MSG MikeWetzel in Ray Barrack Friedberg
Ray Barrack, Friedberg - Duty Station of Elvis Presley
Just found this in my old files. My friend, then MSG Mike Wetzel, made this video for AFN Frankfurt in 2007 at Ray Barracks, Friedberg, Germany, after it closed down for good. I had just posted my 2007 videos of various locations I had visited [including Ray Barracks] on youtube. If you had the chance to visit the post back in the late 60's some of the content will be familiar to you.

Hi Tom, I imagine that you then worked under 1Sgt. Pollard, who was assigned to your Company [A]. He was stationed there 68-70, after he just finished a tour in Nam 67-68. Sorry to tell you that he, SGM Elmer L. Pollard, just passed away a couple of months ago in Florida.

Hi Sharon, We lived in 12A Michigan Ave from 68-70, when I graduated from Frankfurt High School. Been back to Butzbach 6 times since then, once when stationed at Schloss Kaserne. Too bad I could not afford a HD Video camera that just had come out in 07, when this was recorded.

1:23 this crossing has changed a lot since a view years. At the corner on left hands side where the "Butzbacher Farbenfabrik", this building doesn't exist anymore and there is a very huge residential complex. On right hands side where the old "Volksbank"-Building was, there is a big modern house also with beautiful apartments on the upper floors. 2:43 the "Rathaus" changed a lot too. The wood isn't dark brown any more, rather light gray. this sucks, but that is probably more authentic and supposedly corresponds more to the original.

I grew up here from 2003-2006. I started kindergarten in Germany, and I used to get my hair cut in the bunker under the shoppette, I remember waking to school with my friends and saying guten morgen to the Germans across the fence. I’m very grateful to have been able to grow up in such a beautiful place. Thank you for bringing back these memories. Thank you a million times.

I was there from 78-81. Started out in 3-33 (the Pickles)but stood up for my men in front of the LTC and was transferred to 3-32(the Tigers). So much for my military career. I still curse the name of the battalion commander and the CPT. I told the CPT, that it was pretty sad, when a brand new LT to Germany, had to stick up for his men while he didn’t have the gonads to do so. As far as ring knockers go, you can keep them. I did have a few good friends there though and some very interesting times. Ancient history.

Does anyone have any pictures from 68-70 era of the Gasthaus that was on top of the hill, where the wooded area started. Used to go up and play pinball with my buddy Ralph Godfroy, who ended up KIA in Viet Nam in 1969. Gave the pictures of him & I at the Gasthaus to his sister Kristine, after his death. Appreciate if anyone still has any of those old pictures. Hooa

Nice but we won the Cold War and Putin has an Army of pasty Gen Zers and convicts who cannot fight. Russia will soon collapse. Looks like we did a good job! Reagan put Putin out of work from his job running the Bader-Meinhof Red Army Faction in West Germany. Yep, Put planned all those bombings!

I arrived at Ayers Kaserne in December of 1991, a wide eyed 19 years old kid. First time outside the states. What an experience. I was stationed at "The Rock" through most of the 90's. Deployed to Macedonia late '94 through mid '95. Then we deployed to Bosnia December '95 to November '96. We returned to Ayers Kaserne and prepared to transfer to Ray Barracks in Friedberg in early '97. I remember the local Germans protesting the closing of the base very well, right outside the front gate here in this video. I was living off base at Butzbach at the time when we moved to Friedberg. From there we deployed to Bosnia for the second time in September '97 through March '98. I had the privilege of meeting President Clinton and his family there for Christmas. HHC 3/5 CAV 91- 95. D Co. 1/36 INF 95 - 98. Best years of my life.
