I bought one of these last year, because my favourite guitarist uses a 7 string now. I really love how this guitar sounds! A great guitar for great price! ☺️
Aw thanks man! Yeah P2 forever, or any Periphery really, they're the only band that I've ever listened to that I can say I love every single song they've ever made. Really really good stuff🤘
Thank you so very much for putting this video up. I bought one yesterday, and I'd felt like I didn't do enough research on it to make an informed buy. (It hasn't been delivered yet.) I can see you pulling off really nice artificial harmonics with the default pickups, which is great news. Now I feel a lot better about my somewhat-impulsive electric guitar purchase, the first one I've made since like 1997 lol.
Thanks for a thorough and deatailed well balanced review and demo Some might’ve passed over certain things but this is also a good project guitar Found out what I needed to know😊
I got my first Ibanez RG about 12 years ago, after using a strat... and all of the things you said in the video is what i said! better access, more frets, hotter pickups, thinner neck! Ive tried a few other brands, ive been through 8 electric guitars so far, but Ibanez RGs are my favorite! Glad you are enjoying yours and I need to learn that periphery solo!!
I just bought the all black one brand new off eBay, open box, only plugged in once, to test it, and the deal included a cable and separate pickups for swapping with a wiring diagram and everything, new 500k pots and new volume and tone knobs. $180, can't go wrong. Ibanez guitars are a staple among many rock and metal players, like me, and the necks are legendary for speed and power, everything I need haha. I'm excited and can't wait. My first 7 string guitar will be here in like 4 days hahaha
I ordered one of these to day for a mod platform because I love the paint color. I plan to get a white pearl pickguard, gold plated saddles, some gold locking tuners, and some white DiMarzio Titans with gold polepieces
Very nice! I also ordered one to mod because I loved the color so much, and going a similar direction as far as gold hardware, but aiming for different bridge and a few personal preference mods. Pickups I'll have to research as it's the first 7 I've had in almost a decade.💪😤🤘
I have one too, the black night finish with the treated New Zealand pine fingerboard, but it's from 2017 so it's old enough to still have the 3 way blade switch instead of the 5 way, but it's cool bc I'm not a fan of the stock pickups, and my guitar came with a set of Dragonfire Crusader 7's so I'm gonna put those in and get a push pull tone pot and wire them in with that and get single coil sounds that way haha. I love the way the neck and fingerboard feel tho. It's honestly my favorite feature of the guitar, bc it is really so smooth and nice to play on
It is really an awesome guitar, especially for what I paid for it, bc affordable doesn't have to mean cheap build quality, as far as the woods themselves that make up the guitar. I did put locking tuners and a better bridge on it, and I wanna put a GraphTech nut on it, but other than that and what I already did to it, the pickups are really the last step for me upgrading it. I actually really like the black night finish so I'm just gonna leave it lol
I just got this guitar not too long ago for dirt cheap it was damaged in shipping and the neck was off bad when I pulled the neck off the body there was a little shim under the neck joint I put it in between the gab that your guitar has and it fix the problem but now i have a little gab because of the shim of course I wonder if all these models have that shim mine had to correct the neck?
Nice video man! This guitar really catches my eye compared to all of the other 7 strings in the same price range. I'm stuck between the Jackson js22 with the maple fretboard and this guitar. So far you have convinced me to go with the Metallic blue Ibanez. Thanks for the tones and input!
Sure man! Thanks for watching! One thought I would add though that I didn't mention in the video is that there is a scale length difference between the Ibanez and the Jackson. I went with the Ibanez since I like the style and the color better, and also I have small hands, so the shorter 25.5" scale feels comfier for me. But if you're looking for being able to down tune a lot and have stability and clarity of tone, the 26.5" scale Jackson could be a shout. But it's totally up to your personal preference. Good luck with your choice and keep on rocking!
@@andrewstump6138 Luckily the closest guitar center has both so I'm hoping to look at both in about two weeks before I make my decision . The only thing is the Jackson has the rosewood fretboard and I'm fond of the maple or ebony fretboards. Hope to see you post more vids in the near future.
