when i saw this, they auctioned off the bowtie he wore during the show, and he was yelling out prices, and someone from the audience shouted "10 GALLEONS" and i think i died of happiness
I loved the show and thought that Daniel Radcliffe & John Larroquette were fabulous! (Especially the Old Ivy Number) And I can't believe what a terrific voice Daniel has. He was so amazing he got a 5 minute ovation at the curtain call!!!!
OH MY GOSH I’M JEALOUS, this musical is and always has been my absolute favorite but I never got the chance to see it on broadway, I really want there to be another revival although I can’t really think of any established actors who I would want to see as Finch.
You know what, he's awesome. His voice has this lively quality. It's unique but that's why it's so refreshing. "Haters gotta hate, but that's only because they ain't got no love in their hearts" -Old Lady I saw on the Subway Last Week. BTW I couldn't help but laugh the first time he said "Seeker". Sorry Dan.
All this debate about the best singer is perfunctory - the Loesser arrangement, especially the horns, is sublime so who cares about the singing ? A work of genius
What I wish I had seen was the road company staging of the 1995 revival (which on Broadway starred Broderick) of "H2$," that traveling company of which starred Ralph Macchio (filmdom's "Karate Kid") as "Finch." I am sure with Macchio's great dexterity his choreography was superb. Although I have no idea of his singing abilities. Actually, Macchio's was the mold for the Radcliffe casting as "Finch," each of these boyish-appearing young men having been originally known from popular film series'.
I was too young to have seen Bobby Morse in the original staging of "H2$," nor even of any road companies that may have played near me at the time. In those days there were usually pre-Broadway tryouts in Boston (near where I lived in my childhood and adolescence) and New Haven, as well road companies that would appear after Broadway successes. Nowadays, Broadway-bound stagings are more limited, and more multiple previews for press are performed instead.
When I went to see it and Dan said "eyes of a seeker", I'm surprised he didn't see me and my friend sitting in the second row of center orchestra smiling like idiots!
Another casting choice for "Finch" I had for the '80s is Patrick Cassidy, a proven Broadway boy. Although, back then, in that Nick Jonas/casting-of-pop singer mindset, perhaps brothers David or Shaun Cassidy would've been good, before their Broadway triumphs in "Blood Brothers" with Petula Clark, then Carole King.
But I was grateful a filmed version of "H2$" was produced with Morse and most of the Broadway cast intact, modifications including some songs' extractions duly noted and readable online at Wikipedia.
I have also speculated who a first Broadway revival of "H2$" may have starred had there been any in the 1970s or '80s? My first thought is Richard Thomas, TV's "John-Boy Walton," would have made an excellent "Finch," with his boyish enthusiasm and theater background. I am almost certain Thomas could have handled the choreography, as both his parents were ballet dancers who also ran a ballet school. But I have no knowledge of Thomas' singing abilities.
By the way, the major Broadway critics were unanimous in their consensus the first "Finch" (Daniel Radcliffe) of the most recent Broadway revival was not completely convincing in the role. But I have yet to read their reviews of the performances of Darren Criss and Nick Jonas.
I'm so over Radcliffe as Finch. ;P It was exciting at first... until I heard him sing last Thursday. Matthew Broderick trumps him. Thanks for posting all of these. :)
In the manner of a Nick Jonas casting today, I think perhaps Donny Osmond would have been a good choice as "Finch," certainly by the '80s, which I think would have predated his work in "Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" at that point of time.
@VRNProductions I guess it doesn't in a way. But seriously think about it: if you want to get a HUGE profit in reviving an old show from the 60s called, "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying", a show with a name like that would definitely get a large, supple audience in current times...hence, you need a big name for a boost! I know that's the reason I went to go see it :p
Maybe if we put on our "Thinking Caps," we may come up with some other singing & dancing actors who'd have made good "Finches" in a hypothetical 1970s/'80s revival of "H2$.?" I am throwing this open to anyone who sees this, as well as yourself, "Ivy Truong." That way we may both enjoy the thoughts of others on this subject. If I think of any others, I will chime back in, too.
@Roccarocks Oh, yeah, I understand the business aspect of it perfectly. My point is it didn't seem like they tried very much to make the rest of the show particularly good...
in my opinion nick does not possess the charm to star on broadway.he's only a boybander and I feel he takes himself way to seriously. He's only fit to be a chorus member at most, not the star.
@bangsmoke I saw some of Jonas' stuff and I agree thats he's awesome, but his performance of this on Fallon lacked a lot compared to this video here. Jonas didn't have enough emotion and he wasn't convincing at all, at least in this I believe in Radcliffe's character and he's committed- maybe it was just his performance on Jimmy Fallon but that's what I was comparing to this.
To my untrained ears, the singing of Radcliffe and Jonas sounds perfectly fine. Although I am sure Morse's extra-charismatic sparkle will always render his the performance of "Finch" against which all successors will be judged. After all, Morse originated the role, so his interpretation set the parameters for future critiques.
@summerluverr Are you kidding? Nick Jonas just did a DAMN fine job. Read some of the other comments. Some of the people who've seen both prefer Jonas, and I couldn't care less about him.
I'm sorry, but this version of "I Believe In You" sounds a bit too cheery, not that it's a bad song or a bad guy performing, (Daniel is awesome) but Robert Morse's version sounds better to me. Just my opinion.
Looking back at this comment now (with my school doing this show next month for my final high school show, wow) and should just say: Robert Morse (in the movie) just delivers an excellent performance. Daniel Radcliffe is awesome, probably my favorite Finch in existence, and I love his singing in all of the H2$ songs.
This is a great attempt, but I still prefer Robert Morse. Daniel doesn't seem to be able to sustain the notes in the same way, so this sounds a little rushed compared to the other.
Dan was Finch. The comedy and cocky confidence. Darren was a little too sexy for Finch. He looked like a true Wall Street banker. Nick's vocals were great and definitely matured and he got a geeky businessman thing going for him. He wasn't Finch, though.
Isn't he singing this song to himself in the mirror? xD I laugh at the people who imagine that he's singing this to them, because it's all about himself.
Excellent performances by all concerned, but I can’t help thinking that this show is tarnished somewhat by the use of a skeleton orchestra. Ah, the economics of modern Broadway...
Robert Morse was better. Hell the whole original cast was better. I love Dan but he's not even close to Morse and this cast isn't close to the OBC or the movie cast.
+Joseph Chastain I completely agree with you. I haven't seen this version of H2$, but I have listened to this entire soundtrack. Daniel sounds a bit too innocent in this to be Finch. Seeing the original, there was a sense that Finch was a little like the executives in that he enjoyed sending people to Venezuela just to get higher in the business. Finch was just as conniving as Frump in ways.
when i saw this, they auctioned off the bowtie he wore during the show, and he was yelling out prices, and someone from the audience shouted "10 GALLEONS" and i think i died of happiness
This comment made me laugh my ass off. He may never escape the legacy of the boy who lived.
I saw that, too...I think it went for $5,000?
This is the song I've been listening to whenever I fell on edge or unsure of something, it has worked surprisingly well.
I loved the show and thought that Daniel Radcliffe & John Larroquette were fabulous! (Especially the Old Ivy Number) And I can't believe what a terrific voice Daniel has. He was so amazing he got a 5 minute ovation at the curtain call!!!!
Considering Daniel Radcliffe isn't an actual singer, he sounds pretty great here
2:00 all I heard was "you have the cool, clear eyes of a Seeker".....I mean come on...
This was first on Broadway, with those lyrics, since friggen 1961
Daniel Radcliffe has got a sweet voice. I LOVE HIM
When I went to see this musical, I had NO IDEA that Daniel could sing like that.
how was it?
FANTASTIC.
OH MY GOSH I’M JEALOUS, this musical is and always has been my absolute favorite but I never got the chance to see it on broadway, I really want there to be another revival although I can’t really think of any established actors who I would want to see as Finch.

