An outstanding lineup of entertainers gathered in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall to salute Dave Chappelle, recipient of the 22nd annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on October 27, 2019. The Prize, which is named to honor one of the world’s greatest humorists, was given at a gala performance featuring some of the biggest names in comedy.

Dave Chappelle is an internationally recognized stand-up comedian and actor whose trademark wit and sharp, irreverent social commentary explores race, popular culture, sex, drugs, politics, and fame. Arguably the most-touring comic on the circuit, Chappelle has performed more than 1,600 concerts worldwide in the past four years, selling out shows within minutes of their announcements.
Dave Chappelle could always make people laugh. Once he realized the power of his natural talent, he set some ambitious goals for his art. As a 14-year-old student at Washington, D.C.'s Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Chappelle crafted his stand-up comedy act out of the realities of his life growing up Black in the nation's capital.
ABOUT THE MARK TWAIN PRIZE
The Mark Twain Prize recognizes people who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th century novelist and essayist best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist and creator of memorable characters, Samuel Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled and outraged many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective of social injustice and personal folly. He revealed the great truth of humor when he said "against the assault of laughter nothing can stand."
The inaugural Mark Twain Prize was presented to Richard Pryor during the first annual Kennedy Center Celebration of American Humor, October 20, 1998. The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber and is televised annually. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception. Previous recipients of the Mark Twain include Richard Pryor (1998), Jonathan Winters (1999), Carl Reiner (2000), Whoopi Goldberg (2001), Bob Newhart (2002), Lily Tomlin (2003), Lorne Michaels (2004), Steve Martin (2005), Neil Simon (2006), Billy Crystal (2007), George Carlin (2008), Bill Cosby (2009, rescinded in 2018) Tina Fey (2010), Will Ferrell (2011), Ellen DeGeneres (2012), Carol Burnett (2013) Jay Leno (2014), Eddie Murphy (2015), Bill Murray (2016), David Letterman (2017), and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (2018).

Dave is goat man. He never sold out, he deserves everything he’s got. Love that man
Dave is a human being not a goat
Totally Bored op never implied Dave was a goat. He said Dave was goat man i.e. part goat part man.

"To Twain" Aziz killed it, got serious but didn't let it stick, fantastic pacing!!
For an Indian mom to
1) know who Dave Chappelle is
2) be OK with their son not coming home to celebrate a holiday that you know she must have made a ton of great food for
says a lot! Cheers to Aziz's mom!
His parents are so CUTE on Master of None. 🥰
Aziz, India, Thanksgiving - Okay.
Oh quiet down...His family hasn't been indian since..like ever. They're American.
Bro Aziz is absolutely sauced and I’m here for it 😂😂😂😂
Aziz killed it here with the story and delivery as usual and represented Dave with respect and professionalism still
Beautiful speech. The bit about "living every moment as if it has the potential to be a wonderful memory" is both a profoundly kind compliment and excellent life advice.
and ties in nicely with the kicker at the end
The delivery was immaculate.
Aziz love u man
Live life loud! Nobody is promised tomorrow, or that they won't get busted all to hell in a wreck having to suffer the remainder of your years in pain stuck at home. The latter happened to me. But I had 15 years of great memories with the best friends you could have. I'm the only one left, but I'm always smiling from beautiful memories. We always went so hard I didn't see a film or TV show the entire 15 years.
Thank god for humor and comedians
2:01 I wonder which son is the one that went to town on Kevin Hart's green room buffet, lol.

There’s a pastor-like cadence to the way Aziz delivers his stories.
Aziz would make a great youth pastor
A lot of good comics have that quality. Chris Rock for sure but it's characteristic of many good public speakers.

"He treats every moment like it has the potential to be a wonderful memory." Aziz captures the essence of Dave Chappelle so precisely, so beautifully.
Bobby H yo this guy is a creep. He had been in hiding because of a cringe regret blowjob he got from a fan. Sad....
Bobby Amdro he's a creep because she consensually sucked him off & wanted to exploit him over it?
Grow up.
"Dave you got a point, let's eat those mushrooms. To Twain!" 😂
🤣🤣
Finally Dave get's the respect he deserves
What are you talking about? He has been respected for years. He has been nominated for many, many awards. The man has two Emmys and a Grammy for crying out loud.
Lol wtf?
He's probably the most famous American celebrity alive today. I don't think you can say he doesn't get the respect he deserves.
This dude is respected for decades by people all over the world of all political standings and of all colors, what the fuck are you talking about
He has ALWAYS gotten his respect. Go look at what other comedians have been saying about him for years.
No ones talking about how damn good Aziz’s impression of Dave was! He sounded exactly like Dave Chapelle would if he had huffed a litre of helium
this is very true, actually-- the cadence is really good
this is how funny dave is.. the other comedians are getting all their laughs re-telling stuff dave said.
brown beast So true 👍🏾
Hmmmm..... interesting tactic. Also known today amongst the youth as "clout chasing."
@@NICKEYBLACK35 huge difference between clout chasing and telling a funny story.
It being a night dedicated to the winner of one single award I’m guessing that’s the point. This is not his stand up routine. What else is suppose to do. It’s supposed to be about Dave.
yeah cause delivery and originality are non existent in their stories...theyre just quoting Dave the whole night
Dave is the nicest celebrity I have ever met. Here is my story meeting him -
Me and 2 other friends were bar hopping around hollywood and decided to head to a fancy upscale hotel and grab a few drinks. We get to the small hotel bar and there were only 4 stools and about 15 people eating at a few small tables. We grab a drink at the bar and I turn around and accidentally bump into Dave Chappelle, he apologizes and continues on his way.
At this point I am absolutely stoked… I just touched Dave’s shoulder. Right after this we decide to grab a table and get some food. After eating for about 20 minutes Dave comes back and sits at the bar with his friend. My one friend chimes in and claims, “You should perform magic for the entire bar.” I say “There is a possible reality that I do magic for the entire bar… but that is about one in a million.”
The moment I say that my friend, Macon, goes to the table right next to us and proclaims, “There is a magic show happening. Do you guys want to watch?” They say, “YES” and slide over to our table. He goes to the next group. They join our table as well. Macon asks two more groups to turn around and face us. He then goes over to Dave Chappelle and asks him if he wants to join the Magic Show.
At this point we have Dave and about 14 other people in this tiny bar and I’m on the spot. I stand up and kick things right off. Dave Chappelle grabs my Rubik’s Cube and starts to mix it up and has the entire room laughing their butts off. He heckled me a few times in the middle of my set.. But when Dave Chappelle heckles.. You let him do it.
After about 20 minutes of me performing my heart out. Everyone gives a wonderful applause and Dave starts asking about who inspired me, how i create tricks, where I perform at, if I do private parties and another 20 questions. It was honestly one of the coolest experiences of my entire life.
20 Years spent learning magic and practicing tens of thousands of hours.. Sometimes I reach points where I feel stuck and not sure how to continue with my career.
Getting to perform my act for one of my idols was such an amazing privilege. Moving to LA I got distracted. I started focusing on numbers and what other people were doing. I forgot why I started doing all this in the first place. Because I LOVE IT!!!! Thank you Dave for reigniting my spark and my Love for my art.
That is an awesome story.
MrMagooo that’s so 2019

