CREEK MEN DEMAND STAKEHOLDER INCLUSION PIPELINE SURVEILLANCE CONTRACT

  • The award of a pipeline surveillance contract to Government Ekpemupolo, popularly called Tompolo has received applause by many in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta. But while others in the region are skeptical about the timing of what looks like a last ditch attempt by the Federal Government to halt the erosion of the nation's wealth, a group in the winding creeks of the mangrove forests of the Delta is calling for the inclusion of other stakeholders.

    This video is one of the arguments in favour of regional/local resource control. Let the natives control their resources and this warlord/we-want-our-piece-of-the-cake mentality would wither. If properly managed, the long term result would be fewer conflicts, more productivity, prosperity, and a wider distribution of wealth.
    However, the need for the FG to legitimize its resource exploitation powers would keep creating a warlord after another. Tompolo has terrorised them into a form of rent payment. Another gutsy fellow will try his luck. Then, another.
    This is why Nigeria will disintegrate unless the current political/administrative structure is adjusted to fit with our realities.

      I agree. But this are actually brothers . The same region the same ijaws and less than 60 miles from each . How much can u break a country into pieces ? If u give it to the vilage different street might ask for thier own resources country. Maybe nigerians are just greedy . The country’s is so bad that u have to award contract to a criminal to protect . Tufiakwa

    • @maye3244
      @maye3244 2 роки тому +2

      @@ikecosmas8398 You're not wrong. The so-called Creek Men are related to Tompolo. Their grouse isn't with Tompolo but the FG as represented by Timipre Sylva. It is the FG's choice to award someone they apparently see as the MVP among militants a rentier contact that transcends his hometown that is being contested. And that was my point: FG's CHOICE of a native former tormentor REPRESENTS a desire to legitimize its already legal resource exploitation powers in the region.
      If resource control had been localized, the solution would have catered to local sentiments, and would thus be naturally considered legitimate and therefore acceptable by the locals. That, of course, on the condition that it is "properly managed".
      Would Tompolo have been considered if resource exploitation had been a local enterprise? Probably not; either there would never have been a popular Tompolo or he'd be in jail for his troubles. But because of the current illegitimate lopsided structure, Tompolos are being placated, and that creates new ones.
      Question is: how many contracts shall we give the Tompolos of the future? So my view is that, although our people (Nigerians) can be extremely tribal to their own harm sometimes, the current structure only ensures that those sentiments deepen and our beleaguered government continues to seek legitimacy by "begging the owners" of resources through the appeasement of local strongmen.
      In the end, a kobo of the 4Bn contract would not get to the Ijaw person on the street, but our untidy FG would assume it has done something for the "people of Niger-Delta". This really is my point.
      Thanks once again.

    I'm Kalabari Ijaw. The problem is when our noble men (e.g., Ken Saro Wiwa) efforted to engage the government and policy holders writ large, they disregarded them and in fact executed them. But then our street boys picked up guns. Obviously local lawyers, engineers, civil servants can't control these elements because they don't do guns. And the reality is these boys are indeed standing up for the rights of the community and thankfully their crime has been limited mainly to infrastructure sabotage rather than violent murder. In addition to the degradation and neglect by the government and multinationals, the further problem for everybody, of course, is that this creek activity floods the community with weapons and and empowers the street boys into wealthy and powerful men who are not actually for any type of governance.

People are suffering and dying of air and water pollutions, local businesses are being destroyed. What a report. Kudos Arise News. Let thee government come clean and stop causing problems in Nigeria. We have had enough insecurity in Nigeria. I dare say that Nigeria will crumble if this imminent trouble is not nipped in the bud.
    Those men interviewed have a valid point. Get everyone involved and not just one person.

    Some senseless agitations what did they do or say when others where doing it before the award of contract to Tompolo...these are some selfish men that destroyed d amnesty program and used the moneys for themselves and their prostitutes....people should learn to respect and honour Tompolo many of them are driving cars and have houses of their own simply because of him. The amnesty came because of Tompolo and many of them used it to enrich themselves. And now they have started springing out again to benefitfrom what he worked for earn, if I may ask where were they before they awarded him the contract? And where were they when the federal government was after his life?.Most of them of were with the govt on that hunt for his life but they failed....abeg they should allow the Man to enjoy from his efforts.
    We need to come together for a Niger Delta Republic I guess it doesn't concern them on how to make dat happen when it's a bout pipeline contract dem don come out from their hiding....if were in our Country no body needs a surveillance contract to guide pipelines...no,not at all.

      Even if 100 Obi come,Nigeria will still not b OK,the only way out of this mess is for every region to go and govern themselves, split the country into 3 or 4 part, every region go and create your own constitution and develop at your own pace, then pay tax to federal, anything short of that would amount to zero over minus zero