Really... i cried at this song! i couldnt believe i had dan sooo closeee!! Best night ever
All this debate about the best singer is perfunctory - the Loesser arrangement, especially the horns, is sublime so who cares about the singing ? A work of genius
Everyone's talking about who's better in this song. And I'm just freaking out because there's an amazing French Horn part. (I'm a french horn player.)
Wow, I never would have expected him to have such a lovely voice!
cant wait for this song! (Im playing Finch, so excited!)
What I wish I had seen was the road company staging of the 1995 revival (which on Broadway starred Broderick) of "H2$," that traveling company of which starred Ralph Macchio (filmdom's "Karate Kid") as "Finch."

@GraceLamportTV Oh, believe me, there were tears. Lots and lots of tears.
I love the beat to this song! I wish I was in it!
this used to be my least favorite of the songs he sings but now i love it xD
I loved the movie.
@VRNProductions Exactly! That was the point in making sure a big star always plays Finch :)
Currently doing this play, i play Mr.Gatch (lucky me :( ) but still amazing show
I was too young to have seen Bobby Morse in the original staging of "H2$," nor even of any road companies that may have played near me at the time. When I went to see it and Dan said "eyes of a seeker", I'm surprised he didn't see me and my friend sitting in the second row of center orchestra smiling like idiots!
I don’t get it
"Don't let him be such a hero"- HEY! that's Harry Potter you're talking to
So true.
"Meet me in the Executive Washroom... We'll make plaaans."
If you know what I mean. ;)
XDDDDD
Gay sex
And what do you think of Robert Morse's (the original's) and Matthew Broderick's interpretations of "J. Pierrepont Finch?"
But I was grateful a filmed version of "H2$" was produced with Morse and most of the Broadway cast intact, modifications including some songs' extractions duly noted and readable online at Wikipedia.

