History Of The Atom Timeline - GCSE Chemistry | kayscience.com
Dalton described atoms as being tiny, hard spheres which are indestructible. In 1897, JJ Thompson conducted his cathode ray tube experiment which proved the presence of electrons in atoms. He used this to produce the plum pudding model which described atoms as being a sphere of positive charge which have electrons embedded throughout. Rutherford conducted his gold foil experiment where 1 in 8000 alpha particles were repelled straight back. Rutherford said the atoms have a positively charged central nucleus with a negatively charged cloud of orbiting electrons. Bohr suggested the electrons must be in shells, and not scattered in a cloud of electrons surrounding the nucleus as Rutherford suggested. Moseley discovered the atomic number and Chadwick discovered the neutron.