She didn't have a clue of what was going on lol. And didn't really care to. That's a kid right there in her own world, just like dad. 👍🏽

Dave deserves every award that they have out there. Dave is not only funny but he's very deep. He's a genius, he actually teaches oblivious self righteous people how to look in the mirror and see their bull shit for what it is while making you laugh about it. Dave is a low key psychologist lol
its what all the greats do.
The way that Dave smiles with those glasses on he looks like a black Steve-o.

Dave could say chyte if he was on the Maury Show. 😂😂
That ‘“wonderful memory” sentiment must of made an impression on dave due to the fact that he stated in his acceptance speech he dedicated “Dave Chapelle” Day to that exact phrase.
If his son in the blue sweater is his oldest, Dave’s children got progressively less Filipino-looking. Or as Dave says, more Puerto Rican. Lol.
@Haha MissMiss what are you talking about?
Haha MissMiss I doubt that Dave gives a damn what you think about his daughter. Who does look exactly like him and is very pretty.
I'm glad Dave is finally getting the recognition he deserves.
AZIZ ANSARI ON DAVE CHAPPELLE 😭🖤 my two favorite comedians of all time. I'm crying.
"When Keepin' it real, goes right"...
Ok, I'll say it - Elaine Chappelle is stunning
Lol! Dave's daughter was asleep at 2:02. He woke her up by the next cut and she had no idea what was going on. Hahaha!
Controversial, Smart, Thought Provocative, Insanely Hilarious and straight Down to Earth. Dave seriously deserves this recognition let alone the award itself. He’s changed nothing in the comedy but keep it the way it should... Raw, Real and Classic.
I love Aziz - he got a raw deal - I hope he is working on making a fantastic come-back!
Lmaoooo I love everything about this. Aziz and Dave seem like such genuine people. Thank you for sharing your wonderful memories

I need another season of Master of None
Good show
Literally started today. I actually liked it. Didn't even know the show is gonna be like that.
I was gonna say that too. It was a really good show. Then Aziz had a bad date and the Me Too crowd jumped all over him.
Hope he can make more seasons. Seems like all of it has settled down. He's already done a stand- up special where he apologized.
@@dcool2u2 it really sucks doesn't it? I wish he hadn't apologized though because he did nothing wrong.
@@yeahsteeeve Yeah from what I understand, whatever happened was nothing like say a Harvey Wienstein situation.
Sounded more like a date in which they may have miss read each others intentions.
In any case we're screwed out of a good program. It really does suck.
Lol after Aziz brings up the mushrooms you can see Dave say "oh yeah I remember that shit"
I’m crying. Wth, Aziz. That was beautiful! Well deserved
Congratulations to Dave!
There are MAYBE a handful of comics that have done their thing their own way and made money doing it. Integrity is very often the first casualty of fame and authenticity is a very close second. So for Dave Chappelle to keep both and still stay funny is a minor miracle.
My sincere respects.

Nice to see Aziz bounce back. Dave is great, but good promotion material from Aziz to make Dave sound especially fun.
I truly laughed out loud... what a great delivery.
i love dave chappelle!
I'm happy azis can bounce back after false accusations.
I guess he didn't bounce back far enough for you to know how to spell his name?
David C that was an easy bounce-back. The general consensus was what he did was not deserving of having his career destroyed. Even one of the women that was a big part of the me too movement cleared him of any wrong-doing
It wasn't a false accusation, he confirmed the story.
The general consensus though was a guy taking a girl on a date, the girl liking him, going back to his house after the date, getting the guy to go down on her and then being upset that he wanted her to go down on him is not a big deal
kris johnston yeah exactly. I didn’t say it was a false accusation just that he didn’t do something so horrible his career should be destroyed.
