Former US Army 3AD Base in Kirch-Goens, Germany, 3AD was de-activated in 1992, at which time units of the 2AD and others remained on post until it closed its doors forever.
I arrived at Ayers Kaserne in December of 1991, a wide eyed 19 years old kid. First time outside the states. What an experience. I was stationed at "The Rock" through most of the 90's. Deployed to Macedonia late '94 through mid '95. Then we deployed to Bosnia December '95 to November '96. We returned to Ayers Kaserne and prepared to transfer to Ray Barracks in Friedberg in early '97. I remember the local Germans protesting the closing of the base very well, right outside the front gate here in this video. I was living off base at Butzbach at the time when we moved to Friedberg. From there we deployed to Bosnia for the second time in September '97 through March '98. I had the privilege of meeting President Clinton and his family there for Christmas. HHC 3/5 CAV 91- 95. D Co. 1/36 INF 95 - 98. Best years of my life.
This is where I inprocessed when we arrived back in 1997. It was closing and most of the buildings were already unoccupied. I remember there was a payphone all by its lonesome that actually was free. The wife and I would make the drive from Butzbach so she could call her family back home in the "States". Good memories. Thanks for taking the time out to show. I know there are folks out there with footage of when it was active. I don't know one Soldier that didn't have a camcorder. I think I may have some of the Butzbach area.
Roadking, Thanks for the memories. I was assigned to Ayers Kaserne 77-79, A Co. 2/33 Armor. Lived in Pohl-Gons. My wife ran the daycare center on post. Bought my first auto insurance policy in the white building next to the gasthaus and some German trinkets which we still have in the other white building. I think it sold cars also. Sad to see it run down. Had lots of great friends there and it was one of the best times of my life. Was also at Ray Barracks 80-83 but I will comment about that on your video there. Thanks again.
I was stationed at "The Rock" from 1964 to 1967. I was in Headquarters and Headquarters Company 3rd Battalion 36th Infantry. Those were the best years of my life. While watching the video of the way it looks today, I had tears in my eyes. I remember taking a taxi from the post to go to The Sputnik Bar and glom some bratwurst and beer. I also went to Butzback and hung out in The Delacado Bar. Being in the Army at that time gave me the chance to travel to many European countries.
This video takes me back in time. I was stationed with C 2/33 AR. from 1980 to 1982. The gate for the rail head is still there. The taxi stand and the Mox Nix store is in this video. The guesthouse is still there. I only ever ate there 2 times and both times the food was bad. I hated the place back then but I have good memories now. Too bad most of it is gone. 3rd AD forever.
This brought back lots of memories, thank you for sharing. I was stationed at "the rock" from 1994 until 1997 when they moved us to Ray Barracks in Friedberg. We had to move everything out and do a major clean up for months on end. Sad to see both places I served in Germany are now gone.
My father was stationed there in the early to late 80's. Around the time of the chernobyl meltdown. Couldn't even go outside for a couple of weeks. Even though I was just a little army brat, it doesn't resemble the memories I have when my mother and I would go there to visit my dad when he was on duty. I remember those building right across from the entrance. I wish I could have been able to visit there before the buildings were demolished. Thank you sharing this.

Stationed at AYERS Kaserne aka " The Rock ", with the HHC 2/32 ARMOR from 87-90. Nice fond memories of West Germany. I remember paydays going to CLASS VI getting alcohol.Besides getting drunk who could forget REFORGER at GRAF OR HOENFELS.
Thanks for the video. I stayed in the barracks for awhile then I lived in an apartment above the Welcome Inn with my girlfriend. It was great being off post. I was in D Co, 3/5 CAV, 1st PLT from May 1992-June 1994.
Man that takes me back! it wasn't de-activated in 1992 though, I was stationed there with 2/3 FA from Oct 1991-Oct 1993. the base was transfered from 3rd AD to 1st AD somewhere in the mid november-early december 1991 but "the Rock" was open until atleast June 1995 because my best friend was still assigned to 2/3FA until his enlistment was up in June of 1995, Thanks for the trip back in time though! I Remember my time there fondly!
I was just there last month, there's not much left but the security guard did let me go in and walk around a little bit. I took some photo's of the inside of the chapel and some of the grounds if you like me to send those to you. Also spent the day in Butzbach, they've really cleaned that town up although the train station is looking run down and dilapidated. I do remember when the tank blew up.

