I remember seeing that twisted spoke set up in an old mountain bike action magazine. Almost positive it was on the cover, but not sure. I just remember studying the picture for hours just so I could try and recreate it myself. I did and let me tell you. It wasn't easy. It worked and I thought I was the coolest kid riding my old rigid around. Only did the front and had to recycle the spokes off a road bike wheel. I think I was maybe 14 years old at the time. Pretty sure it was the first wheel I ever built. Self taught for obvious reasons. Didn't have internet back then.
Hi There, Manitou bike were very sexy looking things back in the day, this one didn't get ridden much due to their failure rate, It got mothballed before anything bad happened thankfully. I glad to say bike manufacturers have learned a great deal since then, cheers Joe.
@JoesBikesUK it was a stock treck 3400 size 13, changed 80% of it. Wanted a bombproof frame at that size, later converted it to semi road with 12 to 19 gearing cluster. Still runs fast. I dubbed it Grease Lighting.
i bought the Manitou FS1 back in 93 as soon as it was available here in Germany. I loved it but it was stolen in 97. A Friend bought the FS2 in 95 or 96. Great memories. :)
another beautiful build Joe. I reminder this bike very well.. I'm sure that Manitou would bottom out at 1n' half inches .. but I loved this futuristic design, just like we all did. The rear suspension design they made that was Identical in design to the front fork always brings a smile to my face, would love to own one now.
Wow, one of my dreambikes from the 90's. Awesome build and nice memories about the First Downhill bikes. Love it. Best Wishes and Big support from germany. Stay well
My buddy had an 04 Super V. On the Marin FS a relabeled Answer which I rented at Northstar I took him to task on the down hills. Pity dropper posts were then not quite as refined. The dropper post alone made technical steep lines viable. IMO the dropper post is to MTB the most significant development since panaracer knobs or disk brakes. They truly, the dropper, let you hang it out all over the edge. Body English took on new meaning as you could steer with the seat pinched between the thighs and psychologically in that an alternative to the fly w bail out was on offer.
The kink in the point where the swingarm joined the seat tube- chain stays junc. eliminated the rear end power robbing bong action and locked the rear in out of saddle climbs paired with bar ends it was state of the art.
Great video and a lovely bike. The closest that I'll get to that quality is a set of Manitou SX-R suspension forks on my 2001 Klein Attitude Comp. Could I ask where you source your old fork elastomers etc for their rebuilds? My forks recently bottomed out on a forest trail and popped the rebound knob off the bottom of the fork as well as dropping all the fork oil over the trail. Manitou fork service packs seem very rare.
Glad you enjoyed it, great memories there by the way. There is a guy local to us that makes the elastomers, I find out his details and post it on one of our videos, thanks for watching, cheers Joe.
Nice build, I have a similar marin frs from 1996, may even be a rebadged manitou? Do you know anything about the rear swingarm pivot torque settings? I can t find them anywhere??
@@JoesBikesUK Thanks Joe, It s good to see someone restoring these old classics to such a high standard. Keep up the good work and take care. Appreciate your reply. Colm
Hi Joe's Bikes, iam from indonesian. i have frameset Manitou HT 94' about bottom bracket 73mm english, what is the length of the spindle on the bottom bracket? i saw it using the Shimano UN-72 Thank you
I had one of those. Amazing craftsmanship, but the suspension is trash. No other word to put it. Before that i had the Answer Manitou Hardtail. Best. Mountainbike. Ever! It handled amazing, jumped great, you felt one with the bike. i still regret for not getting another one after i cracked my frame in a crash, but got the FS version. Still thumbs up for the video, thanks for bringing up good memories :)
Yeah what a bike, glad you like the video and hope you like and watch our other videos, please spread the word and please encourage people to subscribe to our channel, cheers Joe.

Never knew Manitou made a bike!
Yes they made some lovely machines, thanks for watching, cheers Joe.
They even made one with fork shocks in the rear. Wonderful machines.

We used bell wire and soldered the spokes back in my day as well, I still have these wheels almost a quarter century later. Never giving them up.
I love it. i'm a big fan of old Manitou stuff. I still have a late 90's double triple Xvert and a very old Manitou three with 1 1/4 steer tube

I miss these old retro style frame, they were so much more practical, like having the really high bottom bracket
Damn! I have the same year, same shape as this! Those are some restoration goals!
My frame was owned by Doug Bradbury! 😉
I have those same wheels in anodized red, same setup twists, with v rims. Bombproof, 24 years later.
Wow, what bike are they in? 24 years of fun for sure, cheers Joe.