he should have been doing this his whole life, when i listen to this Harry Potter doesn't even cross my mind, to me he's J. Pierrepont Finch!
i giggled when he said seeker .
it was inevitable c:
Alex MacKnight I don’t get it
@MurieJ825 Agreed. I listen to the Dan versions and Im like damn I wish they rerecord it with Darren.
Everyone listens to Katy Perry and Gaga...and this is my jam. lol I
By the way, the major Broadway critics were unanimous in their consensus the first "Finch" (Daniel Radcliffe) of the most recent Broadway revival was not completely convincing in the role. But I have yet to read their reviews of the performances of Darren Criss and Nick Jonas.
He comes in at a close second to Morse. :) I don't think anyone will beat the way he did it, but Broderick sounds pretty great.
I love this musical and it's even better that it's Daniel Radcliffe!
He's no Robert Morse, but I like him :)
I'm so upset that I didn't here the seeker part, but I was in the third to last row. So oh, well. I love it though. :)
I'm so over Radcliffe as Finch. ;P It was exciting at first... until I heard him sing last Thursday. Matthew Broderick trumps him.
Thanks for posting all of these. :)
You are correct. But where does Matthew Broderick fit into this equation?
In the manner of a Nick Jonas casting today, I think perhaps Donny Osmond would have been a good choice as "Finch," certainly by the '80s, which I think would have predated his work in "Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" at that point of time.
@Roccarocks Doesn't reflect well on the rest of the show, though, does it?
So... before I saw the musical I thought in this song, Daniel was singing to Rosemary... imagine my surprise when he was singing to himself... haha.
@VRNProductions I guess it doesn't in a way. But seriously think about it: if you want to get a HUGE profit in reviving an old show from the 60s called, "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying", a show with a name like that would definitely get a large, supple audience in current times...hence, you need a big name for a boost! love this song so much (i was Bratt in my play) Nick is not as good as Daniel
This is a good version, but I like the original with Robert Morse
awesome perfect song for harry potter uh
i almost died. i wanted that bowtie so bad
2:37 - "judgement"
Does his accent slip out, or is it just me?
Roxx i can hear it in brotherhood of man as well
@IDyedMyCatPurple omg i just noticed that thanks so much for pointing it out lol.
@Roccarocks Oh, yeah, I understand the business aspect of it perfectly. My point is it didn't seem like they tried very much to make the rest of the show particularly good...
@KyRAZY4bieberx3 DARREN CRISS DID THE SAME TO ME! I WAS DEAD CENTER AND DYING FROM THE INTENSITY.
Anyone else think that if the revival didn't star Radcliffe, it would've completely tanked?
@AniitaIribarren me too... I was in the third row :3
in my opinion nick does not possess the charm to star on broadway.he's only a boybander and I feel he takes himself way to seriously. He's only fit to be a chorus member at most, not the star.
Funnily enough i was supposed to be Tackaberry, then i gave the part in exchange for gatch...
@bangsmoke I saw some of Jonas' stuff and I agree thats he's awesome, but his performance of this on Fallon lacked a lot compared to this video here. This is a great attempt, but I still prefer Robert Morse. Daniel doesn't seem to be able to sustain the notes in the same way, so this sounds a little rushed compared to the other.

@purplegirl353 Oh, God, that's hilarious!
nick can sing better than dan. there's no doubt about that but dan just fits the character better than nick. i kinda think Dan is a better actor
Spaaaam!! (8)

The only thing you're seeking is the golden snitch...
Michael Park uuuugh
Best Singer recently on Broadway all together is either Jeremy Jordan, Norbert Leo Butz, or Aaron Tveit
Norbert exceeds them both in his acting. He can be charming leading man or the hilarious character actor.
Juan Ayala Experience is the best teacher.
It really is, well said
Excellent performances by all concerned, but I can’t help thinking that this show is tarnished somewhat by the use of a skeleton orchestra. Ah, the economics of modern Broadway...
omg, just saw nick jonas do this on jimmy fallon. daniel is 10 thousand times better
...The amount of Radcliffe fanboys/girls in this comment section is TOO DAMN HIGH.
Robert Morse was better. Hell the whole original cast was better. I love Dan but he's not even close to Morse and this cast isn't close to the OBC or the movie cast.
+Joseph Chastain Though Dan isn't BAD per se. Just not great.
+Joseph Chastain I completely agree with you. I haven't seen this version of H2$, but I have listened to this entire soundtrack. Daniel sounds a bit too innocent in this to be Finch. Robert Morse > Daniel Radcliffe > Matthew Broderick
Personally I liked Darren's version better...
I like Nick but Darren and Daniel were much better
Nick was better than Dan!
In my opinion, Dan was the best. Nick Jonas was just... no.
Robert Morse is better than both. ;) lol
I just learned that this is Harry Potter. O ~ M ~ G!!!!!