I was there from 78-81. Started out in 3-33 (the Pickles)but stood up for my men in front of the LTC and was transferred to 3-32(the Tigers). So much for my military career. I still curse the name of the battalion commander and the CPT. I told the CPT, that it was pretty sad, when a brand new LT to Germany, had to stick up for his men while he didn’t have the gonads to do so. As far as ring knockers go, you can keep them. I did have a few good friends there though and some very interesting times. Ancient history.

I was there from the beginning of 87 to the end of 89. I loved my experience there. Even when my little blue VW Beetle got run over by a 5-ton by the movie theater, I loved the place. I went back there in 95 or 96 just to see the place. I didn't have anything better to do while visiting friends in Hannover, so I drove down not knowing it had been shut down. I had jaeger-pommes at the Welcome Inn. A few beers...played pool, chatted with Susi. I was shocked that she actually remembered me.
I loved Ayers Kaserne and everything about Butzbach , did not want to come back to the US. We lived in Butzbach housing area, was married to my ex at the time. Spc Robert Taylor his duty station was Charlie Co 3/36 from 81-85 I think the Master Sgt Sherrod was in command at the time, he was one awesome commander. He thought a lot of the soldiers and their families..good man. Thanks so much fro sharing!1

I was there Dec. 1960 to Dec. 1962. Co. D, 32 Armor. Was company armorer and turret mechanic, loved it. I certainly remember that fence and the barbed wire on top as I had to navigate over it very late one night, tore my suit coat as I went over. Great memories. We hung out mostly in Wetzlar. (sp)

I was a "mole digger" in SFC Burfict's 3rd platoon. He was awesome. Cue wasn't there when I got there, Lieske was. If I remember right, Cue got sent to HHC to be their 1SG. Do you remember Shtekot? He ended up being LtCol Beals' driver. He didn't have a lot of get up and go, but he was fascinating to talk to. He defected from Poland in the early 80's. Long live The Rock!

Hey Folks =) How cool is that? It´s the army base on the edge of the town where I grew up (Niederkleen) today it´s an industrial area......to bad in my opinion. But 2-3 years ago I had a rescue training there with a few guys from my paramedical red cross unit (I´m workin as a nurse and a medic) and I saw this whole thing from inside. Awesome =) Love it. For those who wanna know: The Barracks in Gießen are still there as they were but empty. The city department of Gießen does not know what they should do with that big n wide landscape. But i´ve got a question maybe someone can give me an answere: At the other side of the main gate in Gießen....there are too small buildings..... does anyone know what that thing has been at this time? An old men which served there to told me something about a hospital or a first aid station.... is that true? And where exactly is the woodland club? It would be very gentle if there is someone out there who knows that this person would be so nice and would clarify my question. Thanks a lot =) And i´ve got a little story, too. At the train station in Gießen is a small bar (Mr.Jones) and there happend in the early 90´s an accident. Some people danced a little bit too hard and a piece of the floor came down. So 3 GI´s hold the wrecked floor til´ the firefighters arrived. Now there´s a plaque which is dedicated to this 3 brave men xD Greetings from Gießen, folks. Your service will always be appreaciated.
I was on the Rock from Nov. 72 until Sep. 75 with C Co. 3-36 Inf. It was a challenging environment; but I learned a lot there, mostly the hard way!!! I remember the Restaurant opposite the Main Gate. They served a pretty good pizza there.
Hi Bruce! This is Mike G. You were the flag bearer during my reenlistment ceremony! You stood on top of the APC with the flag while the CO and I stood in the open cargo hatch of the mortar FDC track (C-40) while it was parked on-the-line in the motor pool. I remember you well! You were a great NCO.
I was stationed there from 1973 - 77 C-Co 2/32nd Armor Duty really sucked back then. I had been in the Army 5 years when I arrived on the Rock including a tour in Vietnam. The good thing about the rock was I had a lot of good friends and had a lot of good German friends from Niederkleen and Butzbach Ive been back 6 times since my army days it sure has changed .. Everyone misses the activity that was there when 14,000 GI's were around .. But the food the beer (Bier) and the fun still exsists.

