Tlaloc sometimes it's confusing for latin people cause we're not used to make those distinctions between ethnicities all the time. Most of us only use our nationalities or continents to identify ourselves. Talking about races is almost considered rude. Someone told me I'm white cause my ancestors are mostly European but I never thought of it that way before. I've always considered myself Argentinian and Latin. Nothing else.
My half-brother is half Mexican (It's funny because I'm darker and speak Spanish he doesn't) He is so white, but says he isn't.

I have Italian ancestors and according to my dad, Native and Portuguese on his side, but he doesn't even remember it clearly, so I'm not sure. I only know about my Italian side. I have light skin and green eyes, so I guess I look white. But why?
Spanish people aren't "white". They're hispanic, just like people from Portugal. It's annoying to see people call us "white", when some of us are even darker than those latinos that show up on this video. And in both those countries you'll find someone with dark tanned skin, a loose afro and dark eyes, like you'll find a pale white, blonde and with light eyes person, it's common, south europe is also a mix of different ancient races.

So why did a white european college guy from the united kingdom that I web cam chatted with on a random day on a web chat site told me his first thought on my race was filipino asian, that DNA ancestry testing is not accurate its like a polygraph test not accurate at all. I am not making this up, I randomly got linked to a white united kingdom european young guy that was the same age as me in our 20's and I asked him if he was european cause of his accent and of course he was white so I didn't mention that, after me asking where he was from he said and you? where are you from and whats your race, so I told him to guess and his first thought of my race was filipino asian because native americans look asianish closest asians that look similar to native americans are filipino asians, indians also did originate from asians. So I told him I was colombian / surinamese and he said oh that could be why.

The only explanation I could find of why some of them didn’t know that they had European blood, is because they lived almost their whole life in the United States. I mean, when you study and grow up in a Hispanic school, Colonization and all those topics are almost the most relevant thing that they teach you in History, in Latin America. If you lived in United States, of course they are not going to teach you a lot about it, it should be more about the colonization that happened here (United States). It’s the only explanation that I would find 🤷🏻♀️

@@Mr.White10-65 the issue with the US is that it kept slavery for almost a century after its independence why the rest of the Americas banned almost as soon as it became independent and most of Europe had already outlawed it outside of some colonial holdings.
But it still makes no sense that they only teach about English colonisation in History class in the US, because the territory of the current US that was a part of the Spanish Empire is much bigger (California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Florida,...) than the comparatively small thirteen English colonies. The Spanish Empire is also a part of the US american History, but they just seem to completely ignore that. And let's not even talk about the History of the first nations, completely ignored

Yes,majority of us do. Unfortunately most of us don't really know what race/races we are ,so when we are asked out of habit we'll say (insert latin american country here). Some of us grow up hearing that so much that we become convinced it's a race ,until we learn that we were wrong,and then unfortunately some of us never do. Their father is white and also with blond hair and blue eyes, but the mother is Puerto Rican but looks "white" with a very light complexion and brown hair and brown eyes. This person has an Indigenous maternal haplogroup with about 6% West African and about 5% Indigenous on 23andme. But I've never seen anyone who had 30% African with blonde hair and blue eyes though.

The fact that so many of them have some Jewish ancestry isn't shocking at all. Some studies show that 25% of all Latin Americans have at least some Jewish genetic markers, simply because the inquisition forced so many Jews to flee for their lives at the same time that colonial expansion was going on. They couldn't stay in Spain or Portugal and so many went to the colonies as an escape route and they couldn't be open about their religion, so the history of the families was gradually lost (e.g. their descendants bought into the fiction that they were Christians). A friend of my family actually had this happen to him, where he realized that his family were converso because all of their traditional recipes are kosher and multiple generations of his family (e.g. mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother) would light candles in the closet every Friday and praying just based on tradition (this originated from them having to light Shabbat candles in secret each week and, over the generations, they switched to Christian prayers but kept the tradition, with future generations ignorant of what it actually meant).

Yeah, I was surprised that they weren't Sephardic Jews. Most of them had 1% Ashkenazi Jew, which kind of makes sense. I wonder if it's because some of their DNA was similar to that of Jews in the Middle East who fled to Eastern Europe. There was not much of an explanation of their Ashkenazi relatives like where they were located and when they moved to Latin America. I wish we had a full explanation of their relatives, especially with areas that they were not expecting.

They all descend from the same population, but some went into north Africa, some went into Europe, and others went north into places like Iraq and Iran. This means that all three sub-ethnicities share very similar biomarkers, particularly Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews, who met up again in Spain prior to the inquisition and intermarried.

