This was not even the information that I needed for my current project, but now I know how to address all of the cabinets in my bathroom that are starting to peel. Thanks for putting this up!
Thank you so much for this. My anxiety level has dropped 100 percent and has been replaced with rebounded excitement about refacing my kitchen cabinets.
Awesome! This is a great process and I loved the way you showed the entire process to give a real time show of how long it takes! Im redoing a pop up camper on my channel and this is what I needed to know to start my cabinet doors!!! thanks again!
Great video and very informative. Side note - I recently moved away from the south across the country to Montana and those bird calls made me really miss home. Another hidden joy for me in the video ❤️
Thk u for the safety tips. Trust me when I tell you I had no idea it was that beautiful on the bottom. I have the same style and laminate on mine and I've been motivated now. I'm going to drive my hubby crazy LOL

I just brought home a cabinet door from my son's house. I told him I'd give it a shot. Step #1 - remove the laminate. This video gave me the confidence to do it! Thanks!
So glad you found the video helpful Rose. Quick tip if you plan to paint the cabinet after removing the laminate be sure to wipe it down with mineral spirits and allow it to dry first and use an extreme bond primer before any paint best of luck
Please please please be careful when using the heat gun it omits extreme heat I recently got a second-degree burn from the heat gun working on an Epoxy job safety first!
Good one. I watched this because I'm getting ready to pull some heavy laminate off a sink vanity. Thinking the heat gun and some gentle prying, can get it off. Thanks!
This was a FANTASTIC video. Well recorded, spoken and EASY to understand! Real time helped. It's love you to see you do a video on painting that cabinet. How to remove the excess glue, whether sanding is necessary and what kind of primer and paint to use. I'm going to search for more videos from you. THANK YOU! dab
Thank you for that feedback. I will get to working on that. Ill go by a thrift store to see if i can grab a laminate cabinet door and create a video just for your request
But also in the meantime i would recommend using mineral spirits to clean the rest of the glue off and allowing it to dry completely. Then i would use an oil based primer like extreme bond and then paint over that!
@@danidiydit1 thank you for the recommendation! I found a video that a guy said use something to remove the glue, use an "MDF Sealer" and then a primer before painting. I didn't finish his video... too long and his accent was hard to understand. I had a painter here tonight and he told me they cant guarantee it bc the MDF is so porous.. Lmk if you get one and do the video. Thanks SO MUCH. You're great
Hi I’m thinking of transforming my parents kitchen cabinets as the laminate started to peel on a few of the cabinets. I am just wondering what are the next steps after removing the laminate ? Do you have to sand it/ clean it, before applying the primer, is there glue residue after removal of the laminate? Thanks so much for a great video and hope to hear back from you 🙏🏻
LubaAugust yes ! You want to wipe down with mineral spirits to clean off the sticky residue , also I would sand with a 200-220 sand paper . Nothing too crazy but just to buff out the last of the stickiness. Then I would absolutely prime the cabinets before painting and you should be good to fo
I was looking to remove the damaged laminate on an Ikea picture frame, would a hair dryer work the same? I know a heat gun would be stronger, but I unfortunately don't have access to one. Thank you!
Thats a great question unfortunately i dont know the answer. Give it a try i would love to know if it works out. Maybe it will just take longer than using the heat gun
Thank you for sharing!! I just bought my first home and received a $5K estimate to remove the laminate and paint the cabinets in my kitchen. Is it easy to paint them once the laminate is removed? I’m interested to see a video where that is done. 😊
Great Vid, thank you. I'm thinking about doing this but is there a chance that onceI peel to off the laminate, the door will be cracked or look so bad that I can't paint it?
I would say it depends on the condition of the laminate , if it’s been peeling for a while and things like debris and moisture have gotten inside the laminate then yes there’s a chance. But it’s not something you would know until you peel it back
Just wanted to clarify: what was the base material for the cabinet? I have kitchen cabinets that are particle board laminated in white, and peeling horribly. Looks like the laminate is fairly simple to remove but what can I do next? Would I be able to paint over the particle board, or would I have to get new laminate? Previous owners of our house did a lot of shoddy DIY work that I'd like to fix as much as possible without taking out a remodeling loan.
So for these cabinets after removing the laminate i painted with Sherwin Williams Pro Block Primer, allowed to dry and sanded with 220 grit, wiped clean and painted them with a durable latex paint.
A hair dryer may work with a little more time and effort, but yes a sanded surface is highly recommended, free of any left over adhesive, dust and debris!
Love the video I have those same kind of cabinets which are white. But I would to paint my cabinets a different color. Can I repeat that process to the back of that cabinets doors in order to paint them. Or am I'm stuck with the back of the doors being white. I'm trying to remodel @ paint all my cabinets @ draws
Hey Tonya. Thanks for watching. So anywhere the laminate is adhered you can use this process to remove. The most important tip would be how to prep the surface once the laminate is removed to have a successful paint job.
I recommend using the mineral spirits to wipe and remove any adhesive the heat gun did not remove, allow to dry then use the Sherwin Williams problock primer, allow to dry completely, sand using a 220 grits, wipe clean THEN start your paint. I hope this helps!
Thank You for taking the time to reply !! By Old Style, I meant the type of Formica that was used on kitchen countertops. It is very stiff. I don’t know what would happen when heat is applied. Thank You very much !! Dave
Ok i was thinking you may be talking about that. And if we are talking about the same thing there is no wood below for you to stain. That wood is chips thats been stirred and glued together, almost like plywood boards then the formica is laid on top. In this case the heat gun method will not work.
I wiped them down with mineral spirits, put down a Sherwin Williams primer, allowed to dry, sand with 220 grit and then painted with the top coat of your choice
Awesome vid. Thanks for sharing. I want to paint mine white, what type of paint to you suggest for these cabinets? Oil base water base? Anything else I should keep in mind?
I want to do this to my kitchen. The laminate/thermafoil is peeling so I want to take it all off and paint them but not sure about the cabinets themselves