They called me SGT Rock because I wrote up a Major for being drunk on duty and I would not recant my write-up. I was CQ when he came up drunk and wanted to inspect the barracks. I would not let him.

Stationed there from 87 - 90, and went on to Ft Carson. I was in 3/5 Cav A Co. 3rd herd. I was glad I didn't have to go to the motor pool any more once I left that place or pull guard at the front or back gate. But I do have so many fond memories of that place and remembering my children being born there in Germany.
I was there from May '85- Jan '87 in Echo, 2/36 Infantry. I don't miss the motor pool, I don't miss freezing my ass off in Hohenfels and Graf, to say nothing of REFORGER. Yet, I still have fond memories of my time in the Army at The Rock. Can anybody explain that to me?

Thanks! I was with the 2/36th Inf. on the Rock 1972-74. Lived in Niederkleen. The trucking company wasn't there and across the road from the main gate only the two brick buildings (the gasthaus where I first had Jaegerschnitzel) and a taxi stand existed. After entering the main gate, I took the first right, went past the pizza stand, NCO Club and bowling alley, and my barracks was the next to the last building on the left before the street curved to the left and went past the library.

Was at Ayers from Aug 91 to Nov 93 with 3/5 Cav. At that time, our barracks were the first set of buildings across from the Chapel and the Blue Crystal Club. Had hoped to go back there someday and visit. I was sad to learn that the base closed in 97 and has been torn down. Glad to see "The Welcome Inn" is still there, met a lot of great people there. I was there 1974 to 1977. Served with Company B 3/33d Armor Division. I was the armorer. Lt. Horner was of great help to me. Proud to have served. It was a lovely place specially Frankfurt. Great memories. Try to find the person that save my life during a field training summer of 1974, I was to be his replacement.
thsongstress I was stationed there from 87 to 90 I was a newly promoted sgt. when my squad played a joke on me at the motor pool they had me pull on a pry bar while they removed a piece of equipment off the back of our Bradley in reality they were sitting there laughing as I struggled with the pry bar just then CMS Davis walks by and sees me, stops and calls me over and squares me away on the duties of an NCO, the guys were still snickering when I came back, it is one of the best memories I have of my time there

I remember MSG Cue, he was my platoon sergeant in S3. He retired and stayed in friedberg with his wife. I drove back in 97 when I was stationed in Vilseck. I love germany though. Came down on orders to be a drill sergeant and had to leave.

And the Imbiss Stand with the Real Gyros with Sieta Sauce. Anybody remember the AIDS scare??? How about the summer of free beer when that lovely girl didn't have HIV??? Those were the days.
4-32 Armor from '86-'87. I remember there was a Gieco Insurance office across from the main gate. What a time it was. We knew why we were there. Reagan told the Soviets what he thought and wasn't wishy-washy with them. A totally different mindset and attitude than units in the States. Alerts, maintenance, pomm frits, Licher Beer, maintenance, more alerts, gunnery, Hoenfels, Licher, maintenance, Graf (again)...never ended. Always preparing for war; hoping it never came (thank God it didn't). There was a Brit who sold tailored suits in the PX. Guy was kind of squirrly; asked too many specific questions about the units or alerts. So many questions that someone told the S2 and after awhile, I heard (can't verify) that CID was watching him.
I was 3/5 CAV, 1AD from 95-97. We deactivated and became 1/36 INF and closed down The Rock. I was part of the detail to move everything out for our unit. It's so wierd seeing a video of the place. The Brick House is not the Brick House anymore. I'm sure Mom the bartender is long passed. We had such good times there. I deffinitely liked The Rock better than Ray Barracks, where we moved when Ayres closed.
Came with 2/5Cav from Hood with the whole battalion swap in "86". The first cohort battalion out of Knox in "85" was a real cluster f. Hated the 🪨 except for the Beer and Hash😂

