"Orchestral Manoeuvres were such a huge influence on me. The reason I got into electronic music was because I heard the track 'Almost'. That's when I thought to myself, 'Oh my God, electronic music actually has some emotion'." - Vince Clarke (co-founder of Depeche Mode, Yazoo, and Erasure).

I’d say OMD were more of a synth band than an electronic band. Mainly because of the emotion and because they didn’t make synths part of their image like kraftwerk did. They brushed on too many styles to just be an electronic band although they did make some electronic songs.

I was brought up on their greatest hits then I listened to their albums. The greatest hits compilation hardly do them justice because the first 4 albums are absolute masterpieces!

All of the clips from this concert are amazing; the quality of the performances, video, and sound is excellent, especially considering this was recorded 30 years ago. After stumbling across these videos on UA-cam, I was happy to learn that the Drury Lane concert can be found in its entirety on the DVD that comes with the recent reissue of Architecture & Morality, which I just ordered from Amazon.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark dedicated the song "Almost" to Andy Fletcher during their show at the Greek Theatre in LA on the day of his death, May 26 2022. The song had inspired future Depeche Mode bandmate Vince Clarke to pursue electronic music.

When the tempo is up, like it is here, it sounds more "new wave", but slower, like the album, its much darker and more Goth

Andy is right-handed, but originally learned to play bass guitar on a left-handed model. As a result, he plays with the strings "upside down"

It's The Theatre Royal Drury Lane 1981, that was the gig released on DVD. I'd imagine that's where this has come from.
They didn't play Hammersmith Odeon until '84.

OMD were a triumph of the Northern working class. A right-handed kid playing a grubby, used, left-handed bass, and singing the best he could. His buddy playing the most low-end polyphonic synth on the market (Korg M500), which they had to pay for in never-ending, interest-laden instalments. Out of that came genius tracks like "Almost", "Electricity", "Messages", "Enola Gay" and "Stanlow". Incredible band with an incredible story.

Considering they (and I think Motion and Heart) are not part of this package, they must have been 'censored' by UA-cam for whatever reason. Likely RIAA whining.

OMD was using live percussion in the early days, DM used a tape or drum machine. Yet, Dm in the later years used live percussion. Confusing.