with Sherwin Williams Pro Block Primer, allow to dry fully, sand with 220grit and a latex paint on top

Yes its not always this easy but with persistence it can still be done

Hi Dani, What about the "skin" on the other parts of the cabinets? Would I use the same technique? Thank you!
Yes absolutely. This technique can be used anywhere you find the laminate casing
Was there adhesive left behind? Did you remove that?
Yes there was and i used mineral spirits followed by a light 220 sanding
I don't have heat gun, can I use hairdryer?
You know ive never used a hairdryer so i coukdnt say if the temps get high enough to loosen the adhesive. But if you try it and it works let me know
What kind of paint should I use to paint the doors once the laminate is removed?
I recommend using Sherwin Williams extreme bond primer first followed by their Emerald paint for the top coat in any finish you like
What kind of adhesive remover did you use to remove the glue from the cabinet doors to prepare it for painting
I use mineral spirits
@@danidiydit1 I tried mineral spirits and acetone but the glue is still on
Yikes. Normally either of those two would work. You could also try sanded it .
What if you laminate on pressed wood?
Is that ready to paint now or does it need any other treatment?
you will want to paint a high quality primer first, allow to dry completely then sand with 220 grit before painting with a high quality latex paint

Will this method work for removing ‘old style’
Thick Formica ? I want to remove Formica from a table top and refinish the wood beneath the Formica.
I dont think so. But also not sure what you mean by old style formica

Awesome vid. Thanks for sharing. I want to paint mine white, what type of paint to you suggest for these cabinets? Oil base water base? Anything else I should keep in mind?
If they are wood cabinets then you can use water based. If laminate I suggest oil based paint but be mindful of the strong odor of the oil based
Thank you!!!
It is called melamine coating made of plastic. You want to heat the melamine that is still attached rather than the bare MDF
I want to do this to my kitchen. The laminate/thermafoil is peeling so I want to take it all off and paint them but not sure about the cabinets themselves
What r u unsure about
What did you to prep the cabinet before painting it?
I prepped by priming allowing to dry, sanded it with 220 grit, cleaned then painted

I live in a modular home and I think my cabinets are like that but I’m not sure. How can I tell?
You would have to look for a seam or somewhere it looks like you can peel it. You should also be able to feel the texture of the laminate vs paint
Thank you so much!!!
My pleasure
I wish I would of seen this video first. I hand sanded everything off of my cabinets before painting them. That was a chore
Any idea id this would work on ikea shelves?
Stagism I don’t shop IKEA but if it is in deed laminate and you can peel off an edge then it will definitely work the same
How about cabinets that have material that has been glued.