Stationed here 73 to 74 Headquarters Company 2/33rd. Rick Umphryes. We used to go to Frankfort on the weekends. I worked as a Maint. clerk in the motor pool. I drove a duce and a half when we went out in the field. My sargeant of the motor pool was sargeant Porter from Arkansas. We smoked enough hash to knock out a horse. I am still in contact with a roommate who lives in Ohio. I am retired and live in Missouri.
I too tried to gain access to my old barraks, I coild see the building from the main gate. My hair stood up as I got chills remembering, I was there 1965-1967. 2nd. Bn. 3rd. Heard

One thing and i would pray with tech today , in 1982 i got a call in the middle of the night my dad was dieing of cancer my CO Gary Nelson took me himself to Frankfurt and paid for my plane tickets from Shaw AFB to Detroit mi last i remember he lived in Wi i want so badly to repay him for those tickets

Oh man, they changed the name of the Brickhous to Second Hour! I was there in early 1996 before Bosnia and then late 1996 before Ayers Kaserne closed and we moved to Giessen US Depot. Those were the good ol's days of great beer with great people. Prost!
Scott, I was at Bad co. 2nd / 36th Infantry from '82-'84. Remember reforger in '82 or '83 when that tank blew up when it went under that power line after a train had went by. I lost my high school class ring is in the fuel tank of an APC I drove.

Man that takes me back! it wasn't de-activated in 1992 though, I was stationed there with 2/3 FA from Oct 1991-Oct 1993. the base was transfered from 3rd AD to 1st AD somewhere in the mid november-early december 1991 but "the Rock" was open until atleast June 1995 because my best friend was still assigned to 2/3FA until his enlistment was up in June of 1995, Thanks for the trip back in time though! I Remember my time there fondly!
I was just there last month, there's not much left but the security guard did let me go in and walk around a little bit. I took some photo's of the inside of the chapel and some of the grounds if you like me to send those to you. Also spent the day in Butzbach, they've really cleaned that town up although the train station is looking run down and dilapidated. I do remember when the tank blew up.
I was there in 1980- 1982 with HHC 2/32, started out as the 1sgt driver, then requested to transfer to B 2/32 I was the gunner for LTC Sander A Woods. Loved them times in Germany, I had a friend that we played soccer for a local German team, Carlos Sousa he was in A 2/32...

I was a medic in HHC 3/5 cav from 1993 to 1996. Thanks for the update, I had alot of good times there.
I was there from 78-81. Started out in 3-33 (the Pickles)but stood up for my men in front of the LTC and was transferred to 3-32(the Tigers). So much for my military career. I still curse the name of the battalion commander and the CPT. I told the CPT, that it was pretty sad, when a brand new LT to Germany, had to stick up for his men while he didn’t have the gonads to do so. As far as ring knockers go, you can keep them. I did have a few good friends there though and some very interesting times. Ancient history.

I was 2/36th, Headquarters Co. S-4, Battalion Supply, from all of 1967 to half of 1968. Yes, great memories.

I was there from the beginning of 87 to the end of 89. I loved my experience there. Even when my little blue VW Beetle got run over by a 5-ton by the movie theater, I loved the place. I went back there in 95 or 96 just to see the place. I didn't have anything better to do while visiting friends in Hannover, so I drove down not knowing it had been shut down. I had jaeger-pommes at the Welcome Inn. A few beers...played pool, chatted with Susi. I was shocked that she actually remembered me.
I loved Ayers Kaserne and everything about Butzbach , did not want to come back to the US. We lived in Butzbach housing area, was married to my ex at the time. Spc Robert Taylor his duty station was Charlie Co 3/36 from 81-85 I think the Master Sgt Sherrod was in command at the time, he was one awesome commander. He thought a lot of the soldiers and their families..good man. Thanks so much fro sharing!1

