 4 роки тому +1

      @@xomega. Again, that is perhaps a poor observation to his art and what he truly achieved. Although Burial's discography adopts many elements of the UK Bass scene, his music is not Dubstep at all. His discography would later come to be known as Future Garage because his music was certainly a variant of Two Step Garage.
      You see, his style was unique because he wasn't a Dubstep artist. Far from it. Not only did he create his own genre within UK Garage, he also explored and brilliantly produced other genres to his liking. He innovated and pushed the boundaries of Electronic Music as a whole.

    • @xomega.
      @xomega. 4 роки тому +2

      @@DrWiki-po1hk thats where you're wrong. The "step" in Dubstep comes from the name "2-step", a subgenre/style of garage where the beats were not necessarily 4x4. Generally, alot of early dubstep was simply a typical 2-step beat with no words and the bits of reggae influence (the textured snares, sub bass, samples used, hence the "dub" part). Look up tracks like Digital Mystikz - B, Digital Mystikz - Anti War Dub, Benga - Skank, Loefah - Life Dub, Artwork - Red, or even the whole "Roots of Dubstep" album. These are all dubstep tracks that follow 2-step (or similar) drum patterns, that doesnt mean theyre not dubstep, they still follow all the principles that are generally associated with dubstep, and less with UK garage. Burial was no different in this, his music sounded very similar (or even the same) to these songs i mentioned. Yes "Future Garage" sparked from his creations, but that doesnt change whats factual here. After the early wave of dubstep, the scene shifted to use more ambitious drum patterns like ones you see in Coki & Benga - Night for example, those tunes were way more popular so people have this idea that THOSE songs are true dubstep and stuff like burials music isnt, and that its actually UK Garage.

    • @DrWiki-po1hk
      @DrWiki-po1hk 4 роки тому

      @@xomega. Sorry for replying late.
      Again, no. Burial is not Dubstep and will never be Dubstep. Most of his discography that he was mostly infamous for is after the initial year (2004) that Dubstep was pioneered, by which time Dubstep already had a signature sound separable to UK Garage. I haven't heard Roots of Dubstep album since years ago but I specifically remember it containing many Garage tunes. Those upbeat hi hats are a dead giveaway and you cannot say they are what Dubstep was and is today. The "Proto-Dubstep" scene is simply a scene of experimental halftime UK Garage tunes that was later transformed and refined into a prominent style of electronic music in the years afterwards. I explicitly remember listening to Dubstep such as Loefah with his dark, melancholic signature sound he brought to the scene, unheard of anywhere else, dating back 2005. Same with Joker, 2006, when he fused Dubstep with Boom Bap beats. Hell, Skream's most popular tunes, Rutten & Midnight Request Line are the definition of what Dubstep is and they were released in 2005. The list goes on.

      I can understand that, it's more of the kind of album that slowly grew on me over a lot of repeat listens and called for me to be in a particular mood; definitely not the kind of thing that particularly hits you right away (BoC was kinda like that for me too)
