I was a soviet soldier on another side of Germany border 1989-1991 :)
    Magdeburg. DDR.
I was born in Tallinn, Estonia.
I send greetings to all former "enemies":) And in general it is necessary to live in peace and friendship. Our politicians always push together the people to reach the mercenary purposes.

i was 18 years old when i first arrived at Butzbach, West Germany in Oclober 31 1973 via train from Frankfurt am Main Central station. i was assigned to the 2/3 FA. and i stayed there until January 1978 in which i got married in Butzbach to a German girl. Thank you for the memories. It hurts to see the kaserne razed. Especially the barracks that i stayed at when i was a young soldier and later married and reside at Eiggenstein. To me Butzbach is my home too, I love that town.

Almost all of those buildings are gone now - those were torn down years ago to make way for housing. The schloss is now offices. Our BC (battery commander) was a CPT Allison. What an amazing walk down memory lane. I was stationed at Schloss Kaserne back in 89-91 with 369th PSC (3AD) that ran the MILPO. Such an amazing place to get stationed, the most charming base in Germany. Located just a two minute walk from downtown. Spent so many nights in the local hangouts, especially Pilsquelle. Owner's sister Maria was a cutie.

The last 6, I was assigned to be DSP driver which took me all over the country . With my pick of the motor pool.

Loved Butzbach, and Mikes place was my favorite lunch spot- a little bar owned by a really nice guy who was from Greece, about 100 yards or so from the front gate of Schloss Kaserne...
A lot of men and women went through there.

I still have friends there in Butzbach. I last saw the kaserne in 1997 after it had been closed but before it was demolished to make way for new housing to be constructed. Drove the BC' jeep or dodge truck or van or deuce and1/2. Mostly at night . Worked one, got two off. Sometimes alone. Mostly there were two. The actual schloss/castle of Schloss Kaserne was home to the 58th General Supply Co. during its short reactivation from 1987 to 1991. At 5:14, I can see my old room on the top far right of the screen with a window open on the 3rd floor. The 58th had the whole 3rd floor in the center and the entire west wing to the right and behind the tree as Barracks. I can rightfully claim that I have lived in a castle. I was there in Germany from April 1987 to June 1989. Many great memories and some of the best food and beer: Licher Bier and Fred's Gyros (durum kebabs) mit tzatziki always hit the spot. Thanks for the Video and reconnecting me with Butzbach.

I was stationed with the 564th MP Co. '78-'79 (Johnson married Booth, did not work out but I did get a wonderful, healthy son from the marriage. ) I certainly remember Freeman and Byrne and still have partying pics😉
I recall how lovely all of the miniature rose fields were! I also loved the restaurant, something called Verb (or close to it) that had the wonderful schnitzel. Yes, Butzbach was a beautiful place to live. I miss it too.

1:23 this crossing has changed a lot since a view years. At the corner on left hands side where the "Butzbacher Farbenfabrik", this building doesn't exist anymore and there is a very huge residential complex. On right hands side where the old "Volksbank"-Building was, there is a big modern house also with beautiful apartments on the upper floors.
2:43 the "Rathaus" changed a lot too. The wood isn't dark brown any more, rather light gray. this sucks, but that is probably more authentic and supposedly corresponds more to the original.

Always loved the Marktplatz at Butzbach. Such neat architecture and history. I was stationed at The Rock but the wife and I lived in a "garage-converted-to-apartment" in Butzbach in 1972 down by the Autobahn near the Polizei Amt. We moved closer to post in Niederkleen in 1973.

I got married there back in 1977 with a German wife. We had some good times, unfortunately we got divorced 9 years later. My memory is always full of cheer and happiness, thank u for posting this video. believe it or not, i used to live in the castle, it was big, nope, no elevators, had to use the stairs, had to be careful when i came back from partying, before i got married. heheh. i will always love Butzbach, Germany.

reference to ejergens comments, i remember Paprikas, small gasthaus, they were greek, awesome gyro's or suzlakis they were called in my days from 1973 to 1978. i visit that place almost every weekend that i became like a member of the family and treated me as such. one son was the same age as me and his younger brother was 14, they are like brothers to me. The owner would actually walk me back to the barracks when i got pass tipsy. i call him Papa, To me, They are still family.

Glad I found this - thanks for sharing. I was with the 564th from 1978 to 1981and I must say I really miss Butzbach. The people I met there were great and I have a lot of fond memories from there. The military life was crap but outside the barracks it wasn't so bad. My favorite hangout there was the Oberbayern. Wonder if it's still around?

Hi, I grew up in Butzbach (born 1973) and I really do miss all of you! There was so much life going on because of the US Army and because of all of the Americans living in Butzbach, Friedberg and Giessen. I remember walking through the forrest during a large "military exercise" to admire all the machinery and to ask for some "real American chocolate".

It was great to see the main square in Butzbach. I was there in 1980 for reception. I was later stationed at the rock. I spent some time at the main square waiting on taxi's to get back to Ayers Kaserne. It looks much like it did in the early 80's. We had to go to Butzbach to get a train to Frankfurt and the red light district, he,he.

To Indlestat: I'm afraid your name escapes me at this time. Forty years ago, and a stroke nine months ago will do that I'm afraid. Too bad they tore the place down a few years back. It would have been fun to travel back in time. The 70th moved up to Giessen in the early 70's and evertually moved back to the states I believe. I think they even did time in Iraq. Thanks again for your commo.

Ok, I teared up a bit. I was involved in the turnover of Schloss to Hessen. Ex-Mayor Dieter Menk probably knew what was in store; Butzbach wanted to turn Schloss into a park but the state of Hessen laughed at them wanting funding & pumped it full of Ausländer instead.
The pinko Mayor of Friedberg saw what happened and suddenly went from "Yanqui RAUS!" to "Ami!", and that SoB delayed the turnover by a couple of years.