I was there Dec. 1960 to Dec. 1962. Co. D, 32 Armor. Was company armorer and turret mechanic, loved it. I certainly remember that fence and the barbed wire on top as I had to navigate over it very late one night, tore my suit coat as I went over. Great memories. We hung out mostly in Wetzlar. (sp)

I was a "mole digger" in SFC Burfict's 3rd platoon. He was awesome. Cue wasn't there when I got there, Lieske was. If I remember right, Cue got sent to HHC to be their 1SG. Do you remember Shtekot? He ended up being LtCol Beals' driver. He didn't have a lot of get up and go, but he was fascinating to talk to. He defected from Poland in the early 80's.

Hey Folks =) How cool is that? It´s the army base on the edge of the town where I grew up (Niederkleen) today it´s an industrial area......to bad in my opinion. But 2-3 years ago I had a rescue training there with a few guys from my paramedical red cross unit (I´m workin as a nurse and a medic) and I saw this whole thing from inside. Awesome =) Love it. For those who wanna know: The Barracks in Gießen are still there as they were but empty. The city department of Gießen does not know what they should do with that big n wide landscape. But i´ve got a question maybe someone can give me an answere: At the other side of the main gate in Gießen....there are too small buildings..... does anyone know what that thing has been at this time? An old men which served there to told me something about a hospital or a first aid station.... is that true? And where exactly is the woodland club? It would be very gentle if there is someone out there who knows that this person would be so nice and would clarify my question. Thanks a lot =)
And i´ve got a little story, too. At the train station in Gießen is a small bar (Mr.Jones) and there happend in the early 90´s an accident. Some people danced a little bit too hard and a piece of the floor came down. So 3 GI´s hold the wrecked floor til´ the firefighters arrived. Now there´s a plaque which is dedicated to this 3 brave men xD

I was on the Rock from Nov. 72 until Sep. 75 with C Co. 3-36 Inf. It was a challenging environment; but I learned a lot there, mostly the hard way!!! I remember the Restaurant opposite the Main Gate. They served a pretty good pizza there.
Hi Bruce! This is Mike G. You were the flag bearer during my reenlistment ceremony! You stood on top of the APC with the flag while the CO and I stood in the open cargo hatch of the mortar FDC track (C-40) while it was parked on-the-line in the motor pool. I remember you well! You were a great NCO.
I was stationed there from 1973 - 77 C-Co 2/32nd Armor Duty really sucked back then. I had been in the Army 5 years when I arrived on the Rock including a tour in Vietnam. The good thing about the rock was I had a lot of good friends and had a lot of good German friends from Niederkleen and Butzbach Ive been back 6 times since my army days it sure has changed .. Everyone misses the activity that was there when 14,000 GI's were around .. But the food the beer (Bier) and the fun still exsists.

They called me SGT Rock because I wrote up a Major for being drunk on duty and I would not recant my write-up. I was CQ when he came up drunk and wanted to inspect the barracks. I would not let him.

Stationed there from 87 - 90, and went on to Ft Carson. I was in 3/5 Cav A Co. 3rd herd. I was glad I didn't have to go to the motor pool any more once I left that place or pull guard at the front or back gate. But I do have so many fond memories of that place and remembering my children being born there in Germany.

I was there from May '85- Jan '87 in Echo, 2/36 Infantry. I don't miss the motor pool, I don't miss freezing my ass off in Hohenfels and Graf, to say nothing of REFORGER. Yet, I still have fond memories of my time in the Army at The Rock. Can anybody explain that to me?
Was there in 84-85. C Co 2/33 Armor. Captain Fowler was the CO. Also had a Lt Gates, Walker and Howard there. Loved the gyros outside the gate and we had a German tailor in our barracks.