Hi ! thank you very much for this excellent review. I have a weird question. I have big hands and so i am finding the standard 6 strings neck (usually 43 mm wide at nut) too narrow when i play close to the nut. I understand (from specifications found on sweetwater.com) this one has a Nut Width of 1.889" equivalent to 48mm (perfect for me) and i am thinking to mod it from 7 to 6 strings. Just for comparison a superwide 6 strings neck from Warmoth would cost me quite more than this whole guitar. What do you think ? is it a reasonable project ? thanks again. Kind regards, gino
Hi Gino, thanks so much for watching! That's a really interesting question; I actually had a little bit of trouble at first adjusting to the neck width on this guitar because of my small hands, haha! If it were me doing this project though, I would probably advise getting a Warmoth neck rather than the Ibanez, because you'll get a much higher quality product in general, and you have the option of customizing a guitar you're already familiar with. On the flip side, if you got the Ibanez, you would need a new nut, and you would have to remove the bridge and fill the screw holes and then re-drill holes and buy a new 6-string bridge that has the right spacing; and then you would need new pickups, probably some good 7-string rail pickups would be the go to so you don't even have to deal with the pole-piece spacing, because honestly if you wanted to put in 6-string pickups, you would have to fill the pickup routs, and then probably repaint the body and rout it all over again. And the final problem which really has no solution is the headstock is still drilled for 7 tuning machines, so you'll have an empty hole and your string pull won't be perfectly straight. So, I guess modding the Ibanez might be possible, but it would be seriously intense of a project, and still have some issues. But I think you might be much happier with the Warmoth, as it would be a much easier mod project, and the result would be just higher quality in general. It's totally up to you though, this is must my opinion. Thanks for watching, and good luck to you!
@@andrewstump6138 thank you sincerely for your kind and very valuable advice. Getting a Warmoth neck has been my first instinct. Then i looked at the price. The neck costs almost like an entire decent guitar. But yes i understand this would be the most sensible option. Better to start saving money then. However i have come to the conclusion that the neck is very very important ... but in general all things neck related ... like strings gauge for instance. I have now a cheap Ibanez Gio ... the nut width is the standard 43 mm. Really too narrow for me. I will look for some special sales of Warmoth superwide necks. They are gorgeous indeed. Thanks again. Kind regards, gino
I also was considering the black one but I figured id be more colorful and get the blue one, mainly cause I love the way the maple fretboard looks with the blue.
I personally liked the djenty and heavy sound of fender squier strat hss...they are very versatile. But I'm getting a ibanez 7221 in same price...would you recommend this ibanez gio7221 over squier strat hss? My main taste is heavier and djenty stuff
Hey man! I think it boils down to feel at the end of the day. I think it depends on whether you want 7 strings, a thin neck, flat fingerboard, and 24 frets (Ibanez 7221); or, if you want a rounder neck profile, rounder fingerboard, and less upper fret access (Strat). You can also get 6-string versions of the Ibanez as well. I find for myself that a Strat and an Ibanez 7-string both have places in my arsenal, because they're both so good yet so different, and serve different roles. Something to think about! Cheers man! Keep rocking!🤘
Hey man, I watched all of them reviews on youtube on this guitar and all are positive af so I'm considering buying it. Luckily you can actually play the thing but that's another matter haha. I have a question though - on 09:01 when you turn the guitar sideways you say it's a great neck profile but all I'm seeing on video is a bulky neck. Am I seeing things or is it really, as you say, better than a strat? Thanks in advance!
Yeah, I was just rewatching and I see what you’re saying. I wonder if the neck is ever so slightly thicker on this guitar when compared to a 6-string Ibanez rg, in order to support the weight of the extra string, not really sure. What I can tell you though, is the neck on this guitar is still very thin, and definitely thinner than the C shape on my squire strat. It’s also much smoother as my strat has a polyurethane gloss finish and the Ibanez is satin. I hope this helps!
You need to have a USB interface to connect to the computer. In this video I use a Zoom H4, although there are many options to choose from. Probably the most popular cheap interface brands for guitar are Focusrite and Behringer. Your guitar cable plugs into the input on the interface, and then a USB cable connects the interface to the computer. You also need a software for your computer like garageband or amplitube or positive grid to complete the setup. I'm sure there are many videos on UA-cam to watch on what to buy and how to set it up.