As someone with documented converso lineage and knowledge of Iberian history you are slightly off .
Jews were in the Iberian peninsula long before the Maghrebi invasion and when given a choice to convert or leave ,many converted and remained but for some traveling to the new world was an escape from the "purity" laws and the oversight that new converts faces .
At the same time many converted Jews became very famous (and wealthy)in Spain and Portugal and many people in the peninsula have Jewish DNA with the best known being from Mallorca.
The descendants were not fictionally Christian because many converted sincerely and even though some of them kept cultural Jewish customs (without being aware of the origin ) most had become at least nominally Christian.
Keep in mind that the truly religious Jews fled when given the choice so those left were not the most faithful Jews to start with and some just changed to nominal Christians.
There is also a myth that the name Iberia itself means land of Jews ,but I haven't found much to corroborate that.
Finally ,the Inquisition had no authority over non Christians and the whole story of the inquisition has been enormously exaggerated due to Anglo/Dutch propaganda.
Although it was a sad time in Iberian history they were not running to avoid being killed because they were given the choice to leave or convert which at that time in history was not how it typically happened with people you wanted to get rid of ...
Anyhow, as with any complex multifaceted issue ..simplistic views are usually wrong.

He was obviously joking. He did not say Dominican was a race. However, the test does also give nationality in addition to race. I took the test and it told me I am likely Dominican right down to the provinces my family is from.
My family is from Guerrero, Mexico. My father is from Acapulco and they are known for having African ancestry en la costa chica. My dad did Ancestry DNA and got 46% Native American, 20% African, 20% Filipino, 10% Spain, etc.. which makes sense (look up Acapulco-Manila Galleon trade). My mom who is from Iguala, Guerrero is 56% Native American and 44% European (Spain, Italy, Portugal, Norway, etc).

Its crazy that at the age of 17 I'm realizing what I am. Probably hella white and native American. And that's on not being taught shit about MY history. I always thought I was just mexican and never knew what to put under race in any forms.
And for me having grown up in Central California, most people are Mexican. It always got on my nerves how many people thought the same. Just “Mexican”, not white European and Indian mix, or deny their European or Native roots just because of cultural things, not wanting to be “considered white”, or in Mexico how the natives are very isolated and some pretend to forget their native language.

as a Latino this makes me want to take a DNA test now lmao, I'm curious about what the results could be. But since idk how to get them and also I'm a minor so I'd have to ask my parents first I'm only gonna guess based on what I know and my family's features. Ok so in my case I'm Peruvian and this is what I know:
I know my great grandparents were Spanish and that my grandpa was blonde with green eyes, but that's on my dad's side. On my mom's side, my grandpa was half Italian since my great grandma emigrated from Italy as a child and from what my grandpa told me his dad's family was Turkish, but on both my grandma's sides I know nothing. I'm guessing my grandma on my mom's side had a lot of Native ancestry because of her features and maybe a little of African ancestry too because of her hair and skin tone. On my other grandma's side I'm not that sure but she had wavy hair, light brown eyes and really pale skin.
On my dad's side both my grandparents have Spanish last names. On my mom's side my grandpa's first family name (in my country we use both family names) is kinda rare, I've tried looking it up but there's not much information about it, all I could find is that apparently it is from Indonesia but I'm not sure, my dad says my grandpa probably made that surname up lmao. OK and his second family name is clearly Italian. Then on my grandma's side both her family names are Spanish but she had quite a few Indigenous features and she had really curly hair so she's most likely mixed.
Ok so based off of this I'm certain I have Spanish, Italian and Turkish ancestry and if Google is correct then maybe somewhat Indonesian?? Idk. There's definitely Native somewhere in there and maybe a percentage of African too.

I couldn't recommend this book enough. It explains the Hispanic/Latino history and it demystifies certain preconceptions. The Iberian countries and the Latino American countries are incredibly mixed and we all share history, language and even cultural aspects and even though we may not want to call ourselves Hispanic or Latino, history tells us that we are both.
Gracia even suggests that a person can be for example, Hispanic and Colombian or Hispanic Brazilian or even Hispanic Portuguese. The book says much more, really worth a read.

The term Latino/Latina has different meanings, mostly we use it as the short version of "Latinoamericanos" (People from Latin America), this video makes me think about these people have never had a history class in their life. Since childhood, this is taught, they even explain to us how the "sistema de casta en el Virreinato/colonia" worked (criollos, zambos, mulatos, etc).
Being Latino is neither an ethnicity nor a race, as I said, it is only a term that is said to generalize geographically or culturally. I have seen that people who call themselves "Latinos" (because they have ancestry) say that Argentines are not because they are white, when in reality you can be Latino and be black, white, mestizo. My country, Peru has a great ethnic diversity, there are people with East Asian descent (Chinese, Japanese), or Native Americans, Afro-descendants and they are still Latinos

You are right that the 3% can be accurate, but the most reputable scientists of genetics say that anything less than 3% is not conclusive. Therefore unless you know for sure that you had an ancestor of that ethnicity 400 years ago, then you should ignore it.

I took a DNA test 3 years ago, I'm pretty much the average Northern Mexican:
68% European - mostly Iberian/Basque and some Irish.
30% Native American - closely related to the Hopi people of the US southwest and other indigenous nations of Northern Mexico such as the Yaqui.
2% Sub-Saharan African mostly from Western Africa.

It is not surprising considering the close relationship between the Vice-Royalty of New Spain (Mexico) with the Phillipine Islands from the XVI centrury to 1821. (The Phillipines had also a sizable Chinese community and were administered from Mexico City during that period) I wonder if Mr. Lopez parents were from Acapulco where most of the east Asian trade was based.