Thanks! I was with the 2/36th Inf. on the Rock 1972-74. Lived in Niederkleen. The trucking company wasn't there and across the road from the main gate only the two brick buildings (the gasthaus where I first had Jaegerschnitzel) and a taxi stand existed. After entering the main gate, I took the first right, went past the pizza stand, NCO Club and bowling alley, and my barracks was the next to the last building on the left before the street curved to the left and went past the library.

Was at Ayers from Aug 91 to Nov 93 with 3/5 Cav. At that time, our barracks were the first set of buildings across from the Chapel and the Blue Crystal Club. Had hoped to go back there someday and visit. I was sad to learn that the base closed in 97 and has been torn down. Glad to see "The Welcome Inn" is still there, met a lot of great people there. Any idea what the base is being used for these days? Did you visit the Welcome Inn, now called "Second Home"? Thanks for the updated video.

I was there 1974 to 1977. Served with Company B 3/33d Armor Division. I was the armorer. Lt. Horner was of great help to me. Proud to have served. It was a lovely place specially Frankfurt. Great memories. Try to find the person that save my life during a field training summer of 1974, I was to be his replacement.

thsongstress I was stationed there from 87 to 90 I was a newly promoted sgt. when my squad played a joke on me at the motor pool they had me pull on a pry bar while they removed a piece of equipment off the back of our Bradley in reality they were sitting there laughing as I struggled with the pry bar just then CMS Davis walks by and sees me, stops and calls me over and squares me away on the duties of an NCO, the guys were still snickering when I came back, it is one of the best memories I have of my time there

I remember MSG Cue, he was my platoon sergeant in S3. He retired and stayed in friedberg with his wife. I drove back in 97 when I was stationed in Vilseck. I love germany though. Came down on orders to be a drill sergeant and had to leave.

I was in Bco 503rd from 90 to 95. Got sent to the FSB in Friedburg but we took over the 503rd motor pool so I still worked in my same AO. Great times.
4-32 Armor from '86-'87. I remember there was a Gieco Insurance office across from the main gate. What a time it was. We knew why we were there. Reagan told the Soviets what he thought and wasn't wishy-washy with them. A totally different mindset and attitude than units in the States. Alerts, maintenance, pomm frits, Licher Beer, maintenance, more alerts, gunnery, Hoenfels, Licher, maintenance, Graf (again)...never ended. Always preparing for war; hoping it never came (thank God it didn't). There was a Brit who sold tailored suits in the PX. Guy was kind of squirrly; asked too many specific questions about the units or alerts. So many questions that someone told the S2 and after awhile, I heard (can't verify) that CID was watching him.
I was 3/5 CAV, 1AD from 95-97. We deactivated and became 1/36 INF and closed down The Rock. I was part of the detail to move everything out for our unit. It's so wierd seeing a video of the place. The Brick House is not the Brick House anymore. I'm sure Mom the bartender is long passed. We had such good times there. I deffinitely liked The Rock better than Ray Barracks, where we moved when Ayres closed.
Came with 2/5Cav from Hood with the whole battalion swap in "86". The first cohort battalion out of Knox in "85" was a real cluster f. Hated the 🪨 except for the Beer and Hash😂

Stationed here 73 to 74 Headquarters Company 2/33rd. Rick Umphryes. We used to go to Frankfort on the weekends. I worked as a Maint. clerk in the motor pool. I drove a duce and a half when we went out in the field. My sargeant of the motor pool was sargeant Porter from Arkansas. We smoked enough hash to knock out a horse. I am still in contact with a roommate who lives in Ohio. I am retired and live in Missouri.

One thing and i would pray with tech today , in 1982 i got a call in the middle of the night my dad was dieing of cancer my CO Gary Nelson took me himself to Frankfurt and paid for my plane tickets from Shaw AFB to Detroit mi last i remember he lived in Wi i want so badly to repay him for those tickets

Scott, I was at Bad co. 2nd / 36th Infantry from '82-'84. Remember reforger in '82 or '83 when that tank blew up when it went under that power line after a train had went by. I lost my high school class ring is in the fuel tank of an APC I drove.