I just bought this guitar, the stock pickups aren't anything to write home about really (I am going to be swapping in EMG 81-7 / 85-7s into mine, the body is made out of poplar wood which is rather soft but is a good match for the maple neck which gives quite a bit of stability, the intonation on mine was fine right out of the box and I didn't have a neck gap issue on mine, the frets are nice and big but be forewarned, the frets on mine were not finished on the sides and were razor sharp from 4 all the way up to the neck pickup, this wasn't an issue for me as I just filed them down and rounded them off and lightly dressed the frets, the clearcoat on the fingerboard and neck is incredible thin and I would advise anyone who plans on playing one of these a lot to possible consider reclearing the entire neck, the stock strings are garbage (Low B is a 53 I believe and flimsy as hell, go for a good set of Cobalt strings for killer tune and sustain, or a set of Drop Tuning strings, they hold lower and dropped tunings rock solid), other than that, this guitar has incredible tone and RINGS OUT amazingly on the higher strings, you mileage may vary, I would strongly suggest considering the aforementioned above, however.
Hopefully you see this and help me out. I've been looking at getting this guitar, but just one thing I'm not sure of. When I look at pics online(mostly stock photo pics). Theres like 2 different looking shades of the guitar. And as far as I can tell they're only made in 1 kind of blue. But some of the pics look like a little deeper slightly saturated blue. And the other one is like a light sky blue or something. And of the 3 videos I see on youtube of people with the blue guitar, kinda hard to tell cuz of the lighting. So as far as you can tell, in person is it the deeper blue or the lighter blue?
Yeah I've seen that same weird thing with the colors, I bet it's probably the lighting. Ibanez definitely only makes one kind of blue, so I don't think you have to worry. While it is kinda hard to tell from the pictures, I think the deeper blue is the more accurate to what the guitar actually looks like. Also I think the picture on the Ibanez website is pretty darn close to the real color, so you could check there. Anyway, good luck with this, I wish you all the best!
That was exactly what my dilemma was before I bought this one, and I ended up getting the Ibanez because I liked the look. But now I think it may have been wiser to go with the longer scale length of the Jackson, but I’ve never played it, so I can’t say if it’s actually better or not. I haven’t played 7-string in almost a year now, so that may be a discovery for another time.
The b-stock Ibanez was $135, although now that I’ve had it for 10 months, I would recommend getting a new one or a used one from a private seller, the b-stock ones are not so predictable. It’s $199 for a brand new one.
@andrewstump6138 Lol, sorry, I didn't mean to come off rude or anything. I was just recommending :) I got this same guitar a few years ago (but black) and I love it.
I made my jump from 6-7 about a year ago with a schecter; and with a pickup upgrade it turned into my main guitar I’m debating on selling my 6 string for another 7 🤫
Thanks man! I still love my 6-string and still find it to have strengths that my 7 doesn’t, but I’m so glad I’ve added my 7-string to the mix, it brings so much more possibility and fun too! Keep rocking man! Best of luck to you!
Andrew Stump Thankyou for the response! I couldn’t abandon 6 strings so instead of getting another 7 I upgraded from a js22 Jackson to an rga Ibanez and I love it 😻
Oh, that color looks much better than I thought. Looked really ugly on a website I was checking out. I may go with this one. Not a big fan of maple necks, but I think the body color would help me get over it.
@@bearcow7964 the pros: sustain is amazing, the bridge is solid. Cons: the tuners and neck are sub par as well as the pickups are muddy. Switch pickups and tuners and you have a 700$ guitar.
@@edgyswordsmanmanga4051 I would say it warps more than my other guitars in temperature changes, and the finish is not satin smooth, more of a rough texture. Still even so I would buy it again for the price.
Thanks man! I have played sporadically since 2006, but I had kind of a rebirth of guitar playing in 2016, so I guess that would be three and a half years. I never practice though, and don't have any semblance of a routine, so I think my trajectory is probably pretty slow compared to most people.
@@Alleyuno Yeah, I think it's a great choice! I think if you're willing to visit a shop and get it properly set up, it will hold tune just fine. Granted, I will say a guitar with a longer scale length can be more stable (The Jackson JS22-7 is an example of longer scale). But really the trick for the Ibanez is finding the right string gauge, (I eventually used a .062 for the low B, probably wouldn't hurt to go even heavier) and getting the nut properly filed for your string gauges. Then making sure the bridge is intonated properly and action is good, and I think it should be just fine. Good luck to you!
@@andrewstump6138 Really, being able to take it to assistance that can adjust the guitar would be a great option! I will analyze all the questions carefully, since a luthier is not so easy to find in my city

The b-stock Ibanez was $135, although now that I’ve had it for 10 months, I would recommend getting a new one or a used one from a private seller, the b-stock ones are not so predictable. It’s $199 for a brand new one.
And yes it does come in black burst, I think with a quilt maple veneer.
Is that sock supposed to be a string dampener? Check out fretwraps by Gruv Gear.
Yeah, I'm a total amateur anyway, whatever gets the job done the cheapest is good enough for me :)
@andrewstump6138 Lol, sorry, I didn't mean to come off rude or anything. I was just recommending :) I got this same guitar a few years ago (but black) and I love it.
@@natefontana5757 No worries at all! That's great, keep rocking on!🤘
I made my jump from 6-7 about a year ago with a schecter; and with a pickup upgrade it turned into my main guitar I’m debating on selling my 6 string for another 7 🤫
Also thanks for the quality review👌
Thanks man! I still love my 6-string and still find it to have strengths that my 7 doesn’t, but I’m so glad I’ve added my 7-string to the mix, it brings so much more possibility and fun too! Keep rocking man! Best of luck to you!
Andrew Stump Thankyou for the response! I couldn’t abandon 6 strings so instead of getting another 7 I upgraded from a js22 Jackson to an rga Ibanez and I love it 😻
Nice guitar man😍where the guitar was made?
Hey thanks for watching! The guitar was made in China
Oh, that color looks much better than I thought. Looked really ugly on a website I was checking out. I may go with this one. Not a big fan of maple necks, but I think the body color would help me get over it.
Yeah, I’m my personal taste, the blue with the maple neck is a great look, I really love it
That blue is awesome. Can't get it here for some reason :(
Aww that’s too bad, I really love the color
Played that guitar at a guitar center
How was it?
@@bearcow7964 the pros: sustain is amazing, the bridge is solid. Cons: the tuners and neck are sub par as well as the pickups are muddy. Switch pickups and tuners and you have a 700$ guitar.
@@bohdankhmelnytsky9369 what would you say is specifically wrong with the neck? Not counting the frets.
@@edgyswordsmanmanga4051 I would say it warps more than my other guitars in temperature changes, and the finish is not satin smooth, more of a rough texture. Still even so I would buy it again for the price.
Very cool👍
Nice video, how long have you been playing?
Thanks man! I have played sporadically since 2006, but I had kind of a rebirth of guitar playing in 2016, so I guess that would be three and a half years. I never practice though, and don't have any semblance of a routine, so I think my trajectory is probably pretty slow compared to most people.
@@andrewstump6138 well you look experienced, nice playing man
Thanks so much! I enjoy it most of all, that's the most important thing!
Can anyone tell me if this model is similar to the QA model?
It is exactly the same as the qa model, with the exception of the veneer finish and the fingerboard material. In every other way it is identical
@@andrewstump6138 Thanks! I'm looking for my first 7-string guitar, and this one looks really good! I'm just afraid it won't hold the tune so well
@@Alleyuno Yeah, I think it's a great choice!
Okay, yes if you can find a guitar shop that would be great, best of luck to you!
Where did you learn how to do that? 7:24 haha nice job
Thank you! I learned it all by ear, and I practiced just that one lick for probably 3 months or so
Im looking for this model for buying if you whant
I actually ended up selling it; was very fun while I had it though
to bad im a lefty. have to switch all my guitar's strings around half of the time
I wonder if they have a lefty version of this model, I haven’t checked in a while
Rig sounds nice. Not that that’s why the guitar sounds good. I see these guitars are well made japan
Thank you! This particular one is made in China I believe, and not particularly well put together, but good enough for a 200 USD guitar I suppose. You would probably have to spend a lot more money to get a Japanese made one unfortunately😢
Uhhh... The guitar center website kidnapped me and brought me here
Lol, what?? 🤣
